I have other S line Z lenses but for landscapes , cityscapes, and general purpose where there is enough light it's my favourite ,good for macro too (it focus about 6 inches from the lens at 120mm)love it! very glad Nikon brought this out.
I totally agree on most of your thoughts on this lens. The one I take exception to is that you consider it expensive. If you look at camera and lens prices in the 1970's to current prices and factor in Inflation camera gear today is a bit of a bargain in terms of earning power versus price. Back in 1973 my very first Nikon was an F2 body with a meterless prism viewfinder cost 425.00 US dollars. Factor in Inflation and a 7.56 adjustment for Inflation and it was basically the cost of the Z8. As for the better lenses, those prices were distinctly high. Basically at today's price for the 24-120 in 1970 dollars it would be selling at a price equivalent for the least expensive 50mm lens Nikon offered, the 50mm f2. IMO the 24-120 is the best bargain going in the Nikon lens lineup and may be the best bargain of all Nikon's Camera offerings. However the Fx Refurb at just 1199.95 may match the bargain level of the 24-120.
I bought this lens and it's money well spent. Incredibly sharp detail, I've even used it for close up stuff with good results. Very versatile and I love it.
Great review of this lens. I am using a Z6III and Z8 (and a Zfc) and I was looking at either a Tamron 35-150mm f2-2.8 or this Nikkor S 24-120 f4. I have the 24-70 f2.8 but it's very heavy for travel and also a bit limited in range. I am now convinced to go for the Nikon 24-120mm. Thank you
I had one and sold it for the nikon version 28-75 f2.8. Nice lens but I found the 24-120 way more versatile so I just sold it and getting the 24-140f4 again since I found I dont need the extra stop of light and would prefer the extra wide and extra reach
@@k3n12ock I can see the appeal for the faster 28-75 however as you said the 24-120 is far more versatile. As a landscape photographer it’s better having one fast prime for astrophotography and then a general zoom lens.
Very Jealous! I'd love to try the 180-600. I use the 24mm 1.8 for my astro work but the 20mm seems to be that nice balance for milky way. Might need to be purchased!
Definitely it is on my wish list this lens. You mentioned that the body that was attached to was a 24 megapixel Z camera and that is impressive the resolving power of the lens if that is the case. I could see some very good details on my 15" inch laptop at its widest, Definitely I am inspired by how you where able to used it. I own a Z5 body and I am using the 24-200mm Z variable aperture lens at the moment which is quite good as well. I have used a 24-120 on my F mount Nikon bodies and was satisfied but the Z line lenses are a lot better. Thank you for the review with samples. Cheers.
This is my favorite zoom lens of all time. Funny, we all expected it to be a 24-105 and Nikon gives us 120 @ f/4 throughout the range. The control ring is a must-have for me, in fact I'd love to see all the 1.8 primes come out with v2's, and add a control ring to each one (instead of the current unreasonably large focus ring). Fn1 I tend to map to Switch Fx/Dx, especially handy when paired with a 45mp body. But YES I'd also love to see VR in this lens too. Great review 👍🏻
The control ring is a cool feature no doubt and something I wish I could utilise more! For video I do but for general landscapes im afraid not. I always accidentally twist it instead of the focus ring! Thanks for the comment
I really enjoyed the photo examples. Based on what I’ve been able to learn, the first edge of human vision (around peripheral) is a 24mm focal length on a 35mm sensor/film camera. More commonly I’ve seen people explain “normal” as being 35mm focal length for casual vision and 50mm for more focused attention from the human eye. Your examples in those ranges make me feel more like I’m there in the scene with you. Love that effect. Mointing your mic by your throat seems like it’d pick up more sound. But it’s also capturing the sound of you swallowing. Mounting more on the center of your chest would produce less of that noise and add some bass to the sound of your voice.
@@adamaufdencamp5080 thanks Adam. Appreciate your comment and feedback. I agree , 24mm is my favourite focal length for landscapes. Perfect balance of wide angle but also nice compression. Also agree about the mic position usually wouldn’t have it that close but on this occasion it slipped my mind. Thanks for the feedback!
Nice review Sean, I'm glad you included a night shot example too. I've often found myself wanting more from the 24-70. I'd seriously consider trading it in for the 24-120
Really enjoyed this type of video Sean , would you say a non vr Z series lens on a Z body would outperform a vr F mount lens on an older D series body ?
Oh that's a tough question man. I would say yes just because of image quality and how technology has advanced. If you don't have VR then you just need to shoot at a higher shutter to ensure the image is sharp when in turn might mean higher ISO. The latest mirrorless bodies are well equipped for high iso shooting
thanks for the review. I am waiting for black Friday sale in November which offers 15% discount. and I will definitely buy this lens, it will be grest for star trails as well.
I have heard great things about that lens and having the 200 reach would be nice! But probably not as sharp as the 24-120. if you don't find yourself needing more than 120, then it might be worth making the switch. But if you are using the 200 end a lot then stay put I think
You definitely should IMO. Significant improvement (and the 24-200 is quite good, for what it is). I ditched my 24-70 4, and 24-200 and consolidated into the 24-120.
I guess because more VR is always better. Also you would expect VR to be in the high end S range, so worth mentioning. Finally? It's a video about the lens..he's got to mention it, and he's hardly going to be praising there being no VR.

Agree all the way, Sean, had this since it came out and it is superb, if I didn't need to change lenses this would be Superglued on.
