Truly curious about this lens. I currently have a 35mm 1.8 and absolutely love it. Was about to pull the trigger on the 50mm 1.8 but now I’m second guessing. The idea of a pancake in a pocket sounds nice as long as it’s sharp at 2 or 2.8 since I mostly shoot there anyway.
@@gwm88 i mean as long as you don’t need clinically sharp images you are good. i just love the micro contrast that makes the images look 3 dimensional. which 35mm you have btw ?
You need to focus on photo projects. For example one day you do only animals, the next day you do only macro, the next day only portraits, ...but if you don't know what to photograph this can happen.
Manage your expectations! 😂 If you think your lenses cover everything, but the right one is not mounted, then that’s the feeling. For events I take two bodies with one covering wide and one covering long. Two f/2.8 zooms! That covers 95% of everything.
You make a best Z-mount lenses list without including the Z105/2.8 macro?! It's an absolutely FANTASTIC lens. It's super sharp edge-to-edge already wide open, has incredible contrast and a beautiful bokeh. I'd even say it's probably the best macro lens ever made. It's also very versatile and excellent for several other types of photography.
Came here to say this. Might be more of a niche prime for some folks, but it’s an incredible portrait lens in a similar range as the 135mm Plena. If you are in fact a macro photographer, I think it’s the best lens for that on any system. It’s so sharp and beautiful - my Z5 is actually the thing holding back my photos with it!
Seriously? It's so insanely good. It's big. But it's also light, and it does two things very very very well: macro and portrait. Definitely among the best on the system.
The Tamron Z 35-150 2/2.8 is a lens that I agree with Jordan on, and enthusiastically recommend. It is truly a Swiss Army knife of an optical tool...it does everything...and does it exquisitely. My primary working kit has been greatly reduced and now includes just the Nikkor Z 14-24 2.8 (the definition of a perfect wide angle lens), Tamron 35-150, the 26 2.8 (for walkaround/street), the Z 50 1.8 (no brainer) and the old F-mount Sigma 100-400 w/FTZ for occasional telephoto needs; its performance is really surprising on the Z8. But, 90% of the time, the 35-150 is what is locked on to my camera. It's really that great.
I am actually interested in the Tamron 35-150mm but my only issue is the weight. I would need to wait a few years for Tamron to release a lighter new version... Unlike Chris, I would be more interested in a prime 35mm than a 50mm. I heard the Sony version is quite amazing though
@@mcandelacom yes, the 35-150 is certainly a chunky piece of glass. However, I find that it pairs nicely with my equally chunky Z8. Overall, for me, the performance and versatility outweighs (literally) the size.
My issue with the Tamron is sample variation…I keep hearing people who had multiple soft copies. Even the people with decent copies have said they’re not up to Nikkor quality.
Exactly, it is only weak at 24mm. In all the other FL it is nearly impossible to impossible to tell the difference with the 120S. It is a bit annoying how some people are supporting the ultra meta picking of lenses... Like if making good photography was about having the most sharp lens ever!
@@Aphorism89 good photography is about have affordable lens. nikon has done a great job top to bottom. as a canon guy, i hate the canon pricing. z mount proprietary is great compared to canon.
Still best for photography, only physical upgrades matter. I am using Nikon z6, it has bad subject tracking than your camera. But I like it for my family photography. 😊😊
I chose the 14-24mm f/2.8 over the 14-30mm f/4 because I wanted to have it for astro as well. It is much lighter than you'd expect and a joy to shoot with. It is more limited in focal length which means changing lenses if I want to go above 24. Happy with that choice. I chose the 100-400mm over the 70-200mm f/2.8 as I get more range if slightly less optical quality. Still happy with my choice on that. I bought the 24-200mm before the 24-120mm was out. I'd have chosen the 24-120mm if that option had been available at the time. I also have a 35mm f/1.8 prime and I love it.
As an amateur and someone who doesn't like zooms. I highly recommend the 28mm 2.8 and 40mm 2.8 for casual/family/street/travel photography. Although these types of lenses aren't really exclusive to Nikon, I think they were designed for people like me. They're part of the reason I currently use a Nikon camera.
I really have to say, the 50mm 1.8 S is OUTSTANDING. It produces such characterful and sharp images I honestly love shooting it all the time. I would highly recomend anyone that is getting into the Z mount to pick up one.
Nikon's 50mm lenses especially are just amazing for focus stacking of product & scale models in studio because they don't focus breathe, be it the 1.2S or 1.8S. You won't get too much ghosting that requires manual editing because each individual frame align very well in the stacking process. These lenses were exactly the reason why I bought into the Z mount. RF and E mount lenses don't exactly meet my requirements in this regard.
@@romanpul The 50MC is okay, but more suitable for APSC in my opinion, working distance is short if you are photographing something small. And I didnt like the extending barrel design. I do have the 105 MC and it is seriously good. I use it for videos more, or single shot product photos.
