Great video, nice to see the Mk2 Aygo get its well deserved praise. You seemed to have the air on recirculate when you said about it steaming up, that'll make things worse, always have it on outside air coming in. Also, they don't have cruise control, only a speed limiter, which is a shame. I've had a mk1 (C1 and 107), I bought a Mk2 (C1) new in 2014 and bought a new Aygo X last year. They've all been brilliant and I would definitely recommend the Aygo X, love it's added refinement and spec (mainly adaptive cruise) over the older ones.
Thanks for the tips, Chris. Appreciate it. Yes, I whiffed on the cruise control and I've been meaning to leave a pinned comment with an amendment. I know a few people have mentioned that they aren't a fan of the Aygo speed limiter, but I find it rather handy! At the very least, it stops you adding points to your license. Nice to hear you are enjoying the Aygo X, too. That is the obvious upgrade for myself going forward.
@@jamieaygo yes the speed limiter can be very useful, and definitely better than not having anything. I looked at a lot of cars before I bought the Aygo X, but they make a lot of sense if you don't need a bigger car. The reviews always focus on the old engine, but to me that's one of the biggest selling points - it's proven for reliability, it's frugal and fun to use.
Agreed! I think the consistency of the Aygo line (and probably most of Toyota's products in general) is something that is taken for granted. You just don't need to worry about turning that ignition on and not having that engine burst into life. Remarkable, really. I have swayed between opinions on the Aygo X and the more I look at it, the more I think Toyota got the marketing wrong on it. Yes, it's a larger Aygo which is the part I struggle with as I like the compactness of the MK2, but it has A LOT of safety kit as standard, which I think they should have leaned on more. I don't think there are many cars in the 10-15K range that offer that level of safety focused tech and reliability for that money. Really solid value offering. It's just the compactness I'd miss but I'm guessing rival success like the Suzuki Ignis forced them to look at the Aygo in a different way.
I genuinely can't phantom why RUclips recommended this video to me given I'm in a market that never got the Aygo but this was a great video! Wish we'd get more A segment cars in NA.
It’s quite a fun car to drive. But I don’t understand the comments on the clutch. This is usually a quick adjustment, there’s no need to live with a high clutch point. Also you should leave AC on all the time. Makes the inside nicer and keeps the windows clear.
perhaps its a hydraulic clutch like many cars these days that run off the brake fluid reservoir, I don't believe you can adjust these like the old cable operated clutches of the 80s and 90s that had a manual adjuster on them.
Ive had my MK2 Xtrend since I got it new as my first car in 2019. I love it, whilst it is a city car and perfect for short journeys, Ive also found it capable enough on long distances (as long as you have a lumbar cushion). I drove from the UK to the Alps earlier this year with 4 adults all our luggage and a roof box without any issues across the 2000 mile round trip. Super economical too averaging over 50mpg even with the weight. Only issue is with a full car it does struggle to get up any hill steeper than flat! Id do it all again and can’t see myself changing any time soon, its great fun to own and brilliant with the reliability and cheap running costs
That is one EPIC journey! I've found it no bother on long journeys, too. I went from Yorkshire to Brighton and it was spot on. I did have a seat support, though. I am a HUGE fan of how reliable and cheap it is to run, too!
Great video again!😃 My Aygo is now 2 years old (bought it brandnew) and I still like it very much!😃 Despite its cheapness and according to some people who make fun of the Aygo because its small, its the best car I’ve ever had so far! Reliability is very important to me!
Couldn't agree more! I absolutely love mine. I think you made the right call going for the auto. I might just have to pick one up, ha! If I upgrade to the Aygo X in future, I would definitely explore that option.
my mom has the 1st gen aygo and it's crazy how similar the 2nd gen is: super high biting point; uncomfortable seats; spacious in front seats but cramped in the back; snappy in first 3 gears, but sluggish on the highway. Still I like 2nd gen more, it looks better and has some quality-of-life improvements
A good summary really. I think Toyota went with a "If it isn't broke, don't fix it" mentality for the internals and really focused on some quality of life improvements and a make over, as you say.
I have the Peugeot 107, and it is very repair-friendly. I changed the brakes, sparkplugs, and oil myself. The wheel bearings were my most expensive repair in the 4 years of ownership.
I've a 06 reg Citroen C1 we bought back in 2017... Its been sort of looked after and I cant fault it. My other half upgraded to a Citroen DS3 and I got rid of the Citreon C3 and started using the C1. Cheap, Reliable, easy to park, easy to repair. If ask for a radio Facia and some new speakers for the dash as thats all it has seen as im doing a 25 mile commute from monday for the forgoing future. Idea is to make it last another year and make it like yours more comftable to drive on a budget. Depending on how much business travel i will end up doing then i may need to look else where but with its toyota engine its almost bullet proof. As a first car or a car not doing so many miles its a must recomment from me!
I bought a Peugeot 108 in February this year, basically the same car, I have done quite a lot to make the most of what I've got such as upgrading the speakers, adding the CarPlay head unit, installing my own reversing camera and aftermarket alloy wheels and wider tyres. But the things that I've done that have made a massive difference, which is when I first came across your videos was adding sound deadening and acoustic foam on the insides of the doors and the rear panels (3 door), I also removed the carpet in the boot and added sound deadening/acoustic foam and covered it in carpet, using the wheel well as a place to put a couple of storage boxes. Also, I managed to get some OEM wind deflectors which have made a massive difference with the steaming up issue that you mentioned, they're really slick and were so simple to install. I absolutely love my little car and the comments you made about the parking are absolutely true, although it takes a little while to get up to speed on the motorways (it's also the 1 litre version) it's really nippy around town and I can't really fault it apart from one thing, which I am wondering if you are having the same issue, the top brake light seems to let in water and it collects in the "spoiler" above the rear window, which finds its way down into the boot or leaks out of the brake light, I have been meaning to take it out and add some grease to stop the water from getting in, but with the bad weather I am waiting for the water that is currently in there to evaporate/find its way out before sealing it up.
