Was it a police officers mouth? I thought it was a dude working on his car/truck and holding the light in his mouth. I use Streamlights personally, but I can think of about 10 instances of Surefires getting runaway batteries in them while I was in the military. Anything from smoldering to violently creating a small explosion. There was a handful of instances with SureFires and Streamlights catching fire with police officers and some recalls too. In every instance I know of, it wasn't the lights fault either, but the user putting in crappy CR123's or instead or replacing both batteries, they just replaced one creating a runaway load. I'm not saying Olight is quality, I just don't know enough about them, but I do remember when everyone was calling Holosun junk at one time and while they aren't the best red dot pistol optics around, I wouldn't hesitate in using them on my EDCs or home defense guns.
I also found the court report. I haven't looked to see if the dude was a cop, but just a dude that was working on his car. The unit had a runaway battery, pressure blew the cap back into his throat and he choked to death. The case was dismissed as it was deemed the CR123 manufacturers fault and not Olights.
thats exactly what happened, it was found to be the fault of the third party batteries they were using in the olight flashlight, but tell that to anyone who hates olight and suddenly the subject changes "MuH SuReFiRe WoNT dO ThAt"
Wasn't a cop according to the article I found, was a contractor who was working on his car:
"Caleb Joyner, of Avon, Ind., was pronounced dead at 8:30 p.m. on Wednesday at Presence St. Mary's Hospital, according to Kankakee County Coroner Bob Gessner.
The 36-year-old Joyner, who owns a remodeling and construction company, was an organ donor and several of his organs and tissue were harvested...
Gessner said Joyner was looking under the hood and bent down for a closer look. He got close to the vehicle's battery and the flashlight exploded."
I've read about the mechanism through which CR123As explode and it's called reverse charging, happens when you mix batteries at differing levels of charge which is why there's such dire warnings to never do so. So, it wasn't the Olights internal rechargeable batteries as claimed in this video, but rather the cheapo Nuon brand CR123As. That info is even displayed in the video at 26:45.
I like this channel but he got the battery issue completely ass-backwards, the use of multiple CR123As is the problem and the use of rechargeable cells is the safer solution
In Olights defense you can find examples of surefire lights that have exploded violently enough over the years they would have significantly injured or killed someone depending on how it had been held.
Yes but they haven’t, and definitely not at the rate of the Olights in the past so it’s worth noting WHY everyone has beef with Olight
@@DeskPop Are the new Olights better about not exploding? I don't follow them because of their reputation, but I see them for sale in a lot of different shops.
@@WVGunsNGoats we had dismissed them entirely but after hearing enough people I know telling me their new stuff is much better I figured it was worth giving them a shot.
The results we saw were very promising.
@@DeskPop might be worth watching them as time goes on.
You can find the police report on that olight. The person used a different battery than what the light was designed for. I think they probably should have made them in a different dimension though 😂. But the instructions have always stated to never use any other battery brand.

I don’t care what anyone says the PL turbo spanked them all in light output performance!
I bought an X300 Turbo because people kept talking crap about my use of Olight's, but my PL Turbo is brighter, has a smoother beam, runs longer, and has better switches. I genuinely hate Surefire switches. If the Olight had Streamlight switches it would be perfect.
@@chevrofreaki am agree with you on this 😂
I run the tlr7a specifically because I don't like a giant bulb poking me in the groin, and it actually has more lumen than the standard tlr1. If goon beam could produce a tlr-7a footprint with twice the lumen, or maybe maybe release a hotter replacement head or something it would really kick ass.
That’s possibly in the works
Tlr7 HLX- I got mine today and it's similarly good compared to a TLR1 HL. It's pretty damn good for a smaller light.
I researched the olight death and it wasn’t necessary the light but the after market battery that exploded however there are a lot of claims that olight likes to get people to shill for them. I own an olight baldr pro it’s better than a crimson trace that died on my M9 the first 50 shots.
Olight absolutely wants people to shill for them, I could’ve just asked them for the lights and they would’ve sent them to me and given me money to include them. Their rechargeable batteries that go boom is a major turn off
Yes that's true, it was an aftermarket battery issue and using a wrong one at that, not an olight battery issue according to the information out there. Truthfully could have happened and has happened (outside of the death) to any brand. However, still would advise stream light over olight.
@@DeskPop… but the dude explained their (Olight’s) battery didn’t go boom.
Eh. Not a winnable argument. Its like telling whoopi goldberg that trump had decent policies. Some cant see through a hate for some things or some people.

I agree with the subcompact gun lights. Also if I'm going to carry a subcompact I'll just carry a handheld that i usually have anyways. If I'm going to add weight and size to my carry I'll just carry a compact with a better light
I run Streamlight TLR7 on my G43X so that it is flush with the muzzle. My buddy runs the TLR1. Yes the TLR1 is brighter definitely past 40 yards, but 40 yard in the dark I would hope to have a rifle lol.
Also, on both the TLR1 and TLR7… the flood is great and on a pistol light is needed for the homies buddies you may not see right by him.

