The Spark, the predecessor to the mini has active tracking during the quickshot modes and offers several additional quickshot modes not available on the mini. Of course, it's major drawback is the 10 minute flight time and the 1080p limit on video (it also weighs more than 250 grams) but I still use my spark to this day because despite the lower resolution, the camera color accuracy is better on the spark, the tracking is far better, and I love the additional lighting the spark offers that is not on the mini. Oh, and if you want waypoint flights? There are alternative apps that can do just that, although, again, with the limited 10 minute flight time, is not all that useful.

Okay guys I need your brains. What do you call the shadowy ghosting artifacts that we see at one 1:40 seconds and at 5:31 seconds? And did you blur or fuzz any of those out Rusty or did they already look like that? I’ve had them in some of my videos and I know it’s some kind of lens distortion due to the drone’s shadow but I’ve seen it cause shadow and bright spots and I’m just not sure what it’s called. Please educate me! 🤷♂️😊
@@51Drones Not sure if this helps. There are a few potential causes to the macroblocking you see. They are compression artifacts that are most likely a result of a bitrate being too low to display complex images moving in a frame. The problem could be introduced when the image is recorded, when it is resized, or, more likely, when recompressed. The artifacts can be introduced by your editing software, your encoding software, but most often your distribution software... RUclips. You see it in things like fluttering aspen leaves in a breeze, a low fast pass over waving grass, or in this case, a fallow wheat field moving laterally across the frame. You need a ton of data to display complex frames like that, as opposed to something like slow moving mountains on a horizon. When recorded, the original data rate was probably satisfactory to properly display the image so you wouldn't notice it. You can see this sort of artifacting most often when you uprez the image (say, 2K to 4K) in applications like Premiere and FCP. I think it is because the editing software starts creating "in-between" pixels to compensate for the larger canvas. It does not simply stretch the image, it tries its best to approximate what pixels would have been present if it were originally recorded in UHD. It can also be introduced if you are dropping or adding frames because of a mismatched frame rate... say shooting 30fps and editing and delivering in 24. The artifacts would be hard to see in the editor, but once uploaded RUclips applies an entirely different long-GOP compression schema to your h.264 file and the fun ensues. I am guessing there is some sort of mismatch between the blocks of pixel data your encoder is generating and how RUclips is processing their blocks of data. You could try a few tests to figure out what works best for you. 1) upload a short problem file at the native resolution and frame rate. Don't uprez to 4K. 2) upload the same file, uprezed to 4K with your preferred frame rate at your normal encoding bitrate and 3) upload a 4K version of the file at a higher bitrate (say something like VBR 2pass, 55 Mps target, 60 Mps max). Then compare the results. Be sure to examine the results from RUclips's compression on all the different playback sizes. I have seen these artifacts appear in the 1080 version of a video but disappear on the 4K version. When looking to master at 24fps and dealing with a camera that will only allow me to shoot in either 25 or 30 fps I most often choose 25 when shooting outside. To use the file in editing I force the playback frame rate down 4% to 24fps, giving me a 1-to-1 frame count (clip>modify>interpret footage>assume this frame rate is 24). That keeps the software from dropping frames. The speed difference is negligible. OK, this is waaaay more than you probably wanted to know. And I painted this with rather broad strokes because describing the root problem would fill a book. I don't know of any easy solutions so if someone comes up with something it will be great to hear. I'm sure there is a physics major out there who has created some sort of secret sauce or encoding template that affords RUclips to do more of a 1-to-1 recompression of your uploaded files.

You can make it fly in a no-fly zone if you started up without a cell phone hooked up to the controller.. power the controller and the mini on and then put the sticks diagonally down in or out you can't fly as high or far away but you can still fly it in restricted areas

Please consider a video for the 2019 Christmas club. A welcome, things to do before you fly, Rules for Hobbyist, an rules pertaining to posting pictures that could be considered for profit. Keep up the good work.
My understanding from watching a different video about the Mini is that it will also do this tracking in the Dronie setting, using the same set up as in the Helix mode. I don't own one (that'll change in the near future) but the video I watched showed someone walking away from the drone while in Dronie mode and the mini followed them. I could be wrong about the mode it was in so you might have to experiment with it to see if there are other modes where this functionality works!
Did the same thing the other day and noticed the tracking on circle mode. Hope you’re right about auto tracking. Aside from the lower quality video this drone has, it’s lack of auto tracking is a big let down
@@adidas4275 Without active track or waypoint mode im not bothering with it. I cant wait for a reasonable competitor to come around to stop this DJI apple bullshit. This is just a nerfed drone.
