Welcome back to another Bike Comparison by Thrashin Supply. We have been getting a lot of questions about Early Model vs. Late Model Dyna's and how to decide which bike is best for you. Keep in mind while watching this video, there are more facts and specs between all the different models that we did not go over, be sure to double check the model you are looking into to make sure it has everything you want.(also note, we forgot there are a couple late model Dyna frames with different rake, we would suggest getting a Lowrider or a Street Bob.) Let's dive in!
    Early Model Twin-Cam Dynas: 1999-2004
    The early model Dynas are sought after for their nimble feel and carbureted soul. They feature;
    • Vibration-isolated Twin Cam 88" Engine
    • Carbureted
    • Five speed transmission
    • 39mm front suspension
    • 16" rear wheel 19" front
    • 28-degree steering head ( rake )
    • Excellent lean angle (34.5O left, 33.5O right)
    • Shorter wheelbase 63.3"
    • Aggressive, low-slung seating.
In 2002 an FXDX msrp was USD $13,895.
    Late model Twin-Cam Dyna: 2005-2017
The late model Dynas are also very popular among Harley enthusiast, especially after the "dyna" model was absorbed into the new softail platform.
    Their six speed transmission and fuel injection motor make them a great all around bike. They feature;
    • Rubber-mounted Twin Cam 96" Engine
    • Electronic Sequential Port Fuel Injection
    • Six speed transmission
    • 49mm front suspension
    • 17" rear wheel 19" front
    • 29-degree steering head ( rake )
    • Lean angle ( 31 Left, 30 Right )
    • Wheelbase 64.2"
The MSRP for a 2013 Streetbob was USD $13,199
No mater what model you choose a Dyna is great motorcycle for anyone from a beginner to an experienced Harley-Davidson rider. We hope that this video helped you out. For more bike checks and comparison. Check us out at

I, and a lot of my friends, feel that Harley Davidson made a mistake when they eliminated the Dyna from its product line. One of the best motorcycles they had ever manufactured. Everyone still raves about the FXR! I have rode Knuckleheads, own a Panhead, rode Shovelheads, own an Evo FXDS, 2014 Low Rider and a 2014 Street Glide. Loved them all but the Dynas are hard to beat.

I like my 03 FXD because it is a lot lighter than the later Dynas. I took a lot of stuff off, covers on stuff like the front wheel the starter rear foot pegs, run a lithium battery, Stainless Bassani exhaust Etc. Stainless motor mounts. I also like that it is a relatively short stroke vs the later engines. 4 in, stroke and almost 4 in bore for 95 in. Dark Horse crank, timken bearing, h beam rods, Mondello heads, Wood cams . It hauls ass

My dyna is a 2001 fxdwg wideglide. Came stock with 16” spoked rear wheel and 130 tyre and the front wheel being a 21”. Rake stock is 32 degrees. Nice review of the early Dyna models.
I did all my stunts, jumps, and wheelies on dirt bikes when I was young. Good times with my buddies!
I bought a 6 month old StreetGlide back in 2012 and still ride it. It's great for longer rides, it'll take me anywhere I want to go in comfort.
I'm an old man now and decided that I wanted a lighter, carbureated bike for short rides around town. I bought a super clean, stock, 2000 model FXDWG WideGlide with 22,000 miles on it. No more wheelies for me.

I've owned just about every iteration of Dyna H-D has ever made and hands down the 2000-2005 is by far the best Dyna range out there. When they made the frame bigger, the rear swing arm wider and put a mid glide front end on it... that ruined the handling and stability of that bike. Way more prone to wobbling! yes the earlier Dyna's had cam chain tensioner issues, but they're cheap fix and the run out on the earlier Dyna's are way better than the later years, especially if they were Timken bearing motors. I currently roll an '02 FXDX T-Sport and I'd rather ride that any day of the week over my late model Harleys.

Thats true but just as the cam tensioners is a easy fix, so is the wobbling on the late model dynas. Just install sputhe stabilizer links to both mounts and youre good to go.
So both models are great, its just a matter of preference. Ones lighter, ones heavier, ones skinnier, ones beefier.

The later bikes had bigger engines which might negate some of that "better gas mileage" from the six-speed. A carbureted bike it's not going to run much different when you change elevations unless it's an extreme change like going up a BIG mountain.
Most people who travel cross country on a carbureted bike including myself aren't going to notice any difference in tune with the different elevations. Yes, the cam chain issue must be addressed immediately when you purchase a twin cam 88. Dyna lowrider and Wide Glide have more rake than the rest.

01-02 Dyna are the best! They had the upgraded roller bearing on the drive cam on the cam plate. 99-00 had a ball bearing that had lots of failures. And the 01-02 still had the dual timken bearings on the crank shaft. They went to a roller bearing in 03 and it's just not as durable. So if you're gonna be high revving a Dyna for stunting you want an 01 or 02.

99-05 Dynas are the absolute best ones you can buy. Yes you do have to tinker and spend more to get it where it needs to be, but it handles and rides so much better than the late model dynas. The late models are way too wide, too heavy and raked out too far. Theres also quite a big weight difference. 620lbs vs 670 on the late models. The 6 speeds are also not a HUGE improvement over the 5 speeds. I have an 01 DX and it's the best Dyna by far. The Carb is stupid easy to work on and you don't have to pay the $450+ for the tuner like the late models. The 88" with cams and headwork is all you need. Its fast, punchy and just all around fun. Rides almost like a naked bike. If you end up with the DX, you get the fully adjustable suspension and it sits much higher so the cornering clearance is amazing. I can't tell you how many Bagger guys, dyna guys and sportster guys go ape shit over my bike. I have let a few ride it and they all have asked me if I would sell it. Even my brother was a die hard sport bike guy. He took the DX out for about 30 mins and came back with the biggest grin. He has since had 4 different harleys and is STILL looking for a DX. If you find a nice one with less than 20k miles for a reasonable price, jump on it.

I have a 99 FXDX I have converted to look like a t sport and a 09 fxd . Both bikes are great and have two different feels though . I have put in a lot more work into the 99 ....I don't need tools Haha i have 51,000 miles and she has only left me stranded once. When i am not on my glide there is no doubt I'm pulling out the FXDX.

My friend just picked up an 04 with 800 miles. All original. It’s 74 of 75 made for ford dealerships. He rode it on the hard ass 20 y/o tires and a truck pulled out in front of him and he dumped the bike at like 60mph. Bike had minor damage due to the crash bar saving it.

I'm doing what you're doing, using Dyna FXDX for local trips an I use my 88' GW for longer rides. I seem to be riding GW more an working more on the HD!? 88' are known for needing work on timing cam chain adjusters replacement, before tensioner pads break apart an destroy motor!

Dude, I just got a diamond in the rough. An older guy in my town, offered to sell me his 2006 dyna low rider about a year ago, I checked out the bike and it was clean but told him I wasn’t interested right now. About 9 months later I bump into him again, and offered to sell me the bike again. This time I go check over the bike and entertain his offer. Told me $5k and it was mine. I told him give me a little bit to grab the cash and he wanted to write up the paperwork for the sell. I couldn’t believe it, I had to make the deal. When I came back he had everything running on the bike and hook me up with a trailer to go with the bike too!! Dude said I know the deal I’m giving you I know what the bike’s worth. Long story short I made out with a steal. 2006 dyna low rider with 3500 miles
