Fantastic review, there are so many big RUclipsrs who don’t review lenses properly anymore. I think Nikon missed an opportunity, they should’ve made the lens better and pleased a lot more people, just imagine if it was a 1.4 S.
I was super unimpressed with the 35 F1.8s, which was disappointing coming from F-Mount and loving 35mm framing. Happy to pick up this new artistic 35 1.4. Price was great, for me. Re no manual switch, can't you just use full time focus ring override, then back button AF to get AF back? I could be wrong.
Very good balanced review, now subscribed 👍 I will buy this lens even though I own the 1.8 purely because I love the dreamy look added to the phenomenal bokeh makes this a great event photography lens. Looking forward to the 1.2 lens but in all honesty I think this option at this price is great and can see it pairing well with a Zf and its lower resolution 😀
This looks very similar to the issue I had when I purchased a second hand 50mm 1.4G, my 50mm 1.8G was much sharper and the 50mm 1.4G needed to be stoped at F2.8 or so to be acceptable…this had nothing to do with fine tuning…I directly sold it again. On the other hand there is no better lens than the Sigma 40mm 1.4 or 50mm 1.4 which are beasts of sharpness and global IQ
Yeah but that with the 8MP is not True :) most Cameras have higher resolution Sensors and use the Resolution to create a better looking 4K Video. Like I show here in the Video, you see a clear advantage from the 35/1.8 Lens. But maybe that sharpness is not what the Moste People are Looking for.
The S lenses were quite expensive…. These lower tier lenses are a welcome addition. And adding the control ring will sway folks like me that stayed with Fuji for the controls.
I think I would prefer the 1.4. What it gives up in sharpness wide open it makes up with better character and bokeh. Nice lens at a nice price and great for video
Would you compare the Sony version, so you close the triangle of big brands. For image quality, you can adapt it to Nikon, but when adapted, you can't say anything about autofocus.
@@davision-en As much as I want to speak German, sadly I only understand a few words. New video would be nice and useful. Just compare the three. I'm shocked that the Canon lens is out for "so long" and Jared Polin, the biggest Canon guy I know, hasn't made one yet.
I have the lens, it looks better than my "perfect" 1.8. Sharpness should be measured by how the photo is to viewed, not zoomed in. Pretend like computer monitors don't exist. How does look as a print? All the flaws give great character.
Thank you for this review. I like very much that you simultaneaously gave examples for the statements you gave. I have almost all the S-lenses for the Z mount for my Z8 and Zf - only on the short end I'm lacking lenses. I recently bought a Leica Q3 with its 28mm fixed prime, and given what I've learned - not the least by your contribution - my decisions were confirmed: On the short end I'll mainly shoot with the Leica Q3 in the future which complements my Nikon gear, which is for middle to longer ranges, sport, wildlife, etc. Street on the other hand will be the domain of Leica where it reigns supreme. Many thanks again for confirming my strategic choices. :-)
The busy Bokeh keeps me from considering the 1.4. I do not like this. I still do not understand how the Bokeh mess of the 1.4 fits to its cleaner, rounded points in Bokeh tests.
Depends on what you find important. I had this lens and sold it. It was not weather sealed, much bigger with the FTZ adapter, focused loudly and slowly. In Canada, it's a hard winter 8 months of the year, making the sigma kind of a pain in the ass to manage moisture with. Sigma35 + FTZ is about 900 grams; 35 1.4z is 415g -- 46%, making the sigma 2.2x heavier. Finally, if you want to film with it, you only get 1 or 2 stops of IBIS on third party lenses vs 5 with native. Big difference.
@@davision-en Keeping my Sigma 35 F1.4 ART with its FTZ adapter surely is, even if it's frustrating. Quite the disappointment, this Nikon lens. Nikon believing all the pros will just buy the huge €3000 35mm F1.2, weighing three times this 35/1.4, is ridiculous.
no, they are just looking at the price of other mirrorless 35mm 1.4 lenses and using logic to see this is the cheapest one. even older dslr lenses like the Tamron SP 35mm f/1.4 Di USD cost about the same.
Mich gibt es auch in Deutschland da ich aber auch ganz passable Englisch spreche biete ich meine Videos nun auch in Englisch an. Wüsste nicht wo das ein Problem sein sollte.
All we need is more confusing lens in Nikon Z mount. Please release the budget 85mm f1.4 😂
Best comparative review of this lens so far, great job!
Thank you!
hi David !
thank you for the English versions !
High Quality video, great job! Didn't expect a 500 subscriber account. Thanks for the info!
Thank you :) I just started making more videos in english as well, my main Channel is in German.
Incredibly helpful comparison, thank you 💯
Great review. I like the character of the 35mm F1.4. Especially for portraits.

I guess they don't want to give up to the "perfect" lens hype with the new 1.4 Series. This are character Lenses and I love it. :)

If you like the Artistic charme this will suit you well.
Thanks for this review, I am looking to buy the 35 1.4 or 1.8 for wedding photography, what would you suggest is worth more?
I personally like the 1.4 for the character but the 1.8 S for it's better optical performance, you need to know what you value more :)

As expected, but maybe it will be a cheaper lens in a kit with a camera for beginners.🤔

I don't think its an issue here at all, the lens is cheaper, not more expensive like with the 1.4G and 1.8G.
Its a good lens for videomakers where they mostly work with 8 mpix resolution. Nice video.

I don't think they really needed a 1.4 but non S lens. Makes no sense. Now the 1.4 a is going to be crazy expensive
I guess they plan on a 35/1.2

@@singletrack29349 fair comment 1.8 would been where I would have sacrificed but not the 1.4. But I’m glad the entry level is lower now.

It has great character but also some major flaws like in the Bokeh. Thats just ugly.

What confuses me is people taking pictures at text to review a lens :D:D:D
Why not, whats so confusing about this?
I'm going with the canon 1.4. lol. Because I can tell you like it so much.
10:35 you tested autofocus speed. Have you tried in afs or afc? I didn’t try it my self but I heard that afc is better and faster.
I tested AF-C as you can see in the Video Shown at the AF Test. AF-S is from yesteryears and is always slower.
@@rbob4931 Thats not true, AF-S is substantially slower with Nikon Cameras.
So many have been waiting for Nikon to come out with a f/1.4 Z mount lens.
Just feel Nikon could have done a better job designing this lens.
This is not the highend 35 people have been looking for
I like mine 35 mm 1.4. ;)
When writing the English language the dollar sign goes in front of the numerals
I don’t care or do you say dollar 599 or do you say 599 dollar ? 😜

Das ist natürlich keine KI

I also don't understand is that well, Bokeh for clear light sources is so nice looking, while with Leaves and Sun it is a bit messy.
im not. this is innovation in lineup strategy
For sure a cheaper used SIGMA ART 35mm 1.4 (adapted) at around $400, will beat the living daylight out of the Nikon
Sure but double the weight not sealed way bigger and worse AF.
