@@apostraffstudio I would appreciate if Nikon would design Voigtländer-styled small prime lenses for the Zf but with AF or the Pentax Limited pancakes style. Would look much better on a Zf.
I think this is just an interim lens and is intended purely for the cheaper non s-line line up. I think it’s still pretty safe to say that there will be a 35mm 1.2 in due course, because why wouldn’t there be? Really good that there’s a cheaper light capturing prime now which is what we need and this will probably be the best option for the zf in any case!
I'm down for a cheaper 35mm F/1.4. It's light, it's cheap and the image quality looks close enough to the 35 1.8S. I'll most likely pick it up because the 35 ART is just too big with the ftz. I think an affordable 1.4 is a good move. No one would be able to tell the difference between the 1.8S and the 1.4 anyways, especially on social media.
I have the same beloved Sigma 35/1.4, still using it with FTZ on my Z6III or Z6II. I was waiting for either Nikon or third parties (Tamron or Sigma) to offer a replacement. Obviously, I didn't want to go to the 35/1.8 option. I never understood Nikon's strategy about trying to attract customers for a new system with expensive F1.8 primes. It holds off people switching from DSLR and their F1.4 primes and young starters who just see F1.8 and not F1.4 or cheaper F1.8. And now this new 35/1.4 might have some corners cut that might regret me buying it. I'm going to rent it and see how it performs compared to the Sigma.
My personal opinion - this was intentional. It could potentially help to boost sales of the Z6III... a nice compliment for those videographers who want that 1.4 but at a slightly more affordable price point, or I could also see this for photographers who find the advantages of having a 1.4 more important, than the very technical refinements in a lens (that most will never be able to identify if not stated in a YT video). Sometimes the "character" that comes with these types of lenses WITHOUT the premium price tag, is preferred. I wouldn't be surprised if the 35mm 1.2 still gets released later on. More options is always a win IMO.
Having invested in all the 1.8 S primes, ie. 35, 50 & 85mm, I won't be changing any of them for something else in the foreseeable future. The aperture is just fine & they are easily light enough to shoot handheld all day, with no problems. If I was starting from scratch, that might be a different story. I would need to try both lenses out on a sunny day & see for myself what the flare & chromatic aberration was like on both lenses. Purple & or green fringing drives me nuts, more than anything. I'd be willing to sacrifice a little more weight & slightly deeper DoF to ensure there was no colour fringing. So long story short, sticking with my 1.8 lenses, thanks very much.
That would be great and I hope it happens soon because I'm tired of hoping and speculating. It just takes too long for such an important focal length. Nikon should communicate better about this sort of thing.
I don’t understand massive 35mm f1.2 lenses. This is a documentary focal length - wouldn’t such a massive lens intimidate the subjects? All for the tiny “benefit” of half a stop thinner depth of field
Internet people are strange. If Nikon would release a 35 mm f/1.2 lens then i guarantee they say "it's too big, too heavy and too expensive - won't buy. Nikon should do f/1.4 lenses instead..."
I have the Z 35mm f/1.8 S and it has performed well for me. I see no reason to replace it or add the f/1.4 for 1/3 stop at a bit less weight. I will buy a Z 35mm f/1.2 S if Nikon produces one, mainly for street photography. I believe the reason Nikon released the f/1.4 lens is to provide a lower cost option to pair with the Z6III in order to reach a larger market.
Okay this is starting to make sense now. Very smart move from Nikon... the 35 1.4 is lacking in fine details. It's even apparent with the youtube compression. It's quite a bit worse than the 1.8. I think it's great that Nikon released this lens but I think it will eventually become quite a bit cheaper, maybe in the $450-475 range. Camera companies struggle to sell their top dollar 1.2 glass if the have a mid range 1.4 option. So making the 1.4 glass the budget option is a genius marketing move because then people actually have incentive to jump up to their top of the line 1.2 glass.
Couldn't agree more, 9:50. I'm in the common sense camp. As a long-time working pro Nikon shooter, I sold my 28 and 85mm f/1.4 AF-D lenses in the early 2000s (after transitioning to digital). Absolutely NO need for f/1.4 in the digital realm. Worked with a three lens kit for years, the 17-35mm AF-S, 50mm f/1.4 AF-D and 80-200mm AF-S. As a corporate and social event shooter and former PJ, I never felt I missed a shot with that kit. Always chuckled at the Canon fanboys buying their ridiculous "behemoth" f/1.2 lenses. Definitely made to extract $$$ out of the dentists and armchair/internet experts.
