How does the timeline work while editing in 4k in premiere pro?

Good video, thank you. I’m coming from a 2017 MacBook Pro and you’ve convinced me that 16GB is sufficient for my hobby photography needs. I keep all my photos on external SSDs but I’ll probably go for the 512GB storage just to make life easier in future with ever larger software. All I need now is to decide on a monitor. The Studio Display is so tempting but so expensive.

Great video! I was surprised by the production quality with such a new channel. The mini has been getting such stellar reviews. A real bargain. With the performance of Apple Silicon, I bet most people will get a good 5 years of use out of the machine. Probably longer. I used to work at a Mac repair shop and people were bringing in their 10-years old iMacs!

Danke shön! That was a very thorough review, specifically for photography (exactly what I was looking for!). You also answered a specific question - I have the original M1 Mac Mini with 16GB of RAM and 256GB HD. 90% of what I do runs fine, but stitching panos and 360s frequently runs out of memory. You confirmed to me that hasn't changed (I didn't think it would), so when I buy the M4 Mac Mini, I'll get it with extra RAM. Just not sure what the sweet spot is - RAM is particularly expensive on these. I'm subscribed now -- keep it up!

Most people - like me - will accept 3 minutes waiting times versus 1min30s. And games are not all AAA: for instance I play Civilization V that still runs smoothly on a 2015 MBP. So it's good to see a video that's talks about "normal" uses, instead of selling higher and higher specs for daily tasks just to gain 1 minute in a Lightroom export.

The base model of the Mac Mini feels like a bait-and-switch. Apple lures you in with an attractive price, but the reality is that the 256GB SSD isn't practical for most users. Unless your needs are limited to email and basic web browsing, you'll quickly hit storage limits, especially if you have an iPhone full of photos. Expanding storage externally means dealing with slower USB drives, and upgrading directly through Apple is exorbitant. For example, upgrading to just 512GB of storage (still barely enough for many) and adding 8GB of RAM costs nearly **double** the price of the base model. Charging $200 for adding 8GB of RAM is outrageous and typical of Apple. Even if you rely on iCloud to offset storage limitations, you're still locked into a costly monthly subscription (starting around $25/month), further inflating the total cost over time. In the end, the base price is just the tip of the iceberg-most users will pay far more than they initially intended.Not to mention you are putting all your data into someone else's hands and trusting them 100% not to lose it and to decide at any moment you violated some agreement and locking you out of your data. So either way you are paying way more than you intended and getting less than you expected for the price.

How about 3D modeling ??? Does anybody know how is behaving when running Sketchup on it ??? That's the very reason I'm thinking weather to buy one or not . I've looked everywhere for this answer but couldn't find any (so far)

You used a lot of outdated benchmarks that aren’t optimized for Apple silicon or some even deprecated like OpenCL GPU test in Geekbench. Cinebench r23 is an Intel benchmark that needs to be translated through Rosseta 2. Why not use Cinebench 2024, which is optimized for Apple silicon?

At 19:57 you say apps can't be installed on external SSDs ... but I believe you are incorrect. The Application folder can be moved to an external SSD. You can also install to the internal SSD and then move the applications to an external drive. I don't have my Mini yet (two more days), but I've been researching it a fair bit and found many sources showing how it works. You just need to be sure your SSD stays attached, or the app vanishes too. I went ahead and ordered a 2TB Gen 4x4 SSD with a Thunderbolt 40Gbps enclosure and installing apps to the external drive was my plan from day one. Hopefully everything I've read and watched wasn't wrong about that. From testing I've viewed, the base 256GB read/write runs around 2,500MB/s and may actually be slightly slower than an external SSD running at full speed. But those are still faster than most people are getting from whatever system they are coming from and won't feel the least bit sluggish for non-professional use, where you'd want the M4 Pro/Max/Ultra anyway.

@Davidson what would be equivalent of the base m4 mini on performance ladder compared to desktop pc (not mini)? For all but gaming. I am considering 7950x and 4090 or a base model mini and air. Eventually a Mac Studio m4. But wondering if the pc spec above would clearly be superior for non gaming workloads or if Mac is surprisingly close

New sub here. Great channel. Would you be so kind as to answer a few questions. I mostly use Final Cut Pro & Photoshop to create videos on my Billy Luna Crime Stories YT channel. I am working in 1080p, but plan to start working in 4k. Currently I am Using a Sandisk Extreme Pro SSD (2TB & 4TB) to edit off whilst using FCP. 1) For my needs, which exact configuration of the new M4 Mac Mini should I get? (Pro or no, RAM, SSD) 2) Can I get maximum speed via Thunderbolt 4 or 5 using a Sandisk Extreme Pro SSD? 3) Is there any speed or performance advantage in going with a 1 TB SSD vs 512? 4) I’m now leaning toward an M4 PRO MAC MINI 512 SSD & 64 GB - Is this overkill for running Final Cut Pro, Photoshop and 30 web browser tabs open at the same time? 5) Do I need to worry about fan noise when I’m recording on camera video or voice over? I would really like to save $ by not going with the pricey Apple storage & sticking with the externals. Thank you!

Can you define a filmmaker for me please? Is it a director, editor, cinemathographer, vfx artist or something else. This term is so broad that can be really misleading. Editing is technically the least hardware demanding job in all postproduction. So OK. What about colorists? You can hardly even begin to color grade a feature film on mac mini. A VFX artist doing heavy compositing with hundreds of cgi render passes? Don’t even think about it. Oh, silly me, by the term filmmaker you mean just youtubers editing their videos. OK.

Is Microsoft's Cloud Gaming (GamePass) well implemented on these Mac minis?

Is the Mac Mini M4 base worth getting if the RAM and Storage is upgraded to 24GB and 512GB, or is it purely the chip that will hold back its performance? Here in South Africa upgrading those 2 components is still a lot cheaper than the pro modal.

I do photo work and at times upscale video etc. From what others have said, the M4 Pro can have fans kick in fairly quick and can be audible. How was your experience? I know that the M4 Pro is more than enough power but consider the footprint of the new Mini may be the culprit for heat dispersion challenges. Your thoughts please?

Now Since Sequoia 15.1 Apps can be installed on external media when downloaded from the Mac App Store. Other apps can often still be moved to external media and run from it.

The power button placement is simple. Every time you power cycle the device, you have to physically pick it up and touch it. This is psychological and a form of pathological priming.
