The toilet flange is not supposed to be flush with the finished floor, it's supposed to be above it; the outlet pipe of the toilet and the closet flange are a male/female fitting, with the flange going up and around the outlet for the toilet. That's why closet flanges have the bevel on the inside. Minimum gap is left, and the male part of the outlet is INSIDE the female part of the flange, with the famale part acting like dam for any water/pressure. Then the wax from the wax ring is compressed on both sides instead of being open on one side.
Was this in a concrete subfloor or wood? And thanks for this video my parents got a house with a bathroom in the separate garage and the previous owner screwed it up so bad luckily this kit will fix one problem