F1.4 lenses used to be a package where you knew what to expect: better optically, better autofocus, better built. So yes, they were better than F1.8's - which were good and affordable. Well, except for the 50mm F1.4 AF-D which was very soft wide open and the 50mm F1.8G was sharper and faster to focus. It's like Nikon never really could deliver a solid 50/1.4. But yes, it's very confusing and weird to now see expensive "pro level" F1.8's and "cheaper " F1.4 that is still quite expensive because it's ... an F1.4 but still not as expensive as a F1.8 because they cut corners. Nikon decided to change the lens line up logic for a reason we'll never know. I guess, probably because an excellent 35/1.4 would be too big. They couldn't pull off what Sony did - with both their 50mm F1.2 & F1.4 being smaller and... existing. Also ironic how you mention " no need for F1.4" and "canon fanboys and their behemoth f1.2 lenses" when Nikon is now the one spitting out huge F1.2 lenses compared to other mirrorless brands offering the same lenses at a smaller size. I love my 50/1.2 S lens. But every time I take it out the bag I get angry at the clouds for Nikon making it so gigantic. If Nikon offered a good 50/1.4 sooner, I would have gone with that one. Maybe. Or kept my excellent but older Sigma ART 50/1.4 with the dreadful FTZ. Sharp F1.4 (of F1.2) lenses are not about "getting a shot you couldn't take with a F1.8", it's all about subject separation. Especially on weddings & events. And the difference is there, clearly. If you can't see it, the fault is not in the lens.
I bought the 50 f/1.2 and it was almost the size of the 70-200, ridiculous for street work. I sent it back after two days and bought the voigtlander 50 f/1 nokton which is smaller, lighter and a better lens all around if you can deal with manual focus. With the nikon focus peaking and eye capture capabilities, im loving thd voigtlander lens!
more people will get a $600 35mm f1.4 compared to a 35mm f1.2. Beginners and people who want to add a new lenses above the kits and variable aperture zooms without breaking the bank. Still hope they release the 35mm f1.2 s in the future.
I have both. I like the 1.4 because of the 2/3 stop difference and its impact on shutter speed, especially for the Z8 and my need to shoot in low light. I have not found it to flare. I think the rendition is nice and seems to not have the clinical sharpness of the 1.8 which suits me just fine.
I appreciate the honest feedback. I can see Nikon selling a lot of these at the price point and good on them with the Z6 iii release but I'm gonna pass and hold out hope the f/1.2S is yet to come. Definitely something that has an audience but I'm not that audience. If a cheaper non S line of primes is coming...I get it totally...but I appreciate the optics of the more premium regardless of cost. Thanks again and Cheers Matt!
Had a feeling the 35 would be announced just after the Z6III, but I didn't see 1.4 coming. I just assumed Sigma or Tamron would handle the 1.4's. I do believe we'll still see a 35 1.2, and additional 1.4's coming. So they'll have a standard prime lineup and the 1.8 S line. Similar to two levels of the 2.8 zooms. As someone that's in the market for a 35, I'm kind of not sure which way to go here (a good problem 🙂).
Hi Matt - I think they will still release a 35 1.2 S - this is just an introduction to a new line of lower quality but less expensive 1.4 non S lenses. I think its just a bit of a fake-me-out that they released the 35mm first for the new 1.4 line. I think we'll still see the 35 1.2 S at some point in the next year. -PD
I think this is good news and shows what a healthily camera market with competition looks like. My guess this is Nikon's response to: * More inexpensive good compelling 1.8 options from 3rd parties like Vitrox on the wide prime end at reasonable prices * Complaints that the Z mount prices are just at another level above F mount for similar light gathering * And yes size and weight The 1.8 s-line lenses were developed, I am sure, to showcase what the Z mount could do, but now in a mature lens eco-system, at that aperture and price, are really the odd duck. My guess is that over the next 5 years, we will see more 1.4's like this at different focal lengths, the 35 1.2s as a showcase piece and best of the best. What I don't know is over time what will happen to the 1.8s series.
Matt, I always appreciate your in-depth and seasoned perspective! I see your 50mm with the worn focus ring, which is good, it means it's well-loved! I was able to salvage a rubber focus ring from a broken 55-300mm, and it fits so well. (Sorry for the slight off-topic) Anyway does this new prime have rubberized focus ring?
I would not buy a non-S lens and / or lens without a manual focus ring. The difference is decisive for me. I do like the 35mm focal length and 1.4 aperture. Thank you for your video and analysis based on the circumstances.
I am not sure about it. I am not a wide lens shooter, so I just own the zooms and was waiting for the 1.2/35 to get the first prime. Now I don't know if I should wait. Because the 1.8 is probably better it's a tough decission between Quality and light gathering. I think I will wait to get both in one lens -hopefully
I made a huge deposit for a 35 mm 1.2 already quite a while ago to be sure to be first on the list. I heard that Nikon was not at all confident with the result of the first prototype. So Nikon seems to make another one from scratch. I'm so delighted with my 85 mm 1.2 - getting always great reviews from models - and really can't wait to have something similar for portraits in smaller interiors.