Excellent points, @EXkurogane! I too, use the NIkkor Z 50 f/1.8 S for focus stacking small products with the Z8, and obtain good results after stacking/merging 10-50 images. However, I find that the IRIX 150 f/2.8 Macro lens does an even better job in terms of image detail rendition, likely because it is optimized for close focusing. Of course, the IRIX is MF only, but the deep focus throw allows for ultra-precise focusing.
I'm with you 100%. The 24-120 is fantastic for everything including macro photography. I take photos at a step back distance with the 120mm and with the Z7 sensor cropped in. Everything is in focus without focus stacking and it looks like macro photography, because I was farther away. An incredible lens and still a fantastic sensor. I use the 14-30 all the time as well.
A couple years ago I bought the Z5 on sale for $999 and paired it with the 24-120, which was also on sale for $899 at the time. I use that combo for 90% of my shots and no complaints. Also if you’re willing to go Viltrox, they currently have the widest ultra wide prime on Z mount with the 16mm f/1.8.
Can you share some thoughts on why you put those lenses on those cameras (versus the opposite)? I have a Z8 and Z6ii, and 24-70/2.8 and 85/1.2, and haven't settled on which lens I want on which camera.
My only Z-Mount lens is the 40mm f/2 SE on the Nikon ZF. Fortunately there is the megadap etz Adapter, so I also have my nice Sony glass, I can still use on the Nikon. 😊
@@Joelsfilmer Considering you are quite uninformed that there is the 14-30 f4, 14-24 f2.8 which are top tier optics especially the f2.8 where a normal 16mm will still come in at f3.5, f2.8 or f2 at best anyways. PLUS you forget that there are TONS of choices for excellent wides zooms AND primes Nikon made in the last five decades including 10 and 8 mm fisheyes in the nikkor F mount that work seamlessly and inexpensively with the FTZ that came with the Z cameras.
I think they were probably trying to stick with "official" Z lenses (like ones that are either made by Nikon, or authorized to be made by Nikon, hence the Tamron). There are also a lot of third party options out there so probably too many to list so they narrowed the scope to authorized lenses.
Nikon Z-Mount is the only mount on the market where you can adapt nearly every lens on the market. From Sony E-Mount lenses to Canon EF-Mount lenses, old F-Mount lenses, Leica, Pentax, FUJI there is an adapter for it. I believe even Canon RF-Mount would be possible.
@@LukaszFrankowskithere aren’t any adapters for RF to Nikon Z yet but it should technically be possible as the Nikon Z mounts flange distance is shorter. So why wouldn’t an RF adapter be possible as well?
my line: 24-120 f4 my default walk around lens, 70-200 f2.8 for events (marathon, dance, etc.), 85 f1.8 for static portraits, laowa 100mm f2.8 for macro.
In my opinion, the best lenses are the 24-120mm f/4, 24-200mm f/4-6.3, and 28-400mm f/4-8. I am tired of bokeh, corner sharpness, or pristine noiseless images. I'd rather have the lens to capture the decisive moment and not caught off guard changing lenses. I only use prime lenses on the second body.
Had a bit of luck the other week, picked up a brand new 14-24mm f2.8 for less than £1000. There must of been a glitch in the matrix 😅. I popped in the cart and paid and thought the vendors would spot it especially when they had no stock. No! Unbelievably it arrived 4 days later… one happy bunny here.
I bought the Z6ii to see what mirrorless would be like. It came with anF4 24-70. I was not expecting the lens to be as great as it is. The Z mount range is a great reason for me to stick with Nikon. I have also changed my mind on something I never expected to and bought a variable aperture zoom for birding. The 180-600 is great value for money.
Though Nikon was a bit slow ‘out of the gate’ with mirrorless, they’ve not only catched up with the rest, but are now class leading in almost all categories. As a semi-retired fashion/beauty photographer, I’ve left the days of bags of cameras and lenses behind me and I’m happily enjoying the pleasure of compact Q and M cameras. But if I would ever need to go shopping for a DSLM system again, it would be Z-mount.
Question . Given Lightroom has introduced blur into its arsenal . Is it possible to recreate the 1.2 f look without paying the price? I purchased the z50 1.2 f . It’s not just blur pretty is give a rendition of excellent quality ,it brings clarity to an image. I have the Samyang 135 latest version. The colour capture on my z 8 brings a completely unique and pleasing image. That said the adapter for the Sony to z mount has been a problem . Soft wear updates are a risky. So the alternative to the z135 when considering the price between the two lenses I would not recommend buying the Samyang because of the converter problem I faced . I have the z 85 f 1.8 and it’s good sharper at certain f stops than the 1.2f . Really depends on the look you want . Please note so many people coming into photography concentrate on their equipment. The image quality is of course a factor .The mistake they make is that the pro equipment is what makes their photos great. The truth is far from that. You can take a horse to water but you can’t make it drink. I enjoy your channel . Thanks hope my little explanation is worth the read . I have purchased 3 adapters so buyer be ware . The cost of the three adapters brings it into reach of the Nikon 135 z
The best lens for Z mount is the 24-120mm. Second place is the 50/1.8 S. A gem of a lens imo. Third place - 14-30mm. And for portraits, if 85/1.8 S is not enough (for me it is, another great lens), I would rather go for the F-mount 105/1.4, than the new 135/1.8, because of price and 135 being too tight.
