alt-J: Tiny Desk Concert

- Bob Boilen | April 24, 2017 - As the primary booker of the Tiny Desk Concerts, I have this self-imposed rule: No artist can come back for a second visit unless there's something wholly different about what they're doing. The first time alt-J played the Tiny Desk, in 2012, they came as a four-piece; electric guitar, bass, keyboards and drums. They were a pretty new band, their album had been out a few months and they were playing in clubs for a couple hundred people, not much more.
In the five years since the band visited it has found quite a few new fans. When I heard cuts from the newest album Relaxer a few months ago I flipped and tried to think of a way to bring them back. So I wrote them, saying I'd love to have them again but that it would have to be wholly, out-of-the-box different. I told them I'd hire a brass band, an African kora player if need be, a string section... They took up the challenge. They told me to find a cellist and two violinists.
I wrote to my friend Carol Anne Bosco, a cellist, who turned out to be a huge fan of the band and helped find two violinists for the performance. About four days before the performance the band sent the string parts, written by their friend Will Gardner.
On Monday morning, the English band met the American string players and they all gathered behind my desk. As they worked their way through a first pass at "Three Worn Words," I noticed them and relieved - alt-J had actually never heard the string arrangements, this was the first time. They sounded beautiful. By noon, NPR employees and friends gathered around my desk to witness this astonishing concert from alt-J, including two new songs and two old favorites. Magic.

What's Up?
Some of us just come here for the music. We get enough politics on other sites. I stopped listening to Radio 6 in the UK because of DJs with good musical taste and terrible political preferences they couldn't stop sharing. Ruined it for me.
I always thought that "that" voice belonged to the moustached guy
Which, the Elmer Fudd voice?
The one that actually belonged to the blond guy
well, you weren't wrong, he has a moustache as well ;)
omg me too I'm so confussed right now
ignorant :(
Those voices did NOT belong to the people I thought they did 😂
yah
got me LOLing
you are not alone. i saw the blonde dude singing and i was blown away
hahahahha exactly
Yeah You tube keeps doing this to me
I love alt-J, though whenever I see Gus, I see a man wearing those glasses with fake eyebrows, nose and moustache attached.
Oh man, I can't unsee.
I almost spit what I was drinking hahahahahahaha
I can't not see this and I hate you for this....
I thought there was something about his face that was really familiar
that makes this tiny desk, 10x better at least. thank you
didn't know these songs can be performed live so perfectly.
Me too..I'm surprised.
I've been to their concert tour last Friday and they are absolutely incredible in live performance.
Truuuue
well if each member of the band only has to play 3 notes over and over again, not too challenging!
Taro is such a work of art. They're extremely talented.
It's nuts how amazing their drummer is. He's only got a bass, snare, and an egg shaker.
and hes practically deaf
Brandon Taylor 🙄🙄🙄
Don't forget the cowbell
Can you name a better drummer from this decade and genre? I love it
@@jennaknight1012 Danny Carey
The 15:00 failed "Ready.... *spronk* Oops... hey Taro!" gets me every time! Joe's proceeding rouge is a thing of beauty! :D!
Dude, that is my favorite. Thats art. The "flaw" is the most beautiful part.
He was so embarrassed but I honestly loved it. So authentic, and it worked. It was beautiful
@@102sydney haha absolutely. I love the way they both keep their heads down while laughing to themselves!
It’s high time for a new alt j tiny desk
That "hipster John Oliver" cosplay is awesome.

John Oliver is a hipster

You always close an Alt-J concert with Taro - there's no other way
and you always miss the brige at the end Joe, there's no other way
Jose Triana last night at their concert at the O2 they played taro halfway through and then finished with fitzpleasure which actually fitted quite well too!
One of my favorite parts. "Whoops" lol
I looooove that little mistake XD
Is this a recurring thing?
Where are the rice cakes at?
They must have put them in their butt.
so I knew nothing of the rice cake business. Googled it. JESUS, it's a 10M views video by now... and it's pretty cool :)

David Carr where did you hear this?
This is one of the few bands that every time I listen to them, it's like the first time hearing music for the first time.
To me it feels like the first time hearing music for the second time.
zombievey wow you put this in words better than I could in my head lol
Wow!!!! Perfect way to say it!! 100%
How high were you when you wrote this? What, about 5'6", 5'7"?
I feel this 100000%
I was expected the voice from glasses guy but blondy beardy surprised.

