Story-time: I work in a little cafe in Budapest, and I was listening to Andrew Bird all day, and then a cute family came in... and they just said me surprised: "AH! That's Andrew Bird!" and I was happy someone else listens to him... but it turned out the father know Andrew, they played together in concert and Andrew was his violin teacher. And the man! Just randomly sent him a video message about the cafe shop and me working and the music!!! AND HE RESPONDED IMMEDIATELY! "Thank you, my friend, to show me! I was thinking about to stop writing music, but now I know there is someone in a little cafe who still plays my music, makes me happy, so maybe I won't stop it today. :)" It was so kind and funny!!!! So thank you NPR and this video to show me his wonderful music years ago!
Honest people who write honest music should never consider stopping. They often achieve that which other artists can only dream about, though the latter may often be in the spotlight of the world while the former are not. However, I listen to music as old as animals, yet when I listen to this I appreciate it and it attracts me, and I ain't no insect attracted to just any light. :) Quality over quantity is what each man or woman should wish for, to strive for. This has actually happened to many artists who have attracted a whole lot of, let's say, teenage fans. They have eventually come to wish for an audience of higher education and refinement, precisely for the difficulty that presents itself in attracting such a fan base, or even just an occasional listener who will choose to nod his head in approval, if only just once. It acts as a measure of the artist's development in various areas of existence, be it the art itself, or the mind behind from which it emanates. By this I wish not to offend those who listen to music where the profound is considered that which is stupid, ostentatious, and lecherous, but it is only fair according to the rule of divine justice to express the thought this way, for he who has refused to move on the staircase of life cannot complain when those who have climbed higher above have no desire to come back down. It is a greater sin to be high up the staircase and become stagnant than to be at the lowest point yet trying to move upwards. That's why there still is a thread that connects those high up there and those who are at the beginning of their journey, the thread of kindness delivered to all those who wish to advance towards knowledge, through reason and love. That is why, in the end, even great scientists such as Carl Sagan or Richard Feynman had given lectures to the general populace, to any mind that had desired to learn and take another step into the unknown and understand it. And in our universe, there is not only one set of stairs, but there are many. Therefore cooperation is imperative, necessitated by the myriad of pathways that the universe abounds in. PS: I am from Slovakia, which is extremely close to Hungary, so he has at least two fans in two small countries of Europe. :) PS2: Thanks for the story, it was interesting and very nice.

And the fact he is whistling inward has always blown my mind as a musician. You can't whistle into a mic unless you're breathing inward. If you haven't seen his old shows where he played every instrument himself that's amazing too

The thing I love/hate about NPR is that often these live performances sound better than the album version of each song. It was true in the case of The National and it's again true here. Thanks Andrew for putting yourself out there~
I have to agree, and then disagree with you on that one. I agree think there are a few artists just lend themselves to performances better. But to explore their body of work before you inevitably go to their live performance, their studio albums act as a perfect catalyst. I do agree that after listening to the Tiny Desk versions, the albums leave you wanting more, but I think that is part of the draw. The artists that know they shine in live sort of use the studio albums as a trailer for their live performances in my opinion (could be 100% wrong). Also, thank you NPR for bringing these artists into the spotlight that maybe I would've taken a lot longer to stumble upon.
I am finding that with so many good live recordings out there, studio versions are often too clean and over produced. The live performances sound so good because they are organic and in the moment.

Am I the only one who has discovered Andrew Bird from this video, went to listen to his songs on Spotify and come back to this video over and over again because they are so much better than studio recordings?
Hi albums are polished, but I've seen him live several times and it's so amazing! I think he's the type of artist that prefers to do live performances. If you want a real experience, you should check out his performance of "Anonanimal" that Pitchfork posted in 2009. It's e t h e r e a l.
I think I first heard of Bird in like 2006? I've never really listened to any of his work though, not until now. So I guess that's 10 years that I could have spent listening to better music. Well, better late than never.
Yes, well said! And it's the story of our lives mate! Everything on NPR is new to me (except say Cranberries, Natalie Merchant, and a few others). The real treats, like Dakha Braka,, Frederic Yonnet, EFI, etc. are totally new to me (and probably many others). I've not heard more than 5 to 10 of my own sounds since I discovered the width of stugg you can listen to on Tiny Desk!
JOSH ROGOSIN - Sound engineer of this and other records: thank you for this beautiful sound, I like all bands at Tiny Desk Concert better than they original studio recordings. It's amazing and you really opened the new world of music for me. Thank You!
