Have you tried it in backlight situations...does it flare much and bad or is it okay? :) I watched review of the new Canon RF35mm f1.4, and it flares really bad for 1500$ lens... :)
This is the review I was waiting for. I would love to see this compared to the original f-mount Sigma 35 ART... a legendary lens blending character and sharpness.
You just fully convinced me to save up this. I've never cared about clinical sharpness and just got a ZF in November. My favourite lens for every platform I've shot is always a 35mm 1.4 so this lens was almost made for me
Yep the ZF is just beautiful in every way, it's not as good as Z8 or even close to the Z6iii but who cares, you don't buy a Zf to be the best, you buy it for the love of how it looks, how it feels, and as in this video on the 1.4 35mm it's good enough, this is how I look at the ZF, it's not the best at ANYTHING, but it's good enough to do everything... It's the only Z camera I've loved and I've owned the Z8, Z6ii.... What I've found is this ZF make me feel like I did when I bought the D700 (my favourite camera of all time) I'd take this ZF over every camera I have owned including my old trusty D850...
Thank you for this comparison. I always wanted to get an S-line prime, but could never justify the cost. This 35mm f1.4 will be a perfect "premium" replacement for my little 40mm f2. My 40 f2 has been my favorite little street shooter, and I think this 35 f1.4 will be my new favorite for portraits. Thanks Ricci
I'm thinking the 24-120 f4 as my everyday lens plus the 35mm f1.4 for nighttime street and shallow depth of field shots. Great video as always amigo. Stay safe
28mm 1.4 with similar size and build would be super useful for documentary style weddings and events. It would probably be glued to one of my camera bodies for most of my work. Come on Nikon, you can do it!!
the most perfect and straight forward review . glad i found this video . i am happy with my super sharp F1.8S lenses i have the 20mm1.8 50mm1.8 85mm1.8 and next will be the 135mm1.8 . .. i always wanted a 35mm lense but could never see my self picking it over my 50mm for portait photography . .. ..
First time seeing your channel, probably because im interested in this lens, its looking good so far. I really hope it lives up to what im expecting, if it does I think Nikon will have a real winner on their hands, then they need to do a 50 and an 85 as well.
A wonderful comparison and explanation of the 2 lens choices. The boke shot pretty much explained everything I needed to know about the potential use case. For my purposes I prefer my 24mm and under focal lengths to be sharp as possible but would prefer my 28mm to short tele focal lengths to have some character and not necessarily be ultra sharp at wider apertures. Thanks again to Ricci for making this video.
The new 35mm 1.4 certainly looks a cracker, as someone who's had a 35mm 1.4 G welded to one of his cameras for more of the last decade, I think the new lens looks just as good in almost all scenarios, whilst also being at a starting price less then 1/3rd of the older mount! Now my big decision is just do I keep waiting for that other mythical lens ;) I think the big decider here will be size and if the next 35mm is a beast of a lens, loads of people will be far more excited to have this one in the bag! Awesome stuff as usual mate!
Thank you for this useful comparison. I like the direction Nikon is taking with the new f/1.4 lens. Additional control ring and smoother bokeh transitions are appreciated as well as the weight, size and price. Also a reason why i still like to use F-Mount lenses like the AF-S 105 mm f/1.4E ED which is a legend. I don't have the AF-S 58 mm f/1.4 but many people like it for the special image rendering it can give.
Both the 105 & 58 f mount lenses are really good examples of how a lens can be designed differently to accommodate different needs and they worked really well at their respective jobs !
Thanks so much for this video-I’d been waiting for it. I’ve been really struggling while weighing whether to get the 1.8 vs the 1.4. I’ve used the DSLR 1.4 version (rental) and LOVED it, but couldn’t justify the cost. I tend toward the “too clinical” feeling about the 1.8, but the 1.4 reviews so far have pretty much dunked on the limitations of the 1.4. Complicating things: the current sale price on the 1.8 vs the cost of the 1.4. Overthink much? Why, yes! At least now, I have what I think is a much more balanced look at the lens. I see many folks feel the 35mm is boring--that’s how I feel about the 50mm focal length. Proof that one person’s Goldilocks lens is another person’s brick. So appreciate your clarity in explaining things.