My 40mm f2 is doing everything I need it for. If I didn't have it and wanted a 35 mm I would probably opt for the f1.8 because of the coatings. I hate chromatic aberration and I think you are going to find it with the f1.4 when you take it outside and torture it. With this wide of a lens the difference in bokeh is not going to be great and one STM focus motor ought to be fine. With the Zf I am not worried about an extra 2/3 stop in ISO. I just used my old F mount 50mm f1.4 G lens for the first time in ages and chromatic aberrtion was unacceptable and I will sell it.
As a professional wedding photographer, I'd rather have the expensive f/1.2 'behemoth' as you put it. Among several reasons, I make money from my work, and I'd like to have and use the best there is. The 35mm f/1.8 is good, but not nearly as good as I would like to compliment the 85mm f/1.2 or 135mm f/1.8 Plena on a second body. I've been waiting quite a while for the better 35mm f/1.2 or whatever S line from the roadmap, and I've greatly considered adapting the Sigma 35mm f/1.2 from E mount to Z. If the Nikon rep said that S lens is no longer coming, then I'm incredibly disappointed. -To be clear, I think having a (roughly) 'affordable' fast f/1.4 prime release is great.... just not when it means we don't get a high end professional lens release any more.
I also liked the roadmap and knowing what lenses were coming in the next 12 months. I bought my 35 1.8S a while ago, but if I had just bought one last month and then this came out, I’d likely be a little annoyed right now because I may have bought this instead. Glad to see my 1.8S didn’t just get completely outdated though.
Nikon usa web site error has the weight at 0.918 oz . Should be lb. Very light Featherweight lens! Thanks for you great talk. I like my 35mm 1.8 it has been great lens. I agree with your comments. Thanks.
Thanks, Matt. I’ve been waiting for such a lens. It looks to have a touch more character. You’re looking fit these days, if you don’t mind me saying so. You’ve changed something about your lifestyle and it shows! Nice work!
I like shooting at night, and I found f/1.4 is very much desirable. Upto this time I was using Sony on Megadap, it works very well even at night, a native lens should work even better.
Having options is good, I know the F/1.4 is a selling point, but it is still not that cheap a lens (£650 in the uk, £150 cheaper than the F/1.8) Think it would have turned heads if they released a compact 35mm F/2 lens for £400, yet I guess in these days of everything costing more, £650 is cheap for a first party lens (even if it is a budget range) I think a 35mm F/1.2 will happen and it'll be good but heavy and expensive.
The 35mm 1.8s is probably my most used lens in my kit. I did want to see them come out with a 1.2 version S line. I do think for the price of the 1.4 it’s a good buy but I think I will just keep my 1.8 for now and wait and see if they ever come up with an 35mm S line lens.
I see this lens as a great addition, not the lens on the road map. They have no weather resistance character 35mm, the main bread and butter lens for a Nikon Zf. The S lenses are the power houses.
Thank you for the nice review ☺️ Wow I was waiting for f1.2 all this time, and 1.4 came out😮 Especially that Nikon was mentioning that there will not be f1.4
I think you touched on a possible reason for this release. The Z6iii came out with enhanced video capabilities. For that use case, you would expect a lighter, cheaper f1.4 for video work will sell much better than a heavy 1.2 S line. The 1.2 S might still happen, but I think this was a calculated move by Nikon.
Yup, that's literally me. I got a Z6 III and I'm trying to get into more video work and don't have many lenses at the moment. This 35mm f/1.4 seems like a great option for what I want to do for clients.
A bit of a surprise release this and its going to divide many. Personally I am not in the market for a top end f1.2 35mm lens, this f1.4 would suit my wallet and shooting scenarios perfectly fine. As it is I already have the 35 f1.8S so I wont be rushing out to buy this f1.4 just to get 2/3 stop extra. My feeling is this lens is more geared towards videographer's given they make mention of well controlled breathing. Its size and weight make it more gimbal friendly too. It's price will also helps those entering Nikon's system to build up their lens collection. I know those hoping for a 35mm f1.2S are disappointed but the release of this f1.4 doesn't mean that Nikon have canned its development, I'm sure its lurking and will see an eventual release. 😉
I was waiting and hoping for a 35 1.2. a replacement native Z mount lens for my E-mount Sigma 35 F1.2, oh well, I will just continue using my Sigma and save some $$$$, it's all good. I still believe the 35 F1.2 is coming.
I am so happy I've decided to go full Nikon. I still have some Olympus MFT gear to sell off but hopefully I can get it sold and purchase something better than my Z5 and get a couple of good lenses. Nikon for the win!
