Thank you kindly m’lord! Yep, it really was! 😂😅🎣 Yet it was complete slack that did the trick, which was a good reminder to me that brute force isn’t always the answer! I’ve just had a cracking few days on the Trent so look out for more barbel action soon… Still loving your videos, too, and thanks for more kind words 🤗 Shame verve gone from not enough rain to too bloody much rain this week!
Couldn’t agree more. I was SO chuffed not to blank and really thought I’d missed my chance when it all went solid 😅🎣🐟🙏 The fishing gods came through for me in the end 😃

Ahhhh, GREAT to hear from you as always, Graham! Thank you 🙏 I’ve just enjoyed three phenomenal days on the Trent so look out for plenty more action packed (yet hopefully still calming) content soon 💙🎣🐟
Another great love the commentary u give. Great method shown to me by my dad at the old mill aldermarston where i caughy my 1st ever barbel . Thanks for the memory
My pleasure as always, Gary. I can’t imagine how exciting (as well as effective) that must have been as a lad! I only came across it as a young man and didn’t use it too much for a while after that. But I really enjoyed trying all those different spots and will no doubt give it more goes in the future 🎣
What strength that fish had John ,I thought you was going to beat your PB there mate,at least you will have some spam left for your next session ,well worth it in the end mate, certainly made the trip worthwhile ,
Cheers Paul! They don’t half pull do they?! I’ve only started trying for and catching barbel in the last 4-5 year and every single one blows my mind, from the smallest example I had on the opening day of the season (a baby of a few ounces), to the better fish I’ve managed since. Talking of PBs, please look out for the new couple of vids from TMOF, as I recently enjoyed a phenomenal three-day trip the tidal Trent! Let’s just say some personal bests (plural!) got beaten 🤯🤩🎣🐟😊
Bob, I was exactly the same until around 4-5 years ago when I got some great advice from a local bailiff who is now a mate. They were a mythical fish to me. But the main things are conditions and timing - either high, coloured water for daylight fishing, or evenings and darkness when the water is clear and low. Plus keep it simple and strong. If they are in the mood they are in the mood and will take pellets, meat, maggots, worms, etc, etc. It’s only during daylight hours and low water when you might need a bit of finesse to trip one up. Keep on roving ✊😎🎣
Hi John. Really well deserved on that last cast, its times like them that makes us love fishing. Im originally from the same area and the rivers in the area are on my to do list!
Many thanks, Tom (hoping I’ve got the name right from your YT username)! That looks like a mega barbel you’re holding too 🤩 I completely agree it’s times like that last gasp fish on rolling meat - AND saved from a snag - that fuels the fire and keeps us persevering on subsequent trips that might be equally quiet to begin with. Thanks for taking the time to comment and you’re welcome back anytime 🤗 P.S. If you love your barbel, watch out for the next couple of TMOF vids… 🐟🐟🐟
@@themagicoffishing its my PB Barbel of 16lb, it was a right place right time catch! Its nearly been 1 year since catching it and ill be going back to the same spot to do a video. Absolutely agree with you John, especially saving it from a snag, theres no better feeling! Ill definitely be watching out for your upcoming videos as i really enjoy them. Cheers 👍🏻
Some days the Fishing gods are with us and make those days extra special!! I've just finished your book and for anyone else who hasn't read John's book, I seriously urge you to get it for an incredible read.. So many moments in the book that I could personally relate to as well and a credit to you John for the superb way you brought the chapters together. Hopefully you might be able to get back to Moorwood Lane and relive the first adventures!? Until then, have a great weekend and look forward to your next adventure Cheers Paul.
Paul, that is an incredibly meaningful and welcome comment 💙 Really glad you’ve enjoyed the book and thank you for the kind words of encouragement to others! 🙏😊📘 Do you know what, I actually did return to Moorwood Lane about two years ago, with my dad, around a year after we lost Mum. And I have a draft chapter about it in a second tome - but don’t get too excited as it’s one of only about four rough chapters and, since I added YouTubing to family life and work, I never get chance to get anywhere near it! But it was a moving trip and it seemed even smaller than I remembered it! Unfortunately, although there is a public footpath that runs beside it and up into the small wood, the pond is now owned by an impressive private property that has been created from over the abandoned farm house that I describe in those early chapters. So no more fishing, officially at least, and they have even put a duck house in the shallow end! But I’ve not tried asking for special permission to maybe have one afternoon back on there, so that could be something for me to keep on my ever growing fishing hit list 🤔 Cheers for now 🍻
I was just about to go and get some bait, and oh there you are, so will watch this, im off to coombs lake tomorrow yes im out hooray, a plan of action, and a full day, so good to see you John, always so interesting, but its rained all day today, non stop, so the lake is calling, to planes of attack. Your channel as just so nataual, and real, so massive thanks mate, all the best..Clive.
Wow, well done John your perseverance paying off at last. That’s one of my favourite ways to fish, all alone with only my thoughts and the sound of running water beneath my feet. A very exciting way to fish, not knowing when the next bite will come. Look forward to your videos buddy keep them coming, and stay well. 🎣👍
Thanks for taking the time to leave a lovely comment as always, mate 🙏 You know they fuel my 🔥 to keep going and agree that is one hell of an exciting way to fish. Really glad I gave it another go 🎣🐟👍
That was exciting and whilst loosening off the line (in theory) can work, I think the fishing Gods were smiling down on you that time. Keep up the good work.
Very much so! It can often work if you have a feeder or lead that might be snagged - let the fish have some slack to pull the rig free - but I was clearly fishing without either and I was gobsmacked when it went from completely solid (for a good couple of minutes!) to ‘fish on’ again 🎉🎣
Thanks Andy 🤗 I wish you tight lines as I believe you might be heading to the bank this weekend 🎣🐟 Finally a bit of sunshine and bright skies although the cool overnight temperatures won’t help. Fishing can be brilliant or tricky at this time of year. No doubt you’ll be using one of your brilliant floats 👌
Glad you enjoyed it and thanks as always for taking the time to comment, Pat 💙 It really does mean a lot and helps keep me going. Look out for a video next weekend that will feature even more hard-fighting barbel, after I recently made a return to my beloved River Trent… 🎣🐟🐟🐟🐟

