Marc Bolan was one of the greatest songwriters in history. From the early Tyrannosaurus Rex acoustic hippy music to the final T Rex album every song was amazing I would reccomend checking out everything
TRex is Funky my man, listen to the entire record “Electric Warrior”...one of the greatest rock records ever...He was the sensation before David Bowie’s Ziggy Stardust. Plus women love that record.
This was the band that got me into buying records and this was one of the first records I bought. They were the first glam-rock band that paved the way for Bowie, Slade and everything that came afterwards, so many bands and performers claimed to be influenced by Marc Bolan. This song has been used in endless movies and commercials, lastly I think in a beer commercial with Charlie Sheen.
T-Rex did a Christmas show in the UK in 1971 in which Elton John was seen on the piano. Just fun fact I read a long time ago. I think I've seen that performance as well.. It was on Top of the Pops.

Great song! This was their one Top Ten Hit in the USA and Canada but in the UK T. Rex were huge! Several big hits and successful albums! Here in Canada their Electric Warrior album and Slider album did very well. Tanx was also a great album! I had them all. Loved Marc Bolan & T.Rex! ♥️🎼🎼🎶🇨🇦🇨🇦
@Antonio Carlin Bowie also stepped in to be a godfather to Sean Lennon after his father, John, was shot. He took him on outings to museums, etc. Bowie had a history of lending a hand to people who were struggling, but kept this sort of thing pretty hush-hush. He was a very private person.
They were the biggest band in the entire world for a brief moment in the '70s..except in America. Here, they're considered a one-hit wonder. Ringo directed a feature length documentary about singer Marc Bolan. Bolan hosted his own weekly TV series at one point! Last I looked all the episodes are on RUclips. He tragically didn't survive the '70s.

Back then we head real artists not minimally talented people relying on auto tune And I don’t mean just Western artists African and Indian music was massive in the 70s. It’s a bit too sanitised now for my liking

The elfin but oh so naughty mastermind of T. Rex is Marc Bolan, one of the creators of Glam Rock. Saw them live about '73. They were HUGE in Europe, had some success here but not quite as much. When I saw them they were opening for The Guess Who. Before the show, the question went up & down the line of people waiting to get in "Who are you here for?". The resounding answer was "T. Rex!" Everyone loved The Guess Who too but Bolan is who we really wanted to see. Got some pics of him too. Try "Jeepster", "Cosmic Dancer" or "Born to Boogie". Bolan's a bit of an acquired taste but I think you'd get it.💙🌿💚
The lyric he sings at the very end ("Meanwhile, I'm still thinkin'") is a tribute to Chuck Berry, as that's originally a line from his 1959 song Little Queenie.

This may have been a clip from Top of the Pops or something like it - on a lot of music shows that were aimed at young people back then the artists performed to their recording. That's why you'll see electric guitars that aren't plugged in. T. Rex was the first of the "hair bands" and strongly influenced groups like Queen and Mott the Hoople.
Cool never knew that. Got to see old Flo and Eddie at Epcot in Disney World. Never thought I would ever have the chance to see those two. Great show too.
@@sourisvoleur4854 yes they are hilarious. When we saw them at Epcot they had the drummer from the Buckingham's and the key board player from the Cars. After the show took the kids down to the stage. Yakked with the drummer. My son's jazz band at school played their song Mercy,mercy. He got a kick out of that. He said Flo and Eddie usually came out and talked with people too but both of them were just super tiered. Peace!
Ride a White Swan, Dreamy Lady, Deborah and Children of the Revolution, just some of Bolan’s great songs. Juat dig into everything he did with T-Rex. An amazing band and an incredible talent that was taken from us too soon.
This is the one I've told you about checking out the Midnight Special version. This is a great song and there was also a great cover in the 80s by Powerstation that's worth checking out. The Midnight Special concert though is a fantastic performance that will knock your socks off!
That's what I thought too. It stands out among the bands that just got up and did their song. Nothing against those performances, many of which were fantastic, but T-Rex definitely went the extra mile on that show.