Nice little trick there. I suspected that it could actively track but there's no way DJI will unlock it. They want you to pay to play. I took mine out yesterday and had some fun with the quick shots. I'm currently trying to get a solid work flow out of this little thing for some Photogrammetry...so far its working OK! As for the camera quality, I'm actually surprised how good it looks. As usual, RUclips destroys the quality of the footage, but right off the drone it's way better than I expected. More than good enough for Instagram and even not to bad for larger screens with a little bit of post done to it. This little guy wont replace my custom rigs that carry GoPros and bigger cameras but because it's so small it now goes with me everywhere!
From what I gather, the tracking in Mavic Mini use the phone processor instead of the dedicated on board processor like other DJI drones. So you need a phone with fairly powerful processor to get the tracking work right. I guess that's why DJI still doesn't include the capability yet, aside from several obvious issues of streaming tracking data from phone to the drone like latency and interference..
Thanks Russ for the great find. But my non-intelligent Mavic 2 Pro wasn’t happy to hear that. It ate my Mavic Mini. Thanks for all your videos and now heading over to the DRONE Car Have a great weekend thank you
Hey so I basically bought DJI care refresh and DJI care refresh + for my mavic mini in the same date.I was wondering if the warranty is now activated and for how long is it activated for?
Thanks for the info and tips. Quickshots really seem great. Your videos are excellent. I have a P4 and love it. Bought a Mini for traveling. I received my mini on Thursday but Santa said I can't open it until Christmas morning. LOL. Merry Christmas!
I'm thinking the active track feature was disabled because the Mini doensn't have any obstacle avoidance features. It would be pretty easy to lead the Mavic Mini into a tree or bridge if it were blindly following you along a path... As far as stable, I'm amazed. I just took some footage of palm trees swaying in a moderate wind and the Mavic Mini is rock solid stable!
I’ll learn everything I need to know about the Mavic Mini before I ever receive it. Sigh....all the RUclipsrs have them already. Hope in future videos you might address this issue. BTW, looks like you had a good time.
Mavic Mini is able to track via software. The Litchi App for Mavic Mini did showed, that this is possible. Your Video shows also, that the mavic Mini is able to lock on a subject. I guess she 'll never get an update, because of sales to the mini 2.
When you refer to the subject, could I select a subject other than myself and film it without me appearing in the shot ? I would love to use those quicksots for real estate shots without me appering in it.
Hey at 6:00:00 you show the mini flying through a frame structure, how are you able to keep it centered and feel confident that you won’t strike the structure as you fly through it? Are you using the on screen grid for that? And do u have a video showing how to fly through tight spaces? Thx. I’m a subscriber and love your videos. Keep em coming.
They would have removed active track for the fact that the mini doesn’t have surrounding sensors meaning it could possible knock into things while trying to follow the object which could possible destroy the drone and its reputation.
Hi any pointers when you’re flying by the water? Trees? Do I have turn on or off something? What if my drone lost signal is there any buying to avoid that? Please help thanks
I guess it is possible to give the mini active track. If so, the question remains weather DJI wants to implement it or rather keep the feature excluively to other models to make the beginners upgrade at some point.
Hi Russ, hanks for the great tips shared. Just a quick question. Do I need to deactivate the quick shot mode and steer it back after the video is taken or will it deactivate itself and come back towards you ?
Please get active tracking! Im amazed at how scary being a newbie i am afraid of losing this little guy! Ive been slowly expanding my limits! Thank you
Try and watch some YT videos on flyaways, they almost always involve someone piloting their mini out in a situation where it cannot get back (wind). Try and fly into the wind going out so you can come back with the wind, if it's way too windy don't fly. If it loses connection it should RTH but remember it may go high to come home, if there's wind this could be a problem. Planning can avoid all of this! Fly within your limits. You'll be ok! :o)
Got it as my first drone 2 days ago. Unfortunately very windy here so haven't flown much and working night shift on a reality TV show so no time. But I see dji will release the sdk later this year and then the litchi app will hopefully be compatible and it has a ton of features.
I just got my Mavic Mini over this weekend. I was curious about a “follow me” function. Granted, my first drone, so probably ignorance on myself. The circle function with the tracking is something I’ll definitely try. I wakeboard as well as jet ski. So, this video has definitely helped me. We also ran into the unlock problem today. Frustrating but went to a nearby park.
Just a guess. I think the Mini defaults to the minimal C (Cine) speed when you invoke one of the Quickshots. Once the angular velocity of the subject exceeds the device's limit in C Mode, the subject moves out of the range of the lock and the lock is lost. Guessing again, the drone's angular velocity in a spiral is already close to the C Mode velocity limit.
Great video Russ! I would argue that the mini does have better connection to the controller then my mavic air did. Love the mini! Keep up the great work 👍
I definetly think it's possible for active tracking with an update...but without any obstacle avoidance and this drone being meant for the masses I doubt DJI will include it but maybe!