Nice observation on the wind deflectors. I am planning to pick some up, too. I imagine they make a bit of difference to the sound profile of the car as well. I think one thing I have noticed is not in the top brake light per se, but on the main rear lights is that they sometimes have condensation build up in them, which I know is a common fault on these cars but was way more prevalent on the MK1 versions of the Aygo. You definitely have the right idea of waiting for better weather to dry them out. For me, it seems to happen more so on the driver side than the passenger. I'll be looking for some new seals in the near future most likely.
The clutch of the aygo can be adjusted fairly easily. It is "only" pulling out and turning a plastic "screw" along the clutch cable (there are Videos of it on youtube - it is kind of iffy to reach and better if you have a friend to push and pull the clutch pedal to get the cable out of its Fixation - still doable though)
Great video fella. 7:27 that bit of information is the vital part for me. I have lower back issues and sciatica if I'm sat for a short while. I'd need regular breaks no matter the car, but if they're on the uncomfortable side, that's a no go... Cheers.
I regularly do journeys of 2 hours in mine and have no problems at all, I find it very comfortable and with a height adjustable seat too I can get a really good driving position.
The gen 2 auto was my first car. It was a base model, so it was bare bones. I liked it as a first car, but I quickly bought another car. I needed more space and power for motorway driving. If there is one thing about the car I didn't like was a clutch. It was unbearable when setting off up hills. I learnt in a diesel audi A3. I stalled the aygo plenty of times whilst getting used to it. Also, no hill assist on my aygo. So that was fun. It was also pretty uncomfortable on the motorway, too.
I like the aygo as a city car and my girlfriend has a 1 gen C1 which is nice. I’ve driven the 2nd gen agyo and while it has some more features I do think it’s stearing, specially on high speed, is more vague and doesn’t give me the control that I want. For short trips the aygo is perfect although for me being 202cm I don’t want to drive it for to long because the seating position is bad.
Interesting observation on the steering. I am thinking of getting a MK1 as a project car at some point, so I am really intrigued as to how they compare.
Apparently the earlier ones are more peppy. Between Mk1 facelifts there's a difference in ride height and gearing (especially between second facelift and first/pre-facelift Mk1's).
I work in a used car dealership I driven lots and lots of the Aygo's they all have the high biting point I found to, they decent cars for the price. They share the same with C1,108 as well.
Mine makes a whine noise in 1st gear similar to the sound when you reverse a car, it's only when I accelerate and clutch is fully out. Have you had this jasper ?
I not heard one do that tbh no, I driven I lost count how many. Hopefully its nothing serious but every car has its unique thing it does. @@user-fo6mo8ch9v
The clutch is like this for the C1 and the 107 as well as many other town cars whether the clutch is cable or hydraulically operated. The clutches are installed quite high as it is from factory, but as the clutch wears this raises, and when the clutch assembly gets replaced you are then at the mercy of whoever adjusts the throwout of the clutch via the cable or hydraulic adjustment. You can mitigate this by adjusting the pedal however this is not generally advisable if your clutch isn't new as this can cause premature wear to the clutch, if you make the bite too low then there will still be clutch friction when changing gears etc.
Thanks for sharing this. It isn't the first time I've heard it. I've thought long and hard about changing the bite point, but as I've got used to it, I'm not too sure if it's something I should do. There is also what you have shared to worry about, too.
@@jamieaygo if you're used to how it feels and there is no signs of premature wear such as burning clutch smell or bad gear changes, then I would say there's no reason to change it. If you do decide you want the pedal lower then just make sure you don't make any big pedal adjustments so that the pedal's travel coincides with the clutches throwout (can separate and clamp nicely)
@jamieaygo Got a good deal on it too . Part x my old aygo . Fully serviced even gear box oil ! Only problem I have is that Android auto doesn't connect. But apart from that is a gem 💎 ✨️
Good shout and thank you for your kind words. Yes, I am looking to get some wind deflectors as I am on with sound proofing the Aygo, so I suspect they may help with wind noise, too.
I have a mk1 2007 3 door that I bought with 60k miles on it in 2013, it now has 130k miles and has never had any issues, I get it serviced every year routinely but otherwise just get in and drive, will keep it a few more years but maybe get a mk2 eventually. Great review!! 🙏
Thank you for your kinds words! You know, I need to get my hands on a MK1. I'd love to experience the drive and ownership, etc. Love the look of them and I know some people have commented previously that they like the size of the MK1 better than the MK2.
@@jamieaygo I imagine the mk1s will become sought after in the next 10 years as us millennials get old and nostalgic!! 😂. Mine reminds me a lot of my mums 91 mini (old shape) I learnt to drive in and my 92 fiat panda first car, except build quality x1000 both.
Best car in the world, so cheap it's almost free. Great fun to drive but you need to use those revs, the engine will thank you for it. On a side note do not buy the auto as it's a robotised manual and horrendous (the wife had one) get the Kia Picanto if going for an auto. After 8 years and 50k miles nothing has gone wrong so no complaints from me.
That's awesome that you've had it that long, done that many miles and you've had to folk over nothing to repair it. Thanks for the heads up on the auto. Do you know if they changed it at all for the Aygo X or are they using the same system?
The Aygo X uses the same auto box as the Yaris, I again know this because the wife has one, a 72 plate which we got from new and is an excellent car in which we have managed 80mpg on nearly every long run. I still love my Aygo which like you I use as a commuter. Strangely I think the real reason I love is is that I don't have to look after it just an annual service and a wash twice a year (I'm serious). Also I want to make clear I could afford almost any car I want, I just don't want them because I would have to look after them and spend a lot of money on them.@@jamieaygo
Thank you for the kind words! You are spot on about picking one up with Toyota service history although you don't have to worry too much about concurrent history as the one I picked up went private for a few services. I took it to Toyota when I first got it for a service and that extended the warranty. It's a 65 plate, so has a few years to go before it turns 10 years old. As long as it's under 10 years old, you're golden.
Very well done! Great production value on this video and very informative as someone who lives in the US and knows very little about A segment cars like the Aygo!
I have the Citroen older version, bought it 8 years ago for £5.5K . Now use it for business, it’s worth about £2.8 K now. 10k business miles per year at 45p per mile = £4.5k per year. Fuel £1.3 K per year. Servicing (myself) cost £30-60. Total bills in 8 years - new set of front discs/pads £40. Two rear exhaust boxes £45 each, new battery £40 and tyres £40-£60 per corner.
