    In this 3D modeling tutorial in Maya 2017 we will step it up a bit and start to model a slightly more complex mesh. This video will explain how to model a water bottle with a handle. After modeling it we will texture and render it in Keyshot.

    First off, thanks for all the great tutorials, you've been a big help. I just wanted to say that at 10:35 or so when you were using the Multi-Cut tool, you can simply hold down shift to snap the cut to the exact center of the line.

    hey Mike, the problem you are facing at 11:22ish... next time you use the tool, hold down shift before left clicking on your object.. works like in photoshop when you want a straight line :)

    11.06, while using Multi-cut, place the razor on the edge with SHIFT key pressed, you can see it snapping to 50% exactly.

    Hi Mike, just wanted to let you know that with the Multi Cut Tool, you can hold I think it's Shift to lock onto the centre of a line.

    To make it more realistic, instead of turning two sided off, give the model a realistic thickness and index of refraction of plastic.

    Your question asked what do we consider a complex object? To answer I would say modular pieces that share/draw-from the same texture maps are proving the hardest for me.
    I am learning this stuff backwards, having started with modding, re-texturing vanilla assets, to modeling and making my own assets currently. But I can't figure out how the devs make modular hall sets (for example) with snapping pieces that consist of short/mid/long, 1-way/2-way/3-way/4-way etc variants of the same hall, all which use the same diffuse/specular/normal maps.
    I have tried to make such halls, and it's not hard to make the pieces, but to make the UV work with all the variants doesn't work out. I get the impression the UV is made for the base model first, and the variants are made afterwards, with the UV shells that are different, being placed in the 0-1 space around the base model's shells. It's tricky to describe, and it's really tricky to pull off. :)
    That's my answer, and it's also my first request. I would love to learn how to make this sort of thing. ;)
    Now onto tackling this tutorial. :D

    • @MHTutorials3D
      @MHTutorials3D  7 лет назад

      Griffin, look at it like Lego bricks. By rearranging them they look different every time while they are the same objects with the same textures etc

    • @griffinleadabrand1474
      @griffinleadabrand1474 7 лет назад

      Hi Mike. Thanks for replying. I'm quite familiar with the kinds of assets used by game developers, and I know what you mean, but it wasn't really what I meant.
      If I could get you to look at this image of a tileset from a mod for Fallout 3 for example -
      media.moddb.com/images/downloads/1/36/35952/Vault_FEF_Chamber_Expanded_Tiles.jpg
      The tileset has many variant pieces and the objects pretty much all share the same textures. I am guessing that this outcome is achieved carefully during the UV unwrapping stage, but the workflow is eluding me. :)

    it will not pick the entire edge loop on the cap at around 7:05 because the top is an ngon. you can either select the top face and then extrude in to create quads and then select the loop or you can select the top face and the convert to edge loop to get the top loop or just manually select each edge as you did.

    10:10 If you shift+click and drag with the multi cut tool you'll move up in increments of 10% so you don't have to eyeball 50%

    To me a complex object is something like a car. I read what you said about the car below, but I guess I mean the body of a modern sports car can be tricky to get correct. Something with subtle curvature that doesn't just boil down to a cylinder. Idk if any of this makes sense. I've just finished my first modelling class ever and our 2 main assignments were a car and a weapon asset.

  • @tondann

    I would not consider this as a complex object but I learned something anyways! For me personally complex are objects like cars, highly detailed guns etc. In conclusion stuff that you find on Artstation. It would say this is a beginner's tutorial, maybe advanced beginner but in no way a complex model.
    Just my opinion

    • @MHTutorials3D
      @MHTutorials3D  7 лет назад +5

      Dannton, a car is not a complex object. It is a series of simple one that take a lot of time, that's all. I mentioned in the video that it is slightly more complex and also stated "what do you find complex" But I appreciate your opinion

    • @tondann
      @tondann 7 лет назад +2

      Mike Hermes you are right. If you really break it down, every object is just a result of many extrusions and cuts. The only difficulty is to maintain a good topology and edge flow depending on the type of model.

    I have a question, that probably has a very easy answer, but I'm brand new to 3D modelling so I thought I'd ask. I have something I've been working on in Blender, but I'm wanting to get it into Maya, is this possible? I don't personally own Maya so it could be something as simple as opening the file in Maya, but I wanted to make sure I knew going in. Thanks for the great tutorials, I've watched a lot of them and it's convinced me to try Maya :)

    • @MHTutorials3D
      @MHTutorials3D  7 лет назад

      Export your file out of Blender in OBJ or FBX format. This will allow you to import it into Maya without any trouble. You can download a 3 year free student license from www.autodesk.com

    probably not the place to ask such questions but interesting enough I can't find a proper explanation how to make an object to vibrate, like phone vibration!

    • @MHTutorials3D
      @MHTutorials3D  7 лет назад

      The best and easiest way to do that is by manually keyframing the animation.

    • @josephbrandenburg4373
      @josephbrandenburg4373 6 лет назад

      A phone vibrates faster than the frame speed of most animation. You'll have to do some motion blur in composite to make it look like it's vibrating faster than you can animate. I don't know if Maya has a compositer, but you can probably use After Effects. I would recommend trying Blender's node-based compositer, if you haven't yet.

    Hey Mike, Quick question. When you were bridging the sides of the Jug where you took out the faces to make the handle, would it have made things easier to add one division to the bridge? I think it would have made the multi-cuts that followed faster? Just a thought.

    In a lot of your tutorials you use Key Shot. Is it okay if we skip that part of the 3d modeling tutorial and just use the texture settings which Maya can offer? Good Tutorial :) And just a question, I really really need that. When You export from maya to keyshot it doesn't export Lights that were on the scene. How can you export them too to Keyshot? I need those or the project won't be the same, I'm waiting for your answer :3
    (sorry for any error or bad english, I'm italian XD)

    • @MHTutorials3D

      The only way to do that is by "baking your lights" onto the textures in Maya before exporting to Keyshot. But I can not see why you would want to do that as keyshot has a wide range of lights

      Always use a reference. Reference is everything.

      I respectfully disagree. As an artist it is important to train your eye to model from memory ( on occasion )

      It is a very common thing done by artists whether they draw, paint or model. Training your self to remember proportions, scale etc help to develop a mind that can think in 3D space