Great vid, did you try moving forward in Dronie setting? I'm wondering if it would travel even further and keep track of you. I have this drone and I mountain bike looking to get some short tracking sessions with it.
please look into this , so basically my dji fly app does not show the quick shots icon at all I looked for it everywhere andcouldn'tfind it . I have i phone The drone is fine other wise I had it for a week now stillhaven'tinstalled a memory card in it tho ! Is that the reason or this a bug ? Tha
Thanks for the informations. I am a DJI Mini newbie. Can you recommend an app, where I can safe it in full hd? And how could you upload the video even in 4K, when the Mini only offers 2.7K?
Thanks Russ for the cool info on the Mini. I'm still vacillating between - buy/no buy/wait for the next edition. The mini is definitely less expensive than the Mavic Pro 2 I have on hold. Price on the Pro 2 fly more kit, is a real consideration, given what they used to cost. Appreciate your channel and the info you present on the Mavic series of drones. Your comment about the Self Unlock not being part of the current firm ware, is quite true. There was a gentleman with a Mini at the Apollo XI field in Los Angeles (where I fly my Platinum), who couldn't fly his mini, because the field sits within Class D airspace of Van Nuys Airport. So thinking I may wait on the mini, until you mention an update on the Self Unlock feature coming out. Cheers, and Happy Holidays.
DJI support has confirmed that self unlock will be on the next release of the app planned to the end of December. Where I live and where I usually fly needs authorization.
Do you think they would add active track even though the Mini doesn’t have any avoidance capabilities? Doesn’t seem like that would be wise from the manufacturer perspective or the operator/owner perspective.
Great information in this video. Thank you. What I believe, however, is that these features were skipped for a reason. The Mavic mini is my first drone. I bought it a week ago and I am already thinking how to upgrade drone footage to 4k. Well, I would have to do that by buying a more expensive drone. I believe people either buy the mini and never fly it or they fly it and need a more expensive drone in the future.
Great find, albeit I was looking at the mavic mini specifically for follow me feature. I currently use the spark with all my cycling videos, but finding the this very bulky and heavy with all the batteries i have to carry. Hope to see files me feature with the mini. Any suggestions on a done that is small and light with files me feature? Appreciate it. .
Hey Russ, I like your experimental nature. I wonder if the reason they don't have active track on this drone is because it doesn't have forward obstacle sensors? We viewers are thankful for your channel, as well! Keep up the good work!
If you think about it, DJI can't afford to make the Mini too good lest it compete harder with the MA2, which I'm certain has way more margin and profit. They did come out with some software improvements, one being self-unlock and the other being able to adjust and lock exposure in video mode. If they really wanted to they could upgrade the Mini to shoot 4k video with a firmware update... but don't look to see that any time soon. The 2.7k footage is really good for what it is. Imaging how 4k ability might cut into MA2 sales.
I believe any obstacle avoidance was part of the reason they decided not to include active track. The quick shot modes are similar, but in a much smaller area, so an accident is less likely. I think active track is very possible, but the increased risk of a crash did to the drone tracking you long distances through new areas with no type of obstacle avoidance is my guess for why it was not included
It doesn't have collision avoidance, active tracking without that is to risky it will crash into things and thats why they disabled it and not because it can't track. It's because it can't detect obstacles im guessing, no sensors.

@@TheStoryGuide Thanks, and yes it was upped from 2.7 to 4k. I thought maybe that was the issue. I meant to export at 2.7, but didn't change my preset at the start.
@@51Drones I can't count the number of times I have done that and wondered why something doesn't look right. Its an easy thing to trip over. Keep up the great work on your channel. And thanks for taking the time to share all your efforts. They are certainly appreciated.
StoryGuide Thanks a bunch guys!
Great find! That was my thought also. I hope DJI gives us active tracking. Looks like the Mini is capable.
Great video! My Mavic Mini will be coming in this upcoming Monday 😎😎😎
Thanks for the review! Loving the Mavic Mini. Distance and camera is decent enough to get some amazing shots!
It is good to have all these informative videos, because you can lear quick and hard on mistakes made by others, as well as new discoveries.
Thank you for one more fact learned about Mini. I'll sure test it myself. ;)
Thank you for sharing this awesome hidden feature 51Drones !! 🚀👍🏼🚀🔥
Hi Russ, I noticed that same trick while using circle when my buddy was combining corn. It worked great!
You can make it fly in a no-fly zone if you started up without a cell phone hooked up to the controller.. power the controller and the mini on and then put the sticks diagonally down in or out you can't fly as high or far away but you can still fly it in restricted areas
Russ, as you mentioned in the video the Mavic Mini is going to be on many a persons Christmas list. As A 107 Pilot I haven't had to pay much attention to the hobbyist class.