@@bucketsofglory I've definitely been leaning at it. Probably going to sell my Olympus E-M1X and a couple lenses to get it. These days I've been leaning towards going full Nikon.
As a Nikon Z mount user, I have to say this is the most informative and useful recommendation Ive seen and heard! You are spot on! As for me, I want the 70-200, and the 135 Plena! Thanks for the excellent information! I really appreciate you guys!❤
I love the 50mm f1.8 Z lens. It's a phenomenal lens and the extra cost for it is well worth it. The 85mm f1.8 does a great job as a portrait lens, image quality is outstanding. I love the Tamron 35-150mm f2-2.8 as an all around lens for both photos or video with the large aperture. The other great lens that is light and very versatile is the 24-120mm f4. Great job Nikon on these lenses.
Worth noting that the Nikkor 14-24 2.8 112mm filter hood can be fitted to the 24-70 and 70-200 2.8 lenses as well, so you can use the same filters if you invest in 112mm filters. Alternative is to use rear filters in it. Bit more fiddly.
I'd say don't forget the 17-28 2.8, it covers astro and you can use the 28mm end for great video work. Don't forget Hollywood for the most part uses 28mm.
Litterly posted a poll debating which lens would be better on a z8 24-120 f4 or 35-150 f2-2.8 and I see this video pop up this morning. I was so excited to see what you guys picked , and basically you guys picked both. Thanks lol
Hahahaha You can’t go wrong with either! I have 35-150/2-2.8 and is my favorite lens ever! And I’ve had plenty of Canon L, Nikon pro and Sony lenses! It’s a beast of a lens and pretty heavy, so I would get 24-120/4 for walk around and 35-150 for portraits and low light events …
As a portrait shooter I have some lenses some lenses in this list and I can tell you they are all fantastic lenses. The 50,85 1.2 primes and the 24-70 2.8s and 70-200 2.8 S zooms. Nikon has done great job here.Butbwhat I found fascinating is that I prefer the tamron 35-150 and viltrox 16mm to my 24-70 and 70-200 combo. Right now I shoot events with the tamron.
Mine is the Tamron 28-75 f2.8 - The autofocus is incredibly fast, the lens is small and lightweight, as well as perfect for my needs. ( Photojournalism )
Hi Chris, I love your videos and have followed you and Jordan for a few years. Thank you for all the reviews you do. I recently sold my D5500 and D7200 with all the f mount lenses to upgrade to the Z50 and Z6ii bodies. Z50 for travel is awesome. I chose the Tamron Nikon branded Z trio for the Z6ii because of the f2.8 affordable pricing and added a 1.4xTC for the 70-180 f2.8. I then added the 24-120 f4S lens after seeing the reviews and I agree with you, it’s the best walk around lens due to the extra reach and image quality. But then I saw the Z180-600 and that is a must for any armature for wildlife and will also works great with the 1.4xTC. With this setup I can pack the trio plus TC in my compact camera backpack with the 24-120 mounted on the body and bring along the 180-600 in the Ape Case I purchased for it. Only 2 bags with a tripod and I’m covered. Thanks again and keep those videos coming. Dave Drake Coldstream BC
If I had Nikon Z mount and wanted the best Lenses, then I would go for Voigtländer APO-Lanthar 35mm 2.0, Voigtländer Nokton 50mm 1.0, Voigtländer Macro APO-Lanthar 65mm 2.0, Voigtländer Nokton 75mm 1.5, Nikon Z 400mm 4.5 and Nikon Z 800mm 6.3 (or Nikon 600mm 6.3).
Of my 11 Z lenses, the 24-120mm is my favorite, so impressed with its IQ. I typically leave the 24-70mm 2.8 & 70-200mm 2.8 at home. Leaving for an Alaskan trip and will take the 14-30mm, 24-120mm and 180-600mm with my 1.4 tele. And one of my primes, either the 20mm, 35mm or 50mm 1.8. Not sure?
For wildlife primes I've found I really like the 400 f4.5 + 1.4 tc. It gets you to 560mm f6.3 which is very close to the Nikkor 600 f6.3 at about a $700 discount with the additional benefit of enjoying 2 different focal lengths.
You are right with every lens you mention but to me it‘s a typical choice from RUclipsrs like you who have unlimited access to all these expensive lenses without buying them. There are lots of people out there who can afford the 24-70 f/4 (which you mentioned) and one prime lens. And my recommendation is always the 40mm f/2 and the 28m f/2.8. Both are not the sharpest lenses in the world but they have a certain look, they are light weight and don’t cost a fortune. I use them often on my Z8. It‘s a great combo for street photography.