It’s really exciting and agree it’s all about choice and this will definitely give a little character. I’m in love with the bokeh already and yes please a 28 1.4 would be very interesting as well 😀🙏
This is the type of lens Nikon needed. Nikon needs to immediately add up more primes to this line and I WISH they would make the control ring be clickable and clickless. Would be really amazing for Zf-type bodies.
@@cryptobyt2403 Nothing that useful... The majority of users don't want anything assigned to it because it gets moved by accident. Indexing, or even a push/pull lock would prevent unwanted results. I'd like more tension on them myself. I think the AF ring should have this as well.
Thanks for bringing some sanity to the introduction of this lens! I can't believe how many outlets I saw saying "why did Nikon downgrade their 35mm S-line (presumably 1.2) lens? I want that, and they gave me this instead!" Just bananas. Hoping this is the start of a line of affordable, consumer-grade 1.4 primes!
F1.4 used to be label for pro grade lenses with excellent sharpness, build quality and all the latest tech, right up until the previous generation of Nikon F lenses launched in the 2010s. Some even less than a decade ago (28 1.4 & 105 1.4) .Why Nikon decided to break lens line up tradition and when other brands give out excellent F1.4s, we get F1.8's and budget F1.4's. I also don't understand why people are happy with this. What is wrong with affordable F1.8's and excellent F1.4's? Who ever complaint that this should be turnt upside down? Imagine Nikon launched a high end $2500 70-200 F4 with VR and a cheaper plastic feeling 70-200 f2.8 without VR and with softer corners. I guess everyone would just swallow it and call Nikon genius all over again.
@@caleidoo I dunno, I kinda see it as further stratification. You still have the 1.2 S models that meet all the qualities you mention: excellent, pro-grade, super sharp, extra fast. You also have an excellent 1.8 S models that are Pro/Prosumer level, super duper sharp, but not quite as fast if you want to save some money. Then a line of 1.4 models can be a hobbyist level for people who want something super fast, but don't need a clinical level of sharpness, instead preferring some "character" (or videographers).
@@caleidoo There is the upcoming 35mm f1.2S, which should be able to satisfy your requirement of "pro grade lenses with excellent sharpness, build quality and all the latest tech". If the f1.4 were also to be a S lens, the f1.2S and f1.4S could possibly eating into each other's market segment.
@@jackyleecs A 35mm F1.2 lens will be big and heavy. Not what I want. Also why I would never buy the 85/1.2 and went for the 85/1.8. I'm not looking forward to walking 12-18hrs with a 35/1.2. I have the 50/1.2, but that's because my Sigma 50 F1.4 broke by accident and I didn't want to go to Nikon 50/1.8. But a 35mm F1.4, I carry almost always together with a second body with a 85 F1.8. Light, compact and versatile. If this Nikon non-S 35/1.4 is adequately sharp or has no too obvious optical compromises, I can live with that. But It still feels weird to have to go to a "budget lens" with also lesser solid build and lack of coatings, if you want to continue to use F1.4. I don't like being forced to chose between stepping back to F1.8 or buying a huge, heavy and expensive F1.2. I was hoping Tamron or Sigma would come to the rescue, but I guess that an excellent third party 35/1.4 would mess up Nikon's line up strategy.
great video! but seriously, when has preproduction anything not been the same as production... its just bad practice to think/hope the production model will be better/fix all the problems of pre-production ... it just statistically never happens ... please dont get mad for me saying this -im hoping ur one of the only real dudes giving reviews on youtube .... you and @russ&lozproductions are the only ones not shilling me to death
My two questions: is it better & sharper wide open than the Sigma ART 35 1.4 with FTZ adapter - my only remaining F mount lens, next to the Nikon 105/1.4 which will probably remain cemented onto a FTZ forever. And secondly: will there be a difference in AF speed/stickiness in difficult light because of only one AF motor? I use my Sigma 35/1.4 for shots on the dance floor at weddings or events. Lots of movement, both from people & faces and spot lights and LEDs. I'm tempted to try it out, but if it's the same as the Sigma (optical/AF), but just without FTZ, I don't see the point and will just use the Sigma until it dies or gets stolen.
