The 2006 Harley-Davidson Dyna Models Escaped the Laboratory

  • The 2006 Harley-Davidson Dyna line is one of the strangest years of Dyna's Harley-Davidson ever produced. Harley-Davidson broke all the rules and almost completely updated a model line before the touring line. The 2006 Dyna models are truly unique as they retained the Twin Cam 88 but received the 6 speed Cruise Drive transmission. Now if you're the owner of a 2006 Dyna and you want to find some performance parts, let's just say it can be interesting as it seems like nothing fits your 2006 model Dyna. Well you're not crazy, your motorcycle isn't junk, it's just misunderstood. The 2006 Dyna may have a Twin Cam 88, but this Twin Cam 88 is nothing like the 1999 to 2005 design or like the engine in anything else outside the Dyna line for 2006.

      You could go to the stealership and order the kit, or send them to a reputable shop like hammer performance, for example. They can punch them out to a 95. They also have kits. I'm sending mine to my indy shop this winter and ill be running the screaming eagle flat top cast pistons. Hope this helps.@jasontackett4836

    It was just dumb luck that led me to purchase my ‘06 FXDWGI last year and I would never have realized all the differences it has compared to earlier 88s without listening to you GixxerFoo. I liked its looks and the fact that it was fuel injected, but I wasn’t aware of the cam chain tensioner problems with the earlier TC 88s or that the ‘06 Dyna had hydraulic tensioners. This just reinforces the old adage that even a blind squirrel finds an acorn every now and then.

    I know, opinions vary but the dyna platform in my opinion had its best years around this era. So much that I sought out to find my bike, a 2007 Dyna Lowrider. I was patient, it took me a year to find but I got a pacific blue pearl Lowrider with the 96 twin cam with the blue and silver winged tank emblems. Exactly what I wanted. Something about that time was just awesome to me, Harley’s just felt different up to around 2014.

    I like the carbed Twin Cams actually over the fuel injection. I think it sounds better because you have that more lopey, choppy idle, and it is possible to get a little more hp in the carbed Twin Cams than the Fuel Injection. Fuel Injection I know its smooter no flat spots, etc though. Nothing beats the sound of a built, Twin Cam motor, with a lopey cam, a well tuned carb, and the right set of pipes!

    I currently have a 2006 ultra classic. Went from a 96 to a 110 with cams. I really hate that little narrow ass tire in the back compared to my 2013 streetglide the frame is not as solid as newer models after it. But boy does it vibrate like a old school Harley.

    • @Hoprgras
      @Hoprgras Год назад +3

      Yeah, the bigger tire is more attractive, but Harley riding Cops preferred the older Road Kings more than the newer ones. The skinner tire made it turn with lesser lean angles. Making it more agile for those chases!

    The only differences between the 2006 dyna 88 and the 2007 dyna 96 are the crank (as you mentioned) but also the pistons. The pistons have the pins in a different location to allow for the shorter crank throw geometry. The 2006 dyna has the same pistons as the earlier 88. The pistons have different part numbers.

    • @GixxerFoo

    GixerFoo, I asked this in a comment on another one of your videos but I’ll repeat it here. What is the horsepower and/or torque limit for the stock Harley belt final drive on my ‘06 FXDWGI? Also, could you say something about the S&S Easy Start cams? I’ve been watching too many of your videos and have gotten the upgrade fever that I intend to satisfy with about a $3.5k investment right after the riding season next winter and I just want to make sure that the belt drive doesn’t become the weakest component.
