I sold my first sign to a friend for 50! I used a better grade of pine and the one thing I have to realize is don’t forget to add shipping cost into your price so actually I only made 30.00 which if I wasn’t watching you guys I wouldn’t have made that much! 30.00 to me is like a 100. Thanks for inspiring us!
That's awesome, Michael!!! Congratulations buddy!! Thank you for all the support
Merry Christmas to all of you. You are very much appreciated
Thanks Helen! Merry Christmas to you as well
So Awesome! Just got my kit yesterday was able to play around so fun and harder than you guys make it look. Giving my first sign a shot this weekend
Right on, Tom! You'll get the hand for it in no time!👍👍
Amazing job! Just bought the pattern last week made one and looks amazing on my wall. Thank you guys love your channel, learned so much…
Right on, David! We really appreciate the support 👍👍
Another great video, I think these types of videos you guys are putting out are fantastic!
Thanks buddy! We’re trying to come up with new and useful stuff! If you have an idea for a video feel free to shoot me an email Ryan@makeawoodsign.com
Once again great job guys!! I learn somthing new every time I watch! Thanks guys keep it up!
Thanks Lane! We'll keep pumping the videos out haha
You brought up some great points to think about. I only make signs to give as gifts but still enjoyed watching the video!
Thank you Lori! I still do a lot of signs as wedding gifts and Christmas presents. And that still saves money because you don’t have to go buy anything😂😂
@@oldave100 Yes and it's always such a good feeling to give a gift you've taken the time to make for someone.
This is my favorite work/hobby.
Have not done this in years. Always wood burning. How do you make a stencil? I'm trying to make a sign outside of my coffee shop
We make all of our stencils with lasers. You can check out the website makeawoodsign.com/shop we have hundreds of different designs and multiple different fonts and sizes.
@@oldave100 wow, thanks so much
It really is helpful not to have to change bits. I started with a DW 618 for everything but then bought a couple of DW 611 to use the profile and carving liner, keeping the 618 for the 60 degree (sometimes the 90). Having not to change bits in the middle of a carve will speed up the process tremendously.
It definitely makes a HUGE difference !
I love your videosi. This came up at the right time for me as I was looking for an idea to make extra cash this holiday. Also, thinking of something to make for family and friends. I like the tips to make things go faster and you tell everything you use. Thanks!
Our pleasure Glenda! It’s definitely a great way to make some extra money, but also we have people that have transitioned into Full-time sign carving, and done very well.
This is Rowdy and I just saw y'all in hickory NC and you make very good 👍🏻 videos!! I'm 8 years old!!
Hey Rowdy!! It was awesome to meet you today, buddy!!! We had a great time at the show, we'll be doing a little meet and greet at the klingspore store on Sunday in Hickory, come by and hang out with us for a little while, if you can
You guys are awesome. I can’t wait to get better at this craft
Thanks buddy! You'll be carving better than us in no time!👍👍👍
What a beautiful sign :) I've been doing mostly custom stuff but I gotta look into doing stock signs..I just did a sign about the same size and sold it for 40 but 50 sounds about right ;)
Stock signs are definitely a must. It’s nice cause you can do them at your leisure and then as soon as somebody buys one you just hand it to them. Keep up the great work buddy!
For sure gonna do some...I think I possibly have a place that will display them also...big moves a commin:)
Sweet!! Good for you, buddy!!
Hey guys just watch this video great info. Some great take aways thank you
Thank you David, happy you enjoyed it and we could help.
Love this! I hope to start doing more sign carving soon. I've really been enjoying your shorts too! Thanks!!!
Thank you Gayle!
Just subscribed, great video ty, ya'l make me wanna do this, gonna give it a go, we'll see how well soon, tnx again, awesome!
Right on, man! It's a ton of fun and there's a really short learning curve
Great video Thanks for sharing!
Our pleasure, buddy!
I loved it. Thanks for all the videos; they're really helpful.
Thanks man! We're always happy to help 👍👍
You guys are great! Thank you for the education!
Our pleasure, buddy!
I haven't done many stock signs, but I would like to, so that I can do some craft shows. Mostly I do commission work and charge what I think would be a fair price for the work. No real math behind it, just knowing how easy or hard of work it is for me and the cost of the wood. Once I'm set up properly I'm going to be using some of your selling/ pricing ideas. Thank for another great video!
The great thing about having stock signs and being able to do craft shows, is that you can still take custom work. I’ve done quite a few small shows where I couldn’t carve on site, but still had a lot of custom orders. And we will have an updated pricing video coming up soon!
Right on guys😊
Thanks, Julian!
Eggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggslent Job Guys! Y'all Rock!
😁😁 Our pleasure, buddy!
