- This performance was recorded on Feb. 28, 2020. We will continue releasing Tiny Desk videos of shows that had already been taped. In light of current events, NPR is postponing new live tapings of Tiny Desk Concerts. In the meantime, check out Tiny Desk (home) concerts! They’re recorded by the artists in their home. It’s the same spirit - stripped-down sets, an intimate setting - just a different space.

April 6, 2020 | Josh Rogosin -- The Lumineers showed up at the Tiny Desk with family, friends and crew who travel with the tight-knit touring band. One special guest in particular was Lenny, the toddler son of lead singer Wes Schultz. As soon as Bob Boilen met Lenny, Bob searched for every toy he could find on the shelves behind his desk to entertain the restless tyke.
I've always been struck by how this band can make a crowd of 6,000 fans feel like an intimate jam session. Halfway through The Lumineers' set at the Newport Folk Festival in 2013, the entire band moved to the very back of the enormous crowd. I remember marveling that the worst spot in the field miraculously became the best.
Much of The Lumineers' Tiny Desk comes from the band's third LP, III, which tells a story of addiction in three acts. They began with gut-wrenching renditions of "Gloria" and "Leader Of The Landslide"(accompanied by a cassette recording of crickets made on iPhones and dubbed to play on a boombox). The third track is also from III, but was an assignment from director M. Night Shyamalan. He tasked Schultz and his suspender-clad writing partner, Jeremiah Fraites, with composing a song for the end credits of a film. "Jer and I worked really hard on that, and then he didn't need it," Schultz confessed. The result is the stark and haunting "Salt And The Sea,"which strikes a different chord than any other song they've written.
It wouldn't be a Lumineers show without a foot-stompin' sing-along to end the set, which came with their crowd-pleasing hit "Stubborn Love". Stelth Ulvang demonstrated a level of barefoot acrobatics unrivaled at the desk thus far, not an easy feat (or should I say, feet). Right after the Tiny Desk concert, the band and entourage rushed off to play a little club in town called the Capital One Arena for another intimate show in front of 20,000 fans.

My dad have been in the music industry for well over 40 years and heard everything. When I discovered the Lumineers, I watched the entire concept-album of the Ballad of Cleopatra. Then I called my dad and said, "You need to see this." He went in and we watched the entire thing. My dad isn't very emotional, he's 70 now, and he was taught to hold it all inside. He smiled, he cried, he laughed, and in the end, he didn't had to told me this was the most moving thing he had ever hear or seen. I just knew. There are many bands in this world - a lot are better on paper, have better equipment, and play in big stadiums, in front of bigger audiences, and rack up hit after hit. But the Lumineers are special. Not because they're virtuosos nor because their songs speak for our generation, not because they are sexy or weird or cool. The Lumineers are legendary because their music, quite simply, sounds like life.

I saw them open for u2 in 2017. They were amazing.

"So what do you play in the Lumineers?"
"Oh, I play the violin, the right side of the piano, and a 30 year old tape player."
And don't forget that she sings at the same time too 😅

Probably not a coincidence, since the band has talked about how processing the overdose death of the drummer's older brother (and singer's best friend) was a source of inspiration for some of their early music
It genuinely does!
One of those bands that sound exactly the same live as they do on the record- SO GOOD
Saw them at Shaky Knees Festival a few weeks ago and 100% agree. Actually they sound better love. Similar to Pink Floyd. Just plain better live.

In 2012, my friend gave me an extra ticket to see Brandi Carlile in our little resort town of 1000 people in northern WI. He told me he was going so he could see the opener, a band I've never heard of called The Lumineers. I swear my friend and I were the youngest people in the audience but once The Lumineers came out they had the whole audience singing, even at one point with a three-part harmony. After the show, they were standing around outside the venue awkwardly so my friend and I bought their CD and got it signed by them. I ripped that CD straight to my MP3 player and listened to it that summer on repeat while biking to my job washing dishes at a restaurant. I don't listen to them as much as I used to but that first album always brings me back.
TheWhyer I love this story, thanks for sharing!
Brandi Carlile and the Lumineers in one show sounds about as close to heaven as I’ll ever get.

