My grandfather was with the 7th Infantry, 73rd Heavy Tanks during the Korean War. They called the ppsh41 “the burp gun,” and it would turn guys into “Swiss cheese.” He never said anything else about that weapon, but the way he talked about it left me with the impression that it was universally hated.
Koreans used to call ppsh-41 as 'ddabal chong(따발총)', which means it can shoot lots of rounds. The word 'ddabal chong' has now become an common pronoun which stands for every full auto firearms. It was definitely an impressive firearm for all soldiers and civilians in Korea at the time...
I've been serving in the French military for 18 years and did many missions in Africa and Afghanistan, I can tell you the FN FNC and the FN FAL are VERY COMMON in Africa. I don't know why but I never encountered rebels with French FAMAS or US M16/M4, but they nearly all used either some sort of AK variant or a FN Belgian assault rifle FAL or FNC... For a small country, Belgium managed to sell their excellent firearms worldwide !
I was in the Australian military from 1985-1988 and I loved my SLR, as you'll no doubt know, the commonwealth version of the FN FAL but semi-auto only in most models. It was bloody heavy but it was a beautiful thing. We'd argue about who'd get to carry the squad M-16 on exercises, because it was so much lighter but, and as history has proven wrong, we all assumed the heavier bullet had more punch. Ok, it does have more punch - the 7.62 would go straight through the sides of our M113s, where the .556 would bounce, but as we all now know, most contact ranges are in the low hundreds of metres and you can carry more .556 for the same weight, not even including the weight of the rifle. Anyway. Like most people of my generation and background, the FN FAL holds a special place in my heart. And I remained the company champion at stripping and reassembling the SLR blindfolded for the entire time I was serving. Possibly being a guitarist gave me dexterity on both hands that some didn't have :D My time was over before the Aussteyr became a thing. We didn't even have helmets. Oh, and Vive la France! Love the place and the people. Before brexshit, I was planning on retiring to the Bearn. But after the Poms went and shat the bed, we decided we'd go back to Oz instead. We could possibly still retire to France but it's much much more difficult and as we've had a life in the UK for 25 years, I wouldn't want to lose that to get French citizenship. Assuming we could. We were even taking lessons in Francais before 2016, but stopped when it looked like we wouldn't be moving. I've had too much coffee this morning, I think.

Former Swedish soldier here, the Ak5 series are basically license produced FN FNCs. Can't say a lot of good things about the Ak5C either. It's heavy, it's really sensitive to cold (ironic for a weapon used by the Swedish military) and the plastic magazines used for it didn't fit our standard MOLLE pouches. I'm sure I'm NOT, since I know history of this weapon making and also, I can find on the website of "Forgotten Weapon" manual for AF-1916 written in 1923, where its explains what an "avtomat" is, and its primary mode of fire in full automatic mode, but not in the same long fashion like a heavy MG, because it's a carbine, so sparing full auto bursts are highly advised to preserve ammo, weapon longevity and weapon overheating(but it is not forbidding to empty full magazine on full auto mode). Portuguese Army just recently moved away from the G3 (7,62) to the SCAR! About 3/4 years they started fielding the SCAR to the forces that are deployed in NATO or UN missions. Portugal has a lot of G3 (and I mean a lot), our Marines still use the G3 with the Spear upgrade kit, but our Marines are just plain crazy because the say nothing kills like a 7,62!

Personally, I think the vehicles being used in Ukraine are weirder than the small arms. FNCs performed terribly in Moschun 5-12 march that I was there. Westerners were issued these rifles and they had feeding issues as well as them getting filled with sand and just failing at every turn. Bren 2 is an absolute gem of a rifle. Been running it for almost a year. It's just a better Scar.

Only bad thing about the 7.62x25 Tokarev round used in PPsh41 is that no one make a modern pistol using this round. Its a real shame too as it is a peppy little round I believe more shooters would enjoy if there was a modern pistol for it instead of a 70year old CZ52 or even older TT33.