Nice EZ E the next video is going to be a battle round you doing the same thing...lol...🤘🤘🤘
😂😂😂 challenge accepted!
Awesome thanks for sharing great info: you two are the best. and God Bless Always.
Thanks Danny!!
I love the stencils!
Same here! They make stock signs super duper easy!!
Love it! I'm gonna have to start making some stalk signs.
Thanks buddy! Definitely a great way to add to your business
Great video.....and proof you can make money doing this!!
Absolutely!!
Pretty cool! Good job guys.
Thanks Greg!
50/SF is where I try to be at in my area
However I’m nowhere near as fast at the carving as you guys are
I have a few different ones that seem to repetitively do well for me
Speed takes time, buddy. But that’s awesome you’ve got a couple of good sellers!
Thanks guys for the video! Very helpful!
Thank you Mike!
That's a awesome sign
Thanks Garry!
I became a member of your channel, love you guys. I am curios to know which brand routers do you use at your shop?
Thanks buddy! We appreciate it👍👍
Our favorite router is the DeWalt Cordless, but we have a bunch of different ones. Our newest cordless router is the craftsman, and it's awesome!
Hi, I may be wrong but did I watch you and your dad make these signs together I think I bought bits from you
Hi Kathy, ya dad and I work together. And thank you for the business!👍👍
Thank you , a friend said you were a different family all together lol
Very cool video....
Thanks buddy!
$50 a square foot is what I try to do. That's using cedar and pine. I'm not as fast as Ryan. Like Dave, I tend to use the profile bit most of the time. I need to give the 60 a shot. Thanks.
That’s a good price. The profile is a great way to go for the sharpest lines, but the 60 is a lot faster
Good job Ryan. What was the finish you used? It turned so dark when it was applied.
Thanks Wayne! It was just a rust oleum clear. And it turned kind of dark because I was using pine, so it just had a wet look. It dries a little lighter than that
Nice looking sign
Thanks Robert!
Please tell me who's playing the background?
Is there any possibility that you might make a smaller version? Something that might be under 12" wide.
You mean to time it and see how long it takes?
No, I mean a template with the same wording, just so I can carve it on a piece of select pine. I was thinking of maybe a 1x10.
Ooohh, gotcha. If you want to send mom an email, she can let you know if we can do that. vicki@makeawoodsign.com
Eric, do you still have the Arizona site? How is your Dad doing? Been a long time.
Bob Tomasino
Hey Bob, we're still down in Az, for now and Dad passed about 2 years ago. Good to hear from you, buddy!
What clear coat do you use?
For this sign it was just rust oleum clear. If it was gonna be an exterior sign in rough elements, then I will probably go with spar urethane or helmsman
At 7m:10s the first sander you used before the orbital, was that a drill???? thx
That’s the DeWalt disc sander, we LOVE it! You can find it on our Amazon store.
Amazon.com/shop/makeawoodsign
@@oldave100 oh wow just checked the price here in the UK its literally double the price and change than what it is in the USA.....£174 😭
Christmas present I think... thx for sending the link. 👍👍👍👍
Dang! That's pretty pricey!
Which number of bit usse for letter
I used the 60 degree on all of the letters for this sign.
What is that design called under FAMILY?
It's the "Family layout stencil"
You can check it out right here makeawoodsign.com/products/family-layout-template?_pos=1&_psq=family+stencil&_ss=e&_v=1.0
I thought cherry being a hardwood would be a little difficult to carve but didn’t look like Ryan had any issues I got a bunch of cherry laying around think I am gonna carve a sign out of a piece
Cherry is one of dad's favorites! It makes some beautiful signs
I like this chanel..i'm from indonesian..
Thank you so much Dedi! We'll keep the videos coming👍🏻👍🏻
AND THE WINNER IS!!!!!!!!!!!!!
😂😂😂
The sign came out very well. Since the video is about how long it takes to make a $50 sign, I do wonder how can one be competitive with those that have CNC machines and can produce these signs in much less time. CNC machine prices have substantially dropped the last few years and perhaps freehand routing will not be profitable soon.
In my opinion, the main selling point that we have for signs, is that they're handmade. Every one we do is different. If someone want a machine made, mass produced sign, they can find those at wal mart for $20. And there's nothing wrong with that, but it's machine made. There's not much craftsmanship involved in that.
@@oldave100 I agree. Machines are taking over so many areas of woodworking. I don’t classify CNC machines as woodworking but if you visit the main router forums, much of the talk is about setting up CNC machines. I suppose it could be said using a router instead of hand tools for signs is also moving away from woodworking.
Ya, that's definitely true. I gues everyone has to make their own decision on what they think. I just personally prefer making sawdust myself, instead of programming a computer to do it
👍👍👍👍🍺😎
Thanks Ozzie!
