    Amen to the strong wind comment! Just about had my Mavic Mini get blown from Nevada into Idaho a couple days ago. Battery ran out and it performed an emergency landing way out in a rugged area. I was very lucky to retrieve it!! One hint, I would suggest keeping a sharp eye on the horizontal distance readout...if it starts changing on its own, the wind is taking your drone and you need to get it down ASAP!

      @@keith-knittel Not sure. I was flying it close to a nearby mountain. Probably some wind blowing over the top. I quite often get the STRONG WIND LAND IMMEDIATELY warning but it had always seemed like the drone was just being overcautious. Well not this time! Then I got the maximum power reached notification and the battery didn't last long after that. I had to wander around in a frozen field full of sagebrush snow and mud and cow crap for about 20 minutes before I could locate it. Ever since then I have kept my eye glued to the horizontal distance readout if the wind warning comes up!

    Great video. Thanks for tips. About landing pad - I realised I needed one after my very first flight few weeks ago and then I gave it another thought - pad would be a thing I would need to carry around everywhere, so... did a little research about launching and landing mini with hand, so my absolutely second ever flight with drone I did launch it from my hand and landed it into my hand without any issues (research on how to do it really needed, as it was not obvious for me as for totally fresh pilot - sensors below and hand position had to be taken into consideration). Since my second flight I always use my hand - never had issues (I’m currently at my approx 20-30th flight)

    • @keith-knittel
      @keith-knittel  4 года назад +1

      Big fan of catch landings and take offs - but didn’t want to mention it in this video since the mavic mini is for beginners. You most definitely can hand takeoff / land (in some cases you have to, on boats) - I should make a separate video about hand takes offs and landings. There is a bit more to think about and safety is something you have to take much more seriously when doing this because the drone could be at eye level and close to your body if your not careful. Done properly, you won’t have to have a landing pad with you and you’ll keep your drone clean as well. Thanks for pointing that out justas !

    The prop screws (both the pre-installed screws and the replacement screws) are coated in loctite, which prevents loosening from vibration. I do bike maintenance, and I've never seen a loctite coated screw come loose without using a screwdriver to get it out. Yes, make sure they are snug BUT do not.... not, not, not... over tighten those bad boys, and do not re-use the old screws unless you have loctite and reapply it. If you get replacement props, the new screws should have fresh loctite on them (colored substance on the threads of the screw). Trust the loctite. It works well, but not if the threads are stripped. Snug 'em down and they'll be fine.

    • @keith-knittel
      @keith-knittel  4 года назад +1

      Very true! Over tightening them will strip out the screws, just making sure people are aware that these screw on. Other dji drones have a quick release attachment that don’t use screws - that’s what I meant by saying that. Thanks for the good tip, commenting and watching!

    1:50 FYI there's no such "mode" on the mini like other drones. You cannot turn the downward sensors off.

    • @keith-knittel
      @keith-knittel  4 года назад +3

      Hey there Shane, the Mavic Mini has 3 different modes - Standard, CineSmooth and Sport! You can access them in the DJI Fly app! Sport mode turns the downward sensors off. Not sure about Cinesmooth, as that has a longer stopping distance and don't like using it while flying close to objects.
      Edit: Just found out you can't "turn off" the downward sensors using sport mode - the hack to turn them off seems to be putting tape on the bottom of your drone to cover the sensors and fly in ATTI mode (manual control) thought that it was turning off the sensors but I was flying too fast by objects that were too small (tree branches) to activate the sensors.

    • @keith-knittel
      @keith-knittel  4 года назад +1

      Although, using sport mode isn't much better than cinesmooth for flying close to objects because the drone is more sensitive to the controller inputs. I just fly slowly in sport mode and be very careful! Thanks for watching!

