HOW TO USE A ROUTER // Ryobi PCL 424, cordless, 18v, trim router: features & vacuum attachment

  • 🚨 IMPORTANT NOTE! 🚨
    In this video I said that you router from left to right. That is true if you are standing in front of the project. However, if you are using the router on the opposite side of the wood, you would move the router from left to right. The best way to keep it straight would be this:
    If you are routing on the outer edge of a piece of the wood, move the router in a counter-clockwise direction.
    If you are routing on an inside opening, move the router in a clockwise direction. 👍
    This router is similar to the one that I used. Unfortunately, I don't think Ryobi sells the one with the vacuum attachment anymore.

    Thank you for watching EMPOWERED PEEPS!

With this tool, you can produce beautiful, professional edges on all of your woodworking projects. Routers are fun and easy to use and the results are so satisfying!
    Though I cover safety in depth, I still recommend that you read and follow your instruction manual. Ultimately your safety is your own responsibility.
    Now that you are equipped the the knowledge of how to use this tool, I encourage you to grab a router and create something beautiful...
    Something you're proud of!
    And when you do, please post a picture on Instagram and tag ‪@ryanetotherescue‬ because I would love to see what you made!!
    If you have any comments, questions, or additional tips that you'd like to share, I'd love to hear them!
    See you NEXT WEEK!!

    Thank you very much for the details about how to install the bit. The official Ryobi video for this step magically missed almost all of the steps and I was totally unable to get the bit in until I saw your video.

    Very refreshing to see a woman giving good advises on how to use power tools!
    I'm just a happy amateur and may not have the same ability for precise motion as a professional, but I would actually position the base plate in the opposite direction to what you demonstrated.
    - When using the Roundover bit and the Side Groove bit, having more area of the base plate on the work piece will reduce the chance of tilting the vertical axis of the router (which causes uneven cuts).
    - When using the vertical Groove Cut bit, the distance (of the groove) from the edge guide will not be influenced by any rotation of the router around the vertical axis if the circular part of the base plate is held against the edge guide.

    • @ryanetotherescue
      @ryanetotherescue  2 года назад +2

      Excellent input! Thank you so much! I was also thinking the base plate should have been the other way for the round over bit. But I positioned it like the instruction manual (which I thought was weird). I'm glad to hear that my instincts were correct. Thanks for watching!! :)

      @@ryanetotherescue I bought the router itself from Amazon. I also purchased the edge guide, battery and vacuum attachment, all separately, from Amazon as well. Having no experience in using a router, I went through several pieces of scrap wood in learning how to use it. I did notice that the operator must put positive pressure on the machine and also ensure that it is perfectly level with the wood, especially when doing edge routing. I first used the round over bit and noticed that I was making some “ugly” cuts but quickly figured out what I was doing wrong…Thanks again!

    I've done my share of routing in the past. Got pretty good at sliding dovetail joinery, not anywhere near master level, but got done what I needed . along with decorative edging. etc.
    Being a huge Ryobi fan, have had my eye on this model, tired of the corded tools.
    The best nearly dustless way of routing I've found is using a router table....ah..but the set ups involved....lol.
    I must say, this video was extremely well done & professional, very informative, no stone left unturned here that I could see..... I think I'm in love now......... with the tool, of course.😘

    • @ryanetotherescue
      @ryanetotherescue  2 месяца назад

      Hi there! Great question and I can totally see how that terminology would be confusing. “Fixed base” simply means that the base plate of the router does not adjust up and down. Mine does adjust up and down, so it’s called an adjustable base. That feature is used to adjust the depth of the router bit. Fixed base does not mean that the entire tool is stationary (just the base). It is still a handheld tool.
      Happy DIYing!! 😊👍

      That’s strange! Do you live near a Home Depot? If so, take it in there and have one of their experts figure it out. If it’s not working properly, hopefully they will replace it.
      One time my chuck was not working properly and the expert couldn’t figure it out either so they have me a new router! 🙌🏽

      @@ryanetotherescue no rounded end off the edge. Square side inboard on face of the workpiece. It’s the widest part of the plate. Being careful I press down with my left thumb to get good registration for this tippy tool. The only thing you can screw up with round-overs is the bit too proud. It just occurred to me to mount an offset handle there to remove my thumb from the proximity of the bit. Still using my 30+ year old pistol grip Makita with a knob on the front.

    @scottweisman7313 Год назад +1

    I'm currently in the market for a cordless palm router, and since I'm already in the Ryobu platform the PCL424 is one that I'm considering. Watched your video to get some info on it, and was surprised at a couple of your "tips." First, since I don't own the router yet I can't be sure, but it certainly appears that the dust collection port should go on the open side, not in place of the flat peice already installed. You will get far better dust collectiong on ANY tool the more enclosed the cutting area is. Second, routers are not ALWAYS used left to right. If you were to use the router on the side farthest from you and move left to right that would be a climb cut and is extremely dangerous as it can cause a kickback event. You should always move a router counter-clockwise around the outside of a work piece. Therefore if you were to route the side farthest from you, you would need to move it from right to left. Also, if you were routing the interior of a work piece one some like the inside of a donut shaped piece for example you would move the clockwise. I would hope you could make an edit or addendum to this video to clear that up. I'd be worried that someone who has never used a router and only watches your video might do something like move in a counter-clockwise motion on the interior of a work piece, or from left to right on side farthest from them, and cause a dangerous kickback and hurt themselves. Otherwise the video was helpful in making my purchase decision.

    Another reason to make sure the bit doesn't bottom out in the collet is that it prevents the bit getting stuck in the collet. Unfortunately I learned this the hard way and freeing a stuck bit is a pain.

    Thank you for this video, very helpful! Ryobi instruction manuals are usually decent, but I found this router's instructions rather unclear at times. Btw I'm curious, have you found the measuring ruler on the side useful? I don't see how it could be used consistently / accurately, because every time you install a different bit, the recommended gap that we are supposed to leave between the bit and the collet will vary slightly - not to mention the varying lengths of bits themselves. Maybe I'm thinking about this the wrong way?

    • @ryanetotherescue
      @ryanetotherescue  11 месяцев назад +1

      Perhaps the measurement on the side is useful if you use the same bit over and over, then you can remember your preferred setting.

    Not sure if anyone is run into this, but my depth kept changing. It was annoying and I found out the screw that secures the black latch needed to be a bit tighter. Since it wasn't tight enough, the bit depth would drop during use. There's a small allen key to tighten it. Tighten it until you can't move the depth guide, then loosen it just enough until it comes free.

    Just FYI you don’t always go left to right that’s wrong.if your routing on the outside its counterclockwise and if it’s on the inside you router clockwise. So if you have a picture frame for example the outside is routed counterclockwise and the inside of the frame clockwise. Also depends which way your bit cuts when spinning. But the above example is most widely used with standard bits.

    I'm a huge Ryobi fan, have a lot invested. So much so, it takes (2) Husky 72" toolboxes to store it all. However this router, is simply nothing more than a piece of JUNK. I've bought 2 of them thinking maybe the first one I had for well over a year before I ever used it was just bad out the box with excessive vibration. Nope, then 2nd one was exactly the same, then I happened to be at a friend's home and his does exactly the same thing. 15 minutes of using this (if you make it that long) and you are beat to death by vibration! Again, absolute JUNK and the only Ryobi tool I've ever complained about.
