Punch Brothers: NPR Music Tiny Desk Concert

- Spoiler alert: The Punch Brothers came to the Tiny Desk on Chris Thile's birthday. We made him a cake and gave him an NPR surprise! This wasn't the first time the brilliant mandolinist had brought a project to my desk - it was his fourth. The last time was with his longtime band Nickel Creek, but also with his new braces. So the cake we presented here was inscribed "Brace Yourself Chris Happy Birthday." He blew out the candles and then, along with this versatile and talented band, rocked our world.
Punch Brothers mixes the worlds of bluegrass, pop and classical. It's a tough combination to imagine, an even harder one to make work, but this band of fiddler, Gabe Witcher, Noam Pikelny on banjo, guitarist Chris Eldridge and bassist Paul Kowert make the unimaginable contagious and fun. They push boundaries and make music like no one else.
Set List
• "My Oh My" 2:04
• "Boll Weevil" 6:23
• "Magnet" 10:36
• "Julep" 14:45

If you'd like to come see us live (in admittedly less cozy venues), our spring tour kicks off next week. You can visit PunchBrothers.com for details. Thanks everyone!
I ABSOLUTELY LOVE YOU GUYS! God, Tiny Desk is one of my favourite things in the world and for you guys to visit it is just too damn perfect.
.
Punch Brothers I saw this video and now we're going to see you guys when you come to Dallas in april-
Saw you guys in Vancouver, BC last night, it was FANTASTIC! I would definitely come again!
See you in Roanoke in July!
That moment when you find your old bandmate from high school is the bassist for the punch brothers. Hi, Paul!
@I'm not Laura Kightlinger absolutely didn't. I literally had to look it up as I watched this video because of how familiar he looked.
nice paul has some serious bass skills
@@bjornvanderlinden2248 To say the least. You think that's impressive, the guy can play a mean mandolin too. We used to cover a lot of Nickel Creek songs so the fact that he's playing with The Punch Brothers is kind of surreal.
@@Guitarchitect85 "that moment" posts, are meant to be something other people can relate to. It's cool that you were in school with him, but literally no one else can relate to this
@@icostarema Congratulations, you found the joke. I'm very proud of you.
Jude Law and Quentin Tarantino had a baby it was Chris Thile.
+dylan watkins and a smidge of dave matthews?
+dylan watkins Its not enough for me to like this, I have to commend you Sir. Greatest ship everrrr.
+dylan watkins it's me, or there's also a little bit of damon albarn?
not sure if I ever heard of him.
lol ! and a tiny bit of Willem Dafoe :)
Chris Thile has some really great facial expressions when he's deep in a jam. It's like he's playing metal & just rocking out yet he's doing it & killing it on a Mandolin.
Hey man, music is music. You get really into a jam, you forget what the body does sometimes. Bluegrass at this point is an extension of jazz/metal/country/rock/etc, and can hit HARD. I've seen bluegrass bands hit tighter and more insane sets than half of the metal bands I've seen...honestly, half of the bluegrass you'll see at a local bluegrass festival are are going to be just as technically proficient (or more) than a ton of metal bands. The musicianship is insane.
He’s immensely talented but it’s hard to watch, honestly.
Dakota Fanning
@@KC-fb8ql I love watching him. it's clear that he's having a lot of fun. he actually stated in an interview that he doesn't even notice how much he moves around while he's performing without watching the videos. not many people love what they do as much as him and not many people are as good at it either.
@@KC-fb8ql Don't watch and be quiet.
You can bring Chris back as often as you'd like. :D
Jack Johnson
Heck, Daily if possible!
oh good I thought I was the only one who thought he looked like jude law's twin
The sheer focus on the bass player is the perfect backdrop to the mayhem unfolding before him.
Huge props to the sound engineer on this one.
Got so much more of the bass than some other performances on NPR. Woop
Snylivan sex videos
There is a video of these guys talking about playing in a group. They mention playing around a single mic and how mindful they are of their stage placement to balance their volumes. Even here you can see them move away and closer to the mic as they play.
This is purely musicians that listen to each other when they play!
Yeah they are a huge part of how the sound is good. They know how to work a single mic amazingly. I've seen them do it live.