In the past, this is the role that Sigma lenses played; Nikon covered all of the major focal lengths and then the Sigma lenses were the specialty ones my kit, (I still use my Sigma 50mm f1.4 f-mount on my Z6!)
Nice review but I have owned the s version and sold it. Same size and worse IQ than the 24-70 f 4. I know the 24-70 is slower but a great lens. I was hoping for a better quality lens, similar to the 35 f 1.4 G lens. That was a great lens and I miss it. Sold it when I went to the Z system.
This isn't the lens map lens. Not sure if Nikon R&D is having that much trouble with their "pro" 35mm $2500 lens; Nikon has never made the best 35mm focal length lenses for whatever reason, but this standard 35/1.4 lens is not it. To be fair, it's not even being marketed as such. It should be pointed out that the 135mm Plena went through at least one complete redesign on the way to the final commercial release. At this late date, there's zero reason for Nikon to even bother releasing a 35/1.2S "pro" lens if it isn't something truly special.
I got z 35/1.8s secondhand with the price of bnib 50/1.8s im not upgrading to f1.2 or this. Except there will be the mark2 version. Why? The lens that damn good
Is the 35mm f/1.2 S not still coming? I don't think this is taking it's place... but rather in addition to. Being a non-S and slightly smaller aperture, it's was probably cheaper / easier / faster to get it out to market first.
For me the 35mm 1.4 is a big disappointment. Due to its compactness, it is certainly worth it for some users, but I expected more. If Nikon really does release a 35mm 1.2 S lens in the near future, they'd better communicate that. I'm tired of hoping and speculating. For me it's one of the most important focal lengths and I'm now so upset from waiting that I'm actually thinking about changing the system. If the 1.4 were an S lens I would probably say ok but both 35mm are not good enough for different reasons. I would like to have a 1.2 or at least 1.4 premium lens even though it will be heavy. Sometimes Nikon does great things but unfortunately they are too often a cause for disappointment.
@@mattgranger Hi Matt, much appreciate for your prompt reply. That means the 7 years old F mount 28mm f1.4E remains the fastest Nikon native 28mm lens in the foreseeable future.
Confusing but a welcome release , I have the 40 f2 SE , so I wonder if it's neccsary. But still awesome little lense 1.4 for 599 , if they could make the 50 the same way that would be incredible (typcly 50's are cheaper so 50 1.4 at 399/499 imagine that!) , I would ditch my beloved 50 1.2 for something smaller, love it but it's a fire hydrant. I wonder what would happen/happned to the 35 1.2 , is it cancled ?
I concur with Matt. Nikon's announcement was a letdown. Delivering a new 35mm lens that's faster than the f/1.8 "S" but isn't the next-gen, high speed 35mm "S" lens that appeared to be promised on Nikon's roadmap for years (literally years) just doesn't make sense at all. Even when I received the promo email from Nikon this morning and initially saw that the lens was an f/1.4, I was really disappointed, since I'm an owner of the 50mm f/1.2 and the 85mm f/1.2 and have been hoping to round off my "fast glass" primes with a 35mm f/1.2 for quite some time -- but wait! When I then realized that the new lens wasn't even an "S" series lens, I just shook my head in disgust and thought: "What's the f'ing point?" In the end, I don't take issue at all with Nikon rolling out a non "S" series 35mm f/1.4 lens, but timing is everything. My theory: Nikon (like Sony and Canon) may be struggling to get an outstanding 35mm f/1.2 optical formula out the door, but since Nikon committed to higher-speed 35mm lens on its roadmap for the past several years, perhaps they finally wanted to put the roadmap to rest by rolling out something -- anything -- along the 35mm "fast glass" line as a stop-gap. 🤷♂ I don't otherwise see the reason for the launch of this particular lens at this point in time.
Aww…man…this COULD be perfect…however the cheap price and fact its not S-line are some massive red flags… I own the 35 1.8 S and its Bokeh rendering is absolutely gorgeous…all i ever wishes for to get a 1.4 version WITH THE SAME QUALITY… :) But that last bit worries me…is the af worse? Will the bokeh be worse? The clarity? I only switched back to Nikon this year, and im absolutely enamored with Nikkors Z Mount glass rendering, its the best ive ever seen (ive shot all brands except Pentax or Leica)… i hope they keep this but add 1.4…but something doesnt add up
If Nikon really does release a 35mm 1.2 S lens in the near future, they'd better communicate that. I'm tired of hoping and speculating. It just takes too long for such a relevant lens. For me it's one of the most important focal lengths and I'm now so upset from waiting that I'm actually thinking about changing the system.
