Yes, very nice music. Still. And don`t forget I grew up with Herman Brood, Deep Purple, Earth Wind & Fire....I learnt Trumpet playing at the beginning of the 80`s. I love horns with a nice voice. Greetings from Hamburg, Germany.
oh my God this is perfect, when I was younger I went to France on a road trip and this is what my dad played in the car whilst we drove to the caravan park we were staying at. So many memories!
It’s now 2022…and I watch this video often. I love Beirut! Look at all of these beautiful high school band nerds (and I say that in the sweetest of ways as I too am a nerd) making some of the dearest heartfelt music your cochlear bones could digest. Watching Zach sing is like being in the presence of an angel.
Since I couldn't find em elsewhere, here's who is performing: Zach Condon - Lead Vocals/Trumpet Nick Petree - Percussion Ben Lanz - Keys/Trombone Perrin Cloutier - Accordion Kelly Pratt - French Horn/Trumpet Paul Collins - Bass
I’m from Brazil and really impressed by this beirut’s performance. I love their song, but live looks even better. Elephant Gun is their most famous song in Brazil. I missed it. Tiny Desk, Show!!!!
I've waited almost 10 years to consume this. Absolutely spectacular. The magic that captured me in 2006 is there in 2011 and again in 2022. Thank you Beirut in whatever incarnation you are in. Your music heals me with each passing year and I am grateful for you.
"I'm losing track of how many times I've seen a Tiny Desk and said, "This band/video is my new favorite thing." I read that comment on a different thread today. Honestly, I can't think of one Tiny Desk that I haven't enjoyed. It's such good way to discover new music. I'm a fan. Thanks, Bob and everyone else.
I so agree. Tiny Desk has a way of picking great artists and showcasing them in an extra-special way. My goal is to eventually comment on every Tiny Desk live video.
I love Beirut! My friend Joey passed away three years ago. Our favorite passed time was showing each other new bands to listened to. I just rediscovered this gem thanks to my suggestions and it makes me think of him so much.
This was something I mostly used to listen to while I was pregnant with my boy /girl twins, 5 years ago, and I would dance happily while holding my belly. Unfortunately, I lost the girl in late pregnancy, something I can hardly ever get over. But this music is still that little connection between the three of us, it just froze that times of togetherness for me. ❤🩹
The timbre of the french horn, flugelhorn, and trombone are absolute perfection. WHo needs trumpet ;) Sante Fe may be one of my favorites. Just drove through there 2 weeks ago on a cross country trip. Listening to Beirut while traversing the dessert and mountains was nothing less of magical.
I'm actually really impressed with their sound quality in the horns. Being able to play in great harmony softly to not overload the tiny room can be difficult. Especially when it comes to the trumpets higher notes and not having to bust your balls getting up there with a good bell of a sound.
One thing good about being older is that 2011 seems like yesterday. For me, I'm pretty comfortable including 2011 in "current music". :) I have definitely loved these guys for a minute, but perhaps it actually is more than that.
Been watching these videos all night. I found Beirut my freshman year of highschool. I stumbled upon someone's re-post, David Dean Burkhart's channel, and I had been in love ever since. Playing trumpet from middle school to highschool I have always been attracted to an orchestral type sound, especially music by Brian Wilson of the Beach Boys. I have found this band always makes me feel like there is more. More to this world than what my phone shows me. A call back to older times where you had to get out there to FIND the music! Forever in my heart and ears, thank you Beirut!
Watching this on 8/5/2020 after explosion in Beirut. So incredibly sad for those who lost their lives or were injured. However, I love this band tremendously, so it was nice that my searching for the city name returned one happy result.
I wish Beirut made an unplugged disc. I personally like it more than their studio version of these songs. They sound so classy, with these pear-shaped tones and the brass holding hands with Condon's outstanding voice yet never masking it. Gorgeous!
He has a flawless voice and he makes it look so effortless. Really masks how rare it is for a male singer to have a voice like this. And then you throw in the horns and the terrific songwriting? Amazing.
@@whoever_81 nobody has a flawless voice either thats whats beautiful in modern music its about the music not the voice like choirs where they perfect there voices. Modern mainstream music is about the cracks and flaws in the voice
I don't know that I've ever heard anything by Beirut but dang am I glad I stumbled across this. Y'all had my 3 & 1/2 year old dancing like a madman! Truly nothing short of absolutely enthralling. I'm a fan.
Their unique sound, especially his voice, and the clever lyrics, feel really pleasing or comforting to me. It's a certain mood - I guess emotional, sentimental, full but pretty content with teensy bit of the Ben Folds Five sound but guess that's the piano. I like that fun horn and accordion sound. This part gives me shivers: "Sound is the color I know, oh. Sound is what keeps me before your eyes. And sound of your breath in the cold. And oh, the sound will bring me home again." 👂🏿🎶🎵💬
I discovered Beirut through this video when it was first posted! Zach is so incredibly talented and Hadsel recently blew me away. Love coming back to them every so often.
Truly creative, original, imaginative, magical and exquisite music. Always makes me feel as though life is worth living when I listen to Beirut. And not much makes me feel like that.
Like these guys and their style a lot. Great musicians, solid little concert. Also glad to see they could get Art Garfunkel out of retirement to play the drums. Bravo.
I do agree that his voice is unparalleled. There are many great singers with lovely voices but none I like quite as much as his. When you love a band I would not consider it a silly opinion. Every band has value to someone. They happen to be my favorite too.
Still one of my fave tiny desk concert ever! Was once worked at a photo gallery and I always put Beirut on my daily playlist at the gallery for visitors to enjoy.
Just had the wonderful opportunity of visiting the lovely city of Santa Fe (however no more than a few hours on business). It's amazing to see such lovely architecture that matches the surrounding geography so perfectly; something that is often underappreciated. Beirut, thank you for joining me in my travels. Yes, I had this on repeat for those 3 hours : )
i think its absolutely amazing how he was just a normal dude from new mexico but created music that sounds so out of this country. If more modern day indie artists were influenced by world music their music would be amazing.
I discovered them in London, big gig along with Arcade Fire, they blew my mind and have been an important part of my life since then. Nothing like their music to cheer my soul up. Such a pity they barely show themselves live any more, I wish they could come back❤