The 14-24 mm f/2.8 Z-Mount takes also filters at the rear of the lens which are a lot smaller and less expensive. Don't know why it didn't get mentioned.
Z24-200 is better than the Z24-120S when you consider the price difference. stops are fine for general and landscape, you rarely go below F5ish anyway. And the extra range is extremely handy on a general purpose. Sure, you have a bit less sharpness (it´s only really noticeable at 24mm... but considering the extra range and price difference, for non professional use, the 200 is far better.
I shoot with the Z14-24mm f/2.8 S, Z 24-70mm f/2.8 S, Z 70-200mm F/2.8 S, and Z100-400mm f/4.5-5.6 S. If I need to go beyond 400mm, I use the Z TC1.4, which I cannot see any loss in sharpeness at 560mm. I use the lenses on both a Z7II and Z8, which are excellent camera bodies.
I agree with this list! Somehow I lost my Z 50mm 1.8 so I just ordered the Z 50mm 1.4. Not an S lens but I absolutely LOVE it! Nice close focus distance, super light and bright. Probably my current fave to have close by for when my cats do something cute!!
It was maybe the third or 4th lens I got for the z6ii. Quickly rocketed up as my favorite. Combine it with a black mist pro filter if you need some softness for portraits
What? No 35mm!? In an ultra-wide I understand the Viltrox 16mm F/1.8 is very good for astro. I just tested the 20mm Nikkor and it is excellent for astro.
My favourite current Z lens is my 24-120 f4, this is hardly off my Z6III (and my Z6II)...I've been eyeing that 20mm 1.8. I agree...I really wish there were Sigma ART Z lenses.
I would take a Z8 with 24-120 f/4 if I would have to pick only one body and lens. I mean the Z8 is just sooo sweet and 24-120 is really great and able to do good close up also. But in general, Nikon did a great job 💪
No 35mm? I know Chris hates them but it's still a popular focal length. It would be nice to know what you think of the new Z35mm 1.4 and how it fit's in the Z mount current lineup.
24-120 f/4 is pretty much the reason I upgraded to the Z-mount - sharp, light n compact, reasonably bright and far superior to its F-mount counter part. Has ~0.4x magnification at the long end to boot. I only wish Nikon someday will make something like a 20-120 f/4 with similar optical quality!
I use the z 24-70 2,8 S and Z 70-200 2,8 S and think that they are the lenses I need. Of course would a Z 14-24 2,8 made my day some times. But that being said, NPS helps me with lending lenses I need for specific work so I don’t have to buy them 😊
Just spent 3 months in Africa doing wildlife photography and the 100-400 was pretty much permanently on my camera. It's a great lens especially with the high megapixel sensors which you can crop a fair bit and still have a usable image.
I am currently enjoying using the Nikon 85mm F1.8 F Mount for my street photography. I have been using it more than i thought I would for street photography.
I picked up a 24-120mm f/4 and my oh my it's beautiful. I always have it on my camera and walk with my 85mm f/1.8 f-mount and ftz adoptor. I will eventually get both the 85mm f/1.2 and the 135mm f/1.8.
Great commentary on the superb Nikon Z System lenses, Chris! I agree with the majority of your assessments, except that I find the 14-30 f/4 to be better for my landscape work, being IMHO, 99% as sharp as the 14-24 f/2.8. Plus, when retracted with hood reversed, it fits "lens down" in my Shimoda 30L Explore backpack mounted on a Z7, something the 14-24 wound not do..
I still hope to get a 15-35 lens that takes filters. With the 24 I do not have enough range and it does not take polarizing filters with usual 100mm systems and the 14-30 is only f/4. Somehow it is always a compromise. The UWA lenses by Canon are the only thing I miss these days shooting Nikon again. But therefore I get the 180-600 and the 24-120 as well, awesome lenses.
The 50mm 1.8 is a fantastic prime lens at any price. I stuck with Nikon and bought all the cameras up to the Z8 and Zf. It is a great system with terrific lenses. Great discussion on the Z lenses.
20mm has an insane amount of purple and green fringing. Massive. Agreed that the 24-120 f4 is excellent. Much prefer the look of the 50 f1.2 over the 1.8. Much better rendition.
I bought a 20mm for my D810. I think I’ve used it once in the last 7 years. Won’t be getting a 20mm next time. 24 is the better wide landscape lens for general use. When I get a Z8 I will start off with the 24-120. Then maybe the 400 f4 and the 1.4 Teleconverter.