@@mr_mcmaster Nikon is not going to abandon their f1.2 line. they already produce a 50mm and 85mm. rumor has it that they are reworking optical formula for it to be lighter while still having minimal focus breathing. this 35mm f1.4 was a patent a few years ago and is an answer to all those cheap Chinese lens that are flooding the marketplace.
It would have been good to compare it to the older 1.4g F mount lens. That was top of the line at the time, but Ofcourse the best Nikon cameras bodies were only around 12mp back then, so I assume the new non S 1.4 would be sharper…
I don't know Matt... lately Nikon makes some weird choices... 1.4 non S? hmmm it makes little sense to me, I mean with the amazing Topaz AI denoise stuff (or Adobe's for that matter) loosing 2/3 of a Stop isn't a big deal anymore (not at 35mm anyway which you could compensate with the shutter speed for 1/3 and with the denoise for the other 1/3 of a stop lost). So: what's the purpose of this new lens then? I hope you know it as I still cannot figure it out frankly... lovely shots btw.
Nikon should have released a 28mm prime before another 35mm. Now they have two 35s with most likely a 1.2 coming in the future but not even a sniff of a 28mm s line.
It's interesting that Nikon did not introduced this lens along with the Z6III. It just came out of nowhere. But hey, I don't work for Nikon, I just buy their products. Great video.
Probably to avoid disappointment. They may have been concerned that people would see the Z6 III as a step forward, and a 35 1.4 like this a step backwards in a way, not that the two are exclusive to eachother. But also I think Nikon is trying to space out releases in general so it looks like they are constantly relasing new products (versus what they used to do and release products at once, then wait 6-12 months before the next batch of releases). A release every few months looks better.
I see Tamron has a 35 1.4 for Sony... is this maybe a Nikon version of that lens??? Regardless if it's on par wit hsome of the competitors like Viltrox's 35mm, I may pick one of these up. I don't really need 1.4 but considering the 1.8 S generally stays around $800 or so, this might be a slightly better buy (although the 1.8 S does occasionally go on sale for up to $200 off at times, so I may also just wait until the end of the year to see if any sales come up). But it nice to know that they are doing a few "budget" lenses like this as the price of the 35 1.8 S has always driven me away from buying one. It's a lens I'd use, but probably not that often (less often than my 50 or 24-120 at least). While this is sort of what I've been asking for (a cheaper, possibly smaller 35mm) I'd still like to see a pancake 35mm even if it 's a 2.8 or 3.5 lens to go with the Zf/Zfc. But this one might do as well. I'm just going to wait for formal reviews and comparisons...
There is no Tamron 35mm 1.4 for mirrorless - their last one was for DSLR. Sigma has one, though, but it is a hefty beast completely opposite from this lens. Any "Tamron-made" comment is completely baseless accusation until we have a patent file that shows both Tamron and Nikon signatures on it (like with the 200-500). People are just jumping to conclusion after the budget 2.8 trio adopted Tamron's optical formula. This lens has a unique design with very large rear glass element right to the lens mount - almost the same size as the rear element of Noct. I am leaning toward this being an in-house design that really capitalize on the unique advantage that Z-mount is offering. Heck, it is *smaller* than the Sony 35mm GM with minimal focus breathing.
@@pseudoryx9284 This is not a "baseless accusation", this is an acknowledgement of the collaboration agreement Nikon and Tamron have for the Z system. When Tamron and Nikon representative are standing 10 feet apart, and they both nod when asked if Tamron made the Nikon Z 28-75mm f/2.8, it stops being "just jumping to conclusion".
@@UnconventionalReasoning Nope, your claim is still baseless. The budget 2.8 trio with Tamron has no bearing on a 35mm f/1.4 with an optical design that has never existed before.
@@pseudoryx9284 Imagine if an optical design that has never existed before now exists. Because a company did something. Your denial is essentially, "I haven't seen it before, so it cannot be true."
More than anything, it is perfect for video and ideal to mount it on a gimbal as it is small and light. And, who knows, it may very well be better than the 1.8 as that lens is kinda old now lol. Let's go #Nikon! :)
I prefer Nikon’s “pro lens” to be made in Japan if they’re gonna take advantage of us for +$2000. Now that the Thai baht is rising in value compared to the yen. Nikon is building out their factories in Japan.
I’m wondering if there’s something complicated with making a 35mm F1.2. Canon released an F1.4 as well even though people were expecting a F1.2. Although this F1.4 has some video features if I remember correctly.
With a f/1.2 wide-angle lens, the light would typically be hitting the sensor at a variety of angles. While this is fine for film, for the digital sensor, the light needs to be closer to perpendicular to the sensor. With a long lens like the 85mm, that is easier because it is bringing in somewhat perpendicular light from a distance. But with a wide-angle lens, especially with a minimum focus distance around 1', 0.3m, the light is coming from 'wide angles', literally, so it had to be straightened at the beck of the lens. That is tricky.