I own the sigma 35 1.4, but its kind of bulky and heavier with tje ftz. That being said, i got the 35 1.8, which is lighter and smaller, but its less sharp in the center, its an improvement on far corners sharpness and CA on extreme situations, but overall i dint like the bokeh, flare and color. I only kept it because it does helps my wrist on long days and for portability. I would like to see the flare and portraits with the new 35 1.4 nikkor to see if its better match for my taste, if not i guess i will be getting a tech adapter and sigma 35 dn. I dont mind only about sharpness but the overall character and looks too, i own the 58mm 1.4 whicj its very unpredictable in sharpness and lots of CA, but when the lens shines, it shines in a very unique way
@@ernestolopez3754 I always liked the rendering of the early ART series. Same with the 50mm F1.4 ART, but sold that one because I wanted to stop fiddling with the FTZ adapter and but not go to F1.8 - which is a visible difference. Hesitated long, but took the plunge with the Nikkor 50/1.2 S and it's an amazing lens. Boringly perfect, but great. Except the size of course. I was hoping Nikon (or Sigma/Tamron) would come with an excellent 35/1.4 for Z - would happily pay €1200 -1400 for it. But instead they gave is this 35/1.4 with cut corners and positioned lower than the F1.8 version. I'm disappointed, not going to lie. Especially because I see no logic in this backwards lens line up, no matter how many times fan boys are screaming it's a genius move. But I'll wait for my final verdict after using it through rental or just buying (read: trying) it on Amazon.
Excellent review. I've noticed with my Z lenses which are incredibly sharp, but that all the Z lenses I own feel like they produce the "same image" but at different focal lengths. I didn't understand exactly why I felt that way until I bought myself a Nikon F mount 58mm f1.4G lens. Although it is not very sharp, it has a character that I love. So glad that Nikon realized this themselves and gives a different perspective of a lens with character.
You like the same characteristics on a lens like me. I love such lenses which are giving special bokeh transitions (which i personally value more than ultimate sharpness). Another famous lens for great image rendering is the AF-S 105 mm f/1.4E ED.
Thanks for the amazing video and photographic comparisons between the 1.4 and the 1.8S. I LOVE the 35mm focal length and the Sigma 35 F/1.4ART has been my main workhorse for the past 3 years! I am freaking glad Nikon released this "affordable" 35 F/1.4 for the 35mm enthusiasts that still can't reach the 35 1.8S's budget. I'm definitely getting this lens for my Z6!
@RicciTalks I have been looking at replacing my sigma 35mm 1.4 Art lens that, combined with the FTZ adapter, is really heavy. I really like the image quality it gives me. I don't know if you have ever used this lens in the past, but if so how would you compare it to the new 35 in terms of sharpness, image quality and overall rendering? Thanks for the great, honest and useful job you are doing for the Nikon users.
Hlw I am very sorry to readily approaching a very new comment section but my nikon d5600 LCD stopped working it lights up but don't show anything else I have tried everything including doing force reset with two green dotted buttons(menu+ibutton) but still nothing works my battery is fully charged is there any way to turn it back on because they are saying it will take a lot of money to change it and take about a month but next week is my excursion group going for a tour and I don't have much time or money to spare what ccan I do ? And this was my first camera so its really closed to my heart so I don't wanna change it please help
Ricci, why does the new fast lenses does not have big glasses like in the old days, old vintage lenses even on 1.8 they have big chunky glasses on the fron but I see that today nikon lenses at f2 or even this at f1.4 they dont have or we canmot se a big glass on them. Do you know why????
I see a difference in AF speed tbh. I also looked up, that it has one motor instead of two motors in the 1.8. Anyway: the most important question is, if it is better or similar to the F-mount 35/1.4 with the same rendering. This looks like it…a comparison would be great!
