Well done, Sir.

I’ve wondered about that lyric for years !!!
Surefire should change their slogan to "Pay more, for less."

But your clothes are too.
@@assclapper2231surefire is a battle proven brand for sure. But as far as output, they’re subpar. We dropped our surefires for streamlights. Glad we did
@assclapper2231 I own both, honest I beat the hell out of my streamlights and there still running. One of my surefire already broke. Everything from China isn't junk. Streamlight is a solid company and there output is alot better than surefire.
@@sithcdwleo’s use streamlight 99% soo it is a good light
I solved the self blinding in the mirror problem by turning my house into all mirrors. Now all I need to do is turn my light on anywhere and I blind everyone in the house at the same time.
We used to skip school in high school to go caving, (spelunking). We would make knee pads from towels and duct tape. Our flashlights were the standard 2 "D" cell flashlights and it was a MUST to carry extra batteries and bulbs. The local cave we went to was tight but long and it was easy to get lost in there. I've gotten lost in there for over 9 hours at a time. This was 1986-87 and I dont think a CR123 battery existed yet. There was graffiti thru the cave, mostly at the beginning but deep down there was original markings that went back to the 1800's.We thought then, "how did that guy get all the way down here with just a oil lantern???"This is why I love and treasure a quality flashlight. My EDC light is now a Olight S1 Baton.
I’ve had 3 olights fail on me from regular use. Id switch to stream light or surefire. My olight s1 baton and s1r and olight m1x all broke after a year or so.
That's really cool. Thanks for sharing. No caves around where I live, but I would love to try it out.

3 years ago. Still fantastic
Agreed. Going to get one myself
I have a Streamlight RailMount 1. It is a great light to use on a rifle. But if people are worried about too much light inside a building, you can always use the low setting which still puts out of light.
thanks
Chad Bowles people just shouldn't put it on a white wall right in front of you. The extra lumens is a must for blinding an attacker.
Great video! Just thought I'd mention that the small black zipties are actually to secure the pressure pad to a rail attachment. You can see the small grooves at the front and back where they fit onto the pad. Thanks for all your content!
"WTF I shined this light at my mirror and it blinded me while I was clearing my house !" Lol you can't please some people
yup
Awesome light. I've owned this light for a few years now. Recently I was put in a position where I had to break a car window. I smashed through the window with this little light and the light continues to work like nothing ever happened.
The non rifle version
Been running this streamlight for over a year now with about 8k rounds. Holds up great. Chews thru batteries.
I'm 7 months late bro but invest in the streamlight rechargeable lithium battery's. It'll save you a fortune.
@@TheDeagster877 Do the rechargeable batteries last longer and also how are they recharged?

I'm just now getting mine. In the end, it'll be 155 bucks but broken into 4 payments thanks to Sezzle. I love the new trend of sites using services that allow customers to pay for something in installments. I can't afford to drop 155 in one go right now but I can afford four payments of 38.75.