Glad you enjoyed it!
Late night with Deskpop! Let’s go!
First of all people really need to do there research on the bullpoop topic of olight flashlights explode. In that case Caleb Joyner was using a Olight T20 hand held flashlight. The T20 flashlight uses 2x CR123A (Non Rechargeable) or Rechargeable li-ion either 2x RCR123A 3.7v or 1x 17670 3.7v battery. The batteries is what can explode. If you use 2x CR123 batteries and one of them isn't fully charged when installed, the 1 dead one will go negative in voltage when the new one just goes dead. This is what can cause the batteries to explode. Also using 2x CR123 batteries in series parallel is dangerous by its self. All manufacturers of flashlights have had this issue so its not just Olight. I have used multiple manufacturers weapon light and Olight has been great. I've never had a issue with any of them and some of them have been abused hard with 20,000+ rounds of recoil. Ive thrown them on tables, in oil drums, in boxes. They've fell on the ground, been drug through mud dirt and gravels. Been soaked with rain and water and put away wet. They all work perfectly fine! I've had zero of them break and I've broken 3 surefire lenses. I love my surefire lights but they are expensive compared to Olight. So over the time I've used alot of Olight weapon lights to fulfill the need of not having to switch lights around on firearms. They all get a weapon light cause im all about that equality and making sure non of them feel oppressed! 😂 im glad you did add some Olight's to your test cause ultimately they are decent weapon lights!
Great video! Thank you!
Glad you liked it! Thanks for taking the time to leave a comment!!
I buy all TACTICON equipment. Love them. My light charges in 25 min and lasts over 2 hours. Very bright. I prefer over my olight mini and tlr-1
Agreed on the TLR7. Which is why I'm excited to see how the Holosun PID K does. Sure, it's not AS small, but it's a lot smaller than a TLR-1.
I have 3 olights in 2 different pl models, I’ve never had any issues with them. Since I live in Canuckistan and can’t carry I can’t really justify an expensive ’duty light’ on what are basically just range toys. They get the job done for evening plinking or less than ideal lighting at indoor ranges.
I have streamlights and olights and personally the olight feels better with the fact they’re rechargeable and usually have higher lumens for less money. I know people have had problems with them but on all my pistols I run them on and my rifle with the ODIN all have performed without flaws.
The rechargeable batteries have been very known to go boom; we also haven’t liked the output of most of their lights, seems like a falsely inflated number.
These ones however performed extremely well and definitely hit their numbers
The battery in the Olight that exploded was not a rechargeable, it was a Nuon brand CR123a primary cell. CR123a's are dangerous, and in multi-cell lights will explode if you use mixed capacity (as in, one used and one new) almost every single time. The only thing Olight got in trouble for is not putting enough warning about the dangers of CR123a cells on their packaging.
if you need a holster for any of these light hit up the dudes at Concealed Development. I bought a rig for almost all of these lights. Highly recommend them. They work with you too if you have questions which WTP did not. I am shilling for them because i was impressed with the quality.

I like olight. Most people dismissing them are gear nerds who spend 5x the price for gear while not being able to hit shit
Olight stuff is pretty great and improved MASSIVELY since their inception
Nice. When it’s dark out, there’s plenty of options to choose from! And I’d say Olight may be a GOOD choice, as it should perhaps be a feature. 😂
We call that a grenade attachment
Most of us in the lower, lower 48 won’t work at negative 109 degrees, LOL.
This channel fucks so hard, man. Great content! I'm far more open to options for carbine lights, but I only use x300s on pistols. Just never had the itch to buy another model/brand of pistol light.
I have essentially run an X300 turbskie on everything so this was pretty eye opening to me learning that I maybe don’t need to spend the $350 for a decent light
The Olight looks to be the best as far as light output
X300 turbo checking in. Worth it
Light travels faster than sound, that's why some people appear bright until you hear them speak.
Why are you talking about us so loudly???
@@DeskPop I was using my indoor voice for the algorithm. Just trying to pump your numbers up.
for a split second, I thought that was Heath Cortez. I got my SF X300 on the zon. and it let me make 6 no interest payments for like 6 months. i needed it for my fauxland special.
Pl turbo was on sale for 65 on Amazon last month.
I use the TLR1-HL over any Surefire for one reason - switches! Yes, I have a couple Surefire pistol lights, but they are not in an EDC role.
Strobe feature doesn’t get the love they deserve. As a retired combat Infantryman and former LEO with plenty of GWOT and street time, bright LED strobes will blind and disorient people. Could cause other issues, but if pointed at a threat, who cares.
Strobe limits your visual input and can absolutely result in causing a not clean kill on an unarmed assailant, or get you killed by an armed one... There’s a reason most companies do not have a strobe option!
I agree with the switches thought, the TLR-1HL has the best feeling switches by far; with surefire having the most annoying switch I’ve ever run.
Honestly in my experience and Operation Poors Olights have held up pretty well.
Lol dry ice test is crazy!
HR like actually hurt himself. He kept slowly checking.
The Olight that blew up in the guys mouth wasn’t a weapon light. It was a normal handheld flashlight with some cheap dollar store batteries. It had nothing to do with the light and everything to do with the cheap batteries he put in it.
There’s a LOT of instances of them going off, I highlighted the most lethal one- also the screenshot is a report of the incident, running Olights own batteries at the time. Their rechargeable batteries are know to fail.
@@DeskPop I guess I’ve only seen and heard of the one incident.
@@yarqwan there’s a few instances of them exploding in pockets and causing burns, and a lot of instances of their little “Baldier” lights melting on people. You can find some posts on Reddit but also Google has a surprising amount documented too
@@DeskPop I carry mine appendix for almost over a year now. No issues. Pray for my balls. 😂
That’s funny because the lawsuit was dismissed due to a non Olight battery being used. I’m not an Olight fanboy, just facts. Surefire has the most “incidents” , they also are arguably the most used.
Why do you never do a Night Vision torture test? ☹️
They make all night vision so delicate I think it would all break (also because poor poor poor)

