Great examples. One question...when using an umbrella, how close to you put the flash to the umbrella as there is a lot of room to play with the way it's connected. I hope I explained that correctly.
I know i am not Gavin but let me answer anyway. If you have an 7 inch reflector on the strobe make sure the edge of the reflector is in line with edge of the umbrella. I hope that helps. I am not sure with speedlights you probably have to zoom the fernel head.
The umbrella essentially becomes your light source in a sense so you typically want to adjust your light (speed light or otherwise) so that if fills the umbrella surface but doesn’t go around it. But you could adjust the light so that it only fills part of the umbrella and it will give you a little bit more of a direction because you’re not filling the umbrella with light. So simply move the umbrella closer to or further away from the light until you get your desired outcome. If you have a modeling light this can be used to give you an idea or just hit the test fire button on the light itself and see if it’s filling the whole surface of the umbrella or not. Hope this helps, every umbrella will be different based on the size of that umbrella.
You just saved me getting all mine out to see what they do 😊 Really useful thank. How do you manage to swivel your strip box ? I’ve got mine on a Bowen’s mount on a C stand on a boom arm 😊

@@jerrym8140 Thanks, Jerry...that helps a lot. Is it better to go bare bulb so the light is not as focused?
Thank you Gavin, very helpful!
we love you SO from France 🥰
Happy new year Chloe and gavin team
Hello Gavin, thanks for sharing.
I liked the umbrella the best. Why did you not take out the 7ft indirect umbrella or did you sell it Mary Poppins?

What about light patterns and dispersion for beauty dishes?
