For real, I'm going to show you how exactly to create incredible autonomous drone tracking shots using the DJI Mavic Mini drone, despite the fact that it technically doesn't have ActiveTrack in it, but rather a dumbed down QuickShot set. Still, with a few tips you'll nail some amazing shots while solo, especially for sports type shots like cycling, running, and more.
I dive into which of the DJI QuickShot modes work well to fake ActiveTrack, and which ones don't. From Dronie to Helix, Rocket to Circle, I give the pros and cons of each, and recommendations on distances and speeds to make incredible b-roll shots.

if you set ev -3 to -7 then lock AE will work awesome for Drone Quickshots, great tutorial, chhers .

The drone is capable of active track and 4k but dji doesnt add these because they want us to buy the expensive drones

To add this technology would increase the size and weight of the drone so it will be no longer under 250g
They may have well have added it in. 4K wouldn't have made me spend another $500 for a "pro" drone, but I bought the mini.
If Mavic Mini adds this feature, it will singlehandedly be the best consumer grade drone for general use.
The $25 LItchi app now allows the Mavic Mini to have a Follow Me mode.

I guess easier just to buy other drone. Cuz DJI "castrated" all the necessary functions, starting with Active Track and ending with 4k, although we all know that the Ambarella H22 chip, which is installed in Mini, by default supports 4k at 60fps. Unlike Mini, even the cheapest drones have an Active Track function. 🤦♂️ If in the near future doesn't appear the firmware with Active Track and support for 4k, I do not see any reason to buy this "cutted" sh!t.
This video was super helpful to me. I am a trail runner. I run solo mostly. I went with the Mavic Mini because of size and weight and was just going to be happy w the Dronie and Circle mode and miss out on the live track. Now very nice to know I can pull of a "moving Dronie" and get an active track look. Thanks so much

Let me ask: what would be the best settings to fly above and circle a stationary target; example, a roof.? I just got mine and it is my first drone. Thanks in advance.
In that case you can use the ‘circle’ quick shot option and simply draw a little green square atop the roof within the app and it’ll easily circle it. Enjoy!
I had no idea you could draw the little green square around anything but a person.
I am hoping DJI unlocks full Active Track with the user clicking to accept responsibility for collisions insofar as there is no obstacle avoidance. My Parrot Anafi has no obstacle avoidance and it's Follow Me works very well.
It was fine for my Phantom 3 Advanced which has poi programs. Granted it wasn't technically active track but it allowed for great shots. I wonder if Litchi will build on this software as they added active track for P3 drones

Forget, cuz the huge greed of DJI marketers will not allow to do this, as well as enable 4k support, which is supported by the Ambarella H22 chip by default with 60fps. ;)
@@john.d0e They built it to do much more than its currently capable of. They will implement Cinelike, 24fps, custom profiles, active tracking 'if' they feel their project is in danger within the market. Look at the Osmo pocket for instance. Slow and steady feature-set upgrades just when the likes of GoPro bring out the 7, 8 and Insta360 keep updating their One X.

This video is really helpful and I'm practicing your techniques with the 01.00.0500 firmware update (5/2/2020). I’m basically getting the same results as you teach them here...it loses me in the helix but is pretty good footage till that point. And the dronie works well as you describe. It would be nice if it could follow me on my bike or skis, without having to buy another drone. I really appreciate this kind of training.

I’m guessing they’re reluctant to do that since there are no obstacle avoidance sensors. Quick shots are still vulnerable, but they’re more planned out typically,

Awesome video, thank you! You have not discovered anything new, there is plenty of other videos that tell to use quick shots to fake active tracking. But yours is the first one that i see that actually gives useful tips an examples of how this can be actually used to obtain short but great video sequences, that can be used inside a montage of a longer video greatly enhancing it. Sure the method has its limitations compared to a real active tracking, but your video can help a lot to understand those limitations and to obtain great results inside the limits that the quick shot modes have.
I have been watching how-to's since the purchase of my MM, this is by far the best and easiest to follow I have seen. I can't wait to get out of lock down and try it out. 👍👍

Like the options you show, but via the Litchi Bata App, you can do active track, yes DJI would left it out because of safety & reliability without avoidince..! The mini except for the signal issue is a nice drone if you unlucky got the EU version lots of signal issue so much so you think it should be recalled..!

I was expecting more from this video. Of course there is this quickshot feature, but it doesn't track you for a long time. It's quite obvious to use quickshot for short tracking. It's made for that. But how do you really track someone with the Mavic Mini, without time limitation??? This is the question everyone is asking them self and you didn't gave a answer to this. Sorry, this video is just click bait, the red arrow is only missing.

DJI kept active track out of the drone because of how cheap it is and they don't want it to cannibalize they're more expensive drones.
Of course the selfie generation wants active tracking in the Mavic Mini, but more disappointing to me is it doesn't even have headless mode or anything like Tap to Fly, much less waypoint missions and point-of-interest orbiting -- all features that make it much easier to get "cinematic", smoothly executed shots of whatever you want to point the camera at, while the autopilot worries about where the drone is headed. If DJI thought that leaving those features out of the Mini will encourage sales of their $1000+ drones, someone should tell them that those features are generally found in even the cheapest GPS drones these days.

How do you get looking so crisp? I used mine for the first time and shot a little video in my backyard and there is a flicker and not as crisp. It is the last video I put on my channel. Check it out and please help
Can you use the same concept for "point of interest" subjects? In other words, what happens if you start recording, then begin a quick shot program by locking on a target and then manually flying around the object? Will the camera record, staying fixed on the subject?
Sadly, the second you touch the controls (sticks) it ends the quick shot. Unlike the other DJI drones that allow you to modify the flight of the quick shot.
DJI can 100% add active track to the mini, but they won't cuz they want us to buy the more expensive model. Although mini doesn't have obstacle sensor doesn't mean it shouldn't active track. You just have to be more careful with your surroundings. IMO they should add active tracking to the mini and it will prompt users the dangerous of running into obstacles using it. This way experienced users can still enjoy the amazing feature.

I don't understand why it tracks so briefly; presumably it has all the hardware it needs to perform continuous tracking and it's literally just a feature they want to hide behind a paywall called Mini 2 ?

The more dji mavic mini video's I watch the more I realize that it is not a good drone, I'll just stick with my spark. The only good thing I see about the mini is that you don't have to register with the FAA but hey to each it's own

It lacks rocket and dronie but you get FVP, active tracking etc!

Thanks! Yeah, it’s mostly just a case or repeatedly trying (a lot). But over time you’ll be able to predict a bit better how the shot might turn out and save a few tries.
I do not get the complaint. How can there be a "disappointment" if the next drone up (that has the feature ) is twice the price. It also cannot do automated flying is that also a disappointment. Come on now.. Beyond that good video since others have tried and failed
Because the previous drone, the Spark, did have obstacle avoidance...and was cheaper.

honestly, these shots look better than the active track stuff. I never got active track to really work well on my mavic air so I sold it and got a mini and got 200 bucks back on top. Brilliant tips here. Will definitely try that.

This is awesome. I've got my Mini SE sitting on the kitchen bench ready to be wrapped and opened on Christmas day. Looking forward to trying some of this out, and love the Quad Lock tip, although it doen't look as though it's available here in NZ.