Number 1 --> Nikkor Z 26mm f/2.8 (always with me) Number 2 --> Nikkor Z MC 105mm f/2.8 S (always with me) Number 3 --> Nikkor Z 50mm f/1.4 (I use it inside and for video) Number 4 --> Nikkor Z 180-600mm f/5.6-6.3 (heavy but good, i don't use often) Number 5 --> Laowa 10mm Z AF f/2.8 (if I take it, it offers new points of view)
The 24-120 f4 has been my favourite lens I've used/owned across 8 years and 3 systems, aside from the Voigtländer 40mm f1.2 which is a very different type of lens. It's just that great. I really wish Nikon had more low profile, pancake-adjacent lenses since that's what had me leaving the system again. Fuji and MFT just offer more choice in terms of size and form factor.
To be honest when it comes to Nikon as a whole i am looking for the Nikon 105 F1.4 or Nikon 105 F1.8 F Mount. I currently own the Nikon 50mm F1.4 and Nikon 85 F1.8 for my Nikon D5500 I intend to purchase the Nikon D5600 and Nikon D750 and Nikon D780. But i must admit i am looking forward to seeing what Nikon does with the future Nikon Z5 Mark 2
I (very) recently completed my (flight) travel combo with the 14-30mm/f4 and the 28-400mm/f4-8. I liked the 24-70mm/f4 but compared to the 24-120mm/f4 it's missing some range for an 'always on' lense. So I switched to this for hiking and similar situations. I'm missing a few of the 3rd party goodies like the Viltrox 16mm/f1.8. It was said that APS/C is out of scope but the 13mm/f1.4 was one of my choices for the Z50 too.
I have the 400/4.5 S telephoto prime which I pair with my Z8 body for sports and wildlife. I'm quite happy to use my DX function button for more reach with this lens. I can't justify going the 600 f/6.3 VR S lens. The 600mm minimum focus length is too long for many use cases and my preference is a wider aperture for lower light backgrounds. My second camera is the Zf which I use with my 24 -120/4.5 S lens. I think the 85mm down to 20mm f /1.8 S prime lenses are close to being best in class for most practical use photography use cases. I'm also considering purchasing the more affordable Viltrox 16mm f/1.8 lens.
I am pleased Nikon introduced both the Nikon Z 24-120 F4 lens and the Nikon Z 28-400 lens to the Nikon Z line up. They would be great for versatile zoom length travel photography
When I came over to the Nikon side this year I got the 24-120mm and 180-600mm to start off as I mostly shoot outdoor. The 24-1200mm I can tell is going to be my fav so far. Now I want something that can bring in more light. I am very much thinking the 14-24mm 2.8f will be my next lens.
The Z mount range is pretty incredible for lenses, but to be completely honest, I do find them hella expensive. Right now my only two Z mout lenses that I use are the 28mm f/2.8 anf the 40mm f/2. They are both cheap, excellent, small and lightweight. Everything else, well I just use F mount lenses with the FTZ II adapter on my good old' Z6. Works like a charm, I don't see a perforamnce difference with my DSLRs and the image quality is still excellent from those lense son a 24MP sensor. I don't know how they would fare with higher res cameras, or much faster focusing cameras, but one thing for sure is that I won't be buying any of those for at least a few years, so I'm goo there ! Lenses like the 50mm f/1.8G and the 85mm f/1.8G on F mount work so tremendously well on the Z6, and the image quality is still excellent (especially when it comes to the 85mm). That's one of the huge advantages of the Z mount in my opinion : excellent Z mount glass, and then adapter for tons of mounts, including F mount and E mount (!)
If the new 35 mm f/1.4 for example is still expensive for you then you are probably looking for budget lenses which costs no more than 300 €. The outstanding lenses were never really inexpensive even during the F-Mount days. Now you can buy used.
@@jorgepinogarciadelasbayonas yup, that pretty much describes my lens lineup : - Z 28mm - 170€ used - Z 40mm - 200€ used - F 50mm - 130€ - F 85mm - 200€ Only lens that costs more than 300€ in my lineup is my Sigma 100-400 Contemporary which I bought for 450€.
Funny you mentioned the 50 and 85mm f /1.8 G F mount - I never liked them much even on my super old D610. Also on the Z7, my 24-70mm f/2.8G non-VR (now sold) looks like junk in the corners when shooting landscapes and I wasn't even trying to find faults 😹 Now I'm using only the 24mm and 50mm /f1.8 S, can't afford to get a telephoto yet, absolutely nothing to complain about. Costs wise Z lenses aren't expensive but hard to find used examples where I live - too many Canon and Sony users who only trust other people's words instead of looking into the systems on their own. I broke that D610 and obviously could have switched systems but still stayed with Nikon: - Canon RF lenses are either cheap junks or super expensive - a carryover from DSLR days (don't like the ubiquitious 24-105m L, not my focal range) - I never liked any Sony bodies, night and day difference compared to even first gen Z6/Z7. Lenses are hit-and-miss - Switching to Fujifilm would cost the same or slightly more than Nikon Z and I'm stuck with crop frame, also not into dials much.
