I got one during summer. Since I have the 50mm 1.8 already, I felt I would get more variety in my collection with the 35mm 1.4, rather than the 1.8. I use it mostly for low light shots with the Z6.
Very interesting. I don't know if the exposure was slightly different or something else impacting it, but the shots from the 1.4 look more saturated on my screen.
I jumped on the Venus Optics 35mm f/0.95 as soon as it was released. For some things, I can easily manage no auto focus. At the time, I also picked up the Nikon 35mm f/1.8 Z so can have a 35mm with AF for certain projects.. I passed on this 35 1.4 and got the superior (imo) 50mm f/1.4 - been shooting both 35s for years. My clients always love the look of the f 0.95. It's very popular with clients. If i didn't get that lens, I'd still be waiting for nikon to release the $2,800 35mm f/1.2 behemoth 😊
Thanks for the Shoreham shoot. I don't have a 35mm lens and can't make up my mind which to get? It's been fifty plus years since have been on the Shoreham beach. It brings back memories. Now I spend time when I can on Noosa Heads beach. 😄
I have the 35 f/1.8 - probably the least used of my Z primes. It is nice and sharp but also fairly boring. The 35 f/1.4 would likely have been my choice if I'd been buying now, but it was really hard to spot any differences apart from when it is shot at f/1.4.
I’ve never owned - or even used - a 35 prime. But I think it’s about time. Will be going for the 1.4, but my ideal choice would be the 1.8 except with separate Control & Focus rings. I expect holiday promos to hit the 1.4 (and Z6III? 🤗) so I’m patiently waiting 🎅🏻
If I started my Lens collection again I’d probably go for it for the price.. I’d also do the rebadged tamron trinity to save on size and weight.. ultimate top of the line optics is great but weight does eventually become a factor
Sorry off the subject. Is there a good chart showing what AF lenses work with the F4,F5, and F6. As well as the F100, F501, F301, F80, and F90? I am so confused.
Hi, thanks for the review! What I really want to see is a comparison between the Z 35mm f1.4 to the old one 35 f1.4G, I love the character of the old one, but I could not find any direct comparison between them.
As i saw...new Zf1.4 lens is probably little bit sharper in the middle, lighter, with better focus and control ring...but older G version have smoother bokeh(new Z lens looks more like f1.6 lens to me, becouse of the more harsh bokeh), probably little bit less CA in the corners...old G version has nano crystal coatings, so it's probably takes little bit nicer photos. :)
I suppose that if I did not have a 35mm Z mount lens, I would seriously consider the F1.4 but I already have the F1.8. I don't see enough difference to justify a switch although that auxiliary ring is a nice touch.
That is consistent with other online observations. The creamy bokeh is in the center and mid-frame whereas it breaks down near the perimeter. Will update this comment with a link if I find where I saw that. The 1.8S is consistent with bokeh for what that's worth.
I already had a TAMRON 35 mm f1.8 for F Mount that I use with my DSLRs. When Nikon announced the 35 mm f1.4 and even though it wasn't an "S" lens, I decide to give it a try. I am not sorry I did.
I belive an S line version can coexist along with this n cater the needs of hybrid shooters. 1.4 S line can be a optimum balance of quality charecterictic weight and price
I'm with you dude - the old AFS lenses are much nicer. I have 7 of their Z lenses, but going to sell a few of them. However, one is total magic and I use it for nearly all of my paid shoots and that's the 24-70 2.8s. The images from this lens are sheer magic. I did a big shoot last Sunday and have finished all my editing and the images from that lens are stunning. However, my new secret weapon is the AFS 28mm 1.4 E. Oh boy, this lens is stunning. I'll probably sell my 35 1.8s, because it's a bit too long and my 24mm 1.8s is a bit too wide. I find the 28mm focal length perfect and that 1.4 lens with the adapter on my Z6ii, produces stunning images. The Z 50mm 1.8s is stunningly sharp but a bit too clinical (the images from the 24-70 zoom look nicer). I didn't like the plastic 28mm Z, because the F2.8 is the killer. The 40mm F2 is a bit better, but not great. Anyway, no complaints here, we live in a fantastic age for great camera gear and we can certainly experiment, sell off what's no good and be left with the cream.
It's lovely to have all these choices; 35 40 50 in 1.4 or 1.8 or f2. Having already a 'character' 40mm f2, is there a logical added value for either this 35 1.4 of 50 1.4?
As always, great video!! I like the fun intro regarding Miami. Does the 50mm f/1.4 have similar "character" to the 35mm f/1.4? And how do the Voigtlander 35mm & 50mm f/2 APO-Lanthar lenses compare to these f/1.4 Nikons as far as character (and your preferred lens)? Also I'm looking forward to your reviews of the new APO-Lanthar II lenses in a few months 🙂
Oh boy. I can still hear my mama saying "the sea will get empty" Thanks for the 'review' though. Don't forget to go and see Lucy Thomas on the 22nd in Th. Royal Drury lane. See you there?😄
Still waiting for 1.2 version. And I really hope it's out for another wedding season, because that 1.8 version is the worst Z glass I have and 1.4 is no better.
Thanks guys, I was already pretty sure but now I’m definitely going to add one of these to my kit

Had mine since july and I love it. Hoping for a 58mm f/1.4 and a 85mm f/1.4 non S-line soon
I shoot portraits so center sharpness is important to me but I like character. Would you say the 35 1.4 is sharp? What camera are you using it with?

This looks like it will be great for portraits. Definitely a nice look when comparing the two especially on the video shots.
On an overcast day, all lenses perform well. I’d imagine a sunnier day may show off the coatings on the S lens better.
Thank you for the review of the 35's! You are the best resource on the internet in my opinion!
I shoot portraits so center sharpness is important to me but I like character. Would you say the 35 1.4 is sharp for eyes and family portraits?
At the end of the video with Kon went silent, the same thing happened to me. I moved my arms and my mic fell off. Sometimes Silence is Golden. Cheers!

I love my 17-28 F2.8 and 28-75 F2.8, but I went with the Nikon 70-200 F2.8 S Love all of them.
Great video. I would pick the 1.4

@3:42 what is going on with the bokeh? The middle, just behind Becky, seems to have much more blurr than the edges at that same distance? : /
Seems to have the same problem @4:44
Partly optical illusion. Try turning the screen so the sea is level. But the edges do look sharper to.

In terms of build quality which one has more plastic? And why is the 1.8 more expensive than the 1.4?

superb Video thx for comparing ! Maybe would be interesting to compare with z-adapter and F 35mm 1.4 😉

Which Lans and cemera use you this video ?
Nikon ZF
I have the 1.8 S, and I love it. The secret sauce thing is BS,😂. That 1.8 is a stellar lens .
You do you boo!
Why was Kon censored in the closure? ...
And why not take a swim? I would! :) All year around if I lived by the sea.
Both 1.8 and 1.4 are way too big for me.
That's the problem with mirrorless; the bodies are smaller but the lenses are bigger. If you want to carry more than one lens you start to lose out.
Trouble is now. You can pick up a minty s/h 1.8 for way less than a new 1.4.
Still waiting for “the special one”

@@gnthr7992 you know about any better one?
@@jindrichnejedlyphotography Just attach Tamron 35mm f1.4 with FTZ adapter, and you will have great combo :D
They would have atleast made a 1.4 S line for hybrid shooters
