Bob Boilen | April 7, 2017 - Last May, Tash Sultana posted a self-made video, just her in her living room with guitar, laptop and a great song called "Jungle." Within five days it had drawn a million views.
This 21-year-old Maltese-Australian got a guitar from her grandfather when she was three, she says, and has played it every day since. It's astonishing to watch Sultana's fluidity on her instrument, like a natural extension of her body. (She also plays bass, saxophone, trumpet, flute and more, but kept it "simple" at the Tiny Desk.) I thought I had a lot of energy - watching her bounce from guitar to drum machine to two separate microphones - and then hopping barefoot from looping pedal to effect pedal as she builds her songs was exhilarating and exhausting. There's more here than an exercise in virtuosity, her music is filled with adventure and ambition. These songs are rapturous and resonant.
Tash has just finished a month-long, sold-out U.S. tour.
The EP Notion is available now.

I know I am late to the party finding your genius…73 years old and just found you, Tasha. To say your music is transcending is inadequate. To watch you perform, to see your unadulterated pure joy, it must be what heaven is like. Thank you for opening a small window into your world. Please don’t change.

Applaud with all fours.
She used to play on the streets of Melbourne a few years ago when only a handful of people knew about her. The first time i have heard her play "Notion" and i literally saw crowds of people getting around and staring in silence, crossing the streets and getting off trams to stop and listen. People looking at each other in disbelief. i got to work late to stop and listen. I can only describe the experience of stumbling across such an amazing experience as meeting God's particles floating through space. Unreal
Me: Could you give me the deepest comment you have ?
Also Me: No that deep , but i like it though .
Awwwww, Nick, feel ya, ey!?! Amazing. Thank you for sharing! xoxo from Germany.
Bro. While I was watching this I was literally imagining interdimensional beings cruising through the universe at light speed and time traveling lol
oh man! I wished I saw her busking before she blew up! It sounds like it was a phenomenal performance. Also out of curiosity which street did she usually busk on?
Nick - Lucky you were at the right place right time to see Tash busking. These rare moments of chance encounters help define and give purpose to our lives. As unexpected and as wonderful to witness raw talent. I barely have the coordination to bash two rocks together in rhythm.
I can’t lie, despite “the best” being entirely subjective, I will say this is my personal favourite Tiny Desk ever; even to this day after 5 years. This introduction to Tash changed my life so many years ago, and after experiencing them three times in three different countries, I can’t deny, they are the best live act I have ever seen. They have done so much for me which they will never know but I felt compelled to put it into words and share it in the hopes there may be others who feel similar. We are utterly blessed to have lived in the same time as Tash Sultana. As they have said; “If I'm in a good headspace, then it doesn't matter which direction things go.”
I just saw them live in Hollywood for the first time. It was amazing. Hands down the best musical, possibly the best experience I ever had in my entire life. Tash Sultana came out and I immediately started to cry. And I was like what’s up with that? And then I just cried the entire time. It was like I cried for every time I couldn’t and for every time I couldn’t feel or wouldn’t let myself.
I only discovered Tash a few days ago, thanks to discovery weekly list on Spotify and I'm totally obsessed. I've listened to only her music for the last few days and cannot understand how her music isn't being played everywhere right now. This is what we need...at least my soul does.
I'm 6 minutes into this video. I was watching Pigeon Pit's performance, and this came on after. I've never heard Tash Sultana's music before, but my entire body is covered in goosebumps since hearing the first note. I can't wait to hear more.
Amen 🙌

There is something so honest about her. She doesn’t care how her movements may make her look, she is unapologetically her. And that’s beautiful, just like her music.
Well said!
Her movements and her genuine nature constantly makes me smile...I love that about her..and because she is so amazingly talented..she never has to apologize for being who she is...but that is a message to us all...be unapologetic about who you are..be bold and live your truth!!!

@@adamparker7769 yes thankfully Tash was able to come out of it a whole person and share this amazing energy with the world. Life can be funny like that.
You can. My advice would be to make sure that you are breathing correctly. The Postural Restoration Institute can assess your breathing and teach you what you have to do in order to breath correctly. This may or may not be what you need. Good luck, Kevin.
She is music in human form.
She?
I saw her live in Cape Town, South Africa at a festival called Rocking The Daisies. After that festival I fell into a deep depression and it's only now, 3 years later that I can listen to her again without being triggered. She holds a special space in my heart and so does her music.