Just few years ago, the MG3(the 7,62mm nato sister of the MG42) was the sevice weapon for German Gunners. And it is still one of the best machine guns in 7,62mm nato. There are a lot very good guns from WWII. Mosin Nagant, PPSH, Colt 1911, Mauser k98, Tommy Gun, Tokarev, I would say all of these and much more are still good today.
It's still the standard MG of the German army. The MG 5 and MG 4 just fill a gap and are a try of HK to sell more weapons besides the fact, that the MG3 is until today the best you can get.
I took mental notes of the firearms I saw in Ukraine last year. No I didn’t go fight, but I went for other reasons. The first one was an AKS-74u that a Ukrainian soldier had slung around himself. Saw several AK-74s, a couple AKM rifles, an RPD, an unknown gun with a long barrel and a Makarov or two, but can’t confirm as I only saw the base of the magazine sticking out from under a holster flap. I did overhear a conversation about how this one soldier needed to get a “new holster for his Makarov”. One soldier I saw on two or three occasions carried an AR-15 Carbine, but am unsure if it was select-fire or not. It had an A2 front sight, Magpul flip up rear sight and in my opinion looked like the Springfield Saint, but with key mod options. Also the barrel appeared to be 12.5” long. I noticed the Ukrainian men tended to have AK-74s with the folding stocks and the women carried ones with fixed stocks. Both AKM rifles had wood furniture and fixed stocks.
Informed conjecture on my part but men carrying folding stocks and women carrying fixed stock AK-74s is probably because the men do the assaulting while the women would more likely be shooting from a fixed distance. In Iraq back in 2006-2007, I was actually one of the first to be able to buy a Magpul variable length stock and threw it on my SBR M4 while doing urban assaulting for better handling. In an assault, I'd set the stock to "stubby" mode, or retracted all the way in, if I were tasked with being the point man or second-man-in for that day. Folding stocks were never popular in the US military because Hollywood tended to depict folding stocks as something criminals used to hide a weapon. Plus a number of states in the US have an outright ban on them, including where I live.

So much love for the PPSh for that insane rate of fire and that STG44's beautiful mechanical sound as it cycles. I'd give anything for either of those.
Just to add something. There was one recent near-peer conflict: Armenia vs azerbajain. It was mostly drones vs T-72 and kind of foreshadowed what we're seeing in Ukraine.
Azerbaijan war was the opposite of Ukraine. In Ukraine, no sides have clear air superiority. In Azerbaijan, Azerbaijan had clear air superiority. Ukraine is a slow attrition war. Azerbaijan war was a fast blitzkrieg. Ukraine is being invaded by Russia. Azerbaijan was freeing its UN recognized lands under armenian invasion.
What do you mean? It's not really anything like that conflict. Russia has superior artillery, tanks, a navy, and an airforce, as well as more drones. Ukraine hasn't even been able to effectively use the drones that they have been given. Though, they have no navy, airforce, and not as many tanks and most importantly, artillery.
2nd Karabakh was near-peer in the loosest sense of the word. It was 44 day Bayraktar exhibition, armenians were getting bombed like Wehrmacht in '45 (in their infinite wisdom they embezzled the cash designed for AA modernisation.)

Interesting detail: soldier on the right in 10:54 wears ROA patch - ROA short for Russian Libration Army (Русская Освободительная Армия), was a unit composed of Russian anti-communists and POWs who fought on the side of Germany, but eventually fought also against Germans in Prague in 1945. This symbolic is still used by many Russians, especially far-right who fight on Ukrainian side. This is an old photo, from the beginning of the invasion of two Russian brothers who fought on Ukraine's side, I believe their father also fought. I believe one or both of them died in defense of Kyiv in 2022.