$132 from Amazon at the moment.
Great review as always Mike.I actually realized yesterday, that you are the only RUclips gun personality left that is still doing what I consider Comprehensive, yet, fluid reviews of gear. I am really beginning to get somewhat bored with a few of what were some of my favorite channels that have gotten a little lazy and think that because they found a video formula that worked for them and received many views that now every video is the exact same format just a different product plugged in. It's like late 80's metal, Chorus; verse, bridge, chorus, verse, bridge chorus, bridge SOLO, verse bridge chorus, chorus, chorus FADE.
thank you; granted I generally follow a format as well.
I have the HLX and mounted it with a arisaka keymod scout mount to my BCM KMR Faxon 18" gunner(Truck Gun) and love it.Ive had the Railmount 1(350lumen) on my HD gun for 9 months/2000+ rnds with VLTOR Keymod mount to a Bootleg Picmod rail.
Just ordered one based on your review...thanks, ordered from Midway though. The heck with Amazon... thanks again.
I have this light and like it quite a bit for the amount of light it puts out and the range it has. I have had it flicker on me and go out from recoil more than once.
I’ve never had a problem with mine. This is probably the best light you can get for the money and it even comes with a pressure pad.
18650 for training, fresh CR 123 for use. Got it.
A video about Streamlight in which the entire intro is filmed in the daylight. Perfect.
To make you happy why dont you turn the brightness down to zero during the entire 26 second intro so the Streamlight opening will be dark for you. Problem solved.
Some folks just wake up to complain about something.............anything.
@@paulyp9853 No complaining amigo, just an observation. Next thing I’ll search for is a review on wetsuits to wear while sun tanning. Inspired by Pauly P.
@@jessefleming1421 LOL - Let me know how that goes for you. Have a good one.
BTW the Streamlight HL-X - despite starting in the daylight - is one of the best weapon lights around. Never mind the term "for the price". Any price - its one of the best.
what i think makes this HLX amazing is that it takes a rechargeable battery which for me is huge. if only for hunting and night training. saves money.
It does indeed
Got mine this week and mounted it to the BCM. Love it so far seems to be a great light for a great price!
nice
Illuminating review.
i bought a streamight pro tac 350 lumen for my 10.5" ar pistol and this light is powerful enough for the price. $94.80 shipped.brand new with all the same accessories. these lights are great amd very affordable
This is the best review I've seen on this light. Thank you! I bought it and love it.
Have you not seen sage dynamics review?
Thank you for the heads up with the using the CR 123’s when stored/ not in constant use, and going to a rechargeable, when in constant use, or night target practice.
Ordered one when you posted Amazon deal on Facebook. Great light so far. I believe this is the first review of it anywhere because I hadn't seen any when I ordered.
thanks for the report
So glad I found this video when I was researching WML for my AR. Helped me decide to buy this particular model. Thank you :)
Mrgunsngear, just wanted to share that my #2 HL-X WML had a catastrophic failure of the wiring leading into the tail cap with the tape switch. Put standard clicky tail cap on and it works fine.
Haven't contacted Streamlight yet for warranty replacement, but really questioning this light for even home defense use due to the weak tape switch wiring I keep hearing about, and have now experienced firsthand. The rifle it's mounted on has never been dropped, or submitted to any use harder than range time, casing and trunk of the car.
Might get that new 1,500 lumen Surefire for my recce after all, because I'm definitely not trusting them now for any hard use now.
Jonathan Ziegler I’m having the same issue with my tape switch. 50% of the time I hit my pressure pad and the light won’t come on. I have to twist the cap and it will come on. I haven’t tried the click cap yet. But I contacted Streamlight and they said to send it in and they will take care of it. They stated he turn around time is 2-3 days. So I guess I’ll send it back. I’m really disappointed though and a little worried about trusting it seeing as it’s on my main gun.
GenXJerk what wound up happening
That's what keeps me from getting one. Too bad the surefire is like $400+
@dancruze and from what I've been seeing the Surefire dual fuel lights are rife with their own reliability problems.
I never did get in contact with Streamlight about my tape switches, I just went direct mount with clicky tail cap and have had no more issues with the 3 HL-X I now own.
Just got one of these lights it's great especially the hardware that comes with it easy to use thanks again for a great review Mike
I got this light shipped the day it was released and love it. Probably too much light in most peoples opinion, but I feel it's perfect. Good review.
Thank for the video brother, SOLD...Hitting the Net as we speak..Thanks again..