I fucking love tiny desk. I've discovered countless gems through these gigs and they always get the sound absolutely perfect. It would be a dream to go to one of these gigs one day.
Andrew Bird has the refined talent and deep emotional involvement that is comparable to Thom Yorke from Radiohead, which is not a statement that I could make about any other musician that I know of. Quite honestly, it's fair to say that Andrew Bird is the more light hearted and optimistic brother, while Thom will always be wavering in his existential dread. Both of these men live in a dream, you can see it in their faces and body movements when they perform. Almost identical, the way Andrew looks in this video playing the violin solos as Thom does with his piano. Truly fascinating, these mirrored reflections from the same image - opposite styles. Yin and yang, why you so crazy?
What a captivating sound. I have played this over 20x and still enjoy every bit of the raw instrumentals and whimsical whistling. I wish Bird's entire album was done in this fashion!
Roma Fade just slaps you in the face so hard you can't resist its effects. it's so good. i honestly don't know how i learned of andrew's music but i sure am glad i did.
Had the pleasure of sharing a stage with him in 2014 when I appeared with the quartet Flying Mountain at the Vancouver Folk Festival. A wonderful performer. Love his melodic lines and the crazy twist he gives his songs. Great to hear him here.
My jaw dropped when reading your comment! I was friends with Ferguson Neville and knew the band Flying Mountain back in the 70's and early 80's. Wow. And went to visit Fergi and stayed with them for a couple weeks. The band played a special event on a boat on Howe Sound for theater performers . You must know StreetHearts too? Babs Chula? Helen Davis? I knew them when they lived in Hawaii and even lived with Helen for a while. Wow. Bird connections!
This was ethereal omg. The only Andrew Bird song I’ve been listening to non stop for 2 years was Left Handed Kisses and that was amazing but omg the rest of his work is heartstoppingly beautiful
I wish Andrew Bird and the band would concert in Europe. This decadent atmosphere, lively delicate acoustics and compositions are so moving ❤🌟🍀 Lucky you who can attend his performances 😊
I knew Andrew in middle school. He was just beginning to realize his exceptional whistling abilities. He would whistle around campus and impress staff members during break time. Bullies would make comments about his real last name, Bemfartske. "Hey Andy, I can smell the farts before they even come out." Stuff like that. So rude and hurtful. I fully respect his new stage last name, Bird. It fits. Love this guy.
Jesus H. Murphy Christ, from the first note to the last I've been pulling my hair out of astonishment watching this band perform. I'm sooo impressed and inspired, I just hope this group reads this and appreciates it.
I've been listening to Andrew Bird since 2007, and this particular video makes me cry at least 2 times. This sort of talent is really beautiful, and I appreciate the artistry. I also call Andrew "The Amplifier" as whatever you're feeling in the moment will be always be amplified. Whether it is happiness, nostalgia, loneliness, or sadness. It will become more when you listen to Andrew Bird.
Love coming back to this tiny desk, every few months. Such a good performance, even beyond the screen, and after 7 years, I feel like I'm right there, so soulful.
A whistling guitar player playing guitar on the violin with a stellar verbal lexicon in the form of folk music and indie rock is pure bliss=]. Hilley Crystal would be proud of the country bluegrass, gourmand, and blues representation=]
10 seconds into the first song, I bought an album. Then I looked him up and realized he was in another favorite band - Squirrel Nut Zippers. Refreshing!
I saw Squirrel Nut Zippers back in the day, just after Hot made it big, in Boston, with a few of my best friends. Incredible music and energy, what fun!
Man! The comment section here is so enriching. To find so many Andew Bird new and old fans, who probably have no body in their close circles to share their joy of listening to his melodies. Like I went alone to his show, could not convince one friend to come with me. 😬 But the admiration his fan have for him is deep, almost as if of wanting to protect this kind of rich music and artistic exploration in the face of opposing economic incentives. What I take as a lesson from Andrew Bird is to be true to yourself. You do you. He could have gone mainstream and have more money and fans than he has, but would he have been more fulfilled? Also thanks to Andrew Bird I found NPR Tiny Desk, where I’ve found so many other brilliant artists and bands. Though I must say I find Tiny Desk versions to be much much much better than the ones on Spotify.
I wish more musicians would make a break for the door, and escape the traditional studio manufactured recording. I am constantly looking for a simple live, acoustic recording to listen to at home.