Hi Ricci, thank you very much for your great video! As always! My question: is this new Nikon Z 35 mm f/1.4 better in terms of sharpness and bokeh compared to the « old » Nikon AF-S 35 mm f/1.4 G?
Hi Ricci, how would you compare it to 40/2? Focal length is almost the same and difference in aperture isnt that much (for me at least, usually I stop it from f/4 up). I own 50/1.8 which is usually too long for me, so i bought 40 and it was too soft, so i returned it. I love my 24-120, but it is too heavy for everyday carry with my Z5, so I am looking for something small around 35mm. 28/2.8 might be great too, but I am worried about the same softness as with the 40, as they are in the same price range. Thanks!
Could you please test the sunstar as well? So far in the Nikon Z line I have only found the 35mm 1.8Z and 24-120mm f4Z having beautiful sunstars. Not sure about this 35mm f1.4Z
I have spent the last few days with the 35mm 1.4Z and the Sigma Art 35mm 1.4 f mount on my Z7II. The sigma is still sharper. The nikon will get even around f3.2 and probably reach its peak at f5.6. Corner sharpness is better for the sigma, if it matters to your work. The field of view is very slightly wider on the sigma, but it feels like an in-lens correction on the nikon side to correct the distortion. The sigma has slightly more contrast as well and has a cooler colour rendition. The purple fringing is there indeed in the nikon, but a slider move in LR corrects it. I guess we will soon have a lens profile. I personally find the bokeh quite pleasing on the nikon side. I guess it's a question of preference. The biggest benefit of the z lens is the weight. If you add up the sigma, its lens hood and the ftz adapter, it reaches 835g. The nikon is half the weight. For contextual portaits and street photography I think it is an interesting lens option with a different character. If you need a better corner sharpness it might not be the best tool.
@riccitalks, any plans for an updated 35mm shootout? I think what might be more telling about the usefulness of this new 1.4 Z lens is how it compares in your controlled test against the once revered F mount 35 1.4G. Do you have any of your own observations from what you've seen against that lens? If it's an optical improvement i.e. sharper and with less aberrations then that once esteemed lens, then it's a complete and total winner , especially for 24 MP full frame cameras.
If Nikon makes a 50mm version like this at a similar price point they would sell like crazy!! The 58mm 1.4 is the only F mount lens that I've held onto just because the character is so amazing.
@8:10 Why the exposure is so different from f/1.4 and f/1.8? The brightness is different of the two pictures (bad testing), perhaps 1/4 of a stop, but even with that f/1.4 is more like f/1.7. And when both lenses at f/2.8 the difference between the two lenses is huge, probably 1/2 stop.
Really good vid. At the minute it looks used 1.8s lenses are going for about £450 - £500. So my choice is used S for around £150/£200 less than the 1.4 or a brand spanking new one. Still torn. Thoughts welcome!
I think if Nikon makes a successor of this lens they could add the additional control ring and a lens function button to it (for example to store focus position for astro photos).
Is there a rubber weather seal ring on 35mm 1.4? The 1.4 also looks to produce a less contrasty image than 1.8, but that would make sense having less optical coatings
Ricci, do you think that we'll also be getting a DX 35mm at one point or that this is it? I still want a 35 like the 24mm 1.7 DX and not use any S lenses with my Z30. Thanks for confirming about the 1.2 and I also agree on a 28 1.4.
Great review, as always. Thanks. In your opinion, would the 1.4 be better for video when shooting at its widest aperture for talking heads videos? I have the 35mm 1.8 with a Z9 and want to know what the focusing breathing comparison is like when using eye detection for focus. It's a shot, but just trying to get an excellent Bokeh environment look.