Aside from the lower quality video this drone has, it’s lack of auto tracking is a big let down
Jake Pollen yeah & beginners are the ones who would be using active track. So it fits with their target market
@@adidas4275 Without active track or waypoint mode im not bothering with it. I cant wait for a reasonable competitor to come around to stop this DJI apple bullshit. This is just a nerfed drone.
Thank you for sharing this! I was wondering this very thing.
Wow!! It means it has a kind of follow me mode while doing the circles. Bang on - now its my must buy mate!!
Thanks Russ for the great find.
But my non-intelligent Mavic 2 Pro wasn’t happy to hear that.
It ate my Mavic Mini.
Thanks for all your videos and now heading over to the DRONE Car
Have a great weekend thank you
Hey so I basically bought DJI care refresh and DJI care refresh + for my mavic mini in the same date.I was wondering if the warranty is now activated and for how long is it activated for?
That's awesome will try it. Hopefully DJI will add a few more quick shots like the mavic air has.
Very nice, thanks. How do you get out of the quickshot mode back to the live video screen?
Thanks for the info and tips. Quickshots really seem great. Your videos are excellent. I have a P4 and love it. Bought a Mini for traveling. I received my mini on Thursday but Santa said I can't open it until Christmas morning. LOL. Merry Christmas!
SO MANY MAVIC MINI VIDEOS... and I love it. Waiting for Dec 4th to finally get mine.
ive been thinking about this since it came out. finally, a review that goes over this
I'm thinking the active track feature was disabled because the Mini doensn't have any obstacle avoidance features.
Just order from best buy Canada there just sitting there in stock in store lol
Had it over 2 weeks lol
They've been sitting in stock on Amazon since the day they came out. Had mine a few days after it released
Cool find 😎👍 Thanks for sharing.
Mavic Mini is able to track via software. The Litchi App for Mavic Mini did showed, that this is possible. Your Video shows also, that the mavic Mini is able to lock on a subject. I guess she 'll never get an update, because of sales to the mini 2.
your in Minot,ND I know the truckstop!... Im just north of you in MB.. Thanks for this video!
Def lookin to trade up from my Phantom 3 but hoping they raise the 120’ limit on the quick shots and circle shots etc
When you refer to the subject, could I select a subject other than myself and film it without me appearing in the shot ? I would love to use those quicksots for real estate shots without me appering in it.
Yes!
That structure was pretty big, so I was confident. I wouldn't go much smaller!
That’s genius! Active track is coming!
They would have removed active track for the fact that the mini doesn’t have surrounding sensors meaning it could possible knock into things while trying to follow the object which could possible destroy the drone and its reputation.
1tz_Noah every mavic has active track.....
Hi any pointers when you’re flying by the water? Trees? Do I have turn on or off something? What if my drone lost signal is there any buying to avoid that? Please help thanks
Let hope active track is on the way! Thanks bud
Nice tips man!
Congratulations from Brasil! 🇧🇷
Great hidden feature. Cant wait to try it! I always love seeing people experiment with their gear!
Great find!! I love my new Mavic Mini!!

Great info Russ. Looks like you’re having lots of fun with the mini.
I HAVE BEEN WAITING FOR SOMEONE TO TEST IF THIS WORKS , THANKYOU!
Thank you and MERRY CHRISTMAS. Hope you have a good one 🤗
Keep up the great work 👍
Merry Christmas, Russ to you and family from NW Fla panhandle🙏🏼🎄🙏🏼
I definetly think it's possible for active tracking with an update...but without any obstacle avoidance and this drone being meant for the masses I doubt DJI will include it but maybe!
Great vid, did you try moving forward in Dronie setting? I'm wondering if it would travel even further and keep track of you. I have this drone and I mountain bike looking to get some short tracking sessions with it.
Just ordered my mini Friday, beyond pumped for it! I really do hope it gets active track.
I just tried the circle mode on a slow moving subject and it looks really cool!!! Thanks for the vid.
So... the mini can follow you by behind?. For example If you are riding your bike in rect line?.🤔
please look into this , so basically my dji fly app does not show the quick shots icon at all I looked for it everywhere andcouldn'tfind it .
Great video! Thanks for the tips and the good ending!
Where I live and where I usually fly needs authorization.
ruclips.net/video/kwqLSi2XKAY/видео.html - Quick shots
Appreciate it. .
How about dronie while driving toward it as it flies away from you....pot it into Sport Mode too
Hey Russ, I like your experimental nature. I wonder if the reason they don't have active track on this drone is because it doesn't have forward obstacle sensors?
We viewers are thankful for your channel, as well! Keep up the good work!
Thanks Tim!
Thank you for testing the somewhat active mode with the quick shot featre.
"many generic videos out there but this is different".. proceeds to do another generic video.. we love your content no need to sugarcoat it.
Neat video bro👍🏻😎 Thank you 👍🏻
Great work bro🤙