@@Mrgunsngear I think you meant 👍🏻
20+hrs on the low setting is pretty impressive. Great review!
18650 battery capability is a major selling point to me, as my Goal Zero solar charger came with a 18650 power bank that it can charge in an afternoon.
awesome
I will be picking this up soon. Because I live in the deep dark South and can afford thermal like I would like this would be the next best thing. And that price point is amazing, this is one of your best finds in my opinion! Thanks for all the hard work and I can't wait to see what's next!
After the review, I just bought one...this is what I was looking for. Thanks for that well-done review MGG.
thank you
I just got mine in yesterday so excellent timing. Botach has the 2000 lumen deal which is the rail mount and handheld version for $169. The clip on the handheld looks a bit strange but I like it. It allows you to carry it deep in the pocket making it easier to access other items in your pocket. Didn't find an MLok mount for the pressure switch so I carefully drilled the holes on the pressure switch so I could use the larger Magpul MLok bolts I had. I was able to mount the switch directly to my MLok forearm. Easy to do with a handheld drill and made sure I started small until I was able to screw the bolt through the hole.
thanks
The cloud defensive LCS paired up with this is one awesome light and mount kit.
the light body is a bit longer so some mounts will have issue with the m lok or keymod screw nearest to the light, the body extends over it and unless you cut down an allen key, it's hard to work with, so beware when looking at mounts. if you mount it from the bottom it's not an issue, but an in line mount may not be an easy fit. great light and the cloud defense mount for the pad is great.
interesting; I haven't run into that.
Another solid review brother.
Ive decided on this over the Scout, and will be picking up two.
Thanks again.
Thank you
I am using this on almost all my ARs. Fantastic weapon light for the money!
thanks for the report
My 18650 batteries do not just "die" unexpectedly. They dim for a decent time, actually ramp down as voltage drops. Are you referring to unregulated 18650s? I have a 2000 lumen Lumintop torch that I use daily and when the battery is getting low on juice, the light ramps down. That may be due to the Andruil UI since the Lumintop uses a unregulated 18650.
Do not expect an answer, just placing the Qs here for future readers to think about.
Yea I was thinking the same thing. I've used tons of different 18650's and even harvested a couple dozen years ago from a couple old laptop batteries and still to this day (9 years later) use those batteries. Regulated or un regulated Ive never had a 18650 just up and die on me. All mine have just dimmed out. The unregulated ones I don't let get too dead cuz its bad for them.
@@tylerhall6455Haha Didn't know they were in laptops too. Got a bunch out of cracked Dewalt batteries at a previous job. 8 or 9 in the bigger batteries.
As always, great video. I'd like to add that the Fenix lights are very underrated. Very high quality lights for about half the price of a Streamlight or Surefire. The Fenix TK16 would be a great one to campare this Streamlight with. I have my TK16 mounted on my DDm4 with a offset DD light mount and after 1 1/2 years of use it is still running like new and have only recharged it once.
I just got this light after discounting it for years. This with a Cloud Defensive switch mount is a potent solution for less than 200 hundred bucks. Plus it takes 18650s which for me is a must these days...you listening surefire? I shouldnt have to have my Surefire bodies reamed out to take them....
IDK why I trust this guy, but I do. haha
I'm late to the party. But thanks for the video. I've been trying to decide which light to get. I've watched a few of your light vids the past couple days. After watching this one, and reading some online content, I think I have my mind made up. Thanks again.
