@@MrSimonj1970 it has never been about mirrorless or DSLR. It's about having an option to blur off the background a little more or getting to use a lower ISO. If you think the viltrox is better just because it is sharper, sharpness doesn't determine whether your photo is good or not. A sharp photo with bad lighting or composition is just a bad photo in high quality. Also, when you stop down a large aperture lens, it gets sharper. Reviews will tell you the viltrox is sharper but once you stop down the nikon to 2.5 or 2.8 it's par for the course, they will be the same. And then there's the bonus of reducing vignetting.
I went back to a post I put on Flickr 5 years ago. It said "If you want a 50mm f/1.8 S in the 🇬🇧 see Grays Of Westminster who has them at £315 new! " Those were the days!
The 1.4's are also slower focussing, suffer with heavy sun glare issues and on the used market its the same price as the 1.8S. Does character have to mean less quality?
I was surprised that out of focus backgrounds looked rather busy. Is that how they are in general with this lens or just the nature of the subject? I've been shooting the Sony 50 f/1.4 on my Zf (with the Megadap adapter) to have 1.4 and an aperture ring. The Nikon 50 f/1.4 interests me as a native solution, with 1.4 and its control ring that can be dedicated to apertures. But I'm not ready to give up smooth backgrounds.
At the time being - January 2024 (even since December 2024) - the prices of the 35 and 50 1.4 lenses are more expensive than the 35 and 50 1.8 S-line lenses in Sweden ...
These 1.4 lenses are for the fuji fans who came over for the ZF and used the classic 35mm 1.4, 23mm 1.4, 18mm f2 and 60mm macro fuji lenses and want 3D pop vintage rendering. As was said in the video, the S line of lenses is for people who want complete perfection across the board and don't want anything other than perfection.
I'd describe the S line 1.8's as having a starting point of "perfection" (better optical clarity across the image), because adding imperfections / character in post is an easy option. Can't really go the other way in post if starting point is a 1.4. But that's ok too, if that's what someone likes. I'm considering the 35 1.4, but the 50 1.8 is a must-have for me.
They need to bring their prime prices down now people have so many great alternatives from Viltrox, Meike, Samyang etc etc. It won't be long before they perfect zooms too. I can't see myself buying any more Nikon primes TBH, they're just not worth the extra.
Hi i just posted my first photography short on this channel and Changed the name to Camera Love & Photography. I plan to post shorts like this and keep it simple for now. Til I can get better like you guys. Please feel free to check it out! I'm trying out my new Yashica Electro GSN Rangefinder, that I found at a second hand store for $15.00, and it works perfectly for a 50 year old camera 📸. Im starting to love film way too much...
Nikkor Z 40mm f2 is the new "nifty fifty".🤘
Viltrox 40mm is much better and £125
@MrSimonj1970 Thank you! Where can I see the proof?
@@MrSimonj1970 but it's f2.5. I'll take brighter aperture any day
@EXkurogane makes no difference with mirrorless at all. It's a much better lens, I've used both.

Waiting on the 85 1.4. But can’t wait that long. Hope it’s soon

I would like a 28mm 1.4

Nikon Z 50mm f1.4 as well as Z 35mm f1.4 has more character, so bokeh is not smooth as of Sony 50mm f1.4... :)

I already have the Zf with the 50 mm 1.8 S, so I have no need for the 1.4. However, as always I did enjoy your brief review. Thank you
I love the soft classic rendering of my 35/1.4 Z better than than mt 35/1.8 S!
Have you noticed the magenta octopus above your heads?
No, it went completely over his head.
Tried this lens and the 35mm f/1.4, unfortunately the CA is pretty bad wide open.
Wow, a Mamiya 7ii medium format rangefinder... that is a nifty camera...

@ exactly it’s just nice that Nikon (intentionally or not) have made these lenses for different types of preferences.
Thanks for the review
Hey dear Grey’s Angels! Can you please tell me what is that strap on Becky’s Zf?
It’s a Peak Design strap.
@ Thank you appreciate that!
A pity that the 50mm f/1.4 doesn't have weather sealing, especially in places like Britain.

Viltrox 56 f/1.7 for me 😁