It’s 3 holes there isn’t one on the bottom so all the gas just goes out the top so when dealing with a gun firing at the rate of “oh dear lord I’m already out of ammo” instead of it rising from recoil it dips down keeping you on target which takes accuracy by volume to a new level

Why is it first assault rifle, is it because it is not good in defense? BTW Fedorov's AF-1916 was a first in that class of weapon that calls actually an "Avtomat", since WWI.
@@RussianThunderrr An auto rifle is not an assault rifle. Otherwise we'd have to say the Italian Cei-Rigotti predates the Fedorov and we'd have to call the BAR an assault rifle, which it is not. -- Do I? I'm sure I'm NOT, since I know history of this weapon making and also, I can find on the website of "Forgotten Weapon" manual for AF-1916 written in 1923, where its explains what an "avtomat" is, and its primary mode of fire in full automatic mode, but not in the same long fashion like a heavy MG, because it's a carbine, so sparing full auto bursts are highly advised to preserve ammo, weapon longevity and weapon overheating(but it is not forbidding to empty full magazine on full auto mode). And also unlike BAR which is LMG(Light Machine Gun or Russ. Ручной Пулемёт(Hand-Held Machine-Gun)) like Lewis LMG, Degteriev's-1928 or Kalashnikov's RPK(that featured in this video) which is Squat fire support weapon, and not an "Every Squat member" personal weapon, like AF-1916 or STG-44 or AK-47. In case you wondering what "A" means in Russian abbreviation of Soviet weapons, yet it does not exist in a SMG(Sub Machine Gun) class weapons, because PPSh-41 or PPD-40 or PPS-43 are not classified as an "Avtomat" because it uses "pistol" round, hence "Пистолет-Пулимёт" similar to German MP(MaschinenPistole). The SCAR is also a Belgian rifle! I commented on how heavy it was and the soldiers told me yeah just be happy you don't have to carry the previous guns (FAL and FNC) as they have a lot more metal in them
The FAL is stupid light for what it is lol.
But the heaviness Of the FNC makes it super EZ to keep sighted in on target and put those rounds down range accurately.
Lots of FALs being used too
Carried a FAL during a training exercise all day and it sure as fuck isn't as fun to carry as an M4 not to mention the weight difference in carrying a shitload of magazines
The new US service rifle is like several pounds heavier and worse in pretty much every way to the SCAR... pretty the soldiers will love carrying it, lol.

Personally, I think the vehicles being used in Ukraine are weirder than the small arms. You’ve got 122mm rocket tubes from BM-21 Grads attached to civilian trucks, a collapsible communications tower on a UTE, commercial drones of all sorts performing roles ranging from artillery spotting to guided munitions, and all manner of modifications on both sides to MT-LB artillery tractors. All of these are (to me at least) far more interesting than “ha ha, old gun being used in 2023.”
Exactly. This is just a shameless likewhore video, would be far more interesting to hear about the actual weird shit being used in this war. Hell they don't even call it a war on this channel.

FNCs performed terribly in Moschun 5-12 march that I was there. Westerners were issued these rifles and they had feeding issues as well as them getting filled with sand and just failing at every turn.

Only bad thing about the 7.62x25 Tokarev round used in PPsh41 is that no one make a modern pistol using this round. Its a real shame too as it is a peppy little round I believe more shooters would enjoy if there was a modern pistol for it instead of a 70year old CZ52 or even older TT33.
you just never used the Tula tokarev (TT). too powerful cartridge. the gun can withstand no more than 800 shots, after that it breaks. This cartridge is not suitable for semi-automatic pistols.
@@nickspistolsfl9736 Unfortunately I do not have a TT33 in my collection. I do have a CZ52 that takes 7.62x25 Tokarev round. The Czech's designed it to take a hot load and it handles 7.62x25 without any issues. I have shot several hundred rounds through it, both surplus and new rounds from Prvi Partisan, Fiocchi and Sellier-Belliot. Only fault I have with the CZ52 is it holds only 7 + 1 rounds.

All those billions and no new weaponry? Learn up, and keep "voting"

Or could turn out that Russian armor was overestimated and the Spear is a mistake. 5.56 remains an excellent workhorse of a caliber.
Unless we are rocking explosive payloads in our infantry rifles. That 6.8 will quickly be resisted by armor due to the ease of upgrading it.

