Familiarity absolutely broke me when I saw them at Suwannee Roots Revival last year. It's one of those medicine songs I put on when things get too big. Seriously grateful for that tune right there.
As a 75 year old ( English ) Rock / Fusion Jazz / Funk/ World music fan, i have to say that i am totally blown away by these guys originality & virtuosity, i'm guessing Chris Thiele does a lot of the writing, ( only because he seems to be the most eccentric of the group ) anyway i shall now be diving deep into the Punch Bros. rabbit hole & will no doubt have lots of fun discovering the rest of their work. ( P.S. also love Brittany Haas & Hawktail ) Long live Americana music & a big shout out to Whitney Webb.....
@@magalahiguahan it really has opened up music for me trying to learn it! Like on other instruments. Im a dilettante at best. But i have so much fun playing it. It feels like it's in my blood. Everything with strings id like to have a go at.
I got out of the Navy 50 years ago... that backdrop is so calling me.... Then there's this fantastic voyage of their music. Carry Me away. Watch... At Break Down. Been there. It is frantic. General Quarters. All hands heave out. Save this ship and crew. My soul is a sailor
I was at this show in the front few rows and @ 21:36 in This Girl you can see Chris smiling directly at me while I was singing back at him. Will honestly never forget that moment, such an awesome show.
You can see his bandmates sitting in the background and just enjoying it too. So great! It's a different solo than the album. They just keep pushing, every time, to make it better.
An audience to die for - boisterous and yet respectful, They seem to know all the band's material and love every second of it... and they sing on pitch!
Chris Thile has an amazing way of pulling together talent like this. Goat Rodeo Sessions is equally amazing - I'd give my left tit to see them live (Am going to see Punch Bros in a couple hours!! SO EXCITED!!) Will be my third time seeing Thile in one form or another, but first time seeing Punch Bros live.

Thank you, I was wondering why there was no "another new world" (LOVE that song so much. bummed it was not included in the set) I get to see them next Sunday!! WEE
I want see Chris's brain in an FMRI machine when he starts familiarity. There's so much concentration, his eyes go dead as if he's a video game character.
The transition from Angel of Doubt to This Girl feels like they're saying, "Well, now that we've all looked deep into our souls and questioned everything we value, let's sing some sacrilege about a cute girl by way of retreat."
To me, the best part of this concert, by far, is a section that lasts less than two minutes in the middle of "It's Part of the Plan". Noam and Chris perform two solos, and OH MY GOD, the virtuosism is OVERWHELMING! Both solos are super short. One wishes they would go on and on, like in a jazz improv session, but no, it's just a taste of what they both are capable of doing, and they leave you salivating and wanting more. Again, the virtuosism in this band is unparalleled. I had the pleasure of seeing them in Dallas, and I can only say I'm so happy Chris decided to visit our planet.
When I saw them in Roanoke VA a few yrs ago the mics quit working the first two times they began to play Familiarity. Chris said “we’re going to try this as many times as it takes bc we know u folks want to hear this.” Third time was a charm. And it was amazing.
I've watched this performance a couple dozen times now. It's my work anthem. I have tickets to see Punch Brothers in March. I can't imagine seeing such a powerful performance live. Gives me shivers just thinking about it.
This is one of my favorite sets of all time. My friends and I play this any time there’s a party afoot. I’m writing this as I sip coffee and start my Saturday off the best way possible!
I’m writing this while I trim my coffee tree and sip espresso made from freshly roasted beans. Oh, theres the doorbell.. the first of my visitors has arrived for a little soirée I’m having in my upstate, uptown apartment. Just fuckin with ya
Got to see these guys years ago in Lexington, Ky when they were How to Grow a Band. My son was a young aspiring mandolin player at the time and Chris was gracious enough to talk to him personally, sign his mandolin, and have a pic taken together. He's still one of my son's heroes.
I was at this show, and had no idea it was being recorded. The new album is outstanding, and I love that they played some deep cuts! And all of us singing My Oh My is something I'll never forget.
So what would you call this? It's a bluegrass type ensemble and style, but it's on another level in the clouds. I mean, bluegrass is always on a high level in musicianship, but this is unparalleled. I've been following Pikelny and Thiel for a few years, now- the violinist is incredible but I'm not as familiar with him, nor the bassist - but they're ALL top tier musicians, of course and obviously. I love these guys and I love RUclips Premium for enabling me to watch and listen to them.👍❤
I remember watching Noam Pikelny play one of his first shows with Leftover on Halloween 2002 at the Fillmore in Denver. He was dressed as a chicken and Vince Herman kept calling him "chicken boy" all night. I was super close to the stage and could have sworn he was close to tears. Perhaps my senses were a bit, um, dimmed and I was reading into it a bit. Anyway... he went on to become quite accomplished
What the fuck is this?? How does it grab my heart, and suck me down to the bottom of the ocean, and I hold my breath, but I hear it whispering in my ear that I can breathe, and then I breathe, and I am home where I've never been before? How does it doe this to me (metaphorically speaking)?
The Angel of Doubt is seriously funky, Familiarity exquisite, saw them live with Sarah Jarosz and Watchhouse this summer. Couldn’t hold back the tears for the shear beauty of the music. One satisfied fan here.
I had to sign into my account just to like this. Punch Brothers are such an amazing group, and even listening to songs I've heard the studio version of, theres something about seeing them play it. Chris is pretty much the god of my little music world.
This show (and band in general) is filled with so many fantastic musical moments it's absurd. Familiarity alone brings me to tears with its power and beauty.
First time hearing these talented musicians and just at the right time in 2021! Very cool Combinations of instruments integrating bluegrass, jazz and more with wonderful thoughtful and inspirational lyrical content! Nice!
Thanks for sharing this. This band is just one of the best. I saw them in Sydney and I would see them over and over again. Amazing musicianship, vocals are out of this world.
Mind-blowingly talented. They just keep getting better and better...and Funkier and FUNKIER! Just Look At This Mess has us all doing the "white man's overbite! :) Talk about "in-the-pocket". Oh my GOD!! PLEASE COME TO VANCOUVER CANADA. You will SELL OUT. PLEASE!!...please? :)

