This is one of the songs that kicked off the Disco era and that's KC & The Sunshine Band backing George up. KC also wrote this with his partner Rick Finch.

St.Barnabas High School had a street fair every summer and I remember this song played over a really good sound system while we rode the carnival rides with my friends! The scene of the boys at the carnival in the movie 'The Sandlot' takes me back there too. Great music and great memories!

"Rock the Boat" by The Hues Corporation and "Rock Your Baby" were the first disco hits to reach number 1 on the pop charts in July 1974. Some music historians say that "Rock the Boat" is the first disco number 1. This is the first time I've heard the extended version of "Rock Your Baby" in a long time. The record companies put extended versions of disco songs on 12 inch vinyl to keep the people on the dance floor longer! July 1974 was the summer before my last year in high school!

Hey Joey, thanks for the info on these two songs. Most people do not realize or respect the history and roots of disco music from the "Philly Soul Sound" in the early 70's. "Philly Soul" was born of one label, Philadelphia International Records, headed by the songwriting and production team of Kenneth Gamble and Leon Huff. In 1971 The O'Jays' breakthrough hit, "Back Stabbers." and the next single by the group, "Love Train," bore the Gamble and Huff stamp and defined the new genre. Disco was sweet pop-soul with a funky, but simple backbeat, bass drum in 4/4 time, laden with strings and horns and the occasional sitar-like guitar. Two other great songs that kicked in the disco era, "The Love I Lost," Harold Melvin and the Blue Notes and "T.S.O.P. (The Sound of Philadelphia)," MFSB.

Yeah, those extended versions of disco songs were called "disco versions" a lot of times back then. I was a kid and a teenager during this era and there used to be weekend night radio shows that would play all the long "disco versions" of songs that were the biggest that week in the clubs. We used to go crazy dancing to it - the Hustle, the Bump, the Bus Stop, all that.

    • @michaela8706

Yeah Joey, I was just watching this and the first thing I thought of was "Rock The Boat" by The Hues Corporation. Funny too, I heard the song on the radio in my car today. This was definitely the beginning of the Disco era. They should also do "T.S.O.P." (The Sound of Philadelphia) by MFSB (Mother, Father, Sister, Brother) from the same year as well. Oh, and "Love Train" by the O'Jays from 1972. MFSB also played on that as well.

Mike, without tellin my age. I remember the old (great) Wheel A While skating rink! For 3 years everyone skated to the latest jams! But when I hit 18! Loved it! The lights, sound system. The whole club vibe! Nothing like the clubs now. When Sister Sledge sang We are family, I've got all my sister's with me. It really felt like family. (Or that's the way I felt any way)
The 80's took a different turn. With the song "Meeting in the ladies room" by Klymaxx. There was so many what I call dance R&B groups that were great then drifted away. Atlantic Star, SOS band, Lisa Lisa and Cult Band, Midnight Star, Renee and Angela DeBarge. Just to name a few.

One of my favorites! I still have the 45. I used to joke to my boyfriend later who became my husband (rip)
When He always asked, how ya doin? (That was his fav expression.) When the song first came out it became one of my favs. So I would answer I don't feel good. His fav thing to ask? Is it that time again? Ha ha.
I'd start laughing and sing the chorus to Doctors orders. He'd just shake his head. He'd fall for it every time! ha ha This song will always be our quirky funny song!
It's a good sing along dance tune! I wish S&M would do a reaction to it!
Perhaps titled Early 70's Disco R&B? There's so many forgotten greats!

      K-TEL LP's or commercials? 🤔🤣☺️

He [George McCrae] was the pioneer of the disco music craze starting in 1974. Later in 1975 Van McCoy and his song "The Hustle" started the disco dance crazed. Their song and dance created a subculture and lifestyle that is still alive today. Both George McCrae and Van McCoy will go down in history as the founding fathers of disco music and dance.

Great song. Early disco, I suppose, but those vocals and that guitar are so smooth they kept the song in rotation throughout the seventies. I remember roller skating to this one in 1978 or thereabouts. Disco was such a big thing in the middle 1970's that the elementary school I went to taught us kids how to dance "The Hustle" on its annual carnival day. "The Hustle" was the dance that went with "The Hustle", an instrumental disco song by Van McCoy that went to number one in the summer of 1975 opening the door for more disco music, like the Saturday Night Fever soundtrack which dominated the charts two years later -- The Bee Gees "Stayin' Alive", KC and the Sunshine Band "Boogie Shoes", and The Trammps "Disco Inferno" are just a few hits from that album.