Awesome. Yeah, it's a great car to start with. I did do a video on the channel about buying one as your first car, so do give that a watch as it may be helpful.
@@jamieaygo Thanks for the advice. MK2 is quite expensive in Sweden from the looks of it, at around 62000 miles they can go for nearly 5000 British pounds whereas MK1 is less than half that which sounds more reasonable for a (hopefully) decent first car.
I have a corvette and mercedes c class but I never get tired of driving my 2 door 3rd gen yaris with manual transmission. So fun to drive and gets 40mpg+
This video is completely accurate. Had my 64 plate 40k miles Aygo 7 months. So cheap to run that works mileage completely covers all the costs including the finance! 😊
Great video! You can actually retrofit AA/Carplay by getting a head unit from a 2019+ C1/108/Aygo from a wreckers, the 3 button stereo, and you should find one for about 100-300€
Thank you! Yes, I've thought about doing this but they are quite expensive on eBay. At least last time I checked. Did you have to get yours coded to the car?
Hi, Ron! The one I have is this one - tinyurl.com/3w8v3nex - It fits alright but the fitting nuts do tend to run loose over time, so you do have to tighten them periodically. I am considering picking one up from Armster, though. Bit more expensive but designed for the car - tinyurl.com/4sm3nsmm
I drove 100k miles in 1.0 Yaris III- It's suprisingly good and ergonomic and reliable multipurpose workhorse- It's 5 years old- used as workhorse and it had NO MALFUNCTIONS (any but exploatation) with LPG installation. One con is no armrest on middle...
The park plug change timing is at 60,000 miles, they are long life plugs. I also changed the interior light bulb for an LED and put a timer on it so it stays on for a while when I shut the door, allowing me to put on seat belt, key in ignition etc. My original bulb was not a halogen bulb though, just a normal incandescent bulb. I had fitted that with a delay unit which dimmed the bulb to off after a time I set, but I needed a different unit for the LED bulb as that cannot be dimmed, so the light just cuts off abruptly. Chrome - personal taste, i added the chrome strip across the tailgate, the chrome foglamp surrounds and the chrome flashes each side of the grille at the front. Over the 3 1/2 years I have owned mine I have averaged 57 mpg - the trip computer is optimistic and normally reads at least couple of mpg more than i actually get based on fuel put in. Agree re the very high clutch, but my last Mk1 Aygo had a high clutch too so I am used to it
That's really interesting, you know. I can totally see why you've done it. a dimmer switch would be ideal to put your seat belt on, get sorted, etc. I bet it's a real game-changer at night. I am toying with the idea of interior lighting for the same purpose. Chrome is a nice touch. I've not thought about the outside much apart from the crazy idea of installing the extra spotlights under the main ones, ha! I do want to put alloys on it at some point, too! Do you think you'll upgrade to the Aygo X in future?
@@jamieaygoYes, the interior light delay unit makes a massive difference. Mine is adjustable for the delay time, but i set it to how long I want it and it hides by the interior light in the head lining. I have an Aygo Expression so it came with alloys. I will not be getting the new Aygo x, it seems to be lot bigger (9" longer and 5" wider) (based on the yaris floorpan I think), though I gather it has a much tighter turning circle. That wide it would not go in my garage anyway. I had a 2013 Mk 1 Aygo and could drive in, with my Mk 2 I have to fold the driver's door mirror in. I can understand why you want extra spotlights, the standard "projector" lights are dreadful compared to my Mk 1
yeah, I think your concerns about Aygo X mirror mine. You are spot on that it is based on the Yaris chassis (only way to get economies of scale, apparently) and the size increase isn't really something I, or I imagine many other Aygo fans are interested in. Arguably, it is quite a stretch to call it an Aygo in the truest sense but I can see why they are following markets trends towards bigger cars, which I think is unfortunate. It's only really Kia that are sticking to their true small car moniker.
I had 3 Aygos loved them !!! I now have the CHR which is just beautiful to drive, but sometimes I miss the practicality of the Aygo !! Parking it on a postage stamp, something I can't do with the CHR
@jamieaygo Yes !!! The car is stunning !! It's the Excel so it has everything on board but as I said the Aygo was a great little car and I do miss not being able to park on a postage stamp
My wife's got a 67 plate c1. Only real issue we've had is the rear top brake light leaking. Super common fault. Beyond that its been excellent. Got the c1 as it has the 1.2 puretech with 82bhp and feels way more perky to drive. Still does over 50mpg easily. On my longer commute can get 60mpg and the best ive had to Cornwall from the midlands was 68mpg! Amazing little cars.
The Puretech engine is fine until bits of the wet cambelt start clogging up the oil pick up in the sump. Regular oil changes with the correct oil and more frequent cambelt changes will help. 👍
I have one of these and when I pull off in 1st gear it makes a sort of whining/humming sound, it's very quiet but it sounds a bit like the noise a car makes in reverse, is this normal ?
Yes, it can do. The engine is known for it's unique sounds. I'll often here like a "coil wind" sound (like a spaceship taking off, ha) when going lower speeds in car parks and stuff. Engines are pretty bullet proof and are known for their reliability.
So Jamie i have looked on eBay plus all over for the armrests but they are retro fit ..ali express have a direct fit for the Aygo ... but can't get a delivery to my address in the uk for some reason .....mine is the same spec but not tax free which i cant get my pea brain around lol ...try acquiring some Aygo alloys with low profiles for the road noise mines great ......great vids by the way 👍😎
The one I have for my Aygo isn't technically made for it, but fits fine. I think it's best just trying a few and seeing which one you like best. Mine looks great, but I do think it might have been better if I shot for one that was a bit bigger in terms of storage. It does the job, though. It's also worth mentioning that it's really just for storage and doesn't really work as an armrest because it's too short. I don't mind that as i tend to drive in a relaxed manner anyway and don't really need the armrest to lean on that much. Good shout on the alloys! I am wanting to get some of the new style black "wind turbine" looking ones, but they go for about 150 GBP each with Continental tyres, which isn't bad at all. Just need to save the coin, ha! You are too kind! Thank you!