If this music had a smell it would be ginger root and healthy soil. And I love it
What does a healthy soul smell like?

One of the most wholesome bands out there. They make sure EVERYONE gets to hear them and participate in their concerts, too. Very down to earth
I'd be honored if some Lumineers & Tiny Desk fans who appreciate the 90s acoustic era would take a listen to my piano & vocal performances of LONG DECEMBER by the Counting Crows, SHE'S A BRICK by Ben Folds Five, and Mmm Mmm Mmm by the CRASH TEST DUMMIES on my YT channel in tribute to 3 great mid/late 90s standards. Live acoustic with no autotune or digital editing. Peace and everybody stay safe.
Leaders of the landslide has to be the best song on the album for me. It brings back alot of pain for me but at the same time it helps me heal.
I feel the same way. It's all about the breaking down of one's childish perspective, realizing the truth. It's a brilliant song.
The salt and the sea is such an intense song and this really did it justice. Absolutely transcendent.

4:33 Thank you for Leader of the landslide. When the song was released I couldn't stop listening to it and I was like "THEY GET IT". I cried a lot. It was cathartic. I think something changed for me. I needed it. Thank you.
The Salt and The Sea may well be the pinnacle of their writing achievements. It is so haunting, so lyrically meaningful and so beautifully executed that I am moved to tears.
I got to say the way it sounds in this version is amazing! That bass!

Truly such a profound and beautiful song. It came to me when I needed it most, no other song on earth could have helped me the way this one did.
Never heard of the Lumineers before, but i kept on listening as i game and this song is absolutely top notch. definitely listening to it again once it finishes
It's amazing! It's so exquisitely beautiful and even painful to listen to. I love it. I feel like I can connect with it in such a deep way.
Stubborn love has so many great quotes
It's better to feel pain than nothing at all❤
@Jieming Liu , Which was popularized by Elie Weisel and dates back to 1866.
I'm so happy Stubborn Love is here. One of their best and first work, I think. It speaks a lot of who they are as a band. Lovely lyrics
One of my favourites
It's so weird growing up with Jeremy and having his mom as my teacher and seeing him on tv and npr and things like this. Kids got such a kind soul and definitely didn't have it easy growing up. So proud to see where he is in life now
The Lumineers is my favorite band. I was absolutely devastated when I couldn’t go see them in DC last month. Their last album was a masterpiece and I wanted to sit in the crowd and cry while I sang the songs. But none of my friends listen to them ): I struggle with depression & anxiety and listening to them pulls me out of whatever pit I’m in. This is the next best thing
I saw them live in Lisbon last year, flowers on my hair and all. I can easily say it was one of the best nights of my life. I mistakenly bought a seated place, but their energy made me stand up and jump around the entire concert, cry and hug strangers. I truly hope you get to see them in the future. Hang in there
You have a friend in all of us , stay strong.
Music will find you when you need it most. I try to stay connected even in these isolate times. Hope that one day you can sit in that crowd and cry those tears. Until then play the music loud.
Sadly same. I was going to go see them at Lollapalooza in Argentina but it got canceled due to the pandemic :(
Kiara Moten I was planning to see them as well!! This video makes me a little less sad
I am always enamored by the technical aspect of Tiny Desk. (This version is no different.)
I’m astounded by the separation and tonal quality of the mics for the vocals and instruments. Total props to the engineers and crew!
You guys are amazing!
Loved this episode as well! Thanks Tiny Desk, NPR.
Supercardoids for the win!
@@burkathon are you sure those are hyper cardiod? They look like shotguns to me... But hyper cardiod would explain getting the crowd singing...
Chris Ferris good point the shotguns are used for some distance micing with some separation. The audience is picked up by 2 schoeps omnidirectional mics hanging above the corner of the cubicle facing the band (like a 9 foot tall audience member).

There's something special in The Lumineers. I love how they change tempos and directions. They are not your average cookie cutter band. They take risks and it always pays off.