The audio engineering is made with love.
I have to say the strings add a beautifully tangible fullness.
sashafierce1011 I’m glad you said so. I wasn’t feeling it, but when I read your comment I decided to actually break out the good headphones and turn up the volume. Glad you swayed me to return.
@@estevanphillips6889 beautiful through the headphones. Especially if you're only listening on a phone
i’m sad they did two violins and a cello and not a violin, viola, and cello. the viola would’ve brought some gorgeous depth to the middle voice. more balanced.
The cello girl smiling is the little fairy that balances this group out
I'm pretty sure she's crushing over Joe Newman lol (I think)
I fucking love when the artists smile while they are performing, that show that they love what they are doing
Honestly, I've listened to EVERYTHING alt-j has put out, and there hasn't been ONE song that I haven't fallen in love with. 10/10 band, would recommend.
agreed!
Mia Grace some of the stuff on relaxer just goes over my head. I‘m simply not smart enough for it. Most of reduxer also isn’t for me but all in all I have to agree with you.
@@robertschneider8808 reduxer sucks, relaxer is great except for last year
Relaxer was a bit of a let down for me, it seemed a bit rushed and thin compared to the first two albums. Although they are hard to top anyway, I always come back to them
Mia Grace thanks!!
Dude, "3WW" was awesome, but In cold blood, just blew my mind.
this album's gonna be so goooooooood
pleader is a good one too. The only song I found hard to like was hit me like that snare..sounds like raging hormonal teens playing music for the first time after getting high.. I was just not feeling that vibe..lol
Davo Rebo Kinda know what you feel about It. Yeah, probably that song is not their best, but we have very good ones in the new album.
hit me like a snare has a violent femmes feel to it I'd say. and the violent femmes are not for everyone... I love them.
yaaaassss bro
That version of Taro is bitchin! Sounds awesome with the strings.
miss the duct tape tho
hahaha true.
They seriously should record an entire album like this, strings and all
14:42 The moment of pure feelings. And then 20 sec later a small mistake causing big smiles on everyones faces
I'M SO HAPPY THANK YOU ALT J THANK YOU TINY DESK PEOPLE
I am not sure they like being called like this ;)
lol, tiny desk-people :D, sounds like something from Rick and Morty
ISeeFlashingLights Thank you tiny desk elves!
ISeeFlashingLights you forgot to thank kassem g
This was wonderful to listen through. When they said they were going to play a song from their first album and said "Taro," I couldn't remember which one it was. Then they started playing it and I was immediately whisked back to the Summer of 2013 and filled with a million memories. Losing my job, almost killing myself, calling my ex in tears who came to help me and he hugged and then kissed me and said, "I don't want a relationship," moving into a dirty apartment with a wonderful lady where we never turned on the AC and always had the windows open to the almost dirty kind of downtown area. 85 degrees at home always. Working a bunch of different oddball jobs on campus. Taking calculus based physics. Ex saying he adored me, then saying we have to stop because he's going on a date, coming back and saying he didn't realize how much he cared for me and how wonderful I was. Going over to his place, him hiding me from his roommates at first. Me becoming obsessed with cleaning and plants as a form of control and fostering growth in something else when I couldn't foster it in myself. Getting into yoga, always showing up to class smelling of bleach after scrubbing my bathroom for two hours and with dirt under my fingernails from taking care of my plants. As soon as they started playing Taro when I listened through today, I fell to my knees and started ugly crying. Crazy what music can do to you.
Kind of a strange tmi story, but wanted to share it. Now I work a stable corporate job, live in a nice apartment, have a normal boyfriend, live a simple normal life. Interesting to think back on the more strange times and realize, "I lived that."
I know that you posted this story a while ago but I just want to thank you for doing so.
For some reason your story resonated with me. I'm glad things are better for you now.
As am I..... again thanks for sharing this piece of your life with usl
Such a touching story showing what music can do. Thanks so much for sharing it!
It's been a year since you wrote that comment, we don't know each other, we live in completely opposite countries (Venezuela says hi); nevertheless, I feel strongly related to your personal story. I am myself going through some stuff, and it's always reassuring to find people being this vulnerable and open to show others that you can keep moving forward, that you can come out successful at the end. Hope you're doing well, and hope to, one day, look back the same way as you and say "I lived that, came out victorious". Good vibes to you, bless!
Thats is the power of music, it can connect all of us.
The cellist is so beautiful, and I love that she is really vibing in Taro.
I agree, there's a few looks with a smile that just subtly convey how awesome the experience is, she recognized it.
15:02 he's like oops and then gets super blushed , my favorite part haha
What do they say?
@@gazthebomb "hey, Taro!", just like in the song itself