I'd rather have more lumens than I need than not enough. Good review 👍💪
Just to be sure these Protac lights can be set to where you just push for momentary then click for constant without low or strobe? Not using tape switch just the tailcap.
Hey thanks. This answered all the questions I had about this product.
Good review, thank you for taking the time to make this.
just bought mine and i am happy! thanks so much for this awesome review
You're welcome 👍🏽
Incredibly detailed video man. Thanks so much for this!! I really appreciate your effort.
Excellent review!
A very informative channel. Thanks for sharing.
Can you tell me what the two holes are for on top of the pressure pad? I know it comes with two screws but they are too long to mount into those holes. Thanks
$99 on Amazon today. (2/15/2020)
Great video.
Great light.
However, there is a little bit of play on the pressure pad with the rubber mounts.
All in all, it’s a great value.
thanks for the report
Nice review of the light, but I would like to have seen the switch mounted in place and in use. I'm in search of a weapon light and this one is currently top on my list. How and where to locate the switch is still a question for me. At least I now know what those two plastic clips are for.
Great video! Decent lights for sure! For the money they can't be touched.
Great review. Keep up the honest reviews of current gear.
coyote hunting 😮 coyote Peterson take cover!!!
Are you aware of the problem the have? I did a short video explaining it and how to fix it. On my channel in the "Guns" Playlist. Aside from the flickering issue, it's been a great light for me. Have 2 of them.
That moment you realize you can use the same batteries for your weaponlight and your vape!
The HL-X looks awesome for my first weapon light, I'm buying the shit out of that tomorrow.
Exactly why I want an 18650 compatible WML. Have at least 20 batteries I can use. I believe they'll fit in the B5 SOPMOD stock too.
Excellent video. The only issue is as you said that the light is very strong and in small rooms and it will be a problem for inexperienced people. Can you make a video to show us how to ''room clearing'' in the dark with this strong light without get ourselves blind?
Thank you. It's too complex of a subject to really show because ever room in the world is different.
No problem! The only way I can think is to not look directly at the light, especially at the center of this light.
I was looking on youtube for surefire gun lights and I found your video with this light. Do you suggest me to buy the Streamlight Rail Mount HL-X (1,000 Lumens) or any other light for my shotgun? Thanks.
I seriously think that Surefire is starting to coast off their reputation. Companies like Streamlight, Olight, Fenix, and Inforce, are absolutely demolishing Surefire in terms of features and value. Sure maybe Surefire lights are able to stand up best to getting chucked out of a helicopter or dropped off a cliff, but if you need any other feature besides that and don’t want to pay double what a light is really worth, don’t buy Surefire.
dont forget holosun making trijicon look like the surefire of the red dot scene
@@mghegotagun Hell, even my Romeo 5 is all the red dot someone needs for a home/property defense rifle for 1/6th the cost. An AR with a streamlight and holosun/Romeo 5 combo is laughably more cost effective than sure fire/aim point/trijicon
Making a light "military" proof isn't some black magic. When a product doesn't NEED to cost that much to produce and make a profit, you bet someone else will come along and do it for them.
Especially when the pricing is EGREGIOUS with surefire. It does NOT cost that much money to make a reliable flashlight
@@rfcdgaf They sell whole lights (without the tape switch or even the tailcap to run the tape switch) for $300+ but also sell just the light heads for... Also $300. Their pricing literally makes no sense but people swear it's just "being poor" when you choose something else.