I honestly can't tell (just by listening) their live performances apart from their studio performances. They sound perfect in every way
I believe they usually record as a band in one take much like they're playing here. Could be wrong but it would make sense!
I was thinking that too, how they sound perfectly like they do in the studio versions, excepting the odd improvised flourish.
I had the same thought! Even people I consider to be incredible singers like adele and lizzo are occasionally slightly off key in their tiny desks, but these guys' pitch and harmonies are flawless it's insane
Chris always looks just like he's just woken up.
13:15 in - Pickles just casually melting faces off to the side like no big deal.
2:03 - My Oh My
6:24 - Boll Weevil
10:32 - Magnet
14:45 - Julep
1:22 - Happy Birthday!
Noam Pikelny (banjo player) came to my university and I went to the concert not knowing anything about him or his music, and left a huge fan!
The more I listen to this (and I listen a lot) the more impressed I am with Noam Pikelny's banjo work on "Magnet". I mean, they're all fabulous, but wow, 13:15...
These compositions are off the hook and beautifully executed. They don't play by the rules.
Rob Stewart I think there’s gonna be new rules when they’re done
"now that time stands still, we can drink our fill. Out of silver that will never tarnish like we will". Wow.... just amazing. Simply... amazing.
Daroff absolutely agree, that's a deep line
I just noticed that line as well after 7 years of listening. Amazing!
Can we all just take a moment to appreciate that guy on the banjo, amazing!
He actually gives Bela Fleck some competition!
Noam was dubbed the best Banjo player in the world today by Steve Martin. Pretty nice crew in my opinion.
@@matthias.hess1 I know right
Band chemistry goals.
"Anyone have an authoritative A?" "I've got a couple of 'em." these nerds
"Next up: Chris Thile's Barbershop Quartet. Then his Klezmer band. Then it's Chris on bagpipes and didgeridoo."
Critter always looks so happy when he's playing guitar, happiest guy in the world
The next time I hear the words, Punch Brothers, Nickel Creek, or Chris Thile, I will pay close attention.
Thanks, NPR.
Here I am having just discovered these lovely folk in 2017...! Oh the joy of dicovery. xx
me, too!
Or, the Goat Rodeo Sessions ...
You should also check out Paul Kowert's (the bassist) band Hawktail 😜
Why Should The Fire Die is such a great album!
The first time I heard Punch Brothers was about two years ago, on this particular set. The first harmony on My Oh My was the first cognisant memory I have of saying "this is the music my soul has been searching for" and haven't looked back. By far my favorite band. I was able to see them live in Madison, WI in March 2019 and it is one of the most memorable nights of my life....still send chills down my spine, Love you guys!
When you encounter greatness, you just have to sit back, relax and watch the show. Chris Thile is a legend.
He is a bad person though and hated by everyone. Even his Nickelcreek bandmates the Watkins siblings hate him.
@dougierichardson484 Yet, he has two bands he works with. Nickel Creek just finished a tour with him. Perhaps he's difficult, and a perfectionist, and has issues with others, but that doesn't make him hated.
@@archywiseman The Watkins use him since he is talented musically but they dont like him. Once he loses his voice and talent as a musician they will never talk to him again. The same with his Punch Brother bandmates.
You can tell a technically tight band by how quickly they can pull together something they haven't practiced. HAPPY BIRTHDAY
yeah
Well no. Somebody says "key of c" and then happy birthday is really basic to play. That's not a big thing. They are absolutely great anyway!!
Why haven’t I heard this group before? Where have you been all my life? So enjoyable!! I love their music….very talented.
If you don’t know - check out nickel creek
Wish Noam would stand closer to the mic so I could hear his crazy improvs on Magnet. Such a mindblowing band, I can't stop listening to this record.
Chris Thile is a force of nature. A supremely gifted artist. The rest of the band is fantastic too. Try to catch the Punch Brothers live, and consider yourself lucky if you do.
That banjo player is so sickkkkkkk, but hes just hiding back there haha
Noam Pikelny. A master.
@@BikesAndBatallas possibly the best contemporary 5-string player. Also one of the few to find real mainstream success in the modern day.
Also a master of deadpan humor.
Check out Noam Pikelny with Caitlin Canty!! Pure Gold!!