Great video! Nikon has done an amazing job in creating a versatile and very high quality lens line-this is why I end up suggesting the Nikon line to friends even though I'm a strong Fuji supporter and user (I was a Nikon guy back in the film days). Who knows, maybe I will switch back at some point, if they ever decide to re-release a retro S series style rangefinder. But I won't hold my breath.
@@jorgepinogarciadelasbayonas true, I’m hoping for something along the lines of the Fuji X-Pro 3 or the X-100 in style and function. I’d bet my last horse that it would be a huge seller.
Thank you! Starting out fresh with a new mirrorless and am always keen to hear recommendations, although I will note that you missed macro lenses! Can we do a roundup? Macro is very much my jam, and as far as I can tell there aren't many for Nikon Z, but maybe you guys are more knowledgeable?
What would be the best z mount lens for stills, indoor, low light, no tripod? I shoot a lot of upclose stills inside places where I'm not allowed to bring a tripod and I'm having a hard time figuring out which lens would be the best. The 85mm prime doesn't quite get me close enough to my subject, but the price is great for the F/1.8 so that is the one I'm considering at the moment. The Plena might be better, but it breaks my budget right now. Any other suggestions?

And yes, we are aware the Plena costs more than $2 (unfortunately).
@@PetaPixel haha if you have one for $2, then dreams really do come true
@@PetaPixel i wont mind buying your plena for 2 dollars
Nikon need to start making hybrid lenses. 1.4S line primes hybrid zooms like canon with PZ adapter
Just $2 for the Plena ??? Now that's a steal that beats the 35mm f/1.4 Z !
7:50 a bargain!
Please provide a link for the $2 135mm Plena. 😅
And the.noct is 4.4 pounds.
In weight, not sterling.
I’ll spring for that Plena and I don’t even have a Nikon.
That's $2 Canadian, or US $2,496.95 at current exchange rates.
for all the budget conscious Z shooters, 40MM F2 is an incredible value as it is a balance between 35 and 50mm.
Not only because of budget. These lenses are tiny. For me that’s their selling point!
@@HeikoBertram Yes, Nikon could do more pancakes such as the 26 mm f/2.8. I always liked the appearance of Pentax Limited pancakes.
Anything small and light is better (doesn’t have to be cheap) makes you forget about the camera and makes you take better photos
When I had two lenses, I sometimes had the wrong lens on the camera. Now that I have a dozen lenses, I ALWAYS have the wrong lens on the camera.
You need to focus on photo projects. For example one day you do only animals, the next day you do only macro, the next day only portraits, ...but if you don't know what to photograph this can happen.
Manage your expectations! 😂
If you think your lenses cover everything, but the right one is not mounted, then that’s the feeling.
For events I take two bodies with one covering wide and one covering long. Two f/2.8 zooms!
That covers 95% of everything.
sarcasm missed.....
😂
So you need a dozen cameras too 😊
Jordan's kit: $11025
Chris' kit: $14125
P.S. that Plena is really affordable, didn't expect that quality for just $2
It's all relative, their kind of salary they are probably pulling, even Leica lenses are probably bargain bin price for them.
@@aaronmoore3050 you didn't get the joke
You make a best Z-mount lenses list without including the Z105/2.8 macro?! It's an absolutely FANTASTIC lens. It's super sharp edge-to-edge already wide open, has incredible contrast and a beautiful bokeh. I'd even say it's probably the best macro lens ever made. It's also very versatile and excellent for several other types of photography.
Mine has focusing issues when using it for portraits. I have the 85mm 1.2 and the Plena as well so it really only gets used for macro.
Maybe it's because Nikon is refreshing that 105mm macro.
Agree, LOVE that lens. Its stunning.
I agree. That might be my next lens
@@eberry023macros are inherently slow focusing. They can be used for portraits but primarily designed for macro.
Don't forget the incredible 105 macro lens!
He definitely forgot 😢
Came here to say this. Might be more of a niche prime for some folks, but it’s an incredible portrait lens in a similar range as the 135mm Plena. If you are in fact a macro photographer, I think it’s the best lens for that on any system. It’s so sharp and beautiful - my Z5 is actually the thing holding back my photos with it!
Seriously? It's so insanely good. It's big. But it's also light, and it does two things very very very well: macro and portrait. Definitely among the best on the system.
Yeah, disappointed they forgot the whole macro category.
I use mine for everything. Even if I shouldn't, I figure out how to fit that guy into a square hole.
@@AbbeyRoadDuluth good to hear. Besides the wait, any downfalls in terms of performance? sharpness, bokeh, focus speed and accuracy? Thanks again
My issue with the Tamron is sample variation…I keep hearing people who had multiple soft copies. Even the people with decent copies have said they’re not up to Nikkor quality.
We are so spoiled. ALL the Z lenses are good. The 24-200 matches some of the F mount primes at some focal lengths.
I have a sony a6000 and can't afford an upgrade, and yet I keep watching all these review videos.
You are not alone, my guy. Keep dreaming though, wish you well!
