Big Weir Barbel - Specimen Series - Barbel Fishing

- Опубликовано: 5 фев 2025
- As Autumn sets in, there is no better time of year to catch a large barbel and for this edition of Specimen Series, Phil is back on the River Trent targeting the powerful Gunthorpe Weir section in pursuit of one of the massive barbel that reside in the stretch, which have been landed to nearly 20lb!
Can he do it and put a double figure fish on the bank for the ADTV cameras? Follow him throughout the session, and see how Phil tackles these conditions from set up, to baits and feeding, so you can hopefully go out and catch yourself a new PB barbel!

Enjoyed this one mate. The highs and the lows. Some beautiful fish caught there mate. Persistence payed off! 💪🏻🎣💥
I wouldn't want it any other way Kenny 😊 The special captures are more special if extra effort is required.
Glad you enjoyed the video 😊

Phil,
@AnglingDirectTV Phil, can't agree more mate. The rods looked like they held up too. I've a couple of the 2Lb ones (older model), and I can't fault them to be honest. 👍🏻
Good session Phil and nicely told
Thank you Martin 😊 I appreciate the kind comment 👌
Regards
Phil,
Good session Phil, and lovely 14lb Barbel. I'm giving the Barbel a break at the moment, enjoying Pike fishing on the Trent. Tight lines mate

Super watch & superb fish Phil. I got a bit twitchy though when you were passing your rod around that pile.
Thank you Rich 😊 Don't panic......I had everything under control 🤣
Regards
Phil,
very good and informative, just a quick question if I may how was Phil securing the spam to the hair.👍🎣🎣🎣
Hi Mark,
I use the Korum pellet stops, they are perfect for hair rigging meat as the pull into the bait 👌

Phil,
Instead of a loop to loop connecting the fluorocarbon to the braid could you use a quickchange swivel in maybe stop bead instead? Or are you loop to looping so it remains quite inconspicuous?
Hello Jason,
I feel a loop to loop connection is simple and strong and like you said inconspicuous. I've seen anglers connect to end section via an Albright knot that is perhaps neater still, but with how often my hook point gets damaged I like the speed of the loop to loop 👌
Hope this makes sense?
Regards
Phil
Hi Phil, great video, but the one thing I would say I think all anglers should be using biodegradable stops now. Plastic as we all know isn't great. I have been using spaghetti.
Glad you enjoyed the video Martin 😊 I've never really thought about biodegradable stops before? Although I will say those pellet stops I like to use rarely ever fall off the hair even if the bait comes off.

Phil,
Hi Phil, where else do you fish for barbel. Have you ever fished in the kent area for barbel also??
Hi Darren,
Barbel fishing is fairly limited for me in recent years as I live on the Norfolk/Suffolk border. The closest river for barbel fishing is probably the Trent now, and that is over 100 miles away.
I enjoyed some challenging, yet very rewarding barbel fishing on the Wensum in Norfolk before the barbel all disappeared. Otherwise I caught barbel from the river Severn and Wye. I have a ticket on the famous Kings Weir fishing on the river Lea, but finding time to fish the venue has been a big problem.
I've not been down to Kent...yet 😉
Regards
Phil,
Not bad for a beginner 😬
I'm slowly getting the hang of it Charlie 🎣😉
Regards
Phil,
Could you let me know what tripod you were using please, is it the Korum one?
That's correct, Phil was using the Korum River Tripod during this session... www.anglingdirect.co.uk/korum-river-tripod
Great angling Phil. Can I ask what braid you use for the combi hooklength?
Hello Mr Tim,
I've been using two different braids this season. I'll pop the links below ⬇️ Both have done the job well👌

Phil,
Wear a crotch strap with your life jacket - it could save your life
Agreed! When I saw the mega high conditions I thought a life jacket was a good idea. I don't normally wear one when bank fishing, but it looked quite intimidating 🌊
Regards
Phil,
@ people tend to remove them as they “get in the way”, but it literally could save your life for the sake of a minor inconvenience. Great vid and fishing 👍
Come on phill
Where are we going? 😉
Regards
Phil 🤣
I fish the streàch past the gate and I had a 14.5
Caught my first barbel at that venue 10 pound belter
Well done Lee, certainly a great stretch for big barbel 👌
Well done Phil….great session. On another subject, you know the young lady that does your AD short vids, think her name is Amanda, is she any relation to you. If not she bears an uncanny resemblance to you ???
Yep that's Amanda, no relation! She's just very fortunate to share my amazing good looks 🤣
Regards
Phil 😉
What are the bite alarms used?
Phil was using Delkim TXi-d alarms.

I have to admit - never interested in barbel fishing 🎣 But soon as i start watching this guy pike barbel perch maybe chub looks like im being interested in everything it’s a bit boring just carp since i was 8 years old now im 24 need change a bit
Glad I've helped you discover there's more to fishing than just carp 😊 Good luck!

Phil,
