Love the shot of Blur at the beginning! That was the '13' era for them, one of their best albums. And Summerteeth for Wilco...'99 was a good year for music.
Jeff and Wilco just keep getting better. New 4 CD retrospective/rarities reflects their amazing gestation from acoustic to the amazing eclectic band they are today.
+joeshlatbonk for certain Summerteeth wouldn't be the masterpiece it is without Jay's contribution. He helped with YFW as well but not as much (that's more the album that proved he wasn't good for them long term). I'd say he had a lot to do with that era. I still like to give Nels Cline credit though. They are still an amazing band to this day and Nels is easily one of the best guitarists working today.
Jay was a great muse for Jeff and his musicianship was amazing. Neither were as good without the other. Jeff had the songs but Jay had the harmony, feel and musicianship. Bob kinda sucked but the 2 people who also deserve BIG credit for their great sound and live shows during this eras are Ken Coomer and Adam Roehlke who did the sound and taught JP everything he knows. When Coomer, Bennett and Roehlke were let go it was all downhill as far as I'm concerned. Feel lucky if you saw them live during this period.
I think that the first album with the Neil guy was quite good, then all the next records were really, really dull. There's nothing as unexpected and glorious as the riff that leads to the chorus in this song, for example.
@@randykerkman7246 they’re the best they’ve been in a longggg fucking time right now. Their newer guitarist Nels cline made it in the top 50 of the top 100 greatest guitarist of all time on rollingstone. Also it’s pretty much the original lineup still....same lineup since YHF which is where they started to break through. Their new album is some of their best work. Especially Jeff’s new solo album too. The brains are all Jeff not jay, jay just helped with some of the experimental sounds which didn’t make a dent when he left cause they got someone better lmao.
@@jackkitchen154 i stand by my original statement, which is my opinion. There are only 2 members from Being There, Tweddy and Stirratt, hardly resembling the original lineup. If you look at Summerteeth which Jim Kot called the album of the year, Bennet co-wrote 12 of 14. Because of this they hardly resemble what I liked about them.
@@randykerkman7246 I love summerteeth but a co-write means writing a lead guitar solo or a piano part. Also nels cline is in my opinion one of the most versatile guitarist of all time. And I said original members from yankee hotel foxtrot not summerteeth. Yankee hotel foxtrot is where they started getting critical and public fame. Some of their best songs came after. Jay only played on 3 albums.
Besides the alcohol and drug use, he also struggled with extreme bouts of migraine that made him throw up almost daily. It wasn't a pretty time for him personally, but damn - the music was on point!
to clarify: the mix that the band hears is quite different than the FOH mix we are hearing via the TV recording, etc. Each band member will have a separate monitor mix.
@@prilljazzatlanta5070 Mmm. I love britpop. Blur had some fine tunes. "Coffee and TV" is a lo-fi masterpiece. It's as if Squeeze ate a bar xanax. Squeeze. Now that's some pinnacle britpop.
I love Wilco, from AM to Whole Love. I prefer old school Wilco but the current lineup is probably the best incarnation. I just finished reading "Learning how to die" by Greg Kot, great book. Although I do think ultimately Wilco is Jeff's band, there's no denying that Mr. Tweedy has a bit of an inflated ego. He clearly outgrew Ken Coomer, but letting Bennett go was a mistake. And the way he fired both of them was pretty heartless.
What's nice is that we are hearing a band playing live - this is no lip sync, thank the lord(s). Praise be. I would rather hear a great live band playing live.
I JUST FOUND THESE GUYS, BEING IM FROM USA NEVER HEARD , BUT WERNT THEY PLAYING POP FESTIVAL WITH THE LIBERTINES A FEW MOMENTS AGO, IN SAN PAULO? LOVE THESE GUYS.
i remember seeing the BBC america broadcast of this and thinking, 'take that, blur.' it had to be humbling for blur. don't get me wrong, blur had some fantastic music that i love, but this is on a whole other level.
Chillman4130... not sure how his guitar can be an afterthought when he primarily writes his music on acoustic. I know what you really meant though and just poking you a bit. I'm sure leaving the playing to a guy like Nels is a no brainer for Tweety. He is very fortunate in that he has always managed to surround himself with very capable musicians who can knock it out in a very economical fashion. Why mess with success?
Love the shot of Blur at the beginning! That was the '13' era for them, one of their best albums. And Summerteeth for Wilco...'99 was a good year for music.
And "Showbiz"!
And they had just played “Tender.” Imagine hearing these two songs played live back to back in this era
Also: Soft Bulletin, Keep It Like a Secret, When the Pawn, Mule Variations...
97,98,99, and 2000 is the best four year run for music in history
RIP Jay Bennett. Fantastic musician.
This song is about Gods love
THEY SOUND SOOOOO GOOOOOOOOD
Who knew these guys would be the most important rock band in my generation! LOVE WILCO!
Hmmm I think that’s Radiohead

