Maybe the collet has a tiny bur that’s keeping the bit from sliding in

Hey Vernon , definitely a great supplement so you have a cordless option, especially when you already have batteries for Ryobi like we do, but also an excellent backup or second router. It's still my only router but do plan to get another corded router and a DeWalt cordless like Eric prefers.

Thanks for the in-depth review, Eric. I have this router and concur with the battery life issue. I probably had mine running a lot longer than you due to my inexperience. Anyway, I bought a DeWalt 611 and solved the problem. The cord is not a problem for me because it's always on the back side. Thanks for the alert on the collet sleeve. I don't have the ear for the chatter as you do. I'll check my router today.,

Update: I just checked the collet sleeve and the fit is fine and the bit slides easity in the collet. I bought this router about 6 months ago.

I have yet to get my router bit past the bottom end of the collet. That is my main concern with mine. I will try again to get the bit to slide in as far as you did......but previously I couldn't. And that's exactly why I said I would never sell nor even give away that router. I just don't trust it to hold the bit in place. Everything else you talked about I can wholeheartedly agree with you on. Another great tool review. Thanks!

Great review. I tried this router a while back and was not impressed with it. I boxed it up and took it back. I absolutely love the Milwaukee cordless but then again I already had a bunch of the M18 tool platform. The DWP 611 and the Milwaukee 2723-20 are my work horses.

I have had mine for about 3 years. I have no play in the housing and the collet is fine. granted it has somewhat more chatter than my 611 but that is expected. I have 7 batteries so I can go for a while.

Sam is always pushing me to buy battery powered tools. I guess I’m old fashioned but I just feel like it has to have a cord or it’s a toy. Lol. I know that’s not what you are trying to convey as you do like the Milwaukee and Dewalt. I do love that you give honest reviews. That is how I chose my Bosch. Your only complaint about it was how hard it is to set the depth. I found that to be pretty easy once I learned to use two fingers. One finger inside the housing on the adjusting wheel and the other outside the housing, I’m about to put my new base plate on the Dewalt and am looking forward to giving it a whirl. Thank you for all you did modifying it and for the base plate.

This is what I have been using all along but originally bought it because I have so many Ryobi tools and batteries and they've all done well. I'm making money and good product with my router but definitely want to get another corded one and a Dewalt battery powered one as well. I agree with your review and have used mine a lot. I think my collet may have been similar to your thoughts but also it may be something with the nut or threaded area too. It does seem like I worked through most of that stiffness but it does still sometimes seem like certain bits need forced or pushed in more. If not a thin tipped bit I put it in semi-tight and push against a 2x4 workbench brace to help push it in. Just like sometimes for me I might actually have to use a pair of pliers to loosen a bit or actually remove the nut all the way. I'm sure some of that is the minute difference in bit makers thickness on their shafts. Great honest review because it's the only router I've used for a few years and am definitely ready not only to upgrade , though I'm happy with it, I definitely need another battery powered option and for sure a corded option because even though I have multiple batteries, when you are staying at it with many signs it will get annoying having to remove, charge, replace, etc. Not to mention eventually needing to replace a battery. Also, in all the years I've had Ryobi cordless tools I've only had one battery fail early in its life and they were quick with support to help and send another. Overall I love the Ryobi as a budget friendly tool for the average person, though if I were doing really fine craftsmanship or commercial all day work , I would likely be using DeWalt, Milwaukee, even Ridgid and the like. I'll be sending my first email soon as I've been watching a few years and have finally ventured into making money with signs. You've been invaluable as a resource and one of the rare times that you could actually find all you need to know in one place for routing signs, though I do encourage knowledge from all angles and sources. I'm in central Arkansas and so upset recently when I saw I missed a chance to have met up with you and Ryan. I'm about 45 minutes away from Heber Springs where y'all went. Definitely holler at me next time and we'll fish, hunt, eat or just shoot the breeze. I know Ryan would love to have a "Sprite" anytime lol. At first when he began appearing I wasn't sure (something new) but I think it has been a great addition! I miss your dad and know y'all do to but man what a legacy all of you have built and passed on.

I can also attest to the longevity of Ryobi tools in my experience as I have never had any of mine wear out yet. I've used many for over a decade or so. Also, in the router the smaller batteries definitely don't last very long but the bigger ones, depending on variances, lasts roughly half hour give or take in most situations. Catch the sales where you can buy a tool get a tool and you can usually get a 2 pack of the big batteries as your free tool, which I did long ago. Prices are going up but I think I actually did that the year I got my router a couple of years ago and it was like $99 during a sale and got the router and 2 big batteries. Hard to beat at that price.

Sorry for coming back for more lol but wanted to add that I had made a base plate and it was fine but finally bought one from you guys off your Amazon store and it was absolutely a GAME CHANGER! If anyone has a stock baseplate that is like the little square one that comes with the Ryobi, make your next purchase be a base plate from Eric and team because I couldn't do half the quality or speed without changing over to their base plate. Also, after making my own, though I could do a better job and maybe a hair cheaper, it was beyond worth it to order from them instead. It was also a way for me to pay my dues ,so to speak, for all their lessons, help, friendship over the years. Don't wait... get the plate! ;-) (not paid to say this lol)

Great review Eric the Ryobi in Australia is far different to that one.
I chose to go with Ryobi due to the fact that I get 6 years replacement warranty which means I don't have to wait for repair I also have an Ozito which is like the Rigid as for the noise and collet I have never had that problem there must be a defect with Vernon's.
I have to agree with you on the Ryobi battery they are pretty sub standard which is why I opted for the corded version which has a way different set up mine in screws up with a toggle wheel which runs on a track and is less bulky and easy to use would be interesting to see if you could look at a corded version sometime would be interesting to see if the American version is different to the Australian.
Do Techtronics make them for America our version comes from New Zealand?

Thank you Dean. Happy to hear yours is running well and the collet is good. I may do one on the corded version someday. I don' t know who manufactures them. Thanks so much for the feedback and kind words.

@@oldave100 Hi Eric yes Techtronics manufacturers them they supply our major hardware store called Bunnings warehouse they also manufacture Ozito which is a Bunnings warehouse brand similar to the rigid would probably be a Lowe's brand is that how it I'm not sure what Lowe's sells but they tell us that our Bunnings is a replica of Lowe's interesting how different countries have different products made by the same company in different versions mine was $99 Australian dollars which is much cheaper than DeWalt which can be around $300 and some companies here will send it all the back to the United States to be fixed which is a shame because they are a really great product.

Great video Eric..yes this would be a great router price if you already have batteries and a charger if your just starting out and not sure if making signs is for you and not to break the bank buying a more expensive router .. But owning the dewalt cordless & corded plus now the Milwaukee m18. I as well get nothing in return from dewalt or Milwaukee but these would be my first choice if someone asked my opinion but like Eric its just our experiences in tools

Did you check the collet and see if it is the 1/4" collet? Should be written on the side.
I have the same router and you get a 1/4" and a 6mm collet included.
Possibly has the wrong size collet installed.