Hello, Being 67 I'd say technically Disco started Nov 1973 with Love Unlimited Orchestra - Love's Theme. Written by Barry White, it went to #1 on Billboard.
Now Rock the Boat and Rock me Baby went on to do the same in 1974.
But everyone really just danced they way they felt either apart or close.
Then one night at this Club that held 2000 people, the DJ put on a song by Van McCoy - The Hustle. Only one couple got on the floor and did the HUSTLE. I just watched and was amazed. A couple dancing together in sync like that. It was the real start of Disco. So that was 1975. Then all of a sudden another dance caught on called the BUMP(not the line dance). Anyone could do it and everybody wanted to do it. That was the sexiest dance in the world. Clothing styles changed too. I spent all my $ in Boutique stores buying rock star clothes. Satin and embroidered cowboy looking shirts, fancy platform shoes, pleated baggy bell bottom pants with cuffs and one piece zippered jumpsuits. Then everything went fuzzy for the rest of the decade. 😜

Benny Andersson and Björn Ulvaeus have cited George McCrae's ‘Rock Your Baby’ as a source of inspiration for the style of the song "Dancing Queen". "Rock your Baby" was a no.1 hit around the world, spending 10 weeks at no.1 in germany. George's wife, Gwen McCrae, recorded an answer song to "Rock Your Baby", released just less than a year later. "Rockin' Chair" reached number nine on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 in mid-1975. "Rockin' Chair' also reached number one R&B. George provided backing vocals on the song.

I stumbled upon this … realizing that this track is 50 years old. And it’s not too shabby whatsoever. It was a huge track back then (Top 10) late spring/early summer of 1974. I remember it well. Yes, it’s nice! 😉👍

The Year was 1975 and My beloved Mum and I went on holiday from London to Es Cana in Ibiza together and walked into a free music festival and played loud and clear, as we entered was Rock Your Baby by George McCrae and that image is still with me 46 years later...:)

This song was huge. My mum used to play it all the time when I was a kid and it was non-stop on the radio through the 70s until new wave and punk killed disco. I have it on my iPods and I’m pretty sure my mum has the vinyl somewhere.
In my head I always link this song to Gloria gaynor, Donna summer, and Roberta flack, plus the bee gees of course.

Yes this was early Disco, and fantastic stuff! You had artists like George McCrae, KC and the Sunshine Band, and Andrea True Connection "More more more" shaping the sound of disco into the eventual polished sound the Bee Gees epitomized.

Gwen McCrae (née Mosley, December 21, 1943) is an American singer, best known for her 1975 hit "Rockin' Chair".[1]
    1960s-1970s
Gwen was the youngest of five children,[1][3] She began performing in local clubs as a teenager, and singing with local groups like the Lafayettes and the Independents. In 1963, she met a young sailor named George McCrae, whom she married within a week.[1]
From 1963, she recorded as a duo with her husband George; the couple received a solo recording contract, with Henry Stone's TK Records.[1] The couple were discovered in 1967 by singer Betty Wright, who helped get them signed to Stone's Alston record label.[1]
Signed to TK subsidiary, Cat, as a solo artist, she found success on the U.S. R&B charts with her cover version of Bobby Bland's "Lead Me On" in 1970, followed by "For Your Love".[1] Following husband George's unexpected solo success with "Rock Your Baby", Gwen went on to have a major hit of her own in March 1975 with "Rockin' Chair", a #1 R&B hit which also reached number 9 in the United States' Billboard Hot 100. The follow-up "Love Insurance" also made the R&B chart (#16).[1] Music critic Robert Christgau said "Rockin' Chair" is "almost as irresistibly Memphis-cum-disco-with-a-hook as hubby's 'Rock Your Baby.'"[4]
In 1972, she recorded the song "Always on My Mind". The song was later popularized by Elvis Presley and Willie Nelson, then also covered by many artists.[5]