The Sony A6000 is still a very good Camera ! For Sony there are hundreds of options of Lenses to choose from.
Maybe consider the Viltrox 27mm and 75mm lenses, they work well with the Sony a6000.
Still best for photography, only physical upgrades matter. I am using Nikon z6, it has bad subject tracking than your camera. But I like it for my family photography. 😊😊
Hear that 😅
I chose the 14-24mm f/2.8 over the 14-30mm f/4 because I wanted to have it for astro as well.
Why not mentioning the 70-180 mm f/2.8 which is lighter, more compact and less expensive?
I just received the Viltrox 16mm f1.8 full frame z-mount lens and so far I am very happy with it, especially since it was under $500 USD on sale.
7:48 Where can I get that $2 Plena
Hahaha was just about to comment this
The Plena is $2, but the shipping and handling is outrageous.
Legendary lens
Agreed. Punches way above its price tag!
Though they forgot to mention the 50mm f2.8 MC
@@romanpul The 50MC is okay, but more suitable for APSC in my opinion, working distance is short if you are photographing something small. And I didnt like the extending barrel design.
I do have the 105 MC and it is seriously good. I use it for videos more, or single shot product photos.
@@EXkurogane Yeah, I’m also not a huge fan of that lens. I just thought it might have been worth pointing out
Excellent points, @EXkurogane!
Now I know why I don't see the Plena in every camera shop where I live. It's so affordable that it is always out of stock.
😂
A couple years ago I bought the Z5 on sale for $999 and paired it with the 24-120, which was also on sale for $899 at the time. I use that combo for 90% of my shots and no complaints.
Also if you’re willing to go Viltrox, they currently have the widest ultra wide prime on Z mount with the 16mm f/1.8.
Don’t know whether it was out three months ago when you posted this, but there’s now a 10mm 2.8 from Laowa for Nikon.
As a wedding photographer on the z8 I have my 24-70 2.8 and on my z6 I have the 85mm 1.8 it covers everyhting I need and great quality
I’d still recommend the Tamron 35-150/2-2.8!!
Then you can be good with a 20/1.8 and 35-150!
20mm to 150mm covered!!
More coverage than 24-85🤷♂️
Can you share some thoughts on why you put those lenses on those cameras (versus the opposite)? I have a Z8 and Z6ii, and 24-70/2.8 and 85/1.2, and haven't settled on which lens I want on which camera.
My only Z-Mount lens is the 40mm f/2 SE on the Nikon ZF.
Fortunately there is the megadap etz Adapter, so I also have my nice Sony glass, I can still use on the Nikon. 😊
The only drawback is if the adapted lens has noticeable distortion and other optical shortcomings, because LR and the camera won’t correct it!
I use 35-150 Tamron E mount on Nikon Z and it works flawlessly! ❤️
The Viltrox 16/1.8 should probably be mentioned in the ultrawide category. It's pretty decent.
This is a "Best" lens presentation, not a "pretty decent" category in which many lenses will qualify.
@@artsilva Considering the fact that Nikon doesn't offer anything wider than 20 themselves, I think an above average 16 mm deserves a mention.
@@artsilva There are no native Z-mount Nikon primes wider than 20mm and brighter than 2.8. I'll leave it at that.
Adapting is not an option at all.
I have a 100 year old Leitz-Elmar 35mm f3.5 on mine, lovely match.
@@severgunif the experience is like having a native lens then why wouldn’t it be an option?
Everything but RF mount unfortunately
I hear you and I like it.
Had a bit of luck the other week, picked up a brand new 14-24mm f2.8 for less than £1000. There must of been a glitch in the matrix 😅. I popped in the cart and paid and thought the vendors would spot it especially when they had no stock. No! Unbelievably it arrived 4 days later… one happy bunny here.
i used Z5 and 24-200, and now i waiting 180-600! Loved!
I have the 105mm f/1.4, with the FTZ it works wonders on the Z6II for portraits.
Jordans pick for the tamron 35-150 is the one lens I feel like I need.
I use it 90%+ with a z8. It does everything well.
@@bucketsofglory I've definitely been leaning at it. Probably going to sell my Olympus E-M1X and a couple lenses to get it. These days I've been leaning towards going full Nikon.
Waiting patiently for a sale or price drop!
That 24-120 just lives on my z8 especially because the z8 is really good at lowlight by itself.
Or the NiSi filter adapter for filter plates.
Thanks lol
Hahahaha
You can’t go wrong with either!

Not sure?
Great choices! Heads up, you have a few mislabeled title cards in this one. I spotted a 12-24 typo, and of course the 2 dollar Plena.
My favorites for long primes on my Z9 are still the F mount 300 2.8 VRII, and 500 f/4E.
For wildlife primes I've found I really like the 400 f4.5 + 1.4 tc. It gets you to 560mm f6.3 which is very close to the Nikkor 600 f6.3 at about a $700 discount with the additional benefit of enjoying 2 different focal lengths.