Go listen to Anaïs Mitchell then, all of her albums (sans Young Man in America, which is still really good but just doesn't fall into the same vibe) have that unfinished, recorded outside vibe and she's so underappreciated Edit: she also made an appearance on Tiny Desk
So love how he arranged the series and music to this beautiful done "Outside In" . Incredible artist. This man plays a violin with a Bass Alto bow string. I salivate. Genius. What he does with music. Watch the movie and listen to what he does. ❤J🥰
Coming back to this video every two or three days. Andrew Bird and the band is bloody brilliant. I can't explain what the feeling is. It's pure, honest, explosive, calming, and puts me in a trance and nostalgia. And that first note of the solo at 3:28 is amazing. Just the look on Andrew's face says it all. A TRUE master of our time. Keep making music and we will listen. Still have yet to see him live! This year is a must!
Saw this wonderful man in London last month and he and his band were brilliant. Such a great talent and so modest. He goes to show that if you stick at something long enough and you will be recognised.
This man makes me feel like I have loved him on another life, and I'm still in love with him no matter how many lives have passed. The thought that I'll never meet him fills my heart with sadness
I just now came across this and not sure why this guy didn't become a huge star. He has amazing skills and a classic voice that I can see appealing to many. Maybe he's bigger than I know in circles, but I hadn't heard of him.
Word. Its a shame, but I hadn't heard of Andrew Bird until a month ago, when this suddenly popped up in my recomended videos. I can`t remember last time I was so blowned away by a perfomance like this one. Have comed back to this video probably 25 times since then (no kidding). And its all because of an Run The Jewels Tiny desk concert I watched a couple of years ago (yes, my music taste is all over the place) :D Thank you NPR!!

Andrew Bird is a musical genius.
he literally picked the three best tracks off the album i'm glad
So glad this video was made. Andrew bird needs more publicity
he whistles better than Edward Snowden
lol
That was good, lol.
Well, he whistles like a Bird!!
Love it!
HAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA HA!
I think I first heard of Bird in like 2006? I've never really listened to any of his work though, not until now. So I guess that's 10 years that I could have spent listening to better music.
Well, better late than never.
Same here.
AlmostSwedish nah. You obviously recognize amazing music so you must have been listening to some decent stuff. Your ears are just evolving.
I feel you.
It's ok. You'll get through this. You're safe now.
It's about damn time
thought exactly the same haha
JOSH ROGOSIN - Sound engineer of this and other records: thank you for this beautiful sound, I like all bands at Tiny Desk Concert better than they original studio recordings. It's amazing and you really opened the new world of music for me. Thank You!
Andrew and band totally cruising at all levels. That’s why we need live music right here. Disgustingly good sound guy
He sings and plays so effortlessly. Andrew bird forms the feels with every line and musical lick. Always will be one of favorites.
I fucking love tiny desk. I've discovered countless gems through these gigs and they always get the sound absolutely perfect. It would be a dream to go to one of these gigs one day.
Man, the audio on your videos is better than the actual CD release. Props to your sound department.
"His lyrics often have a calculated quality, filled with abundant wordplay and observations." What a wonderful description.
NPR tiny desk concerts are THE BEST CONCERTS on the RUclips!!! All of them. Short, interesting, lovely... I enjoy in all of them!!! Thanks NPR!!!
Roma Fade is sublime.
Zoey Iris Honestly!
Tiny Desk is honestly one of the best things ever to find new amazing music
Mike Love also
Wow....These are masterpieces, I couldn't imagine writing music like this.
THANKS NPR MUSIC FOR THIS DISCOVERY
What a captivating sound. I have played this over 20x and still enjoy every bit of the raw instrumentals and whimsical whistling. I wish Bird's entire album was done in this fashion!
The audio quality of this is incredible. I feel like I'm in the room with them!
Roma Fade just slaps you in the face so hard you can't resist its effects. it's so good. i honestly don't know how i learned of andrew's music but i sure am glad i did.
I dont know how much these artists know how deep they touch lives.
Andrew Bird and Ben Folds. This is the greatest year of the tiny desk concert. Praise be NPR!
This was ethereal omg. The only Andrew Bird song I’ve been listening to non stop for 2 years was Left Handed Kisses and that was amazing but omg the rest of his work is heartstoppingly beautiful
I don't even need to do requests to NPR, they read my mind pretty well :D
I wish Andrew Bird and the band would concert in Europe. This decadent atmosphere, lively delicate acoustics and compositions are so moving ❤🌟🍀 Lucky you who can attend his performances 😊
I know it's not Europe-proper, but he's performing in London in mid-November.
andrew is certainly talented, but i love how the band comes together for all the vital moments in each tune. good job everyone involved!!