I would take 35mm 1.4, 50mm 1.8 S, 100mm 2.8 Macro and 24-120 f/4 S 😊 You get character, sharpness and reach 👌 35mm 1.4 is a lens Im gonna buy without hesitation because I love 35mm focal lenght
Can the 35mm 1.4 do linear manual focus for video? I know this is an S-Line feature but very much hope they’ve retained this option for the video shooters
Yes, a little off topic…but… Like many others I have a 35/1.8 S with an excessively tight mount. I am a strong bastard and one day I am sure I will rip off the mount… or worse. If you had yours repaired what solution did you take? Cheers
I think you nailed it. DX isn't selling as well as Full frame. I think this was originally supposed to launch as a DX 35mm f1.4 (50mm equivalent). Not wanting to lose the investment, Nikon adjusted it to support the full frame but it couldn't be labeled an "S" line. Otherwise, why would Nikon ever want to launch a substandard prime lens? This lens has only made me want to wait for an "S" edition of the 35mm with a function ring.
It seems that the 35 f/1,4 rear glass takes all the benefit of the large Z-mount (pretty impressive compared to my F-mount wide angle lenses). Side question : what is the location where you can watch puffins so close? Thanks again for your valuable reviews, Nikkor line-up is awesome.
South cost of Wales. But all in all it’s not the location, but the right time: May is probably the best (especially to capture those with plenty of fishes in their bill)
I love my f-mount Sigma 35mm f1.4, and when I moved to Z I tested and just never really liked the 35mm f1.8s lens and have kept using the Sigma on FTZ. It's still my go-to lens for both video and photo work. I would love to hear some impressions of how the new 35mm f1.4 compares to the Sigma. Thanks for the review!
I have spent the last few days with the 35mm 1.4Z and the Sigma Art 35mm 1.4 f mount. The sigma is still sharper. The nikon will get even around f3.2 and probably peaks at f5.6. @@prometheuslg thanks very much, that is very useful to me. 35mm is one of my go-to's and at some point I might get the 1.4z, but based upon what you're saying I don't need to hurry.
Great video! Would have liked to see a sharpness comparison at F1.8, F2, F2.2 range. Love that this came out, but it should have been 2 years ago for an 'imperfect' design.
Yeh I did those comparisons but it was much of the same the 1.4 really doesn’t catch up to the 1.8 until f2.8 /f4 so decided to remove those parts to keep the length of the video down.
But why this sharpness discussions again if this new lens is not about ultimate sharpness as discussed in the video? Personally i prefer a better bokeh than ultimate sharpness.
@@jorgepinogarciadelasbayonas for comparisons sake. It's not ALL about it, but it's still a crucial part of lens performance & I shoot at F2-2.2 a lot, personally.
Needs comparisons at mid and far distance for bokeh. Please get inspiration from Philip Reeve Net bokeh reviews. The puffin shot at 10:00 has nervous bokeh already on the right of the bird and strong foreground bokeh swirl.
Transition zone with highlights/edges is almost always the hardest to render smooth, you already see what you want to know here I think. Plus it's the smallest lightest modern 35/1.4, it will not be some bokeh master in every situation and it basically must swirl ;)
Ricci, I'm not sure how much of Nikon's ear you have access to, but it would be next level to have some lenses with a dedicated aperture ring. Like those on the Fuji G-mount system or like the Sony 24/40/50 Prime G Lenses or even the G-Master offerings that have the "Automatic" and the graduated F-stops. Even some zooms like the 24-70 M2. Affordable would also be key, even if they split out some S-line (more GM like) lenses. I feel there is a huge demand for lenses with such "versatile" aperture rings. While the programmable rings are great, having a dedicated/graduated ring with detents would be better for some primes/zooms. What I'd really love is to rock a more compact prime or even zoom with aperture ring even if the optical quality is more F-mount than Z-mount to keep cost low. I miss the feeling of a D750 and a small prime for travel/street photography. While the 35/50 1.8's are exceptional they're just massive compared to my old F-mount lenses.
I still don't understand this: You can program the function ring to modify aperture values. Why does it still need a separate aperture ring which is only able to control one thing?