Thank you for you kind words. I get this question a lot. I picked it up on eBay and like all things on eBay, they tend to disappear after a while. If you search for "Arm rest Armrest Console for RENAULT CLIO MK1 MK2 MK3 MK4" on eBay, it brings up the one that looks identical to the one I own. It's the first option. I'm a 100% certain this is the same as mine. It won't act as an armrest as such because it's too low down (you could make it higher) but it's great for storage. Install is super easy. The base plate just screws into the plastic. You can literally just screw holes into the plastic with the screws because it's so soft. Hope that helps!
My wife has an Aygo bought new in 2018, nice well made motor but as you say the clutch bite is, in my opinion, far to high. I've been driving for a long time and the first time I drove it I stalled at some lights. Added to that the throttle is to light.
@@jamieaygo just thought if something else. IMHO the hearing is to tall, it doesent seem happy at 30mph in fourth which I find irritating. We leave the climate control on all the time on both of our cars, done it for years but the cooling fan on the Aygo is constantly cutting in or out.
Yeah, it's quite loud is that fan isn't it. I've been parked up with the AC on and some people have walked past and I can clearly lip-read them saying "That's really loud!"
very good all round explainetion i got the citroen c1 2012 but the glutch thing still bothers me and gives me stress when at traffic lights i love the car futher on but am looking for a new one if thats peugot toyota nor citreon to have the hill help thingy because you need to rev up high which i feel draw alot off attention toward ya :P
Yeah, I do often think about that for MK1 owners as the hill assist on the newer models is a real help! My understanding is that all MK2 models (Peugeot, Citreon and Toyota) all have hill start assist, but do check if you end up picking on up.
At the moment I have to drive with a recent model Yaris and I already find it very cramped. Certainly as I am used to a spacious Auris (where the interior was designed first, then the body). You can imagine the problems I would have with the even smaller Aygo. Though if I would buy one I would choose a hybrid, which is an automatic.
I was looking at a Yaris potentially for the future and love that all the versions from 2021 and beyond are hybrids. Looks like the auto box is solid on them too, which is really attractive.
You mention the car having a cruise control. Is this an original cruise control? I got an Aygo myself and it has the same handle but that was for the speed limiter. I had to built in an after market cruise control which does use the same handle but comes with a small led light as an indicator. I read before that his model doesn´t have cruise control originally, but it might be a difference with the markets as I´m from the Netherlands.
I think I should correctly refer to it as a "speed limiter" rather than "cruise control" as it doesn't hold speed when you take your foot off of the accelerator, so, no, it doesn't come with cruise control. Thanks for asking this clarifying question as I've clearly conflated the two incorrectly, ha!
I've test driven the auto Aygo Mk2. It's shocking. It's a robotised manually box and is truly awful, even main dealer said they're bad. I've got an IQ with CVT auto box which is way better. The new Aygo X now also has a CVT auto box which makes it much more appealing.
Yes, it seems to be the consensus here in the comments that the auto is a bad box. Another commenter has mentioned the Aygo X uses a CVT, so I am guessing Toyota must have known they messed up, ha!
Aygo is great but yes the clutch biting point is weird, but having driven a few other Toyotas after like an old avensis it also felt the same way? maybe its a toyota thing. However i think the VW Up is just a much nicer car for about the same price. You get more power (the TSI is great but non turbo 75hp is fine too) and in my opinion a much nicer interior quality feel. It also drives a lot better, the clutch is also much more satisfying. However the tech is better in the Aygo, even the modern up's dont even have a screen and backup camera i think.
Yeah, you have to pick your poison really, don't you. I was actually looking at an UP! and almost bought one. I was specifically looking at the High UP! that has heated seats. I'm unsure if it had a reverse camera, but maybe it had parking sensors. The one I looked at had suspected mileage fraud on it, so I stayed away and then the Aygo just happened to come along. They are better-built cars, though. No doubt about that.
I've test drove a few when I was trying to figure out what city car to get and the clutch and gearbox linkage were the deciding factors for me, on the mk1 they're absolutely shocking and I've heard the mk2 is only a little better. It's a shame too because I really like the car, but I can't drive something with such a disconnected feeling. Even the cheapest simracing equipment from logitech felt more tactile. In fact the first one I test drove I thought the gearbox and clutch were both broken, but I tried a much nicer condition C1 shortly after and it felt just the same.
You have to go with what you like. The feel of the car isn't for everyone. Coming from an Audi A3, I quite liked the lightness or "disconnected" feeling. I know some people have mentioned that the gear shifts feel like you're pushing a spoon through porridge (which I thought was funny), but it hasn't been my experience with the Aygo MK2
Having driven the mk 1 Aygo auto, the auto box was one of the reasons I sold it. Aygo however, even mk2 is not a full automatic, its a computerised system with clutch, so changing gears is very slow.
😂 Nothing gets past you, Mike. Proper bought into the marketing hype, haven't I! At any rate, it saves me points on my license. I've got some wriggle room, but I don't want to tighten it!
You will experience additional power once the battery is replaced. The battery is crucial to the car, and I was surprised by the car's performance after replacing the Bosch one. Periodically replace the oil, oil filter, and air filter, and then the car will be good to go.
The battery has zero effect on the performance of the car - it just starts it and runs the lights, wipers etc with help of the alternator recharging it as you drive.
It can get blown about a bit on motorways but it definitely holds it's own out there and is happy to cruise on the motorway, even if it doesn't always sound like it.
The aygo and vw up ( skoda and seat ) kia picanto are some of the best city cars out there The aygo X is the next generation after this model but this this model reminds me of rabbit face with the badge being the button nose.
Many people complain these 1 liter engines are underpowered. But remember these cars are very light as well, so they actually have respectable acceleration up to 70mph. The key with these small engines that uses VVT is to keep the revs up. If you take away the factory slim wheels and put on fat wheels with fat tyres you can corner these small cars at ridiculous speed.
