A great video Dan! As a newcomer to barbel fishing, I took some comfort from seeing you using the same stick float, meat, & hemp tactics that I have so far tried. Although my first barbel still eludes me, I'm enjoying the chase! What I have picked up from watching you, was holding the rod high and keeping the line clear of the water. It dawned on me that this is much better than leaving the line to float on the surface where varying flows between rod and float will push it into all sorts of strange shapes and lessen your contact! I promptly subscribed and am looking forward to watching more of your content... Thanks & tight lines. Chris.
Enjoyed that it was a nice watch although defo pushing it a bit with the hooklength choice. That Drennan float fish is designed to be buoyant to lay on the surface as a mainline, once you put a knot in it it becomes less than 5lb breaking strain, big Barbel plus the current is snapping that like its nothing. Maybe consider going 6lb or 6.5lb breaking strain with a hooklength material like Drennan supplex for example. Nice video though bud we live and learn, banking 2 out the 3 on that setup weren't bad going at all.
Remember I had this Drennan float line before. I'd never used it as a reel line let alone as a hook length for barbel. It was so week for the diameter in comparison to other lines that it ended up in the bin. Hook length line for trotting for barbel don't need to be supple either. Any line designed for hook lengths will be better than this.
As soon as I heard you say "5lb hooklength" I thought that if you catch a barbel of any reasonable size you are either going to play the fish almost to death, or get snapped off. Lo and behold; another barbel with a hook left in its mouth.
As disappointing as that is, I’ve only lost 2 hooks to broken hook links this season, this being one and the other…I was fortunate enough to catch the fish that took it an hour later and retrieve it. Sounds light 5lb but balanced with the right rod it works perfectly.
It's trying to find a happy medium with hooklengths I've seen damage done to barbel with over gunned gear and barbed hooks and removed hooks attached to line far bigger than 5lb also swim choice is optimum when choosing hook length size ie snaggy or snag free in 40yrs fishing for these powerful fish from a wide verity of rivers I've very rearly lost a fish due to a hooklength breaking and I've used 5lb to 12lb. hooklengths hooklengths

@@outandaboutangling Sorry, but not sure how snapped hook links and hooks left in fish is an indication of everything working perfectly.
@@godlessthefree2880it’s never ideal losing a hook, but regardless of these points, the session delivered the results I went for, enjoy your fishing

Clearly a comment from an angler with no knowledge of fishing! Having a balanced set up, which this guy has, is how anglers should fish.
That can’t be 1day ago
No video was filmed few weeks back in September
