This was by far the best video I have seen to explain to his process. I have a basket case I have rebuilt from the ground up . The biffest problem is it cranks but won't start. Btw this is my first time ever being that far in an engine. And now I have something to give me hope again
Thank you for those kind words! I’d start by checking spark
@butlercustoms I'm gonna back through all of it. At last check we had strong spark. Everything but the case is new for the most part.. btw I'm sure you know this. But the connector is called a Deutsch connector. And they are available in kits online. (In case anyone reading this was wondering ). Recruiting my son to come over and help out. 😁Wish us luck and thanks again
That’s a good plan!
From a retired mechanic nice clean and simple video 5 Stars>😎👍✌️
Thank you for that very kind compliment and for watching and commenting!
It's always a super great learn !! Thanks, Kevin 🍁 :)
My pleasure my friend.
Thanks Kevin , You made that look easy Sir !! Enjoyed & learned at the same time. Belt Drive , thats where i found the master cylinder rebuild kit for my gma forward controls out in Cally . Ol Boy name Scott i think it was , very helpful & knowledgable .
Thank you for your kind words.
I'm on a Sportster ironhead, ive got some pics on my channel, but I'll stick around for a clutch replacement on a 5 speed, why not! Love Butlers. Im a fan for life!
Awesome! Much appreciated!
Great job as always
Hands down, the guy i watch the most if I'm working on a bike. I usually will look through his content and he's helped me fix my sporty a few times. I don't need to replace my 5 speed clutch at the moment, but watching these vids and supporting this channel is exactly what I'm gonna do. GOD BLESS YOU
Thanks for the great video. Very thorough. Would you please go into a little detail for me on the speeds sensor sensor? What does it do it do? How is it related to the other components you replaced… rotor, stator rectifier/ regulator? Many thanks! BA ‘06 Road King
The speed sensor is just for the speedometer. The crank position sensor is for the timing. Hope that helps.
Great video. Very thorough. Would you please tell me more about the speeds sensor? What does it do? How is related to the components you changed out like the rotor, stator, Rectifier/ regulator. Many thanks. BA 06 road king
Had a friend wrecked on a trike one rear wheel hit the curb goin around a curve and flipped it

Make sure the drain back holes are drilled all the way through> Had that happen once on a set of S&S heads and oil builds up in the top.

No. Rings and cylinders were in great shape!
Do you have footage ?
Merry Christmas brother to you and the family!
Thank you! And Merry Christmas to you and yours!
Do you use the OEM mount or aftermarket..........? Great video"
Great question. I believe this one was a Drag Specialties one.
Just found you and boy am I glad I've got a V65 but am in the UK mine has completely been stripped now having a replacement engine and frame as well so it's all in bits and I need to see how these things go together so getting a lot of info just from looking at the one your working on I've had it for a few years this is all gold dust to me many thanks for sharing on this one have to ask what manual have you used ? because I have found the Haynes one of limited use to be honest .👍
That’s great! Thanks for watching. I have the Honda service manual.
Were those adjustable push rods? Sure looked like it.
Yes they were.
I have a 2011 Road King. It only has 28k. How long do the tensioners usually last on the “newer” vtwins?
Great question. I would check the hydraulic ones every 40k. Thanks for watching.
Merry Christmas I'm looking forward to the New Year and visiting Tennessee again! Very best 🍁
Thanks and Happy Holidays to you too!
Hey man, I don’t have a twin cam, but I learned a lot. When you pulled that rear valve cover off just so easy I bout cried. Took me forever to pull the rear covers off my Evo when I changed the cam and shot lifters. I still don’t know how I did it
Evos are a lot harder. I will be doing an evo one next week!
Hey Kevin, I changed my tensioner shoes out on my 02 Duece last year. My engine had 22k on it and the shoes were shot. I used the Cyco pads. I also changed the two cam bearings out in the engine case. It was recommended due to the fact that HD cage bearings were prone to falling apart, so I decided to use caution and replace them. I did all work myself in my garage except for the inner shoe & bearings. I didn’t have a press nor a bearing puller. BTW, I love your videos.
Thanks for watching and for sharing your experience. It sounds like you did a lot of work and that's great that you found the Cyco pads helpful.