I would like a 1.2 lens but I would also take a 1.4 if it were a top of the line product. Due to its compactness and price, the new lens will definitely find some users, but for me both 35mm are not good enough for different reasons. I'm tired of hoping and speculating. It just takes too long for such a relevant lens. Nikon should communicate clearly whether something is coming or not.
@@mr_mcmaster Last November, a Nikon rep told me that he was surprised the 35mm f/1.2 was still waiting. He had the sense, internally, that it should have been announce, at least, in October. Nikon may be quiet about this because they don't really know what will happen, if there are manufacturing issues. In May, the same rep was unwilling to say anything about the 35mm f/1.2 though he was willing to hint, "Wait a month", when the Z6III was discussed. They have the, "I can neither confirm nor deny" with a smirk kind of answer, but the 35mm f/1.2 seemed to have him flummoxed. This seems to be a situation where Nikon had a plan, and it broke.
@@UnconventionalReasoning Thank you for the information. I just read this. This is very interesting and gives hope that there will be a top of the line 35 mm lens at some point. I know that no company likes to be looked at, but information like this, even if something doesn't work out as expected, would be the kind of open communication for me where I would understand and also know what to expect. Then you don't have to speculate.
I’m curious why everyone assumes this 1.4 is INSTEAD of the 1.2 lens. Nikon released a number of “surprise” lenses that weren’t on the roadmap. This might just be another of those. Time will tell, but I’m betting that the 35mm f/1.2 S is still coming.
If I could have my way, and I know maybe it was not possible business-wise, I would have a cheaper 35mm 1.8 say $400, and a $2000 35mm 1.2 like the sigma or a $1400 1.4 if the market had enough of the big lenses. Nikon needs affordable lenses to compete with Sony. The current status is confusing. Maybe the 1.2 is still coming and they will remove the 1.8 for the market but it's delayed for some market or engineering reason.
If this is what Nikon is going to give us as an alternate to the Z mount 35mm f1.8, it seems to me that Sigma would now be free to develop their 35mm f1.2 with the Z mount. Here's hoping...
Not necessarily. Currently only Tamron can make FF lenses and my guess is Sigma may be prevented from making FF lenses for now (and possibly for the foreseeable future). However, I still think Nikon will probably release a 1.2 S version, but this version may be for vloggers and video shooters given its close proximity in release date to the Z6 III. So I wouldn't hold your breath for a Sigma 35 1.2 in the Z line-up any time soon. If anything Tamron maybe, but then again, I think this is a Tamron lens underneath since they do have a Sony 1.4 E version as well and this may just be another rebadge job.
The roadmap had a 35mm S lens, so that may still be in the plans. Though Nikon reps thought it would have been released last fall, so even they are in the dark.
Nikon Ricci actually says that the 35mm S that was on the roadmap, is a separate lens. Meaning that it may actually still come out. Which I guess is nice but… Nikon, is this really the priority right now? How a zoom longer than the 70-180, but lighter than the 100-400? Or one or two primes between 135 and 400mm? Or a fish-eye? And I’m not even interested in half these lenses.
Hmm🤔... If I buy a f/1.4 lens is would be firstly and specially to shoot always wide open at f/1 .4. But not at f/1.8. For that, I would definitely buy a f/1.8 lens instead a f/1.4
As of now the 1.8 is $100 more. I’d rather go with the 1.8 for better overall value and image quality. I would bet a 1.2 is likely in the future but only Nikon knows for sure.
it would be interesting if this lens was the beginning of a lower cost f1.4 lens line. Thing is, for many users, this might fit their needs/wants more than buying f1.2s.
There are just so many other z mount lenses we need. Why waste manufacturing capacity on this? If it was considerably cheaper or considerably smaller I could understand, but this just seems bonkers to me.
Between the 28-400 and now this, it seems like they are trying to reclaim their share of the enthusiast market. Those lenses together are the perfect “dad cam” setup lol.
Non S line, I'm not interested. And if the 1.8 S is optically better ( it's imho the worst lens in Z line primes), I'll wait for better 35. We've been waiting for ages and we got this. As much as I love Nikon, I'm really disappointed right now.
@@pseudoryx9284 Yes, I meant Z S-line primes. However, I must say that I'm still surprised by the outcome of 40/2, which I use for family trips. For that money, it's a bargain.
Nikon is competing with itself! 40f2 non s plastic mount, 35 1.8 S line and this 35 1.4 non S. Throw a coin in the air to chose your lens although the 40 is the cheapest option. Is the new lens really going to find a place in the z lineup. We still have no fixed prime wider than 20 say a 14 1.8. I have to say I prefer the 50mm focal length to any 35.
