It would be nice to test these hatchback compacts with a rear collision, eg. 50km/h while the vehicle is in stop position. Look at how small the trunk is, and the rear passengers almost touch to the trunk door.
In frontal collision the sensors are being activated from the deforming of the whole body I suppose, as there's no reason for them go off in a frontal collision, so they're activated as a consequence.(Yea I find it stupid too they could be positioned better I suppose) If you see at 1:25 they are activated correctly as the sensors are hit directly.
When you activate the sides more early or at the same rate as the front airbags, during a frontal collision you will push away the driver to the side, and he will not hit the front airbag straight on... Not that hard to come up with that yourself now is it?