My favorite T. Rex song of all times led by lead singer and writer Marc Bolan, song came out in 1971. Marc in 1977 tragically died in an auto accident at the young age of 29. RIP Marc. The genre of their music back then was glam rock, pop and soul. T.- Rex earlier had a hit song called HOT LOVE. Their 1971 album ELECTRIC WARRIOR has many good songs on it and worth a listen.
This song was written and recorded when T. Rex was touring America in 1971. The group had made inroads in their native UK with their 1970 self-titled album, but were little-known in the US. Marc Bolan wanted to change that by coming up with something that would strike to the heart in America. According to T. Rex drummer Bill Legend, he and Bolan worked out the rhythm one day in Bolan's hotel room, and when the tour got to Los Angeles, the group reconvened with members of the team that worked on their first album: producer Tony Visconti and backup singers Howard Kaylan and Mark Volman, who were members of The Turtles and recorded as Flo & Eddie. At Kaylan's home in Laurel Canyon, they spent all night working up the song, and the next day, they recorded it at Wally Heider Studios in LA. When they got to the studio, they had the chorus, the rhythm, and the "you're dirty and sweet" line, but Bolan had to come up with the other lyrics on the spot, indicating he wasn't thinking too hard about them. Everyone agrees that cocaine was involved throughout the process.
LOL, the rolling background thing was being done in Hanna-Barbera's TV animation for about 14 years before this. Max Fleischer actually shot cartoon cels in front of small sets being moved on a turntable. It's why 1930s Popeye and Betty Boop films almost look like 3D. Long story short, other than "chroma key" (TV's "green screen"), most of their tech was old by then.
Most videos from the late 60's early 70's unless shot for a TV show or movie was shot on 8mm in black and white. I remember James Taylors Fire and Rain video with a young Liza Minnelli running around and rolling on the ground for the length of the song.

I remember watching the BBC news hearing that Marc had crashed his Mini and died from the injuries. So sad. A huge fan of T-Rex is Captain Sensible. You should review some of his work. Captain is a founding member and lead guitarist for legendary punk band The Damned in 1976. In fact, Captain did a cover of T-Rex's 'Ride a White Swan' to honor him.
Another great one lost too soon. Marc Bolan was a tremendous guitarist. My wife said you reminded her of Billy Preston. She proved it by showing me Billy's picture with the afro. You guys could have been brothers.
It's great that you chose this track and it looks like you enjoyed it too. I'm a big Marc Bolan/T.Rex fan and I even got to record this track in the studio in 1995. Unfortunately, the video you chose wasn't the best performance of the song (Yes, the group were miming to the recorded version of the song) - it was a badly done TV appearance in Europe and although in colour and reasonably clarity, it didn't capture T.Rex at their best. The song was their second of four U.K. No.1 singles in 1971 to 1972 and it was their biggest charting hit in the U.S., where it was a Top 10 hit, supported by a live tour that they did. Ironically, these days, American music listeners are probably more familiar with their U.K. Top 10 hits, "Children of the Revolution" or "20th Century Boy" (Which featured in a famous career launching Levi Jeans TV commercial featuring a young Brad Pitt in 1991). Marc Bolan started his music career in the early/mid 1960's, idolizing the folk sounds of Bob Dylan (Marc was a self taught guitarist), he moved onto proto electric guitar Rock (Similar to The Who), before morphing into English folk tinged pop (Following in the wake of Fairport Convention). He formed a Duo called Tyrannosaurus Rex and unleashed a mix of music and poetry on an mystified English Public. Coming at the right time in the late 1960's, the group's third album even outsold one of the albums by the Jimi Hendrix Experience. By late 1970 (After changing his duo partner), Marc had expanded the group with two additional members and embraced the more electric Rock/Pop sound of "T.Rex" (Further developments followed in the remaining years up to 1977). As "Get It On" (As the song was called in the U.K. - the "Bang A Gong" part was added to the U.S. release of the song to avoid a copyright clash with another song called that at the time) was written during the early years of "T.Rex", it still had mystical acoustic lyrics left over from the days of "Tyrannosaurus Rex", which must've lost some of it's translation when released in the U.S., although as you have noticed, the general message of the song is still quite clear. Additionally, the track featured a pair of (Male) American Backing Vocalists, Mark Volman + Howard Kaylan, which greatly elevated the track. They had been in the group, "The Turtles" and had also worked with "Frank Zappa's Mothers of Invention". This American assistance might've been a conscious effort to appeal to the American market. Marc further went on to feature American singers as his Backing Vocalists (Such as Gloria Jones, who later became the Mother of their Son in 1975), embracing a "Cosmic Soul" sound, long before David Bowie did the same thing with the "Young American" album later on. Marc Bolan and David Bowie were friends, but were also chart rivals and were quite competitive. They worked together and David appeared, briefly, with Marc on his own U.K. TV show, "Marc" on the 3rd of September 1977. Tragically, Marc died in a car crash on the 16th of September 1977 at the age of 29. His timeless music has remained popular and continues to inspire new artists. "Get it On" was only the tip of the iceberg! :-)