This is such a disappointment! I sold my 35mm f/1.8S lens some months ago anticipating the eventual announcement/release of the f/1.2 version. Is it possible that this 35mm f/1.4 non-S lens is simply a rebadged Tamron lens like the 17-28mm f/2.8, 28-75mm f/2.8 and 70-180mm f/2.8 non-S lenses?
@@UnconventionalReasoning Can't be. It's nearly identical to the Z 1,8 S lens which was one of the first primes after the introduction of Z-Mount in 2018.
Valid disclaimers. Let's not forget that the "number" in "f/number" says nothing about how fast a lens is. We need the T-value for that. Next to flare (recognisable artefacts), I would be interested to see glare (overal loss of contrast through reflective casts in the lens), chromatic aberrations, as well as corner sharpness relative to image center. As Depth of Field depends on the Circle of Confusion, a side by side comparison could shed light on the actual DoF of this lens - sharper gives smaller CoC gives shallower DoF (ceteris paribus)

Hey Matt - could you add the model's IG to the comments section too please
Looks like they took the link down.
Z6 III and the 35mm 1.4 will be an awesome combo for enthusiastic photographers
Nikon ZF and the 35mm 1.4 would also be a great combination
Have been waiting for it forever. It should have been one of the first lenses produced.
I personally hope for a compact, lightweight Nikkor 35mm f2 with an aperture ring and weather sealing. I’m convinced it would sell very well!
The closest you are going to get is the 40mm f2 with no aperture ring and weather sealing.
My personal opinion - this was intentional. It could potentially help to boost sales of the Z6III... a nice compliment for those videographers who want that 1.4 but at a slightly more affordable price point, or
I could also see this for photographers who find the advantages of having a 1.4 more important, than the very technical refinements in a lens (that most will never be able to identify if not stated in a YT video).
I think I would have preferred an f1.4 s line. I agree that the f1.2’s are behemoths. So will stick with my 1.8s for now.
According to Ricci Chera, who works for Nikon, this is not the lens in the road map. Therefore a 35mm F1.2 S lens will appear ‘soon’.
That would be great and I hope it happens soon because I'm tired of hoping and speculating. It just takes too long for such an important focal length. Nikon should communicate better about this sort of thing.
Could be. As I said, I was not provided good information on this
I don’t understand massive 35mm f1.2 lenses.
Yes, they've been saying that since the 50 f/1.2 was released.
Can't wait to see this very same comment in more videos such as this copy pasted chasing for likes.
Not worried about the weight. Just the build and image quality.
@@amhazeybut the real thing bothering you is that he is right 😉
@@UnconventionalReasoning But Nikon 50 1.2 is big and heavy especially compared to Sony gm. And it wasn’t supposed to be.
Interesting release. I already have a non S 40mm- yeah it’s f2 but it meets my needs and is super light.
Nikon! Please give us the SE edition!
Honestly, I like it. The 1.2s are way to large and heavy. I really hope they also make a 50mm 1.4 like this!
more people will get a $600 35mm f1.4 compared to a 35mm f1.2.
My guess this is Nikon's response to:
* More inexpensive good compelling 1.8 options from 3rd parties like Vitrox on the wide prime end at reasonable prices
* Complaints that the Z mount prices are just at another level above F mount for similar light gathering
* And yes size and weight
The 1.8 s-line lenses were developed, I am sure, to showcase what the Z mount could do, but now in a mature lens eco-system, at that aperture and price, are really the odd duck.
Fingers crossed you get it soon
Having options is good, I know the F/1.4 is a selling point, but it is still not that cheap a lens (£650 in the uk, £150 cheaper than the F/1.8)
Think it would have turned heads if they released a compact 35mm F/2 lens for £400, yet I guess in these days of everything costing more, £650 is cheap for a first party lens (even if it is a budget range)
I think a 35mm F/1.2 will happen and it'll be good but heavy and expensive.
Great move by Nikon! I want a compact 50mm and 85mm with f1.4 or f1.8 as well!
Perfect! A cheap and light 35mm 1.4 for nikon:) Nikon did a good job on this one!
Thank you for the nice review ☺️
Wow I was waiting for f1.2 all this time, and 1.4 came out😮
Especially that Nikon was mentioning that there will not be f1.4
Matt, your channel is fantastic.
I appreciate the video, considering all the hoops you had to jump through. Thanks.
Take a look at viltrox primes for Z mount. You won't be disappointed (especially the 85 1.8 II, it is really good)
Thanks for your input.
Sold it when I went to the Z system.
its a nice tamron lens from nikon
This and the zf is the ultimate walkaround imo.