I started listening to Alt-J again, don't know why ever stopped. When they played Taro a rush of memories came back to me the minute I heard the guitar. What a beautiful song with so many happy beautiful memories attached. Back then, the world for me seemed so much more vibrant and colourful. As I've grown up, the colour drains each year. Listening to this song brings some of the colour back.
I think their drummer is very talented
He is also 80% deaf
Really!? I always though he was exceptional and now I read this!
He is precise as fuck if nothing else
funny - I was just watching "in cold blood" thinking "wow, his rhythm is all over the place. I wonder if this song is going to fly apart." But they kept it together. Love this concert.
1000% concur
this drummer is the coolest guy i´ve seen in all my life
After being in love with this band since 2012, I'm FINALLY seeing them live in a few months 😭😭😭
same! :) :)
I was so bummed that they canceled their tour stop in Milwaukee, WI due to logistical issues, but decided at the last minute to play an acoustic set at a very small venue this Friday, March 18th for $35, I couldn't be happier!
I’m also seeing them this summer on Tbilisi Open Air 2022 and they’re headlining 🥺 I’m at my happiest rn
Yo me toooo, I've loved them for so long and I get to see them September
!!how was it????pls let us know ( :
I love these guys. In all honesty, they should do more with the strings section. It adds so much depth to their songs.
The string trio should've said "Hi" during the "Girls from the pool say hi" part
Yeah that really triggered me
i think one of them is a guy with fabio hair
Or just 2 of them.
@ulises albarran Or the previous 17 minutes. He looks exactly like a man with long hair to me, but then I always was good at differentiating between men and women just by looking.

Taro has been one of my favorite songs for years. When I'm bored at work, I'll write out the lyrics from memory, it's so beautiful. This is the first time I've seen it live like this though!
On of the best sets ever
The first time Alt-J was on Tiny desk I think was a better set quite honestly
The outro to Taro played with violins is incredible.
Never heard a better drummer
This is demanding music for being so emotional. I mean, this is really stimulating on at least 3 different levels of input. Delicious. Unbelievable.
FINALLY A LIVE VERSION OF WARM FOOTHILLS ! Also Thom's drumming man .. insane!
Dang I've watched this so many times .2023 .just obsessed.

Taro is the song that got me in to Alt J. I’m surprised how good they sound live I’ve gotta see them in concert.
J'ai pleuré instantanément en écoutant Taro. C'est magnifiquement chanté, le doux du ton tranchant avec la dureté des paroles.
Toutes mes félicitations Alt-J, vous êtes géniaux.
I just noticed Joe's "High Anxiety/ Stranger Things" T-shirt !
Riju Shrestha also it's Merc for the solo album of Thom
Ibis Marquez I think they understood that
As if I wasn't already completely in love with Joe Newman, seeing him blush after missing a note near the end of Taro just melted my whole entire heart.
Admittedly, of the dozens of time I’ve visited this incredible little concert, I’ve never taken the time to read through he description. I’m so glad I did. The strings were so utterly enjoyable and I’ve often wondered how this magic came to be. The adoration and enthusiasm of the cellist is a thing to behold. I share the stars in her eyes.
Thank you for the peek behind the curtain. 💕

Just seeing this for the first time and it makes me wonder why tiny desk hasn’t brought Glass Animals on??

I'd love that
I NEED THIS ASAP!!!
They're terrible live
Saw Alt J in Bristol in about 2013 ish I think. Friend of mine got an EP with Fitzpleasure on, which we wore out. So we booked the gig, about 150 capacity, and then before the date came round they sort of took off and the gig got postponed a few times. Eventually they got to the gig, and it was obviously too small for them but we appreciated they honored it.
They turned up, played the album perfectly plus one additional song which was a Kylie Minogue cover I think. Everyone was impressed by the quality, but a huge lack of stage presence, and perhaps appreciation for everyone there who were among the first to support them.
Still, amazing creativity, authenticity and quality music.
i've been listening to alt j for like five years now and this is by far the best live performance i've ever seen
This version of Warm Foothills sounds like it was arranged by Andrew Bird and I love it.
warm foothills cleans my soul
wow ... it's true , mine too ... squeeekey Kuh-leeen.
I love this so much. Alt J has been my favorite band for a decade. Their music always calms my crazy, anxious self down.
This intro song...I keep wanting to revisit. It's intoxicating, Relaxer indeed. I love Alt-J. These guys are so good live. The cellist seemed to really dig the mood of the song as it developed too, that is fun to watch, so chill.
I love the Tiny Desk Concerts! They are so raw. You really get to hear their true unfiltered musicianship. alt-j nailed it!
When his face turns red, i smiled :)
I never would expected the blond guy was the voice :O
I just realized after the 100th time watching this all the way through that Joe is wearing a "High anxiety" t-shirt, which is the name of Thoms solo album