My Volvo XC90 was in for a repair in the paint shop as someone ironical dinged it in the supermarket car park a hit and run job the courtesy car the insurance company gave me was an Aygo when it arrived I nearly fell over I am over six feet with a bad back and I panicked I was ready to reject the car for that reason but it worked for me enough head and leg room with the front seat slid back to max , for the near two weeks I drove it I loved it such a fun little car that rips through the gears quite refreshing after driving an auto for nearly 20 years, incredibly economical and surprisingly sporty at the same time, it made me feel quite young it reminded me of an Alfa Sud I drove many years ago it had the same throaty growl to the engine and the same go cart like handling. I would definitely buy one as a second car for days when I just want to relax and not have to squeeze the Volvo land barge into parking spaces. Only downside was the incredibly tiny boot and the fact that larger cars sit up your chuff trying to intimidate you. I did not miss the Volvo much apart from the boot size which is vast, interior quality in the little Aygo was laughable but it was a loan car so was not too bothered.
It's nice when your expectations are blown away, isn't it. When I took my Aygo for a test drive, I was coming from on old 55 plate Audi A3 that had a smooth drive regardless of the age. I was worried that the Aygo would just feel plain by comparison, but as soon as I started driving it, I was like "this is legit. I'm buying it", ha! Other drivers in the larger cars bullying you on the road is a real thing. I don't think enough people know this. I've said this before, but the amount of people that have pulled out on me thinking I'm some placid driver who will defer to them by default of size can be frustrating.
I actually picked it up on eBay and with all things on eBay, they tend to disappear after a while. I did a video on Aygo accessories, which I'd encourage you to go and watch as I should have an alternative linked there. If not, pop onto eBay and type in "Aygo Mk2 armrest" and something similar should pop up.
Japanese cars just have a high biting point. I also purchased a head unit that was taken out of a Citroen C1 2018, swapped it in for a 2016 C1 which added car play/android auto
Wow , I thought I went mad when my Jaguar XJ ECU gave up and then bought an Aygo. I have never looked back as I halved my insurance Per Annum. My Jag cost £340 a year for Tax while my new Aygo is Zero money per year. £110 about what it used to cost me to fill an empty Jag petrol tank to full to get about 300 miles urban driving. Now with the Aygo I will pay about £55 for an empty tank to full and get 500 miles driving. Where can I go wrong anyone?
What did Toyota actually change for the £230? I did spark plugs, oil, air filter, oil filter, cabin filter and top spec oil for a grand total of £100! Id be surprised if they did anything other than look at it and change the oil and oil filter for that price 😮
@@jamieaygo because the engine is at the rear twingo have smallest turning radius, perfect weight distribution so is the fastest on roundabout and curves also the quietest in the class. Nice looking interior without any body metal elements, Reanult easylink with andoird auto. 65, 75hp and 90hp engines to choose.
I have to say, I don't understand who the Aygo X is for. Maybe if I tried it I'd understand but when I took my Aygo to the Toyota main dealer for a service, I had a little look around the Aygo X and it doesn't seem much bigger inside, it just looks bigger. At least that was my first impression of it. Also, with it being bigger, you lose the advantage of being able to park it anywhere, which I rather like. I understand Toyota is following market trends, but companies like Kia/Hyundai are still making small cars and they seem to be pretty good at it. Be interesting to see the sales figures for the Aygo X, that's for sure.
@@jamieaygo I've driven the Aygo X and its only advantage is its actually easier to park and manourve, those tall narrow tyres/wheels enable the wheels to turn sharper and it does, very tight lock on it. However the cost for a set of tyres on them is eye watering and they make the brakes look tiny especially at the back. It also compromises on efficency and its ability to accelerate as the Aygo X is noticeably slower. The handling is awful it has a high centre of gravity which they compensate for with a very stiff suspension it still feels like it wants to roll in the corners even if you just take them 3 mph too quick. The comfort and ride quaility is poor due to the stiff suspension. There is more boot space and I assume more leg room. Overall its a big step down especially given how much money they want for one.
Yes, the price is something of a jump up, isn't it. I always figured the wheels they put on it would make for a stiffer ride. They look nice, but always the case when you go larger on wheels. especially if you don't adjust with suspension, which seems to be the case here. Shame, really.
@@jamieaygo The tyres on the 17 inch wheels are £100 or more each and £144 or more for the 18 inch wheels. Its not a cheap car to run and maintain like it was before. I paid £320 for 4 Pirelli Cinturato P7C2s on my Toyota Auris with 16 inch wheels I could have got budgets all round for under £200.
Edit: I made this a lot longer than I meant too. Apologies. I drive a 2018 Honda Fit here in the US. I think this car is even smaller than that? I think my Fit is so tiny already and really want to move up size one day. Im scared to death of hitting absolutely anything as I would most certainly die immediately. Its easy to drive, gets absolutely amazing fuel economy, and small means easy to fit everywhere. But these cheap cars are built CHEAP. The build quality of these cars isnt that good compared to larger cars here. Another reason Americans are fond of them. Regardless of the brand these cars are just bad at build quality in the reviews Ive seen. And they are not taken seriously here as their looks are kind fugly. The Fit, Yaris, etc and this Aygo are not deisgned for us at all and look way too...something. They dont appeal to Americans like old small cars did in the 80s and 90s. They just forgot how to style them right for mass market appeal. It along with all other modern small cars gets made fun because people find the looks just ugly. Also I have realized most of us Americans grow up in our parents cars and our first used cars are normally Corollas, Accords, Camrys, Civics, or a small suv or a truck. Those cars despite being old and such just offer a lot being what they are. So if someone steps into these cars even brand new they will be shocked at how bare bones jt is to their car which is 15 years old at that point. Its amazing to me how my Fit as three cameras, magic seats, and a crazy infotainment center but lacks lumbar support for my back and cup holders for the rear. Among other things. And definitely one draw back is how expensive small cars are to insure because of how dangerous they are. I wont get a car this small again simply for that alone. It all comes back to the absolute lack of safety. I would die hitting a pole. Let alone a Camry or F-150. I am paying 200 dollars a month for it currently. Maybe its my insurer and I could get a better deal? Looking to fix it for next year. Its crazy to me the different mindset yall have over there. I guess when they are everywhere and in more denser areas they dont look out of place. Everywhere my tiny bright orange Fit goes its sticks out like a sore thumb next to all the other cars lol. They smallest offerings we have left I think are the Versa, Mirage, and Rio. None of which are particularly grand cars from what Ive seen. Automakers just never tried hard here. Kei cars over in Japan should be the standard in how to package a small car. So many features that those same brands refuse to offer on other cars.