Nikon should ad SE version to the lineup for ZF.
Sometimes Nikon does great things but unfortunately they are too often a cause for disappointment.
by the way, is an 28mm f1.4 on the road map?
There is no roadmap anymore.
@@mattgranger Hi Matt, much appreciate for your prompt reply. That means the 7 years old F mount 28mm f1.4E remains the fastest Nikon native 28mm lens in the foreseeable future.

It looks very nice as does the 1.8. Happy days for Nikon z shooters.
So glad with my sigma 35f2. Great quality and perfect walk around lens. But nikon and z-mount are bit closed 😂
When I then realized that the new lens wasn't even an "S" series lens, I just shook my head in disgust and thought: "What's the f'ing point?"
In the end, I don't take issue at all with Nikon rolling out a non "S" series 35mm f/1.4 lens, but timing is everything.
If it's not a critical sharp lens, is it a "characteristics" lens then?
Aww…man…this COULD be perfect…however the cheap price and fact its not S-line are some massive red flags…
I own the 35 1.8 S and its Bokeh rendering is absolutely gorgeous…all i ever wishes for to get a 1.4 version WITH THE SAME QUALITY… :)
But that last bit worries me…is the af worse? Will the bokeh be worse? The clarity?
I only switched back to Nikon this year, and im absolutely enamored with Nikkors Z Mount glass rendering, its the best ive ever seen (ive shot all brands except Pentax or Leica)… i hope they keep this but add 1.4…but something doesnt add up
How do You Know that they will not bring the 35mm f1.2 in the future
It’s a great idea. I look forward to the 50mm version
People calm down, the f1.2 is still going to come. Nikon is introducing a new f1.4 just for casual users
@@mr_mcmasteryou’re a snowflake
@@mr_mcmaster Nikon is not going to abandon their f1.2 line. they already produce a 50mm and 85mm. rumor has it that they are reworking optical formula for it to be lighter while still having minimal focus breathing. this 35mm f1.4 was a patent a few years ago and is an answer to all those cheap Chinese lens that are flooding the marketplace.

great vid, thanks for this review!
I think you will get more regular and more in-depth press coverage with the release of single products.
As a non-S lens, it is a different level than the Z6III. Perhaps closer to a Z5II?
This lens is long overdue. The 24/1.4, 35/1.4, 50/1.4, 85/1.4 should have been the first 4 lenses in the lineup. By now that should have been Mark II.
@@UnconventionalReasoning and what do you think "S" stand for? -- superlens? 😂
This is almost certainly a Tamron lens, or made with significant Tamron components.
Hi
Why is the cross section of the 35mm f/1.4 hard to find?
More than anything, it is perfect for video and ideal to mount it on a gimbal as it is small and light. And, who knows, it may very well be better than the 1.8 as that lens is kinda old now lol. Let's go #Nikon! :)
I prefer Nikon’s “pro lens” to be made in Japan if they’re gonna take advantage of us for +$2000. Now that the Thai baht is rising in value compared to the yen. Nikon is building out their factories in Japan.
This is a non-S lens, and it will be around $600 USD. It almost certainly is a partnership with Tamron.
Could this be made by Tamron I wonder ?
I think Sony fanboys a spreading this misinformation. This lens was designed by Nikon.
What’s the point of this lens?
I would be very interested in 85/1.4 lenses on the Z mount
If this is what Nikon is going to give us as an alternate to the Z mount 35mm f1.8, it seems to me that Sigma would now be free to develop their 35mm f1.2 with the Z mount. Here's hoping...
Maybe not, Nikon will make a pro 35mm f1.2 S lens
Tbh, these lenses are how they steal Fuji customers…. Having an aperture ring was my only holdout….. now I’m ordering a ZF.
Great Video Matt, and I don't even shoot mirrorless.
Is this another Tamron re brand?
Lol
Can't be. It's nearly identical to the Z 1,8 S lens which was one of the first primes after the introduction of Z-Mount in 2018.
I think this is an good entry point lens into the Z System, the 1.2 S will come later.
Waiting for Sigma FF lenses.
Nikons pricing is insane. Even the 50/1.8 feels cheap.
There are just so many other z mount lenses we need. Why waste manufacturing capacity on this? If it was considerably cheaper or considerably smaller I could understand, but this just seems bonkers to me.
The 1.2 will be available at some point. Patience.
You meant to say the worst in the S primes, right? The Z pancake primes are nowhere close to the 35mm 1.8 S.
I have the tamrom 35mm f1.4 f mount, it is much bigger lens. plus add the adapter it is huge.
Yes, it is likely that this is a rebadged Tamron lens.
Exactly on light transmission!