@@RicciTalks I see a lot more logic in affordable F1.8 lenses and priced accordingly F1.4 & F1.2 lenses, you know, like it has been for decades and how it is perceived in people's head. And not just Nikon, but all other brands. Why not offer, say, a cheap & small F2.8, good F1.8 at €400, and excellent F1.4 at €1200 ish and a stellar F1.2 at €2000-2500. Why would a pro photographer want a sharp 50mm or 35mm.... but not a F1.4 much rather have a F1.8? I have yet see the reason why Nikon decided to drop that line up logic and confuse people and potential customers. I can't see how this decision has helped Nikon attract more buyers.
@@caleidoo I don't know how people can criticize Nikon for giving choices. Ricci gave a very good explanation of the difference in those two lenses. They also don't live in a bubble, they see the competition of cheap chinese lens with better and better quality at more affordable prices. This one is starting at 600 USD, and in one year will have long promos for 500-550 USD, that will be real competitive against those. Since the launch of the Z cameras, price have gone up dramatically, yes quality also, but not everyone has the means to pay themselves a f 1.8 primes in the range of 800usd to 2400 USD. Before during the Fmount years, it was like 500 to 1500 USD. Not everyone wants tack sharp, you could get a set of 35, 50, 85 for the same price of one 1.2S lens and also the same weight.
@@danielvilliers612 You missed my point. I don't criticize Nikon for giving choices. It criticize what the available choices are. I never met someone who in the past decades said that he or she would rather see a line up of expensive F1.8 lenses and cheaper F1.4 lenses with cut backs to bring the price down. During F mount, you could go all the way back to AF-D lenses if budget was low. Even for F1.4. I don't see how the argument "everything got more expensive" can be a valid explanation for Nikon turning F1.4 lenses - the workhorses of most pros - into starter or entry level lenses BELOW a F1.8 line. And yes sharpness is not everything, but this lens also lacks coating to combat flare, controls on the lens and has half of the AF power.
Everyone I know in photography love shooting 35mm,? But for me 😂... I prefer 20mm and yes 28mm or in S line 40mm and the outstanding 50mm, I have never liked Any 35mm it's just not me.... And now I actually found someone who shares my view😊.... As always great video and yes even though I don't like the 35mm I watched the full video because it still interesting to see what it's capable off, and in photography the old rule you're always been educated in something,
Hey
I hope that you find this first look at the 35mm 1.4 useful.
If you have any questions about the 35mm 1.4 let me know !
thanks for watching 🙂
Have you tried it in backlight situations...does it flare much and bad or is it okay? :)
I watched review of the new Canon RF35mm f1.4, and it flares really bad for 1500$ lens... :)
One question was if this lens supports linear focus for video?
Could you please tell nikon to make SE version for Zf.
Could you compare it to the common 24-x zooms? At F/2.8 or even F/4? For those of us with the focal length covered what do we gain? Thanks
Hi Ricci, interesting lens , not for me a 28mm would be my choice . Another great video thanks
This is the review I was waiting for. I would love to see this compared to the original f-mount Sigma 35 ART... a legendary lens blending character and sharpness.

Thanks a lot ! 😊

The 1.8 is so much better
Thank you for this comparison. I always wanted to get an S-line prime, but could never justify the cost. This 35mm f1.4 will be a perfect "premium" replacement for my little 40mm f2. My 40 f2 has been my favorite little street shooter, and I think this 35 f1.4 will be my new favorite for portraits. Thanks Ricci

@@RicciTalksThat’s interesting… So would you say that the 35 1.4z compares closer to the E series or G series of F Mount Nikon lenses?
I owned the magical Nikkor Noct 58mm f1.2 Ai for over 40 years, it wasn’t the sharpest but it gave a fantastic image!
The 105 f/1.4 is one of my favorite lenses.
Very interesting review (as always 😊), especially on the depth of field capabilities with very reprentative pictures 👍🏻
I agree 28 1.4 would be needed!
Evan a 28 1.8 S
That's the one I've been waiting for. Getting very close to just buying the F-mount version.
@@madst7521the 28mm 1.4 is sooo good.
Very much agree, as well.
Agreed. I finally just picked up an F mount Sigma Art 28mm 1.4 to adapt to my Z7ii and Z8.