When Mar Bolan died he had a young son rolan Bolan ...none of estate was left to him or his mother and they was left more or less destitute...Marc Bolan close friend and Rolans godfather David Bowie stepped in and financially helped them out and payed for his education right up to when Marc Bolans legal wife died and the estate was handed over to rolan when he was about 19 ,just shows what a generous man David Bowie was

Sad Marc Bolan died so young. He was close with David Bowie and there were talks of them forming a band.
He was friends with Elton John too. There's another video for this song and you can see Elton playing the piano.

The elfin but oh so naughty mastermind of T. Rex is Marc Bolan, one of the creators of Glam Rock.
Saw them live about '73. They were HUGE in Europe, had some success here but not quite as much.
When I saw them they were opening for The Guess Who. Before the show, the question went up & down the line of people waiting to get in "Who are you here for?". The resounding answer was "T. Rex!" Everyone loved The Guess Who too but Bolan is who we really wanted to see. Got some pics of him too.
Try "Jeepster", "Cosmic Dancer" or "Born to Boogie". Bolan's a bit of an acquired taste but I think you'd get it.💙🌿💚

Saw them live a few times, mostly with Steve Peregrine Took. Marc Bolan was tiny. Around 5 feet 4, a little bit smaller than me.

This may have been a clip from Top of the Pops or something like it - on a lot of music shows that were aimed at young people back then the artists performed to their recording. That's why you'll see electric guitars that aren't plugged in. T. Rex was the first of the "hair bands" and strongly influenced groups like Queen and Mott the Hoople.

@@sourisvoleur4854 yes they are hilarious. When we saw them at Epcot they had the drummer from the Buckingham's and the key board player from the Cars. After the show took the kids down to the stage. Yakked with the drummer. My son's jazz band at school played their song Mercy,mercy. He got a kick out of that. He said Flo and Eddie usually came out and talked with people too but both of them were just super tiered. Peace!

This is the one I've told you about checking out the Midnight Special version. This is a great song and there was also a great cover in the 80s by Powerstation that's worth checking out. The Midnight Special concert though is a fantastic performance that will knock your socks off!
That's what I thought too. It stands out among the bands that just got up and did their song. Nothing against those performances, many of which were fantastic, but T-Rex definitely went the extra mile on that show.

My favorite T. Rex song of all times led by lead singer and writer Marc Bolan, song came out in 1971. Marc in 1977 tragically died in an auto accident at the young age of 29. RIP Marc. The genre of their music back then was glam rock, pop and soul. T.- Rex earlier had a hit song called HOT LOVE. Their 1971 album ELECTRIC WARRIOR has many good songs on it and worth a listen.
This song was written and recorded when T. Rex was touring America in 1971. The group had made inroads in their native UK with their 1970 self-titled album, but were little-known in the US. Marc Bolan wanted to change that by coming up with something that would strike to the heart in America.
According to T. Rex drummer Bill Legend, he and Bolan worked out the rhythm one day in Bolan's hotel room, and when the tour got to Los Angeles, the group reconvened with members of the team that worked on their first album: producer Tony Visconti and backup singers Howard Kaylan and Mark Volman, who were members of The Turtles and recorded as Flo & Eddie. At Kaylan's home in Laurel Canyon, they spent all night working up the song, and the next day, they recorded it at Wally Heider Studios in LA. When they got to the studio, they had the chorus, the rhythm, and the "you're dirty and sweet" line, but Bolan had to come up with the other lyrics on the spot, indicating he wasn't thinking too hard about them. Everyone agrees that cocaine was involved throughout the process.
I always took 'dirty sweet' as more of a high school vixen than a streetwalker, but that's my interpretation.
This was a high tech video for the early 70's.
LOL, the rolling background thing was being done in Hanna-Barbera's TV animation for about 14 years before this.
Max Fleischer actually shot cartoon cels in front of small sets being moved on a turntable. It's why 1930s Popeye and Betty Boop films almost look like 3D.
Long story short, other than "chroma key" (TV's "green screen"), most of their tech was old by then.
Most videos from the late 60's early 70's unless shot for a TV show or movie was shot on 8mm in black and white. I remember James Taylors Fire and Rain video with a young Liza Minnelli running around and rolling on the ground for the length of the song.