There’s something so inspiring about seeing someone do something you know they were destined for. Not enough people seek out their passions and engage in what moves them down to their soul
As someone who has been told that of "been destined for" many times (painting) I can assure no one is destined for anything. It's about allowing yourself to try with passion and technique comes after practise frecuently

I’ve shown this performance to friends that only listen to one genre in particular and they absolutely fell in love.. can’t deny greatness.
Tash is truly gifted and insanely talented. This is the kind of rare artist that blesses the world like once every century 🙏
Whatever the hell Tiny Desk uses to capture the audio for these performances is bloody amazing.
Yeah, I've watched a ton of her performances and this has the absolute best mixing
@Josh Rogosin, well done!
Probably they just get the master recording from the mics/amps running through a computer before being. All electric instruments have input > output w/ simultaneous ability to capture. Each instrument is captured seperately and I'm sure someone in production gets the levels of everything right or just the same as they use at the location. Applause is probably just picked up from mic. Thats my guess Anyway. It's either that or those big mic drop down things you see on movie sets.
Woah and when the vocals come in I was like best ever
yeah insane! you should also listen to COLORS SHOW recordings - all the songs sound so good
I like how she apologizes for us "having to hear this song all the time" then proceeds to play a masterpiece that tears my soul to pieces then carefully and at the same time beautifully sews it all back together. she is so fucking amazing to me
Literally teared up just from the instrumentals on that 2nd song. I felt it and she didn't even have to speak.
She is saying she apologizes to the person she was having difficulties with when she wrote this song. I think she is saying sorry that you have to keep hearing this song and be reminded of our hard times...
I teared up a bit at the accuracy of this comment ❤

I'm so glad modern media platforms are allowing these independent, talented artists. I've met a few of these types in my lifetime in music and they either don't do well in bands or they just end up limiting their creativity in traditional band environments. I'm glad artists like these are finally getting the outlet they deserve.

Sounds wonderful! That's also on the top of my bucket list, but with Nepal instead of Peru. Someday I want to take the Inca trail as well, but Nepal is top priority.
Hope you will have many more magical moments like that 💜
that sound like something i would enjoy
Freaking art. When passion moves you, respect
Tash's energy and vigor on stage give me Janis Joplin vibes.
So talented & original.
I need to find something that does for me what playing music does for her
Soso Di the meaning of life!

What bout some dope dope? Inspiring and chilling, i d say, it s making wide upstairs the neck

This girl is an absolute trip! Who can help but get totally lost in her talent! She is phenomenal! Her music is not a song, its a freaking experience!
Was sitting in a bar last week listening to the bartender's playlist and heard about 17 seconds of a song before I Shazammed it ... Two songs later, another 15 second Shazamm. Both Tash. ... And here I am vibing to the best Tiny Desk concert I've ever bloody heard. What a staggering talent.
Notion: by Tash Sultana
I hear the birds
When they're singing
I hear the sirens when they're ringing
But I can't take my mind off of you
A thousand words, pouring out
The distance of over there
Is moving on and out
You said it, you said it'd be alright
How 'bout these notions
Hmm, they're deep as ocean
Calling out my name
Screaming out in vain
Singing hallelujah
Tell your mother, she don't understand
Tell your father, he's not listening
Why don't you tear my heart
The chain is made of string
I roll the dice
You seal the deal
That don't matter
'Cause this pain will heal
I will follow you
Into the dark
How 'bout these notions
Hmm, they're deep as ocean
Calling out my name
Screaming out in vain
Singing hallelujah
These notions
Hmm, they're deep as ocean
Calling out my name
Screaming out in vain
Singing hallelujah
Singing hallelujah to you
Calling out my name
I'm in the deep end, ocean
Calling out my name
Singing hallelujah to you
I don't think your allowed to have this much talent.
mart10 agreed, it needs to be shared around.
Shhhhh, we don't want "Them" to take her too. 😖
😂😂😂😂
Oh dude is not talent, just practice and want to do something
I know!!
I'm so jealous!
One of, if not the best, Tiny Desk Concerts of all time.
After Mac's, this one definately 2nd
@@willemvanoverdijk5260 I was finna say that😂
It goes Tash tiny desk, T-Pains, Macklemore's, then Mac Miller's
@@willemvanoverdijk5260 wait what? She's posessed by music, Mac looked bored.
I love her so much... so much emotion in every sound she makes from vocals to instruments...a true musician right here.