@@anameofsomesort959 I love Pikelny (and had photo taken with him at Telluride!!), but Bela Fleck isn't dead.
I applauded alone in my house for this!
cmpmuller you're not alone!
+mkmoroney1 scary
+Lint I didn't find it scary. I was amused, then I read your comment and then found it scary. The mind is easily manipulated.
Ah yes, I remember those innocent days of the past when blowing all over a cake and then sharing it wasn't completely insane. Good times.
Man. Things are really gonna be different forever huh?
Its not completely insane. Its normal.
@@Greencheezy0 Yep, the billionaires gonna eat dirt over this one.
I still do it.
It still isn't completely insane
I love how so much of punch brothers music is rhythmically very reminiscent of a ticking clock. Been a while since I've listened to their albums. I think it's time again.
Daaayyuumn that banjo shred for "Magnet"
17:26 I CAN'T EVER ADEQUATELY PREPARE MYSELF FOR THE BEAUTY OF THIS MOMENT
Chelsea Sharpe amen, the whole performance was great but that just blew me away.
Chelsea Sharpe why are they so perfect!!!!
Love your comment. You can't ever really prepare for something truly beautiful. Every time you hear or see something in that realm it flows straight through you and rearranges your molecules.
Chills!! The whole song was ethereal, but when they came back in singing...wow.
100% agree with you. Time does seem to stand still in that moment
Well. It took me a while to arrive here. TLDR: I've been watching Punch Brothers videos for two days. These guys are absolutely amazing. Every single one of them.
It all started when I recently heard Chris Thile on A Prairie Home Companion. It was the first time I'd heard it without Garrison Keillor, so I immediately noticed (I grew up with it playing every weekend in my house), and thought, "nahhhhh." I was about to shut it off, when I heard that [Judge] John Hodgman was on the show. I love him, so I left it on. Then, Chris started playing music. So I decided to Google him and found out that he (1) is an "American virtuoso mandolinist," and (2) created Punch Brothers, who a friend recommended to me years ago. THEN, I youtubed "Punch Brothers," and now: here I am. Apparently forever.
Thank you, NPR, for always delivering!
Emily Cross Haha great comment. You're about ten years late but, nonetheless, welcome! Pull up a chair and enjoy the ride.... This guy is a constant source of entertainment and possibly one of the few true musical geniuses left in the world! Also, check out nickel Creek and the goat rodeo sessions (him with yoyo ma, Edgar Meyer and Stuart Duncan) it's all magic!
Kyle Hurd I feel like us late fans are right on time though because now I can just binge-listen hahaha
GutterTrash Barbie Binge listening: my favorite.
GutterTrash Barbie well true lol
Emily Cross I still binge listen to this day!
Chris Thile just seems like a ball of sunshine and these guys are so freaking good! I'm a late fan but wow I am definitely a fan :3
I absolutely adore Chris and the band. Most important music happening these days.
I might submit Snarky Puppy for that status.
I'd definitely have a hard time choosing between the two for the title of "Most Important"! Glad I don't have to make that decision :)
I actually told Chris last time I saw them live that I'd love to see them collaborate with Snarky Puppy. Told Michael League the same thing. They're both aware of the others and said something along the lines of "don't count it out!"
Had the chance to see these guys here in Brisbane. They are infallible... a class of their own, and a very big inspiration to this musician.
Thanks for puttin' me on to them. Changed my life. ;)
Can we all just appreciate how adorable Chris was when they brought the birthday cake in?
real musicians tune in the middle of the set.
Without tuners.
I can't even explain how much I love this band.
These guys are their own genre. Bluegrass as the world has never heard it before.
I'm in love with Chris Thile. To see his eyes filled with pure joy while making music just makes me love him. Honestly. ;) Awesome stuff!!!
Passion is contagious and inspiring.
Me too and for SO many different reasons lol.
Amazing. All the tracks were great but that last tune just about gave me goose bumps.
Wow, no one fighting in the comments section... Love the Indie folk comments sections, if you can consider it that. Take care everyone.
it's great. but ajj comment sections is like what japan was after hiroshima and nagasaki
HOW DARE YOU CALL THIS INDIE FOLK!!!!