    • @keith-knittel
      @keith-knittel  4 года назад

      I originally thought that Sport Mode would turn off the downward sensors, but it turns out I was flying too quickly in Sport mode for the sensors to engage - a more reliable way to turn off the sensors is to tape them so they can't be used. Minimizing interference is a whole lesson on it's own, but the gist of it is stay away from large metal objects, power lines, towers, etc. Always changing both props is a best practice, but some users may not read the manual before replacing the props - thought it would be worth mentioning. If you start the drone before gaining proper satellite signal, the home point may not be updated. Usually people give their drones a second to power on, but i've seen people power the drone on and just take off immediately so it's something I mention! Since the Mavic Mini is a drone aimed at beginners, I made this video aimed towards beginners so some of these tips may be obvious to more advanced drone pilots, but beginners can get up and running quickly. Good video, don't agree with the point of getting close to things (if new to flying drones) take it to an open area and get used to the drones controls first. Stay away from trees until you know what you're doing. Great drone though, I've found it very easy to pilot and it's size shouldn't fool people into thinking this is a toy drone.

    • @keith-knittel
      @keith-knittel  4 года назад

      Definitely agree with you Stephen! New pilots should definitely gain confidence and fly in open areas and only fly close once they are comfortable and know the limits of their drones! It’s size is deceiving and it can deliver pretty good results! Thanks for watching and sharing your thoughts

      Love hand take offs and landings with this drone, it’s an advanced thing to do however, so I left it out of this video. This video is aimed towards beginners, and that is something that’s difficult to do and risky safety-wise for beginners. But I hand catch my drone if I’m able to every time! Take off I usually do from the ground due to the weird grip you have to have on your controller to take off. Don’t want to risk dropping my phone in the controller if I don’t have to. Thanks for the kind words and watching!

    I have noticed birds swarm around my mini continually and it concerns me. I heard if something hits a prop then it will just stop, is this correct and is there any way to reduce the threat of being hit by birds?

    • @keith-knittel
      @keith-knittel  4 года назад +1

      Hey there - can confirm that if you hit something, the props will NOT stop. If the drone flips up-side-down, the props will stop though. I've flown around birds quite a bit (I live my Lake Erie) and for the most part, if you're afraid - fly above them. For example if you're trying to fly to a spot to film but birds are between - flying higher isn't much of a problem. Flying in a location with birds, use your best judgement there. Gulls are pretty relaxed and don't bother the drone. Larger birds may be a different story. Smaller birds like robins and blue jays typically don't fly anywhere near the drone since they are afraid of it. Thanks for asking such a great question and watching my videos!

    • @keith-knittel

      Hey there John, to use the LUTs, load them into your video editing software (in premiere pro, this is done through loading them on lumetri color or adding them to your “creative” LUTs folder) and you can select which lut you’d like to use. If you have a different video editor, google “how to import LUTs in ... ”. • @keith-knittel
      @keith-knittel  4 года назад +2

      If you set the home point before taking off, and lose connection or press the return to home button the drone will return back to the RTH point. It's pretty cool! Try it in an open area next time you're out to see how it works. It's a great feature.

    • @keith-knittel
      @keith-knittel  4 года назад

      Hey there, if you're flying indoors you don't really need to depend on the return to home point, since if your drone loses connection, it's probably still within 10-100 feet so you can just land the drone - you probably don't want to use return to home indoors.

  • @ohyeahyeah1711

    Hello, i calibrated my dji mavic mini outside, the imu and compass. It said all complete. So im guessing its done. When i fly it indoors i get 6-10bars of connection. Is that normal for flying indoors or is it not normal?

    • @keith-knittel
      @keith-knittel  4 года назад

      You still should be able to get over 10+ satellite connections whether you're flying indoors or outdoors - you may need to wait a little bit before flying. Having a strong satellite connection is more important when flying outside with return to home though. Indoors you probably don't want/need to enable RTH

      Yeah - ideally the compass / imu would be down outside before flying but I was only able to film indoors for those videos. If you’re experiencing calibration errors and imu errors after calibrating outdoors - contact dji and get a replacement. That should definitely not be happening.

    Is there any way to turn off the downward sensors on the mini?

    • @keith-knittel
      @keith-knittel  4 года назад +1

      Sport mode turns off the sensors, but makes your drone more sensitive to your controls and increases the top speed
      EDIT: Sport mode does not turn off the sensors - I only experienced that because I was flying too quickly / by objects that were too small to be detected (tree branches). Thanks to Jeroen for pointing that out! As of right now, taping off the sensors will disable them and force the drone into attitude mode. Interesting "hack" but it works!