Excellent video, professional and complete, it helped me a lot to make a choice and I thank you for it. Pierre
Thank you for this video! My dream would be a combo of similar style 28mm 1.4 and 40mm 1.4.
Hopefully
It’s really exciting and agree it’s all about choice and this will definitely give a little character. I’m in love with the bokeh already and yes please a 28 1.4 would be very interesting as well 😀🙏
This is the type of lens Nikon needed. Nikon needs to immediately add up more primes to this line and I WISH they would make the control ring be clickable and clickless. Would be really amazing for Zf-type bodies.
Why? Nikon control ring can be reassigned to something else?
@@cryptobyt2403 Nothing that useful... The majority of users don't want anything assigned to it because it gets moved by accident. Indexing, or even a push/pull lock would prevent unwanted results. I'd like more tension on them myself. I think the AF ring should have this as well.
Fantastic review. Thank you. And yes. 28mm 1.4 AND 50mm 1.4, both with classic rendering and no size tax!!!
Thanks for the video. I hope Nikon will listen you about a similar 28mm 1.4 !
Thank you homie. Sounds like a winner for me. I always seek "value" in my purchases.
That's actually a surprising nice lens, the rendering is very pretty. Now I will just have to wait for the 1.2 S line to compare haha
thanks Ricci, you changed my opinion on this lens.
p.s please ask Nikon to include control / aperture rings on all primes from now on, thank you :)
I have the Z8 and Zf in use with a great collection of S lenses and must admit I rather like the 40/2 and 28/2.8 giving that nice classic rendering!
Thanks for the balanced review, informative.
Thank you, Ricci, for the great information!
Glad it was helpful!
Thank you Ricci. Now clear 👍🏻👍🏻🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼
Excellent comparison. I feel satisfied with my 35 1.8S after seeing the difference. I'll be holding out for the 35 1.2S now.
great video! but seriously, when has preproduction anything not been the same as production... its just bad practice to think/hope the production model will be better/fix all the problems of pre-production ... it just statistically never happens ... please dont get mad for me saying this -im hoping ur one of the only real dudes giving reviews on youtube .... you and @russ&lozproductions are the only ones not shilling me to death
I really hope they come out with a series of primes in this range. In particular a 50 that is a bit more compact and cheaper than the 50 1.8 S.
Fortunately I am using 35mm f1.4 and I am so happy till now 😅, thank you so much for this nice comparison 👌👌👌
Great review. Thank you.
I preordered on the first day. Then I had thoughts if I should cancel and get the 1.8. But I will keep the order after this 😊
My two questions: is it better & sharper wide open than the Sigma ART 35 1.4 with FTZ adapter - my only remaining F mount lens, next to the Nikon 105/1.4 which will probably remain cemented onto a FTZ forever.
I feel you with the 28 / 1.4 🤩
Excellent review.
@@jorgepinogarciadelasbayonas Yes I also have the 105 f1.4 which is sharper than the 58 f1.4 :)
35 mm is my personal favourite.❤❤❤❤
Great...I'm buying this :D
Great, helpful review. Thanks a lot!
Thanks Ricci, how about using the 35/1.4 for landscapes? Is it sharp enough corner to corner at F8?
Matt Irwin said that this lens is better than the old one...we will see... :)
Thanks. I am happy keeping my 1.8 and I do hope for a 28 one day!
Sounds perfect to me 👌🏻
Waiting for the day you post that 14mm 1.8 S video. I know you want that lens as well.
Hi Ricci, thank you very much for your great video! As always! My question: is this new Nikon Z 35 mm f/1.4 better in terms of sharpness and bokeh compared to the « old » Nikon AF-S 35 mm f/1.4 G?
I’m so with you on 28mm, my favourite focal length
Great! Thank you.
How about sunstar effect shape when you tighten the aperture and take a night view?? Does it come in a sharp shape like a z35.8s lens??
Thanks for the review! Would it be possible to review some third-party lenses, like the ultrawide 11mm TTartisan or the Tamron Z series?