@@AvocadoAtrocity with an *unused* $20,000 limit
Flashlight? On a pistol?
...when was the last time you ack'chually _needed_ that?
Water is relevant. Worst thing to happen would be the light dies from a little soak, we need to fight in the rain.
Freezing? Waste of time. Both batteries and LEDs are negatively effected by extreme cold, one should know this when preparing to go into ice weather. Insulating the light body would also result in overheating so this scenario, especially at -hundreds should absolutely cause issues.
I would have preferred impact testing, this we need to know: How long would they hold up getting bashed around while on? Obv a very expensive test as this will delete their value but the most valuable information also for your audience. Put them on, tape the switches off and dump them in a cement mixer.
I humbly present to you the Nightstick TWM-30. Its the TLR1-HL at home, fits the holsters for it, AND got closed out at $50.
It’s 9,000 candela, which is half the candela of the TLR-1HL
for comparison, the x300 Turbo is putting out about 60,000 candela
@@DeskPop
Sure......but its also $50 and for use on my pistol, where its never going to shoot more than 25 yards, its pretty great 😉
Olight handheld were the bad ones...I'm betting olight will do fine and im only 2 mins in..I run a few of them and never an issue.
Who makes the LA Police Gear weapon light? I like it better then my scout and Streamlite H1
China
I prefer the lack of hot spot with my TLR-1. It doesn't drown out the red dot as much.
TLR7 sub might not be blinding, but I gotta say, the extra weight is nice on some of the smaller guns. I really hope Goonbeam fixes the reflector in the sub and bring it into line with the Sig offering which manages close to 17,000 candela.
PS. The individual who died from the Olight was using an aftermarket Nuon branded battery, and they were working on their car. Other than that, it appears that the OE batteries don't explode. Olight however does underperform in a multitude of other ways, and Werkz Holsters/lowlightdefense does cover these shortcomings extensively on their channel/website.
PSS. I have gone back and forth with the guys at Goonbeam. They do more than just replacing the emitter, they also change the reflector, and the switches are improved (more tension and less chance of an WML ND).
Worth noting that Isn’t the only report of them exploding. The Nuon battery was what the flashlight came with, and they’ll are absolutely correct on the CR123 thing; that’s why I didn’t mention the one where an officer had the light explode in his pocket and cause him third degree burns.
The Baldiers specifically are known for having battery issues/melting gun frames in the past so I figured it was worth including.
These ones did great; they seem very well made.
My tlr broke off my glock putting it back in the holster , idk why but the bolt snapped on the claw side
I didn’t expect the o light to beat the surefire in looks too bad they blow up

2.3 whole lumens?
CR123s have a risk of exploding if they are run back-to-front and their charge levels differ. It can create a thermal runaway event. The olight that exploded was in this config. I suspect they went to internal rechargeable to avoid it happening again.
When you run them in series, side to side, it's less likely to happen. At that point it being an olight is irrelevant since X300 lights have the same config.

You basically tested these as handheld flashlights and not really as a weapon-mounted lights, would love to see you take a second stab at this mounted on a gun and seeing how they handle and function under recoil on a gun, now that you already own them
Tbh we figured that would be a given; they all handle recoil no issue, I also verified that none of them “flicker” under recoil like streamlight and cloud weapon lights!!