Great performance - of course, great is exactly what one would expect from Wilco.
Jay Bennett killing it here
So sad that he is gone......
Tough choice of words.
as usual
favorite era of wilco. such great live shows.
Jeff and Wilco just keep getting better. New 4 CD retrospective/rarities reflects their amazing gestation from acoustic to the amazing eclectic band they are today.
Jay Bennett-era Wilco is like Mick Taylor-era Rolling Stones. How much he had to do with it I don't know but their era is best era.
+joeshlatbonk great analogy; I think quite a lot in both cases

This "old Wilco" lineup is their best, IMO. I miss Ken Coomer's style. And it is SO sad that Jay Bennett is gone...........
couldn't agree more. IMHO they are just a drunken shell of what they used to be.
But like... Nels...

Jay Bennett. Eternal. That's it.
Oh Jay. I so miss Jay.
Peak-Wilco
After Blur, Wilco, fucking good!
Great music goin on here....
Amazing
Wow!
Great tune, loved the guitar solo at the end.
The old Neil Young one-noter
1999, the year of Summerteeth's release.
That intro lick is very Blur-esque.
Jesus, Jeff looks so healthy :(
+Law Turley Ironically he was pretty unhealthy at the time. Drugs and alcohol. He just looks younger and skinny

Just finished his book. He quit drinking at 23. It was all pills at this point.
Eh I bet if he lost his weight he would look some what the same. He’s only 51 or 52...same age as jimmy fallon

I'm guessing that this must be the episode with Van Morrison and the red suit that John talks about in the book...
was there ever a tighter and more relevant band in this era ?

Blur played Tender on the same show 😮
I will have to do that! ty! I've gotten good suggestions of artists to check out over the years. Most pay off.

This song is so much better without those fucking bells!
Haha good point!
0:01 Blur!

Who are these kids? LOL!
The bass was SUPPOSED to be loud...in any case one of my favourite WIlco tracks. If you like WILCO check out SECRET AFFAIR SOHO DREAMS ALBUM...
RIP Jay, but Jeff took all the positives about that man and his music direction and moved the band forward.
This band has never quite gotten it right since kicking out Jay. Miss that guy.
+Matt Heckler The Whole Love is as good as anything they've done w/ Jay, imo. But yes he's missed, he was good at what he did
He left, actually, but he has said that he left so the other members couldn't kick him out. I agree, he was a huge part of the band.
Whoa - that bass tone is booty... Blame it on the jazz bass?
This isn't Jeff's band, look at some later clips Post bennet. He has a such more confident presence.
Heard this song on the radio and I turned it off immediately. I can't stand it .
Could write a bad song if he tried!
i have to disagree with u there mate. i think it sounds fantastic. turn down ur bass
still the worst snare drum tone ever.. best toan of everything else
Wilco are so dull and tame.
and what have we been up to lately!?!
If they smashed their guitars and snorted coke on stage would they be a better band?