Very informative video.
Gotta ask, what jacket are you wearing?
There's also some ex-FDF Chinese Type 56's that were sent there in the first aid packages sent from Finland. Some snipers also use Sako TRG's.
Azerbaijan was clearly a higher tier than Armenia, I’d hesitate to call it near-peer
@@ianhines2302 I guess technically before the war most of us would also have put Russia in higher tier than Ukraine. Clearly, though, training, doctrine and command decision making matter A LOT. (And Russia's are hilariously bad, more than we thought)
First vid ive seen from you guys and it was dope! Seems like yall would be some cool friends
Man, I watched this video on my last night at The Whittington Center in Raton New Mexico with my buddies. Getting comfortable with my firearms, honing my capabilities, and my 5 buddies I came with all did the same. We pushed the limits of what I would have once considered impossible. Thank you guys for the excellent content. Never stop boys!!!
Lol
Loved this vid. First time I’ve seen your channel. Very laid back, casual, entertaining, and educational. I’m a vet from Texas but I learned a lot from this. Air traffic controllers in the Navy don’t shoot a lot of guns but we did have basic training and got to shoot several firearm systems on the range.
Welcome to the community! Stick around, check out some of his older stuff, this is a great place to be.
Glad we finally got a follow-up review for the CZ Bren
For anyone who is looking for the songs in the intro - they use a combination of 2 songs, both by Audiomachine: "Anacreon" and "Canoga Paradox"
Interesting
I hope they both did ;)

Great overview of the F/A's used in this modern conflict. Thanks for taking the time to put this type of content out there! Educational, and Entertaining. You guys are nailing it!
Your content creation is so beautiful, these videos are so informative and put together so well, so much content in one video! The dramatic drill edits, music, audio and video quality are fantastic. All of that on top of the little history lessons on calibers and firearms.
familar pfp, i think its from some 8bit rpg

We appreciate you Garand Thumb. Always enjoy getting schooled on firearms. Can't wait for next video.
I’ve seen the Bren 2 a lot in footage from Ukraine, so when I got the chance to check one out I had to get it. It’s my favorite rifle right now.
I just know there has to be numerous military observers from different countries treating this conflict as a treasure trove of modern semi-conventional strategies and tactics. The war fought here is going to be influencing a lot of military doctrines to come for the next 50 years, at least.
You really think the current technology will be stagnant for 50 years? Technology advances exponentially, after all.
@@ultimatefattie9022 Not quite how it works. Doctrine always lags behind technology. Today, we still incorporate WW1 tactics in some of our defense doctrine.
@@23rdMS_InfNot to mention they're using trench warfare from WW1 in Ukraine in 2023
@@23rdMS_Inf Sun Tzu tactics still apply. Tactics and moral beat tech. Tech only gives an edge.
Seriously, there are people that have beaten tanks with axes. At that point a tank is basically firewood.

I hope to get one as well!
They are not well regarded according to the SBU Alpha operator I know. They much prefer M4s over there (and he gets issued Sig MCX)
@cam Any info on what complaints there are about it? From what I know we only sent out the A0 and A1 versions which had a few minor problems, whereas the A2 is being phased in currently and as far as we know there are no complaints about previous issues as they have been corrected.
@@rekerboi1125 Issues with jamming was the major complaint. And then minor complaints were the pinned muzzle brake and that it is a little heavy. He never specified which version though

Really amazing video, i like your opinions and how well you know your guns. Cool video, made me subscribe.
The cartridge ripper employed in the PKM is a stroke of genius. The 7.62 x54R is the only rimmed round that I know of still being fielded (and quite successfully) by modern militaries-John in Texas
Saw STG-44s in Syria too and I just want to know where the hell these people are getting 7.92 Kurz from?
Several European manufacturers still make ammunition for it in significant quantities
Fantastic video!
I would add the MG3 though (14:46)
This weapon also has “kind” of an history fighting in that region.
Honestly the fact that there was a prop plane that dogfight a drone was crazy enough
Thank you, Mr. Thumb. 😉 Yet another awesome episode with lots of cool hardware!

STG44 is my favorite ever gun. Just so ahead of it’s time and an incredible innovation medium center fire cartridges in a fully-auto/semi-auto package.
Amazing video and i love that the STG44 and PPSH are still finding use.
Yeah, the Sturm44 really travels still. Seen it in African /Cuban conflicts in Angola, way back then too.
Awesome video as always, extremely thorough and informative. Great to see all those guns that are currentlymin corculation.