I remember watching the BBC news hearing that Marc had crashed his Mini and died from the injuries. So sad. A huge fan of T-Rex is Captain Sensible. You should review some of his work. Captain is a founding member and lead guitarist for legendary punk band The Damned in 1976. In fact, Captain did a cover of T-Rex's 'Ride a White Swan' to honor him.

First person to glam up was Roy wood on the moves hit brontosaurus in 1970 , Jeff lynnes first involvement in a hit single as well .

It's great that you chose this track and it looks like you enjoyed it too. I'm a big Marc Bolan/T.Rex fan and I even got to record this track in the studio in 1995.
Unfortunately, the video you chose wasn't the best performance of the song (Yes, the group were miming to the recorded version of the song) - it was a badly done TV appearance in Europe and although in colour and reasonably clarity, it didn't capture T.Rex at their best. The song was their second of four U.K. No.1 singles in 1971 to 1972 and it was their biggest charting hit in the U.S., where it was a Top 10 hit, supported by a live tour that they did. Ironically, these days, American music listeners are probably more familiar with their U.K. Top 10 hits, "Children of the Revolution" or "20th Century Boy" (Which featured in a famous career launching Levi Jeans TV commercial featuring a young Brad Pitt in 1991).
Marc Bolan started his music career in the early/mid 1960's, idolizing the folk sounds of Bob Dylan (Marc was a self taught guitarist), he moved onto proto electric guitar Rock (Similar to The Who), before morphing into English folk tinged pop (Following in the wake of Fairport Convention). He formed a Duo called Tyrannosaurus Rex and unleashed a mix of music and poetry on an mystified English Public. Coming at the right time in the late 1960's, the group's third album even outsold one of the albums by the Jimi Hendrix Experience. By late 1970 (After changing his duo partner), Marc had expanded the group with two additional members and embraced the more electric Rock/Pop sound of "T.Rex" (Further developments followed in the remaining years up to 1977). As "Get It On" (As the song was called in the U.K. - the "Bang A Gong" part was added to the U.S. release of the song to avoid a copyright clash with another song called that at the time) was written during the early years of "T.Rex", it still had mystical acoustic lyrics left over from the days of "Tyrannosaurus Rex", which must've lost some of it's translation when released in the U.S., although as you have noticed, the general message of the song is still quite clear.
Additionally, the track featured a pair of (Male) American Backing Vocalists, Mark Volman + Howard Kaylan, which greatly elevated the track. They had been in the group, "The Turtles" and had also worked with "Frank Zappa's Mothers of Invention". This American assistance might've been a conscious effort to appeal to the American market. Marc further went on to feature American singers as his Backing Vocalists (Such as Gloria Jones, who later became the Mother of their Son in 1975), embracing a "Cosmic Soul" sound, long before David Bowie did the same thing with the "Young American" album later on. Marc Bolan and David Bowie were friends, but were also chart rivals and were quite competitive. They worked together and David appeared, briefly, with Marc on his own U.K. TV show, "Marc" on the 3rd of September 1977. Tragically, Marc died in a car crash on the 16th of September 1977 at the age of 29. His timeless music has remained popular and continues to inspire new artists. "Get it On" was only the tip of the iceberg! :-)
T Rex is Essentially Marc Bolan, but have you heard Tommy Bolin? No relation but oddly passed less than a year apart. Check "Poast Toastee" Deepest, warmest greasiest guitar tone ever! Hugely influential. A must react.

If you haven't played it yet, check out the cover version of this by the '80's group The Power Station, which was a band primarily made up of members of Duran Duran and fronted by Robert Palmer. It's not often that I would rate a cover better than the original but this is one of those exceptions.

Marc Bolan was great friends with David Bowie, he played guitar on Bowies The Prettiest Star on Bowies Aladdin Sane Album. He was a pioneer of Glam Rock.
When Mar Bolan died he had a young son rolan Bolan ...none of estate was left to him or his mother and they was left more or less destitute...Marc Bolan close friend and Rolans godfather David Bowie stepped in and financially helped them out and payed for his education right up to when Marc Bolans legal wife died and the estate was handed over to rolan when he was about 19 ,just shows what a generous man David Bowie was