Saw them last Friday in Clearwater and paid for the VIP preshow where did 3 covers and had Q&A. Memorable night with musicians that love what they do and fans that love how they do it.
I saw these bros at ROMP sometime in 2011. I have to say they were great then & they just keep getting better. I don’t know if there’s ever perfection, but to me these guys come close.

Que MARAVILHA! Thanks for sharing this wonderful performance.
They were playing around two mikes in Philly a couple weeks ago. Had much the feel of their one-mike sets, and was magical indeed. I think they have to adjust their setup to venues. They also unplugged entirely for their last encore (Familiarity), which was such a special moment. You can hear it here: ruclips.net/video/lACYOl-nU9M/видео.html. Decent sized standing venue, almost total attentive silence from the audience.
YES! I saw them and they played around one microphone, moving a way at the end of each of their phrases.... the audience was truly in awe. A highlight of my life!
You know what's better than one mic? Having mics on everything with a professional sound system and sound engineer ruining it. Lacking control over sound which is is critical in a large venue because you feel cool using a single mic is a disservice to your fans. I get it lots of big fans like to say they were there for shows where a band did something "different", but that does not always mean the show was actually better.
Ellen this was the same setup here as in philly. 2 mics for vocals and instruments micd. I wouldn't call playing unplugged in a large venue a good experience although certainly unexpected. It sounded a lot better than the 1 mic tour.
i saw them at the recital centre about three years before you did! i'm kind of sad because i don't think i'm ever going to see such a good show again in my life
C'est toujours un plaisir de regarder encore et encore ce live de cette belle tournée! J'étais au concert à Paris , en fin de tournée mondiale et quel pied!!!!!
Since then only Punch Brothers have matched that feeling of excitement. I’m looking forward to seeing them live in London in November. They really are one of the most amazing groups to have arrived in the last 50 years
In a pre-show performance before their NYC performance, someone asked them about "This Girl" and why they had seemingly changed it up. Chris pondered it for a moment and in their half-sentence way of communicating, Gabe reminded him they had had a long day in the studio and things were just not gelling that day. So as something of musical palate cleanser, they ripped through some high speed bluegrass piece then recorded the "Who's Feeling Young Now?" version in one take. It was something they didn't typically do and ended up really liking it. ruclips.net/video/Ci7gW23stZU/видео.html Chris admitted it was awfully fast on the album and the band generally nodding in agreement. To underscore that, Paul Kowart who generally keeps his expressions in a rear pocket, mocking drooped in exhaustion over his bass as Chris said that. I will say I appreciated the the tension, anxiety, energy, humorous desperation mixed in with the album version, but agree this live version has beautifully filled out. It's some true-ass genius that can bring two equally enchanting versions of the same song to us.
Going to miss Gabe immensely, but can’t help thinking how much it will benefit his family. This band has brought so much amazing music into my life. Looking forward to the next chapter… my o my what a wonderful gift they have given us these last 18 years.
Got to see them last night in OKC, and it was just incredible! Got to have my elbows on the stage which was great. They were all so interactive and energized!

Chris's smile when the crowd gets excited to hear Familiarity 🥺
It's ironic. They're cheering for a song that is (partly) about loving songs you know

I will say I appreciated the the tension, anxiety, energy, humorous desperation mixed in with the album version, but agree this live version has beautifully filled out. It's some true-ass genius that can bring two equally enchanting versions of the same song to us.
The album version definitely drives harder. I think I prefer this one now.
Just bought tickets for their one gig in London this year - can't wait!!
I was there last night. It was worth every penny and more. Seeing these guys live is an awesome experience that I'll never forget.
Love the way you catch that backbeat Chris so cool.
Thank you WGBH!!
Noam is, well probably my third favorite banjo player ever

Man, first song, that fiddle is like a metronome at the beginning.
What music, love it
Going to miss Gabe immensely, but can’t help thinking how much it will benefit his family. This band has brought so much amazing music into my life. Looking forward to the next chapter… my o my what a wonderful gift they have given us these last 18 years.
Got to see them last night in OKC, and it was just incredible! Got to have my elbows on the stage which was great. They were all so interactive and energized!
