    One of my pet peeves about Harleys is all the different size safety screws. I had to buy a boat load of all size bits, and American standard wrenches and sockets, Allen's head wrenches. The list goes on and on.

    Just done exactly the same process on a 2003 anniversary sporty here in the UK. Only 7200 miles but had been sitting for 4 years. Needed master cylinder rebuild, fork seals, carb overhaul plus a full oil and filter service. The fuel tank was pristine inside but the tyres were rotted out. Put on new rims and stainless spokes as the originals were a bit manky. Now looking and riding good.

    The shortened diaphragm spring that came out of the carburetor is part of the re-jetting done when the carburetor was modified to accommodate the aftermarket exhaust pipes and air cleaner. I believe it allows the slide and needle to open a little earlier. Back in the day, we cut a couple loops off of that spring to shorten it.

    • @butlercustoms
      @butlercustoms  5 месяцев назад +1

      I’ve ran into something close to that before. The issue was not with the carb but with the petcock. Had one that when he turned the reserve on there was still enough fuel that ran through the ON position as well and that caused too much pressure for the float needle to stop the fuel. It was weird. Never had an issue like that before or since.

      If plugs are fouled then you are getting fuel and not enough spark or spark at the wrong time. So I would suspect a timing or spark issue.

    Eyeballing is not how you set the float height. There is a spec in the manual for that. Also if you would have bought an OEM rebuild kit instead of a generic Keihin kit then all the new parts would have fit. Amateur hour!

    • @butlercustoms
      @butlercustoms  11 месяцев назад +3

      The spec in the service manual is useless with aftermarket floats. That’s why I blow in the fuel inlet and eyeball and feel when the fuel actually cuts off. To me seeing and feeling is much more accurate than setting a spec in a book and not checking it. And if I can save the customer some money on a generic rebuild kit, and it works, then that’s fine with me. And as far as being an amateur, aren’t we all?

      I like the video, it is very informative. I have put my fxdx 1999 apart and have some understanding of the keihin cv carb being serviced in this video. It is a very good Walk through but I agree, there is a certain procedure for the setup of the float. I would also get an OEM replacement kit , they do not cost a fortune. Eventually the carb has to work, which has been achieved. Very good instruction !
