This is just an astounding song on every level...and not the least of which is this live-mix...clean as clean can be...everything perfect, especially the main vocal...Jesus, these guys are great!
It's 12 years later and I'm still here, even more-so present as I say goodbye to a 13 year relationship. My favourite punch brothers song... it's so beautiful.
OMG...I have one leg and Irritable Bowel Disorder "IBD". Whilst listening to Prairie Home Companion and taking a most glorious crap, I came across this song and the tune seemed to resonate from the bowl. The melody, combined with my natural intestinal harmony, and the pure lyrical accompaniment, reminded me of my parent's divorce. Then I realized that this song was written just for ME. Good luck, these are tough times, mates.
Woke up this morning to this being an earworm in my head. Couldn't remember the lyrics so I had to go through almost every fave on my Spotify list to find it. It's coincidentally named "This Is the Song" Lol!
I never made a mental note of liking it beyond a thumbs-up back then. But somehow the tune swam to the top of my brain.
It turns out these really are trying times. We'll get by.
Good lord will bring us through these tough times,Good boys.
Love from Pakistan.
These are tough times.. But we'll get by
especially hard when you're dead
Beautiful song! Made me cry!
They're really good. I'm sad that they aren't more popular, because they're REALLY talented.
Thank you.
So awesome.
Beautiful and appropriate for today.
This is one of the most beautiful things I have ever heard in my life.
I keep coming back to hear this.
You guys are the thing Amerika is missing.
Magnificent!
Love, love, love this song. So melodic and sweet.
It must have been freaking cold in that room. :^)
This is the song that swims in my head. This is the only song I hear. It's in everything I say and all I've written. And to anyone who dares wander too near... I say good luck, good luck. Good luck if you listen. It's a siren, good luck
Heard this yesterday on WUMB Radio (Boston, MA), on the way to work. Searched it on RUclips when I got home and gave it another listen. Listened to it again, and actually began to cry. Such a beautiful sound. Not sure where the tears came from, but I guess they needed to come out. These are tough times. Good luck. Peace.
I hear ya. I got misty listening to this as well.lol
You're not alone. Was at the gym, sitting at a piece of weight equipment. My wife had passed away the previous year and something in the lyric struck me and I sat there and cried. People must've thought I was nuts.
THis deserves at least a million views. So moving and magical.
Love, love, love!
Thanks, Prairie Home Companion!
Came upon this searching ballet...so glad I did! Love it. Perfect Folk.
This song is beautiful beyond the realm of tears
I heard this song in the background of a story American Idol was doing on Kristine Osorio and thought...."that sounds like Nickel Creek". Love this song and I am now a big fan of the Punch Brothers. Thank you for your music, mandolin, lyrics, voice and, as always, continued quality in all your work.
There's no need for luck when you've come prepared, but a well wish always settles well in the cockles of the heart. This is the song that conveys that feeling to me, a simple yet solid ballad to be sure!
I heart this song AND more importantly this band! brilliance in motion.
Awesome vocal harmonies, and Paul H.'s bowed bass at the end makes the vocals roar and rumble like something flying away and into space. : ) Zoom... (This is art.)
New favorite band right here. These guys are good.
heard this song in the background of an american idol episode and just had to look it up
great song!!!!!
Beautiful! this one brought a lump in to my throat when I heard it at Pickathon (Oregon). The violin is awesome!!!
Watched part of that via their live webcast. It looked awesome. I saw them in Toronto in Feb '12. Amazing show.
I'm in love with Chris Thile's voice, and all of them forever is amazing.
Okay, so what I'm gonna need you to for me right now is, bust out this studio quality classic on one radio station microphone. ya thanks.
God damn amazing!

Please please please come to Utah! I LOVE YOU GUYS!
I don't speak english (very well) but i love this song, it make me sad, but i like it.
The singer doesn't either!
Awesome song.
Otto ... Chris thile speaks English
if any song could move me to tears it would be this one
no, it was the bass playing. He used his bow for part of the song. He was playing high on his G string.
Listen, rinse, repeat
Wow. Each time I hear this song I love it even more. Glad these guys like other sad music like radiohead.
Never heard them before. Thanks Tiny Desk. Im impressed. A lot !
You boys nailed a good one! Thank you!