Cracking vid - you displayed the 400mm 4.5 VR S for the picture of the 600mm tho! Cheers guys
I have the 400mm f/4.5 and love it, especially with the 1.4x and 2x teleconverters when I need it.
Add to that the Nikon Z 105mm as the best macro lens. Not cheap - but really, really good.
It was maybe the third or 4th lens I got for the z6ii. Quickly rocketed up as my favorite. Combine it with a black mist pro filter if you need some softness for portraits
I loved the old G lens on my D750, this was the first one I choose to go along with the Z6 III
What? No 35mm!? In an ultra-wide I understand the Viltrox 16mm F/1.8 is very good for astro. I just tested the 20mm Nikkor and it is excellent for astro.
I shoot Viltrox primes on my Z5. It has been 👌
My favourite current Z lens is my 24-120 f4, this is hardly off my Z6III (and my Z6II)...I've been eyeing that 20mm 1.8.
I agree...I really wish there were Sigma ART Z lenses.
I really want those mid range 1.4 and 1.8 lenses on canon. Sony and nikons lens lineup just makes way more sense.
I'm pleasingly surprised by the pancake NIKKOR Z 26mm f/2.8. Such a great walk around lens!
I use the z 24-70 2,8 S and Z 70-200 2,8 S and think that they are the lenses I need. Of course would a Z 14-24 2,8 made my day some times. But that being said, NPS helps me with lending lenses I need for specific work so I don’t have to buy them 😊
I encourage everybody to look into the 24-200 f4-6.3 lens. I've been using it for a couple weeks and it rarely leaves the camera body. Affordable too
Just spent 3 months in Africa doing wildlife photography and the 100-400 was pretty much permanently on my camera. It's a great lens especially with the high megapixel sensors which you can crop a fair bit and still have a usable image.
Thanks for this great video. What are your toughts about the 100-400 lens ?
I am currently enjoying using the Nikon 85mm F1.8 F Mount for my street photography. I have been using it more than i thought I would for street photography.
Third party lenses from Voigtlander, Thypoch, Viltrox and TT Artisans are awesome as well.
Number 1 --> Nikkor Z 26mm f/2.8 (always with me)
Number 2 --> Nikkor Z MC 105mm f/2.8 S (always with me)
Number 3 --> Nikkor Z 50mm f/1.4 (I use it inside and for video)
Number 4 --> Nikkor Z 180-600mm f/5.6-6.3 (heavy but good, i don't use often)
Number 5 --> Laowa 10mm Z AF f/2.8 (if I take it, it offers new points of view)
My wallet doesn't like your choices.
Any chance of a comparative video with Nikon Z6iii, Zf and it's Sony and Canon equivalents?
Enjoyed, but why not mention the micro lenes?
Nothing beats that 58mm Noct. I was floored when I saw the MTF charts for something that wide.
The 24-120 almost never comes off my camera and yes the sun star is exquisite.
As long as you don‘t care about the usual Nikon-amount of LoCa… Not as bad as the 85/1.4 G but bad enough to not buy it.😅
Is there anything wrong with Nikon lens, very good lenses, unbelievable! Well done Nikon!
The Nikoon 70-200mm F2.8 VR S is 2295.00 at B&H, which is a steal.
If I wasn't heavily invested in Sony lenses, I would definitely go with the Nikon system.
It's never too late buddy. And you can keep your favorites and adapt them with no loss in performance
I've only read good things about the MEGADAP adapters
What about the new 35 mm f/1.4?
@@jorgepinogarciadelasbayonas yup, that pretty much describes my lens lineup :
- Z 28mm - 170€ used
- Z 40mm - 200€ used
- F 50mm - 130€
- F 85mm - 200€
Only lens that costs more than 300€ in my lineup is my Sigma 100-400 Contemporary which I bought for 450€.
I broke that D610 and obviously could have switched systems but still stayed with Nikon:
- Canon RF lenses are either cheap junks or super expensive - a carryover from DSLR days (don't like the ubiquitious 24-105m L, not my focal range)
- I never liked any Sony bodies, night and day difference compared to even first gen Z6/Z7. Lenses are hit-and-miss
- Switching to Fujifilm would cost the same or slightly more than Nikon Z and I'm stuck with crop frame, also not into dials much.
I wish I'd kept my 85mm G and used the FTZ. The 85 Z is great, but it was something about that 85 G lens!
Interesting video.....no 100-400mm? One of my favorites!
You get great retro-styled lenses from Voigtländer which offers native Z-Mount support.
Prime 85mm 1.8 the one I can afford right now and is my favorite for portrait and car photography!! 👌🏻👌🏻👌🏻👌🏻👌🏻
That 24-120 and the Z6 III almost make me want to jump ship from Sony.
Always torn between the 14-24 2.8 and the 20 1.8 for astrophotography.. Haven't purchased one yet.. Any recommendations?