    • @JeroenS935
      @JeroenS935 4 года назад

      Not true. Sportmode does not turn off the downward sensors on the mavic mini, like it does on other drones made by DJI. There is no official way to turn them off, some people say you can put some tape over the sensor, then the mini will behave like the sensor is off.
      Watch FlytPath his video about this, it’s a really good one.
      Edit: his video is called “attitude mode hack for DJI Mavic Mini’ (yeah attitude, not altitude 🧐)

      @@JeroenS935 Hey Jeroen - I'll have to check this out, I turned was flying close to objects in sport mode and didn't have any 'rise' from the downward sensors, maybe it's because I was going faster and they didn't 'sense' the object below? EDIT: Just checked out that video - Interesting! I guess I'll be using tape during my flights to turn off sensors now - I hope this gets fixed in the DJI Fly app and we can choose to just turn the sensors off manually. Thank you for pointing this out! I guess I was flying too fast by objects that were too small (tree branches) for the sensors to detect them when I was in sport mode flying.

    I don't like your color edits, after your changes it just looks unnatural to me. Maybe it's my monitor, but it looked fine to me straight off of the mini. For example at 5:15

    • @keith-knittel

      That's totally fine! The color grade you're referring to is the "washed out" LUT I made that is VERY strong, it can be really overpowering but if you dial back the intensity of the LUT in your editor it can produce some neat results if you're into that kind of look. I wanted to make a stronger lut to show how "far" the footage can be pushed as well. Usually applying a heavy color grade to footage will make it fall apart. All footage falls apart at some point, but usually cheaper cameras fall apart and show aliasing very soon (especially in low light). It's definitely okay to have opinions on color grading, and I prefer natural-looking colors when it comes to professional shoots, but with this youtube channel, I have the chance to push my footage to the limit and get creative. Sometimes it's great, other times - not so great. That's the beauty of experimenting! There are other LUTs in the package that are more "natural"-looking. Thanks for commenting!

    So I’m getting like 6 bars outside I’m my back yard with many houses around me, with weak signal and what I do is back up and wait for 3-5minutes and it just slowly gets signal and gets 10 bars. Is this normal?

      In congested areas, that is typical.

      @@ohyeahyeah1711 In a congested area, that would be normal. Hard to say, as I'm not sure where you are or what you're around. I wouldn't be worried as long as youre able to connect to 10+ satellites though. Has your drone become steadier after re-calibrating?

    Hello, i bought the mavic mini and from my house to park i lost connection. 2000 feet away. I clicked return to home before it losing connection so i thought it would just come home. But it keeps beeping and takes like a full 30 seconds to get signal back and i was now like 1100 feet. Is this a issue or is it normal? Any reccomendations for me because ill be flying really far away? Thanks.

    • @keith-knittel
      @keith-knittel  4 года назад

      While the drone is returning to home, the remote controller will beep. If you're flying in an area with a lot of interference this could happen. Make sure you're pointing the antennas in the direction of the drone when flying far distances as well

    • @ohyeahyeah1711

      Aerial Guide so is it possible the drone doesn’t return to home and loses connection and just stays there and falls or something?

      @@ohyeahyeah1711 If the home point is properly set, the drone should return to home. I'd give it a try to see how it works and get familiar with the process if you need to use it.

      @@keith-knittel DO NOT POINT THE ANTENNAS TOWARDS THE DRONE !!

      @@vhsopdvd I would 100% point the antennas towards the drone. By "pointing towards the drone" I mean flying the drone and pointing the remote in the direction the drone is flying, not flying with the drone to your back or side. To ensure the strongest connection you should be pointing the antennas towards the drone. I'm assuming you know how to orient the antennas on the remote to point towards the drone. Page 29 is helpful if you do not understand how to position the antennas.

    sir what is LUT?

    • @keith-knittel
      @keith-knittel  4 года назад

      Hey there Dexter, LUT stands for Look Up Table, and its a file that contains information about color values that your video editor can use, and create a certain "look" to your footage! They are pretty handy for creating easily repeatable 'looks' to your footage. For example, I made a LUT for my talking head shot that I can apply to my footage and get the same, consistent look for each of my videos! Hope that helped, thanks for watching and commenting.