Hi John, hope all is well with you& family. Pagey & me did our first session on frog island Tuesday. There was a copy of your book in the shop. The owner was great to talk to.He had 5 lovely carp, I bagged up on some quality Roach and Perch, also what I thought was a tench turned out to be an escaped rainbow trout, only about a pound or so but did it battle. That wharf you showed on film, was that near Wisley? I used to look after a large garden there & have my lunch by the river, beautiful spot. All the best , thanks for another great watch.🐟🪱🎣👍
Smiffy! Good to hear from you as always and I’m glad you enjoyed Frog Island. Jerry is a top bloke and a real character. He is also a top, top angler and used to fish semi-professionally for Daiwa Dorking. I think there could be a good video interview with him but I’ve not got round to it yet… Yes, I was fishing over Wisley way 👍🎣
That snake was a large one, could not make out if it was a grass snake, looked like it, or was it an adder, many years ago I was fishing a small river in summer, just kneeling down, trotting a large worm on the methord your useing here, and a grass snake just slithered across my hand...a magic moment, plus a nice 2lb Chub before going off to work, The Magic Of Fishing. mate.
Male grass snake, nice white arrow head. If you get chance to handle one they will leave a stinking musky gel that you won't wash off for a fortnight. Great battle with the barbel that John.
@cliveeariss880 Adders rarely venture into water, grass snakes love small fish, tadpoles & larvae of water born insects, dragonflies etc. One of the Basingstoke canal rangers saw a grass snake become pike fodder, loved to have seen that one.

Thanks for another cracking video John. Yeah rolling meat I remember as a kid using that method to great effect. I’ve been busy over the last few weeks, watching your back catalogue of videos, absolutely fantastic. I have a question for you When are you going to have a bash at catching catfish? That will be an awesome watch. Thanks for the hard work and effort you put in to make top notch viewing. Tight lines matey 🎣🎣🎣
Flippineck, that’s the kind of thoughtful and very kind comment that keeps my 🔥 stoked to make the next one 🎣🐟🙏 It really is appreciated and I’m glad you’ve enjoyed some of the ‘older’ stuff on this channel too. Means a lot as I occasionally think that it’s such a shame there’s a year or more of fishing action on here that some people may never see, who are new to the channel. Thanks for taking the time to catch up. It’s funny you talk about catfish coz I’ve never had one (or not a proper one) and one of the clubs I belong to in Woking has a renowned carp and cat lake... They kinda scare me a bit, but that’s got to be a good thing?! Face your fears and all that 😱 🎣 And I’ve recently met a young lad who is in the same club and seems pretty damn good at catching them! However, I may have missed the boat this year - now it’s getting colder - but that doesn’t mean I won’t take up the challenge at some point in 2025… I even spoke to a fellow member who told me that he’d had one on a super strong centrepin setup 🤯 🐈⬛🐟 Watch out for the next couple of vids as I’ve just enjoyed a phenomenal trip to the tidal Trent 🐟🐟🐟🐟
Well done John my favorite method. I think you need to upgrade your rod to a higher test curve maybe 2lb? Just a thought. I have a Harrison chimera barbel rod and it’s perfect for that type of fishing.
Thanks mate 🙏 Yes, I was using my 2.25 TC old carp rods on the Thames not so long ago and know you sometimes do need that extra ooomph with barbel, especially around snags. I just love the manoeuvrability of that Avon style rod as it’s a little shorter than most. Hasn’t let me down yet, although that was a close call 😅
Yet another interesting video, well done. It's good to see someone using fairly simple tackle. I often wonder when I go into a large tackle shop and see the vast array of different groundbaits, boilies, expensive rods, very expensive poles and a mass of multi-coloured floats. Are these designed to catch anglers or fish? Does a fish know that you're holding a £2,000 pole or a cheap rod? What did fish used to eat before boilies, wafters and sweet corn came along? Just a thought. Again, nice video and proves that patience pays off.
Thanks as always, John, glad you enjoyed it. I think we’ve made some massive strides in the quality of gear over the past few decades, certainly where the weight and responsiveness of rods are concerted, and the diameter and strength of line for example, but you’re right that there is so MUCH of it now and one thing that hasn’t changed a bit over the years is the fish! You definitely don’t need mountains of gear to catch them and it was getting back to basics - fishing for bites from anything with baits like worms on my local River Wey and some of the club lakes - that reawakened the true magic for me. That was the inspiration behind the book of course. Thanks for continuing to watch and taking the time to leave us your thoughts 🙏💙🎣🐟
I fish that stretch, rolling meat, and slowly working it out. Do i watch the film? Sure, I will catch more fish, but will I get the same satisfaction ?
