I tried a few tests using multiple domains but I was still running into some issues, I ran out of time to do more testing on this project but I want to have another go at combining domains in the future.
Yes 100% blender. Unfortunately I can't explain the entire process here but I hope to make some kind of tutorial in the future. Short version is, I created a particle system emitting from the back of the missile model, created a massive smoke domain and then duplicated the missiles around the scene, then moved the start frame of each missile to give some randomization as they pass the camera.
I have been lucky enough to get my hands on some awesome hardware so it wasn't too bad actually. Each sim was around 30-45min and about 2-3 hours of render time per shot.

you need to have more divisions with adpaptive domain, may shit out your thing but turn the margin up or down to fix it

Yep! All cycles and I think the render was around 6 or 7 hours in total.