Bluegrass bruh
scored free tickets to their perth WA tour in 2016, brilliant just brilliant, complex, creative, crazy combos all gathered around the one mike, bought the cd, tea-shirt and now a big fan
Also damn, they are amazing, specially the fiddle player's drumming lol
The smile on the guitarists face makes my day. He's loving every second of it.
I keep coming back just to watch them perform Julep.. It's entrancing, so much emotion.
I saw them at Bonnaroo last year and then they played the Superjam right after their show and they were just truly amazing! I had never listened to them before but I'm so glad I decided to stop by. Such amazing music that just comes naturally. They did a cover of "Just What I Needed" by the Cars that I'm so so glad that I recorded because it was so good.
I've run into Thile's performances in the past. If something in the form of a musical expression comes together and has Chris Thile's name in the mix, it has to be good (I think it is a basic law of music theory). That is said not to take anything away from the rest of the guys in the band though, they all added to the songs we just heard and are premier musicians as well. What came together here is simply great.
No matter how many times I watch this (and it's a lot), this will remain one of the greatest live performances I've ever seen. Just immaculate.
I want someone to look at me the way Eldridge looks at Thile.
Don't we all.
Lol
Chris's reaction to the birthday cake never fails to bring a smile to my face.
Genuine happiness. Love Chris!
So wonderful to witness genius and brilliance in my lifetime. I am truly grateful.
Great comment. I feel the same way.
On a day when music meant nothing, finally music means everything. Thank you, Chris (and Co.). Passion reigns and I am grateful.
Watching the love on Chris E.'s face watching Chris. T. have a moment is the greatest joy to me of this TDC. I have followed his dad since 1971. Beautiful.
For 'Julep', almost never heard a Bass (or maybe a group) so perfectly tuned! Such commitment to perfection with soul is hard to find generally but not so rare at The Tiny Desk, always come back here! And share this treasure to preserve it!
I was gonna wait until Bonnaroo to see these guys, but this performance has made me 100% positive that I want to see them at The Fonda here in LA. Jesus, they are good.
Unbelievable. Honestly, the best band on the planet right now. Argue with me if you want, but I'm a Punch Brother zealot - I will not be swayed.
Daniel LeMay I won't argue with you and/or be swayed either because you're absolutely CORRECT!
I will not either!
Dan L well, maybe you ain’t heard of billy strings, ? New kid on the block, you want amazing, he is
Magnet. That is an awesome song. couldn't get over how cool it was.
Yesssss....keep coming back for that one!
These guys are wonderful. Now, if you could bring Chris Eldridge back in at a later date, this time with his platonic boyfriend Julian Lage, my life would pretty much be complete.
I seen them live twice!
Kirstine Hansen Chris and Julian will be doing a small tour after the PB tour is over...limited engagements (2 here in the S.F.Bay Area)
this is one of the most heart-warming beginnings to a npr tiny desk :)
God damn Chris is magnificent. Love Magnet, so great. He doesn't just play the music, her performs!
The ending of julep will always be my fav part of this video, beautifully done boys ! 👏👏
I first heard My Oh My when I was reading Even Cowgirls get the Blues by Tom Robbins and this song will always be the theme song for that book in my mind ☺️ "the whole world spinning under our thumbs..." 👍🏽
Man, Chris Thile is the Jerry Lee Lewis of Mandolin. He plays that thing likes he's trying to start a fire in a hurricane.
This is so wonderful! I had the privilege of meeting these guys after their show in Atlanta on Feb. 26th. They're all so nice and down to earth. Chris is especially sweet and gives great hugs :)
Decided to start going though all of NPR's TIny Desks. Came across this, and WOW. Love at first sight (sound?). Instantly went to look at tour dates. They aren't coming to TX any time soon, unfortunately.
BeeKeezy sadly you just missed their two TX dates. (Austin and Dallas) Saw two nights in San Francisco (4/3, 4/4) prior to their TX shows and I had to contact my TX friends to get them out to see them.
Wow! This is the first time I ever hear their music. They all seem so genuine and happy folks!
These guys are such a GREAT fit for the Tiny Desk! We were blown away by their set at HOB Boston last month. Great guys, amazing musicians.