This light is in my future, but I always find another toy and forget this.
video idea sir, budget shotgun review or home defense?

thanks for this review. you mentioned the "too bright" thing being a training / software issue. i've got a streamlight tlr-3 (maybe 130 lumens?) on my nightstand gun, and if i've been laying in the dark and hit that light (to simulate suddenly awakened) i am kinda blinded. what's the chance of you doing a video on how to properly use a weapon mounted light?
@MrGnG This being an older model, is it still in use at your place? As a guy on a budget, it checks all the boxes and much cheaper ($132 Amazon) than Scout lights.
Wondering if anyone is running this light on a shotgun, perhaps a Mossberg 590A1? Thoughts, mounting tips, suggestions, pros and cons? Love the channel, keep 'em coming. Thanks
This will be my next purchase for my AR.
awesome
For clearing rooms, would the low mode solve the problem of not blinding yourself?
Ty
Mr.G&G I know this has nothing to do with the video but I just ran across NC house bill 723 which is trying to repeal the stand your ground law in NC but what concerns me is that it's also hiding some language about a magazine capacity restriction to 15 rounds! Are you aware of this?? And who do we contact in our particular state to try to fight it?
I am. But I don't want to give it any publicity as right now it stands about 0% chance. If it becomes an actual threat I'll address it publicly
Mrgunsngear Channel Thanks G I appreciate it very much, keep us informed 😉!
#allthelumens. Never Enough! Training!
all of them!!
I can tell you from experience that pressure switch sucks. broke pretty fast, which I had read was the case but I risked it anyway and mounted it on the gun. the switch itself was good. not so easy to activate on accident but not hard to grab and light up. unfortunately it just stopped working out of the blue and I had to go hunt down the regular cap button and haven't gone back.
I can tell you from personal experience that I wouldn't hand a powerful light to inexperienced people. I blinded the absolute crap out of myself with a TLR HL one night on a white wall coming out of a deep sleep. Luckily it was just the cat being a prick. I recommend high lumens but with the caveat that you HAVE to actually practice with it.
Thank For Another Great Video
All long guns for home defense NEED a light. If your reason for not having one is cost (cause surefire are $200+) then buy the streamlight. it will work just fine for $100 and that's cheap insurance vs therapy for the rest of your life because you shot the wrong person. I have 3 streamlights and an Olight, so far all have been just fine, no failures. even mounted a streamlight too far forward once and it got a beating from my comp...still works just fine.
Arisaka Defense offset scout mount is a must with these lights. Check them out.
bryceduckman25 I've found their inline works great too if you want it canted on a 8 sided mlok rail.
My buddy and I ran these last week at SWAT school. After about 500 rounds (the last 100 or so were rapid fire) we noticed that our lights would not turn on. We pulled the batteries out of the light, then immediately put the same batteries back in it. This got the light working again, and we didn't have any other issues. Anyone know what the issue was? Possible heat lockout to protect the light?
Did you adjust the heads or tail caps of any if them before taking the batteries out?
I heard that can happen with rechargeable batteries.
Shot rifle for first time with this mounted to AR15. Light would not work until I tapped the body of the light. I was using tape switch and using rechargeable battery. Now worried it won’t be reliable.
Thank you

I was thinking as I watched this that only rainproof with the pressure pad is kind of crappy, but then I went to the surefire website and looked to see how waterproof the scout is with the SR07 switch and I didn't see anything, does anyone know what the waterproofness of the surefire pressure pad is?
What's the advantage to running this over the TLR-1 HL? Besides 200 more lumens and more throw? Any other benefits I'm not seeing? The hot spots looked pretty close.
The TLR-1 HL is a much more CQB oriented light, a lot more spill and far less throw. While I would be comfortable using a typical "rifle" weapon light at over 100 yards, I wouldn't try to push a TLR much past 50 yards, simply because beyond that the throw just isn't there.
The Protac will also give you the option of a tailcap button, whereas with the TLR you are stuck with either the pistol-style activation or pressure switch. Also in my experience the pressure switches for the TLRs are hit or miss, sometimes their seals are out of spec so they don't actually close fully.
tackytrooper thank you for the info. All very solid points. And for where my home is located(middle of woods and corn fields), I need all the throw I can get.
Yes for your application I would go for a dedicated rifle light 100%.
I've used TLRs on long guns before but to me at least the activation switch feels awkward when mounted anywhere but the 12:00 position.
If you can only have ONE weapon light for the foreseeable future, and you own railed pistols, get a TLR, it will be *good enough* in most applications. Otherwise, get a Protac or other dedicated long-range light.
Tacky trooper I concur about the throw on a TLR H1. Lights there but fainter past 50. Inside fifty you blind godzilla
Good stuff. Really like the flashlight reviews. How is the Surefire xc1 holding up? Thinking about picking one up.
Does the 18650 bump up the output on the streamlight to over 1000 lumens like they do on the m600df because they go up to 1500 lumens with the 18650?
yes
Lol finally something that is cheaper now than 4 years ago. Let’s go Brandon
$132 now. FJB
Can the orientation of the mount be switched around so say you wanted to mount it on an offset rail mount on the left side of the gun to where the knob would be on the bottom?
Could you slow down the light movement when testing in you back yard.
Maybe
the light itself can be used as a weapon. being hit with a brightlight all of sudden stuns you. try being being strobed with a 1000lumen flashlight, you wont know whats going on.