I have a sigma 35mm f1.4 art lens using it with ftzII adaptor should I switch to nikon z 35mm f1.4 ? Should it make a difference ?
thanks for video. In regards to questions, you never did a video on the 28-400mm, comparing against the 100-400mm etc.. would love to see this.
It’s almost done
Hi Ricci, Where did you get your Nikon Zf GR1 grip? I can't find it in the UK. Thanks
4:22 I have the 20mm/f1.8 S and I really missing the control ring on it, I feel robbed when I see this new not-S line lens with one....
I think if Nikon makes a successor of this lens they could add the additional control ring and a lens function button to it (for example to store focus position for astro photos).
Yeh for sure !
I would like to see a M/A ring and a control ring on all lenses going forward as long as there big enough for it obviously
What about distortion and vignetting? I'd like to see a comparison.
I think yes because bokeh rendering on this new lens looks better wide open.
@@jorgepinogarciadelasbayonas thanks. Do you have the 35mm 1.8/I've been using the 50mm 1.2, which I love, but want a little more environment.

It would be nice to compare it to the 40mm F2, i'm sure the 35 1.4 would be better but at what point ? :)
Can't make every photographer happy, so true. I personally want bokeh like this lens has but I really don't like LoCA

Can the 35mm 1.4 do linear manual focus for video? I know this is an S-Line feature but very much hope they’ve retained this option for the video shooters
Hey Ricci and anyone that could chime in, How does it compare against the 28mm 1.4e?
That bokeh is just gorgeous. And with the extra speed I think I'll be getting this
I notice you don’t have hoods on your lenses. Don’t you find a huge loss of contrast without the hoods?
It seems that the 35 f/1,4 rear glass takes all the benefit of the large Z-mount (pretty impressive compared to my F-mount wide angle lenses). Side question : what is the location where you can watch puffins so close? Thanks again for your valuable reviews, Nikkor line-up is awesome.
South cost of Wales. But all in all it’s not the location, but the right time: May is probably the best (especially to capture those with plenty of fishes in their bill)

Hello Ricci, Thank you, I was just thinking a S line lens should come at some point
Great video! Would have liked to see a sharpness comparison at F1.8, F2, F2.2 range. Love that this came out, but it should have been 2 years ago for an 'imperfect' design.
It'd be nice to see the comparisons but 1.8S is still sharper at F2.8 than 1.4. So it's safe to assume it's sharper through that range.
Yeh I did those comparisons but it was much of the same the 1.4 really doesn’t catch up to the 1.8 until f2.8 /f4 so decided to remove those parts to keep the length of the video down.
ok thank you@@RicciTalks
But why this sharpness discussions again if this new lens is not about ultimate sharpness as discussed in the video? Personally i prefer a better bokeh than ultimate sharpness.
@@jorgepinogarciadelasbayonas for comparisons sake. It's not ALL about it, but it's still a crucial part of lens performance & I shoot at F2-2.2 a lot, personally.
Exactly what I've been waiting for. Too bad it doesn't come in the SE style.
The 35mm 1.8s focus motor is loud and slow, how is it on the f1.4?
You are the first i hear about this. Have you checked it against other copies?
@@jorgepinogarciadelasbayonas yeah if you google "Nikon 35mm 1.8s noise" you will see what I am referring to.
Needs comparisons at mid and far distance for bokeh. Please get inspiration from Philip Reeve Net bokeh reviews.
The puffin shot at 10:00 has nervous bokeh already on the right of the bird and strong foreground bokeh swirl.
Don't know where you are seeing strong nervous bokeh. Looks fine to me.
I purchased the 35 1.8 S last weekend.
SE version with click aparature ring would be amazing 😀
Did you go to Skomer Island? How did you get so close to the puffin?
There are lots of places around the U.K. where you can get this close to puffins.
This was at Skomer though
So now we are getting a 1.4 line of lenses? Seems redundant with the 1.2 lenses unless they are priced low.
I think a low priced range of 1.4 lenses would be nice
The choice of
Expensive high end f1.8 & f1.2
Or
Low cost f2.8/f2 & f1.4
Why should this be bad to have more choices in the lens ecosystem? It's affordable.