WGBH Music ...and Thanks so much for posting the videos from HOB. I was able to see them both night in San Francisco at The Fillmore where as you might suspect, I was right in front/center at the barricade both nights and it STILL sounded that good.
I love how Chris Thile is the only one who's been in there so many times
He has the most heart warming smile
Paul's dance at 6:35 is is easily the best thing about this amazing performance.
This is a fact, proven by peer-reviewed research and philosophers everywhere: it is impossible to look at Chris Thile and not smile. That man just makes me so happy. I'm so happy he hosts Live From Here now.
His smile is so infectious, and so is his groove. You have to see his performance on the Vulfpeck live at madison square garden. The dude is possessed, it's awesome !
I'm glad to find out that the fiddler is still dilf-y
Anything with Chris Thile is pure magic!
The 80s underground traditionally influenced avant garde stuff was pretty cool. Bands like the Horseflies took music indescribable places...... This group of musicians around now including the Punch Brothers that take all those influences and turn them into genre-spanning beauty are amazing. I've seen nothing like this that lasted as this has.
Just found this group and now they are on the top of my list to see live in concert!!
You have to- they are do much fun live!
They're phenomenal live, it's well worth the ticket!
These guys are the best. We had the privilege of seeing them play in Shetland in August. Wow!!!!! Unforgettable. What a concert. Thank you Punch Brothers. Hope to see you again soon. x
omg that first song when they get really soft is eargasmic
I literally cannot get enough of this. I play this concert every day. :) Such a wonderful atmosphere these guys create...
Chris Thile is god tier
The musicianship of this band is unbelievable! Thanks NPR for bringing us the music!! 🐣🇨🇦
Okay, I'm not knocking on him... but every Punch Brothers video I've watched, I couldn't understand why the banjo player looked so familiar. I finally realized he looks like the bald eagle in the Muppets.
GOLD
or Dan Akroyd
What a call!
or jimmy kimmel
Colin Crombie UR NOT WRONG THO
I've heard people say Chris Thile is currently the best mandolin player in the world. Others dispute it. However, the best argument I've heard that everyone seems to agree with is that Chris is the most IMPORTANT mandolin player in the world. As a bluegrass ambassador, mandolin player, composer, singer, and all-around musician he seems to have this bottomless well of talent. Simply amazing.
I heard him the other day on a Prairie Home Companion-he was great! Apparently he is taking over for Garrison Keillor.
+Karen Katz they were all great-didn't mean to disrespect the rest of the band.
could you please tell me where you heard or saw this? i have not seen prairie home companion for many years. i use to watch this show all the time. thanks
Tune back in! Chris did officially take over, and it's experienced a bit of a revival because of his involvement.
Revived? It's superior. It's listenable. It's fun. No longer do I reach to the dial to change the station, but to crank the volume up. Thile is the best thing to happen to weekend evening programming on NPR.
I never get tired of listening to Punch Brothers (or Chris Thile).
Maybe the day will come where I don't watch this. But I can't see that happening in the foreseeable future. Just amazing.
One of the best bands out there today.
Someday I'll probably get myself to stop watching this... today is not that day. Such great music, made by people who very obviously love what they do.
The Banjo 13:16 - 13:43. Wow. Noam. C'mon.
Noam is where the heart is
Praise be to the video editor for not cutting away from the wide shot during that insanity.
Gold standard badassery.
those high notes are insane
My favorite ‘old-time string band’ of all time. Happy incredibly belated birthday, Chris!
These guys are the most AMAZING artists. So beautiful!!!!
An absolutely masterful concert, their sound is not only at the same level as the recording it is even more vivid, these guys have an amazing chemistry and are top notch, jesus i would definitely pay to see chris thile have his own late night, he is an entertainer and musician of the highest caliber.
Banjo player is Noam pikilney(sp) and he was voted by his peers and won the award of the best banjo player by Steve martin and Bela Fleck
Obsessed with magnet, love love love....and the rest of it too obviously - ty a NPR from the bottom of my heart for giving me the gift of Chris Thile!! ;)
I'm surprised RUclips hasn't pulled this for copyright for "Happy Birthday."
It actually finally entered the public domain. So they should be safe now ☺
