I have more Streamlights than any other. They are hands down best bang for the buck. Though I'm not a fan of the proprietary battery on their new HLX 2.0 so I'll never be using those.
Something that wasn't mentioned I wanted to bring up, is if you're wanting to use a pressure pad that requires the surefire style connection, don't be discouraged if you have a streamlight. Arisaka makes a tailcap adapter that will allow you to use any of the plethora of aftermarket and surefire branded pressure pads.

My HLXs have universally had short lived pressure switches...I love the cloud defensives but they're ridiculously expensive and the proprietary switch is sturdy, but kind of uncomfortable.
...And then my cheap $98 OLIGHT Javelot goes and beats both the Rein 1.0 and 2.0 in throw. It was depessing.

Worth mentioning that new production, "original" ProTac Rail Mount HL-X's (i.e., standard or remote-only tailcap and momentary or constant pressure pad) have also been the beneficiary of the emitter upgrade ;)

Streamlight has been my go-to WML for pretty much everything. I recently started messing around with LEP lights, which give really high candella, I am generally most interested in shooting longer ranges in low light, I've got a Zbolt, as well as a few olight valkyrie turbos. Nightstick is another newer brand, however most of their offerings are within a few dollars of the Streamlight offerings, not a compelling reason to change.

I’ve had my SL hlx rail mount for a good while (3-4 years i think) and the only thing I’ve broken on it is the lens. To be fair i don’t do a lot of night shooting and only use the switch when i dry fire in the garage or actually get to shoot at night. I’d say most people are in the same boat as me though so it’s probably more than good enough for most.

Giant spill, not great range, the lights have an intermittent issue where they turn on bright then quickly flicker down to barely visible. But only sometimes. All of that plus the damn price, yeah my HLX's have had no issues.
Maybe SF's pistol lights are better but at this point I'm not even going to try them.

  • @rondobrondo

That's the issue with Candela (CD) and lumens (LM) in general. 1cd = 1lm / sr. This is not a favorable equation for flashlights if you want to still have a usable area of spill and floor. This is because, sr = steradian (square radian, one square radian of a general sphere can be calculated using an equation A = r², with r representing the radius of a sphere.). And this is also not really that favorable for physics either. What ends up happening is that you need almost 4x the candela to 'double' the visible throw. So what you need to do then is greatly decrease the size of the illuminated area, and that means greatly reducing the flood and spill. And so the reason the AWLS doesn't really seem that much brighter at longer distances is because it's not really gonna make a big difference compared to the latest 50,000 candela streamlights. A like with 100,000 candela isn't twice as bright at longer ranges, it's more more like 36% brighter

    • @FocusTripp

Keep in mind the batteries they are using, the rechargeable ones die verry fast in relaly cold and hot weather, even tho they are more powerful, and after they are death you are out of luck!! They can die within 5 min, completely death! As for the alkalines ones like cr123 ams so on, they will last much longer, down to minus 20 you still can use them, and when they are death you juat swap them, when you cant so that with the other ones, or you might, but a battery is like 25$ each and then in 5 kin dies from the extreme variations of temps. Why do you think the SF people dont use rechargeable ones?

If Goonbeam isn't in the discussion, it's not complete. My Goonbeam Long V1 overpowers my Modlite OKW.
PS. For those curious Goonbeam does more than just use a Streamlight body, I have emailed them and they are definitely flashlight nerds. They also make handhelds.
I should add that the Valhalla Tactical PDG head seems pretty interesting.

The proprietary battery on the HLX Pro is a complete non-starter for me. Their website says it will accept 2 CR123 as well, so I wonder if it will take a standard 18650?

Yes, they use the same body, but you need to email and talk with them a bit. They change reflectors and emitters among other things. My Short V1 has better switches than my TLR1, and my Long V1 is hotter than my Modlite OKW, albeit a bit colder in terms of CRI.@FocusTripp

@FocusTripp I think so. I would probably choose the RM2 instead. I was torn between the RMs and the TLR. Caught the RM on sale. It is great for a small light. I wouldn't go to war with it, but it is lightweight and easy to use for a HD gun light.

Streamlight sucks! You get what you pay for with Streamlight HLX Protac. I bought two of them, and 1 basically broke under minimal use within a few months. I'd rather buy a Surefire G2X tactical, even with just a push button.

Been a fan of Streamlight for many years,as you stated"best bang for your buck",I am very much interested in the new Holosun light that works in conjunction w/their Iris laser/IR illuminator. If what i've seen is correct, the laser/IR illuminator & the light are separate, both mount to your rifle,& have a switch to plug into both units,& both can be bought together for about $900/1000,which to me is fairly reasonable for a laser/IR illuminator & light. I also under stand they can be bought separately.