Wow, I love this song. Great job guys!!
@ 2:07 Chris Thile looks as if he is saying "Wow, my band is the absolute coolest band that ever existed!!!" I concur!!!

I love this song it calm me down =)
Awesome !
If that is not beautiful, I don't know what is.
enjoying the music he is playing
So I only discovered you today. You're awesome.
Amazing musicians!
shared with friends
@ThePrefontaine i heard that same show and was transported by that song!!!
These are tough times. Good luck. Peace.
Awesome
This is the song for 2016
You should try 2020 on for size.
Actually that's the bass that came in first--you can't see him, because the fiddler's standing in the way. You can tell because the bassist puts his hand way up high on his highest string to play a really kind of throaty high note just before the fiddler steps into view. Just had to come to the defense of PB's honor!
Love it!
@FU7IM7CANADIAN at first I was like 'what??' Then I burst out laughing. I needed that thank you!
Thile is amazing!
@iamaglassoftea
i'm no 'musician', but here's what i'm using to 'hum' along
verses: Dm7 | FMaj | Gmin (BbMaj7)
chorus: C | Gm7
Hope this works for you for now.
I just LOVE this tune.
MCM
Exquisite!
a beautiful and sensitively performed song - true talent (and they are hardly doing anything to showcase their considerable individual talents!)
is this heaven?
It's not that their good, it's how f#$%ing amazing can you get from 5 blokes standing around playing live in a small ass studio... this is talent defined
OMG I am so glad I get to see them this thur,,,,,,,,,,,,,YES YES YES! My brother turned me on to them. Makes me breathless and free,,,,,,,,ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh.
I didn't realise Charlie form It's always sunny was such a good violinist.
The are coming to Utah. In a few weeks :)
@Xandier101 being awesome.
If you like his vocals, look up Nickel Creek. They've broken up now, but he used to sing for them.
dude, how is this live, that sounds way to amazing to all be coming from 1 mic
@UglyGirlSingsGood god bless you ! I will pray 4 u , in hope that you make a full recovery ... god bless u and this band of seemingly merry men !
I feel only Chris and Noam got the 'way a funny hat memo'...
@bluediablo9 Well, you rinse with another Punch Brothers tune of course!
@ThePrefontaine you're effed up man
wow
It wont play on my ipod, could you please go to youtube settings and allow this beautiful song to play on ipods? Thank you in advance if you do it, or thank you for telling me why you can't. I love this song.
@SunKissedxO7 Listen, Rinse, Repeat? I don't even rinse. No time!
Love the track! Can't help but feeling studio sessions like this shouldn't be adding quite so much reverb after the fact. Sounds great I just want to hear it raw.
This is bluegrass partner. (at least bluegrass instruments). the instruments take turns keeping the rhythm
Do you think that he is (chris thile) jude law's little brother? If so, thumbs up!
chuck norris dislikes he doesnt need luck.
esta bueníisima esta canción!!! where i get the lyrics???
This is a great performance and recording, but is there anywhere on the internet where I can listen to the studio version? Is there one?
Look. It's Ramsay Bolton singing.
Bit of a stretch
Eymen Kilic Iwan Rheon (Ramsay) actually sings in real life. he has a couple albums out look them up ! lol
@nmfarlow I can't really see the headstock to well...what makes you think it's that guitar? I certainly could be wrong, but Critter strikes me as a classic type guy, D-28 maybe?
she hould have top comment she has 70 thumbs
Dónde ver la letra en español???soy de Argentina.
wrong, the bass is playing harmonics or high notes. definitely not lip synched.
what are their other blue grass type songs
Really random thought. This singer looks a little like Peter Steele.
Oh my goodness. Marry me(=
@UglyGirlSingsGood stay strong
Does anyone have guitar tabs/chords for this song?
thump if you cant see the dislike bar