Thanks for sharing this. It's a great way to highlight certainly the cultural differences when it comes to cars. Our roads are very narrow and larger cars just have a harder time on them, although it hasn't stopped them being popular. Range Rovers are everywhere. In the UK at least, smaller, less powerful cars are cheaper to insure if anything and the Aygo that I have at least scored reasonably on the Euro NCAP safety test, but they aren't going to measure up to larger cars. That test also becomes somewhat redundant over time. Interestingly, someone commented on my "Is the Aygo safe" video and made a good point that with electric cars becoming more and more popular on the roads, people who drive ICE cars will likely take more of the brunt in a crash between the two, just because the electric car will likely be heavier. The Japanese have some wonderfully small cars that I envy. This Nissan Cube been one of them!
I got given one of these as a courtesy car while my MX5 was being repaired. My notes on this are: same as you - wierdly high biting point. zero clutch pedal feel. a bit hard to get used to moving from the MX5, which has a wierdly low bite point. wipers - on max speed can just about keep up with normal dual wipers on their medium speed. inadequate in heavy rain. controls - shifter feels like moving a spoon through a bowl of porridge, zero feel from steering. suspension - feels very wallowy (might be due to the car I'm coming from being overly great in this regard). hard plastic door cards - my elbow actually started to hurt on a long drive (yes I'm a pussy). engine - completely gutless. revving it out doesn't do anything, you still move off at the same speed. I actually felt unmotivated to try to drive it fast because it gave you so little back for your effort. seats - zero bolstering and I was falling out of them. These were actually the limit of the cars handling more so than the suspension, which still had more to give. Finally, and one I didn't expect, is that people kept cutting me off all the time lol. I learned to drive a few years ago in a Suzuki Alto and while this was similarly cheap in build and price, it had great controls and a really peppy engine that rewarded you for revving it out and I was quite disappointed that this wasn't similar to be honest. I average 47 to the gallon beating the absolute piss out of it for the 2 weeks I had it, which was seriously impressive honestly.
Honestly, in the best possible way I can convey through text, this was a brilliant read! genuine belly laughs. "Shifter feels like moving a spoon through porridge" 😂 Interesting observation of the Suzuki Alto. I was looking at one the other day and couldn't help but see the similarities in looks between it and the Aygo, at least from the side view I had of it. I think your last point about been cut-off is a genuine one that people don't realise. Other drivers WILL bully you in this car expecting you are gutless, which I've occasionally surprised some by not being on the odd occasion. The amount of cars that also try to pull out on me compared to when I drove the Audi seems likes it's doubled, too.
It's styling shouldn't deserve how agreesive it is, despite it making 79-81 hp depending on model year. Really didn't like how try hard Toyota and Honda were in the late 2010's with their design. This is an example of such. Besides design, seems like a good car tho
Google translate helped! This is what I got: "I'm also happy with mine, it's red from 2015, driven 140,000 km, sorry I'm writing in Danish.." Glad you're still loving your Aygo! Sounds like it's serving you well!
Ja den gør det den skal og mere til syntes den er lidt sjov at køre i også jeg skal have folie på mit tag i næste uge det tager også meget af støjen..@@jamieaygo
Such a small car has its advantages but I drove the same from Citroen, the C1. Horribly loud , tiny 3 cyl. engine, just horrifying from a comfort pov. since I usually drive Audi A4s , BMW 3 series , Citroen C5, previous, Avensis , CR-V, Astra...
My wife has a 2020 Aygo MK2 Auto and its a nasty thing. Its the X Trend model. If you want a laugh go and test drive the auto and see what you think. The worst gearbox ever made in history. The only cool thing about it is it has flappy paddles haha.
Brilliant, ha. This seems to be the consensus amongst those that have commented about the auto box on the Aygo. Sounds like I may have dodged a bullet.
The manual gear change and clutch feel on the manual Aygo & Co. might feel a bit shit, but it's nowhere near as shit as the automatic. The automatic available on these cars is not a true automatic with a torque converter, or even just a CVT. It's one of those horrid automated manuals, which take absolute ages to change between gears and are jerky as hell at low speeds. You dodged a bullet by getting the manual.
The issue with the clutch? You are supposed to set it every year. There’s a cable behind and the battery carrier. Now. No-one does that every year, so people burn their clutches waaay too often
I couldn't agree more. It seems like a great candidate for electrification. if they don't do it, at some point....I will! *runs off to scrounge together enough coins
Totally. Toyota have been one of, if not THE most trepidatious when it comes to electric vehicles. Also, given that the Aygo X became essentially a bigger Aygo, they will likely follow the market more than anything. At the moment, the "market" doesn't seem interested in smaller cars, which is a shame.
Good old RUclips algorithm reaches far and wide, ha! Perhaps you might be able to get your hands on an import. Thank you for your kind words.
The all mighty algorythmo!
Cable, still adjustable
Nice! I think once my Aygo drops out of warranty, I'll start doing the work myself.
I have a mk1 2010 facelift aygo with over 97.000 miles... it still drives like a dream
Nice! Certainly got a lot of great cars to compare the Aygo to. Are you still driving the Aygo or did you get something else?
@@jamieaygo yeap! im keeping my aygo till it can't roll anymore hahahah
You will definitely have a blast when you lose both your legs in an accident going 30km/h or harder
Solid write-up and plan is a good one going forward!
Thank you! Yes, someone kindly shared a video in the comments, so I'm going to give it a go at the weekend.
Well done this is a Brilliant and 100% true review, i am on my 4th Aygo and no intentions whatsoever to change my Model...
Thank you for your kind words!
i have MK2 16 PLATE i am one owner done over 100.000 miles still going strong no problems with it i been Scotland and North Wales in it
Awesome!
Great video fella. 7:27 that bit of information is the vital part for me. I have lower back issues and sciatica if I'm sat for a short while. I'd need regular breaks no matter the car, but if they're on the uncomfortable side, that's a no go...
Cheers.
Thank you for your kind words! Appreciate it.
I regularly do journeys of 2 hours in mine and have no problems at all, I find it very comfortable and with a height adjustable seat too I can get a really good driving position.