Maybe I'm just old but I get annoyed with how the album versions sound for songs like east Harlem or a lot of current music.. This version is wonderful.. The quirkiness is there but understated. The richness of the brass I think is what I love about this. It just doesn't sound as good to me on the album. Just my opinion
+swish007 100% agree. This vid was the first i'd heard of the band, when I searched for album tracks I was a bit disappointed. I replay this version East Harlem all the time though, it's a quite beautiful piece of music
+James Crane Me too! Exactly my opinion. There's a track by Chris Bathgate on You Tube called "Everything", which is fantastic because it has a great session Violinist on it who makes it really sing. They don't have her on the CD and it suffers for that! Crazy decisions.
totally agree. I expect differences between live and recorded, but they knock it out of the park here, but the album is incredibly over engineered and insipid. love the band though. i found the same with my Jeremy Messersmith album i bought on the strength of his NPR tiny desk set
I've come across Beirut many times because I listen to a lot of similar music. Something about the way their songs are produced has never really drawn me to their albums, but this live performance totally changes the way I think about their music and has really peaked my interest.
This is magistral, Between magic and truth, this live is one of the best of the NPR Tiny Desk Concert and by far. One of the greatest. Sign my up Santa Fe.

So I text my son this weekend to tell him I'm on a Beirut binge and he beats me to the punch to tell me he's doing the same!
Unos putos genios bro
I can't get over how sincere he looks when he sings.
I love him!
he loves what he does.. how beautiful
Beirut makes me wax nostalgic for things I have never experienced. It's truly magical.
He swings his feet during the last song and it's the most adorable thing ever.

Beirut are the type of band you listen to while doing a roadtrip in Europe, perfect combination of sounds and vibes
That perfectly sums up my last 2 weeks in Europe. Beirut was my soundtrack

Just seeing this in 2020. Probably the oldest tiny desk I’ve seen on RUclips, but it’s definitely one of my favorite

Tiny Desk - high time to invite Beirut again :)
I would love to see them do a tiny desk with RipTide, Elephant Gun, Postcards from Italy and Gallipoli
Or just a rehash of their Soirée de Poche!
@@swilson4506 , I'll take off "Elephant Gun" and "Postcards from Italy" and put "Rhineland" and "Transatlantic"

Same here, dude! 😂

still same :(

Definitely time to get these guys back now that the sound engineers have immeasurably upped their game!

I don't normally leave comments on RUclips. .. but this.... This is something special. These guys got it.
I'm commenting to make you deliberately uncomfortable, and hopefully you'll respond to this, hopefully creating a cycle of discomfort for you.
How have I never heard of these guys. They are incredible and just shot to the top of my favorite bands list.

it's a rotary trumpet, not a flugel! its tone is somewhere in the direction of flugel tone though
I'm actually really impressed with their sound quality in the horns. Being able to play in great harmony softly to not overload the tiny room can be difficult. Especially when it comes to the trumpets higher notes and not having to bust your balls getting up there with a good bell of a sound.
I know the dude on trumpet/french horn that isn't Zach is absolutely AMAZING. I've seen them live three times and he absolutely kills it.
Taylor Craig do you know what's his name? :)
Lucía Cobain Kelly Pratt, dude slays
They all met in a conservatory, so not shocking they're all extremely well trained classical musicians.
The musicianship is really quite impressive. They had very thoughtful instrumentation in that performance.
One thing good about being older is that 2011 seems like yesterday. For me, I'm pretty comfortable including 2011 in "current music". :) I have definitely loved these guys for a minute, but perhaps it actually is more than that.

Just found out about this band yesterday, falling in love with their music .
Drummers vibes are something we could all aspire to
