      It was a great time to be young. Took it for granted!
      All this greatness. But, the truth is, that 70% of record sales are for compilations and boxed sets of classic rock. On VINYL.
      Even Wall Street is betting against it by buying the publishing rights from Warner, etc.
      Music should be a transcendent experience. It's not anymore.

    T-Rex were originally called Tyrannosaurus Rex and released 4 albums under that name but Marc Bolan the singer decided to shorten it. As others have said they were pioneers of Glam Rock having came through the psychedelic late 60's. Marc died in a car crash in 1977 and the band ended then. They have so many great song's from Ride a White Swan, 20th Century Boy, Children Of The Revolution, Metal Guru, Jeepster, I Love To Boogie and many many more.
    Oh and yes they were English.

  • @michaelgoldberg7127
    @michaelgoldberg7127 2 года назад +87

    Marc Bolan is the lead singer. He was the king of "Glam Rock" (Glamour). They were an English group. This song came out the year I graduated High School. It has been one of my fav's ever since. Marc died in a very suspicous car accident after a show. He was in the passenger seat. When the car was examined, they found that the lug nuts on the tires were loose on his side, but nowhere else on the car. So, his death has never been solved. Also, all of his money vanished never to be found. Another great song of theirs is 20th Century Boy. The band broke up after his death.

    • @biff9999
      @biff9999 2 года назад +20

      Hmmm, I know a fair amount about Marc Bolan and T-Rex, and this is the first I've ever heard about the conspiracy theory regarding the car accident in which his girlfriend, Gloria Jones was driving, being offered up as something substantial. And the subsequent "his death has never been solved", which certainly implies that he was murdered. This is all simply fiction. Additionally, his money didn't "vanish". Rather, it was in a series of unbreakable legal discretionary trusts that Bolan had been advised to establish before his death. The money was not able to be accessed by anyone for years, and when the first trusts were finally opened, the money went to Marc Bolan's wife, whom he had not had any relationship with for years, but unfortunately (for Gloria Jones and their son), had never finished legally divorcing in court. Gloria Jones and their son (Rolan) got nothing for many years, except what David Bowie (Marc Bolan's good friend) sent them, out of his own pocket. One of the Jersey-based trusts finally did pay Rolan a bit, which was good, but most of the money in the trusts is still there and access to those now-very-substantial funds (estimates range as high as USD $60 million) is still being argued over.
      So, is the money hard to get at? Undoubtedly, yes - because of the structure of the trusts that Marc Bolan himself and his financial advisors adopted. Did it "vanish"? Decidedly not. All the involved parties know exactly where the money is, and they have known this since his death.
      You are doing a disservice to his memory by offering up sensationalistic disinformation about the circumstances around his death.

    • @penname5766
      @penname5766 2 года назад +10

      It wasn’t after a show. It was after a night out during which both he and Gloria got very drunk. She was almost certainly over the limit and that’s really the only thing that is “suspicious” about it. She fled back home to the US before she had to appear in court and so never faced trial.

      @@TheSeNaBi Please read what I wrote - again. Of course, this is not the first time I've seen this conspiracy theory mentioned. What I wrote is that it's the first time I've seen it "being offered up as something substantial". That is, something to be taken seriously.
      There is simply nothing solid to suggest that the accident was anything but an accident.

    T Rex were the original glam rock band from the UK, very successful and popular over here. Marc Bolan was a prolific writer of songs and poetry, he also wrote a number of books. This is their single release from the album Electric Warrior which hit no1 for a considerable time. I still have my well worn original record. His influence cannot be understated with the likes of David Bowie, Elton John, The Sweet and Queen who admired his glam style. He made a rock film with Elton John and Ringo Starr from the Beatles. His death in a car crash at 30yo ended the group, l remember seeing the picture of the tangled wreckage of his Mini car that hit a tree in the newspapers, it shocked everybody.

    When Mark Feld started out in the 1960s, he was told that a short guy with a nasal voice like his would never make it in the music business, so he became Marc Bolan, and as others have said he named his group (which was originally a duo) Tyrannosaurus Rex, because he wanted "to create the biggest monster ever". When they became T.Rex as a four piece and started doing Marc's unique form of 'electric boogie', for about a year they became the biggest band in the UK since The Beatles, and a wave of 'T.Rexstasy' over took the country, at least among the young teenage girls. Marc was heavily influenced by Elvis, Eddie Cochran and Chuck Berry (as this song fades out, you can hear him singing 'Meanwhile, I'm still thinking', a line from a Chuck Berry song). But he influenced many himself - he's credited with being the first of the first wave of 'glam rock' artists in the UK. And compare the way Prince moved and dressed, to Marc - two short guys with tons of style and class, and the moves. He wrote so many catchy pop/rock classic riffs and songs. A unique talent.

    For a thick period in the early 1970s, Marc Bolan and T Rex were the biggest band in England. Even David Bowie later admitted his flight to fame was fuelled by a desire to beat his old East London sparring partner (Bowie later appeared on Bolan's final TV show in 1977 - just before the latter's untimely death in a car accident).

    Marc Bolan was a hugely important pioneering songwriter/performer in the 70s. We can thank T-Rex for bringing in the big hair, platform shoes and black eyeliner and we can thank Marc for writing an endless series of groove-based pop hooks. They inspired groups like The Sweet, Queen and Roxy Music. Marc and David Bowie were at the vanguard of what became known as Glam Rock. Sadly, Marc died in a car crash at the end of 70s and most of the Rock world died along with him. Check out these songs::

He then changed the band to a four piece and shortened the name. I was so lucky to see the band in 1971 on the Electric Warrior tour in Liverpool UK. Absolutely brilliant.
    I really enjoy your reactions guys. Looking forward to your next reaction. Peace from Liverpool UK 👍✌️🤘☮️

    The song is called Get It On. It is track 2 on side 2 of their album Electric Warrior released in 1971, I know I bought it when it was released. It's only in America that it is called Bang A Gong.

    Singing in the background "get it on, bang a gong, get it on" in the high voices are Mark Volman and Howard Kaylan, formerly of The Turtles.

    In 1960, a twelve-year-old Marc Bolan (then called Mark Feld) is said to have met Eddie Cochran in London and was allowed to carry Eddie’s Gretsch guitar to a waiting limousine. Marc would later introduce Cochran songs into his stage performances. Unfortunately, just like Eddie Cochran who died April 17,1960 in a UK automobile accident on the way to Heathrow Airport at age 21, Marc would die in a London, UK auto accident on Sept 16, 1977, just two weeks before his 30th birthday. Eddie in the late-1950's recorded rock and roll classics like Twenty Flight Rock, Summertime Blues, Jeanie, Jeanie, Jeanie, Something Else, C'mon Everybody, and Three Steps to Heaven (which ironically, he recorded in Jan 1960 with Buddy Holly's backing band The Crickets just before heading to the UK for his final tour) which was his one and only #1 song in the UK.