Press this concert on vinyl - I'll buy twelve! Bird's violon skills are off the wall - everyone else plays awesomelly!!!
You have a strange sense of humor.
@@slipintothebreaks I thought they were serious
The Bemfartskes are a musical clan.
All that talent and I'm most impressed by the whistling. I can whistle like a bird when I'm alone... If someone looks at me I can't even whistle...
Don't know why or how, but I ended up listening to this every single day.
Every evening I play this video while having my smoke before gaming hahaha glad someone else out there is using it every day
I love how every instrument / voice here has its very defined place
A whistling guitar player playing guitar on the violin with a stellar verbal lexicon in the form of folk music and indie rock is pure bliss=]. Hilley Crystal would be proud of the country bluegrass, gourmand, and blues representation=]
Couldn't love this anymore if I could love this and vibe out to it a bit. Maybe I comment times many seen this a lot going to revisit it 'really' !
This performance sounds better than the album. Captivating, honest, substantive. Each track moves with restless purpose like Mr Bird himself.
On this day I am the happiest I've been in forever. I didn't know Andrew Bird had a tiny desk concert. Thank you based NPR
Still listening to your music Andrew, in little old New Zealand. My toddler gets so excited when she hears you too.
Man! The comment section here is so enriching. To find so many Andew Bird new and old fans, who probably have no body in their close circles to share their joy of listening to his melodies. Like I went alone to his show, could not convince one friend to come with me. 😬
But the admiration his fan have for him is deep, almost as if of wanting to protect this kind of rich music and artistic exploration in the face of opposing economic incentives.
This is a breath of fresh air musically. Gorgeously unique ...carts me off on that magical journey. YOU ROCK ANDY BIRD. LEGEND !
This music has the ability to worm its way into the cells of your being to relentlessly transpose them into the perfectly tuned vibration. Yum.
This Tiny Desk is so damn good. Amazing performance, perfect mixing and miking. I play this almost every day.
The depth of sound this group manages with minimal/minimalist instrumentation is impressive.
Found his music last year. And I've been obsessed since then. I'm so glad I found him!!
oh my gosh the song Roma Fade gets me through the working day! thank you Anthropologie for putting this through your airwaves and thank you guys!
Saw him with Iron & Wine on Sunday. What a show. Two brilliant minds.
This is just TOO GOOD. He’s BING CHILLING so hard I’m jealous
I listen to this twice a week for years now. Much appreciated
Andrew Bird is the greatest local musican alive. His music sounds like undiscovered gems my neighbor I’ve never met could have made.
I will never get over this npr performance. Love how the bass, guitar, drums and violin complement each other so well...
I wish more musicians would make a break for the door, and escape the traditional studio manufactured recording.
I am constantly looking for a simple live, acoustic recording to listen to at home.
Agreed, the NPR versions in my opinion are better than the studio recordings.
steve ducell Jazz and Bossa Nova at the Jimboree (Sant Andreu Jazz quintet directed by Chamorro)
steve ducell also... the Scary Pockets are wonderful.
Go listen to Anaïs Mitchell then, all of her albums (sans Young Man in America, which is still really good but just doesn't fall into the same vibe) have that unfinished, recorded outside vibe and she's so underappreciated
Edit: she also made an appearance on Tiny Desk
I am at the exactly same vibe. Sounds like this versions are always better than the studio recorded ones
Andrew Bird is a national treasure. I love his sound. So uniquely him.
So love how he arranged the series and music to this beautiful done "Outside In" . Incredible artist. This man plays a violin with a Bass Alto bow string. I salivate. Genius. What he does with music. Watch the movie and listen to what he does. ❤J🥰
These are absolutely my 3 favorite tunes now. It's been years since I last had new songs taking over my head like this. Amazing!
First Andy Shauf, now Andrew Bird? NPR you are making my YEAR
Lol just stumbled upon your comment brodera. Can't agree more XD
Stumbled onto this today- WHAT A GEM!!!!!! Thanks Tiny Desk and you birds of a feather!
Essa música me faz muito feliz! Obrigada ❤
How does it grow lead me here! I love when RUclips sends down the music rabbit hole and I wind up in Wonderland.
Tiny desk is responsible for showing me some awesome music that I wouldn't have found any other way.