I love the aygo.I have the Xplay too but 2021 model.Only problem is that when you go on the motorway, the rev limiter will go crazy high (3000-3500)
A lot of parallels with my first car. I had an Audi A3 and had real trouble adjusting to the Aygo, but we get along fine now, ha!
My 108 2014 got writen off while it was innocently parked. Loved it so just got a x trend aygo 2022. One of the last before the aygo x came out
Nice upgrade! What do you think of it compared to the 2014 variant?
Yes, seems to be a hallmark of the car. I am going to have a go at altering the bite point and will be sure to uploaded a video as soon as it's done.
I have just got a orange one you had in the video. Great little car !
Nice review 👌
Nice 👍 Love the orange one. The Aygo Mk2 comes in some wicked colours!
@jamieaygo Got a good deal on it too . Part x my old aygo .
Fully serviced even gear box oil !
Only problem I have is that Android auto doesn't connect.
But apart from that is a gem 💎 ✨️
Hope you get that sorted! Be nice to hear what the solution is if you do get it sorted. Is it throwing up any particular errors?
@jamieaygo no error at all . Looks like I need a dongle to make it work seen them on ebay for £30
Great video thanks for sharing I own the Xpress 2018 MK2 I suggest you get some wind deflectors they will be very useful in your case.
Good shout and thank you for your kind words. Yes, I am looking to get some wind deflectors as I am on with sound proofing the Aygo, so I suspect they may help with wind noise, too.
I found Heko team installed on all my vehicles very good from Poland @@jamieaygo
Cool. Will have a look. Thanks!
Yeah, that's a good observation. We need to get collecting ASAP 🤣
Your absolutely right Jamie parking is difficult especially if you live in London think of getting one just had enough of big and expensive cars!!
Yeah, these big SUV's are only getting bigger!
Thanks for the great video.
Other bonus if you can get hold of one with Toyota service history they extend the warranty to 10 years or 100k miles.
Thank you! Very kind!
i ready to buy aygo, thankyou ur video to let me know what will happen on my future。
Glad you found it helpful!
Nice! They are properly economical these cars, aren't they.
Great video! I'm currently looking around for my very first car and the Aygo has interested me the most.
Awesome. Yeah, it's a great car to start with. I did do a video on the channel about buying one as your first car, so do give that a watch as it may be helpful.
You could consider a MK1 Aygo, too. Essentially the same car underneath, but lacking some of the more modern features of the MK2
@@jamieaygo Thanks for the advice. MK2 is quite expensive in Sweden from the looks of it, at around 62000 miles they can go for nearly 5000 British pounds whereas MK1 is less than half that which sounds more reasonable for a (hopefully) decent first car.
Yeah, great little starter car!
I have a corvette and mercedes c class but I never get tired of driving my 2 door 3rd gen yaris with manual transmission. So fun to drive and gets 40mpg+
Awesome!
I couldn't agree with you more. I love simple honest little cars, which you can actually repair yourself.
Exactly!
This video is completely accurate. Had my 64 plate 40k miles Aygo 7 months. So cheap to run that works mileage completely covers all the costs including the finance! 😊
Awesome! That's a right deal you've got there!
Did you have to get yours coded to the car?
good video, the mk7 fiesta is also a great reliable car. Very fun to drive.
Thank you!
Jamie Hi im just about to get my first Aygo Auto :) but im interested in the Arm rest where did you get that one from please
Nice! Did you do the LPG conversion yourself?
I absolutely love my little auto mk2 it’s a great little run about!
Likewise!
Brilliant, ha! Do you recommend the upgrade to the CHR, Jayne?
Nice! Am I right in thinking that most of them got the 1.2 pure tech apart from the Aygo?
@@jamieaygo yeah they have the option. The 1.0 is still by far the most popular engine.
The Puretech engine is fine until bits of the wet cambelt start clogging up the oil pick up in the sump. Regular oil changes with the correct oil and more frequent cambelt changes will help. 👍
@@jamieclayton9 yeah much the same as the ecoboost engines
I have one of these and when I pull off in 1st gear it makes a sort of whining/humming sound, it's very quiet but it sounds a bit like the noise a car makes in reverse, is this normal ?
Yes, it can do. The engine is known for it's unique sounds. I'll often here like a "coil wind" sound (like a spaceship taking off, ha) when going lower speeds in car parks and stuff. Engines are pretty bullet proof and are known for their reliability.
Seems a good town car pal, just bought a 107 she'd only done 30,000miles so had to buy her.
i spray painted my grey interior trim to a glossy black and red vents, makes the car feel more expensive
I thought of wrapping mine in leather, you know! Will be sure to do a video if I do.
Thank you!
Great video, I love my aygo so far, can you put the link of your armrest below? Thx
Thank you for your kindness, Felicity. Here's the link to the armrest I have. I picked it up on eBay - tinyurl.com/4wdrbdp8
Lovely review for a tiny car. Got a 2020 x-cite myself. Where did you get that centre arm rest from!? I've been looking for one for a while.
@@jamieaygo This is perfect, cheers mate!
I changed the clutch in my 107 and the biting point was fixed. They're known for being weak in these.
Cheers, Mike. Will keep an eye out!
My wife has an Aygo bought new in 2018, nice well made motor but as you say the clutch bite is, in my opinion, far to high. I've been driving for a long time and the first time I drove it I stalled at some lights. Added to that the throttle is to light.
Good observations, Northstar. I still stall it to this day, but it is more on the rarer side, shall we say 🤣
@@jamieaygo From experience, the Yaris is suited for city traffic but lacks power for highways/motorways.
Great presentation of the Aygo...
Thank you! Very kind!
How did you go about actually adding cruise control? Is it quite complicated?
I've test driven the auto Aygo Mk2. It's shocking. It's a robotised manually box and is truly awful, even main dealer said they're bad. I've got an IQ with CVT auto box which is way better. The new Aygo X now also has a CVT auto box which makes it much more appealing.
U can get it in manual?
Thanks for sharing this. Seems most people in the comments agree that the auto box on the Aygo isn't good.
Jamie , Its not a cruise control though is it. Its just a speed limiter
😂 Nothing gets past you, Mike. Proper bought into the marketing hype, haven't I! At any rate, it saves me points on my license. I've got some wriggle room, but I don't want to tighten it!