Is there any way to see the inner cam shoe tensioner by just pulling the outer cover on a '07 Softail I think I'd said his was an '06 but we couldn't see the inner cam shoe is there an easy way to look at it or do you have to pull the support plate. Thank you
Great question. There is no good way to inspect the inner shoe without pulling the cam plate assembly off. You can get a mirror or scope behind there but there is no way to raise the tension off the shoe in order to inspect under the shoe where it rides on the chain. From my experience, if the outer shoe looks bad then the inner shoe is always worse. Thanks.
@@butlercustoms Well I had a '09 FLH ultra I bought new back in '09 and that had the hydraulic tensioners and the shoes were literally gone at 48,000 now the inner shoe was gone. The outer shoe looked great The only reason that I caught it is when I pulled the cover at about 48,000. And I could see that the cam had a grainy look to the lobes now I really couldn't feel anything with my fingernail and I showed the pictures too the Harley shop I did buy the extended warranty I didn't buy it at that shop I bought the bike on eBay. Out of state. But I had bought the extended warranty of having heard things about the early twin cams. And I was lucky enough that when they pulled it apart it wasn't a few miles more it was almost down to the cup that holds the spring in place in the end I got a new oil pump cuz they were scoring but not from the shoes I don't know where they didn't know where the scoring came from. A new cam new shoes Pistons and rings I believe too at least it saved me like about 3 grand. In that repair. So I guess the hydraulic shoe design is better but you still got to keep an eye on it especially that inner one. That's why I went back to shovelheads lol and an Evo Softail.
@@MoeLarrycurly1 you are correct. All twin cams need to have their cam shoes inspected around every 30k-40k miles in my opinion. Thanks.
👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼🌲. I'm helping a friend put a 103 top end jugs Pistons used on his 06 Softail.. several years ago I put a carburetor on it for him because he took it to several Harley dealers and it never it would only like limp home mode something to that effect. I mean it wouldn't take any throttle. Backstory on it it was a bike that was in a fire a very very bad fire. Most of the wiring harness I was able to repair in the end I bought another used wiring harness just to maybe that was the problem it always had problems with its throttle position sensor map sensor all those kind of codes and two Harley dealers said just buy a new bike from us and we'll work on it this winter. That's what prompted me to say hey let's put a carburetor on it which we did and I'm used to carburetors is that pretty much all I have. Cuz I have a couple of shovelheads. And we put a standalone ignition module that judged were the motor was at through the crank position sensor and around fine. But he's already put a 103 on there and bought some used Pistons and jugs. So this ought to be interesting I enjoy your videos thank you very very much you also wanted to put a woods 555 or a 222 cam in it I told him let's put the jugs on first and then if he wants to do the other later we can.
That’s sounds like a great project for you guys, I bet it will be fun. Thanks for watching.
I never would wast time on these new harleys take the fiŕst3or 4 courses Harley has to offer for electronic Bikes and lèarn somthing if my other side would come Back to life. I would go S&S 124 in single cam a 67 or 69 low swing arm frame .
@ true
You should have change out the Bottom end them pistons you guyz got Rz they 60 over or higher put it on dino.computer test the ECM

I definitely feel like this is what I need for my bike 2000 roadking it has the worst time starting , I’m just on tht starter button for a good minute and back fires… previous owed says sat for while when he had surgery so I’m sure its all kinds of gummed up. I’m going to try to do this over the winter appreciate the info
Sounds like a good plan! Thanks for watching! I would also replace or at least test the crank position sensors as well. Sounds a little like a timing issue. Thanks again!
@ I seen another video of some one saying that same thing that the connection gets bad and it will cause an issue with starting as well as going bad besides the fuel system…im no mechanic and I’m not rich so these videos are life savers thanks you again for the info and we have long winters here in Cleveland Ohio so I’ll have the time 😅
Awesome! I hope all goes well and makes for a great riding season in 2025!
@ fingers crossed 🤞 i will let you know how it goes once i get crank sensor n clean it out 🫡
They are pretty cheap parts and simple to replace. Might be a good starting place before digging into the EFI. And your year model might have two of them.
Vic in Wyoming im doing my 89 tour glide doing 25 over an cams jetting full exhaust an chain conversion love watching your videos im, 71years old an love to ride now 51 years on 2 wheels
That's a great setup for your ride! You sound like you have a lot of riding experience.
Always a joy and more important a real down to earth no frills tutorial. Thank you from the other side of the big pond
Glad you enjoyed it!
Why is most people say to replace their head bolts/nuts cause their stretched ? But you reused them isnt that bad just curious learned more from cars and we always replaced them?
That’s a great question. Harley head bolts (actually long nuts) are not torqued to yield. Therefore they do not get stretched when torqued and usually don’t need to be replaced. If so you would have to replace the studs and nuts each time the heads were pulled. So they are different from car/truck heads which are usually torqued to yield (or stretched when torqued). Hope this helps.
Perfect timing this is on my list of winter projects thank you for posting!! Your how to videos are the best out there!
You are most welcome, thanks for watching!