Ahah, i was casually enjoying this high quality video before noticing this channel has only 637 subscribers, no way. Le'ts make it 638, go aygo!
Awesome! Thank you!
You may replace the battery with a Bosch one, you would notice a different performance in this car. I also have a MK2 Aygo, it is a nice / fun car.
Nice recommendation. What kind of difference would it make to the performance? Just smoother running?
You will experience additional power once the battery is replaced. The battery is crucial to the car, and I was surprised by the car's performance after replacing the Bosch one. Periodically replace the oil, oil filter, and air filter, and then the car will be good to go.
The battery has zero effect on the performance of the car - it just starts it and runs the lights, wipers etc with help of the alternator recharging it as you drive.
I just thought the battery would affect the voltage to spark plug but I didn't really measure the voltage.@@bordersw1239
How is it on the motorway especially. I really want a 2021 aygo
It can get blown about a bit on motorways but it definitely holds it's own out there and is happy to cruise on the motorway, even if it doesn't always sound like it.
The aygo and vw up ( skoda and seat ) kia picanto are some of the best city cars out there
The aygo X is the next generation after this model but this this model reminds me of rabbit face with the badge being the button nose.
I can see the rabbit now, ha!
Yeah, in the lower gears you do get quite a bit out of them!
I wonder how does it compare to mitsubishi mirage from the same year
My Volvo XC90 was in for a repair in the paint shop as someone ironical dinged it in the supermarket car park a hit and run job the courtesy car the insurance company gave me was an Aygo when it arrived I nearly fell over I am over six feet with a bad back and I panicked I was ready to reject the car for that reason but it worked for me enough head and leg room with the front seat slid back to max , for the near two weeks I drove it I loved it such a fun little car that rips through the gears quite refreshing after driving an auto for nearly 20 years, incredibly economical and surprisingly sporty at the same time, it made me feel quite young it reminded me of an Alfa Sud I drove many years ago it had the same throaty growl to the engine and the same go cart like handling.
Hi so where did your arm rest come from ......thanks
I actually picked it up on eBay and with all things on eBay, they tend to disappear after a while. I did a video on Aygo accessories, which I'd encourage you to go and watch as I should have an alternative linked there. If not, pop onto eBay and type in "Aygo Mk2 armrest" and something similar should pop up.
i loveeeee my aygo
Fantastic review
Thank you! Cheers!
Japanese cars just have a high biting point. I also purchased a head unit that was taken out of a Citroen C1 2018, swapped it in for a 2016 C1 which added car play/android auto
Nice. I thought of doing this, too. I'm assuming you had the get the new head unit coded to the car?
Wow ,
I thought I went mad when my Jaguar XJ ECU gave up and then bought an Aygo.
Love stories like this and it very much mirrors my own. Bravo!
What did Toyota actually change for the £230? I did spark plugs, oil, air filter, oil filter, cabin filter and top spec oil for a grand total of £100! Id be surprised if they did anything other than look at it and change the oil and oil filter for that price 😮
yeah, that's likely what they did. I knew it would be expensive, but wanted to do it all the same. I'll do the service myself next time around.
twingo 3 lifting its the best in this class for sure.
Nice. I've had a look at the Twingo 3 and it looks nice. What is it you like about it?
@@jamieaygo because the engine is at the rear twingo have smallest turning radius, perfect weight distribution so is the fastest on roundabout and curves also the quietest in the class. Nice looking interior without any body metal elements, Reanult easylink with andoird auto. 65, 75hp and 90hp engines to choose.
Try driving the 2009 yaris petrol. I want to know whether its good or not from you
I might look at getting a Yaris in the future, but I'll be sticking with the Aygo for the time being.
@@jamieaygo its up to you whether you wanna do it now or later
This is the last Aygo before they ruined it with the Aygo X the biggest downside is the clutch as mentioned with its crazy high biting point.
@jamieaygo I loved the Scion xB. Not sure what it was called over there. But it's basically a Toyota. Boxy cars are so frickin cool.
I got given one of these as a courtesy car while my MX5 was being repaired. My notes on this are:
same as you - wierdly high biting point. zero clutch pedal feel. a bit hard to get used to moving from the MX5, which has a wierdly low bite point.
wipers - on max speed can just about keep up with normal dual wipers on their medium speed. inadequate in heavy rain.
controls - shifter feels like moving a spoon through a bowl of porridge, zero feel from steering.
suspension - feels very wallowy (might be due to the car I'm coming from being overly great in this regard).
hard plastic door cards - my elbow actually started to hurt on a long drive (yes I'm a pussy).
engine - completely gutless. revving it out doesn't do anything, you still move off at the same speed.
The amount of cars that also try to pull out on me compared to when I drove the Audi seems likes it's doubled, too.
have never seen this model of toyato before. it looks like a very angry yaris
Ahh yes love me toyatos.. and me hondays... maybe even me volksbaggins..
It's styling shouldn't deserve how agreesive it is, despite it making 79-81 hp depending on model year. Really didn't like how try hard Toyota and Honda were in the late 2010's with their design. This is an example of such. Besides design, seems like a good car tho
I hear you. Do you prefer the look of the newer Toyota and Honda cars?

Yeah, I had the same initial impression. Not for everyone.

Thanks for adding to this. it seems to be the consensus that the autos are hot turds, ha!
One of the worst cars I have ever driven. For the city only.
😂
The issue with the clutch? You are supposed to set it every year. There’s a cable behind and the battery carrier.
Now. No-one does that every year, so people burn their clutches waaay too often
Cheers!
Toyota was dumb for never electrifying this car
Compared to the VW eUP, and the abominable, cynical Aygo Cross
I couldn't agree more. It seems like a great candidate for electrification. if they don't do it, at some point....I will! *runs off to scrounge together enough coins
@@jamieaygo Transition One seems like the most likely bet, but they've gone quiet for a year now
Totally. Toyota have been one of, if not THE most trepidatious when it comes to electric vehicles. Also, given that the Aygo X became essentially a bigger Aygo, they will likely follow the market more than anything. At the moment, the "market" doesn't seem interested in smaller cars, which is a shame.
My lads just bought one of these, first car, and he’s 6ft 6. Fits in lovely.
Oh, wow! Good lad! A very prudent choice. Good on him!
