Man this group has sounded amazing since the beginning... Ten years later and they are still going strong, finally won their first Grammy award. I hope Punch Brothers will be just as strong for another 10 years!
best SA song ever written... Teacher hits on young man... won't put on his corsage because others would see the situation is shameful... young man doesn't understand for the rest of his life and ends up trying to end himself to get her back.
I just watched this video again after a gap of several months. The beauty and perfection of it still takes my breath away. It's quite simply the most perfect performance of one of the loveliest songs I've ever heard. I am eternally grateful to Chris and the Punch Brothers for giving me so much joy. Thank you.
Just saw them last night, and unfortunately, Critter was so sick he couldn't perform, but they were still utterly phenomenal. I was honored to meet them and let them know how much I appreciate their work.
The best musicians can play slowly. It's interesting that everyone becomes so obsessed with learning to play as absolutely fast as they can, but the very best bands, in my opinion, can play slowly like this and show restraint. These guys are swelling with emotion and barely moving in this construct they've created. It's beautiful to watch.
This is my favorite version of HtGaWFtG. Wow ! Chris has never sounded better and these guys are tight. I wish I could buy this performance in mp3 format.!!!
I know you don't smoke weed, I know this; but I'm gonna get you high today, 'cause it's Friday; you ain't got no job... and you ain't got shit to do. Man, ain't nothing wrong with smoking weed! Weed is from the earth. God put this here for me and you. Take advantage. Take advantage.
@davidl1017 as SnarkAttack12 said, the one he's using in this video is a '24 Gibson F-5 signed by Loyd Loar that he bought off of somebody who found it in an attic or something. It hadn't been played for about 80 years before he bought it. On older performances and recordings, however, he played a Dudenbostel #5 mandolin. Both amazing sounding instruments; both insanely expensive.
Musically speaking, Chris Thile is probably the best mandolin player and deserves respect from more than he gets. I think if he had the right publicity (and lots of it) he could give acoustic music a new face ... not that of a toothless, old man.
I don't know much about country/blue grass music. I am curious if there is a tradition in the lead singer and banjo player wearing suits and the others in the band wearing shirts and ties without jackets? Also, when the double bass player and banjo player adjust their strings is it because of tuning or are they after another tone?
@nowyouknow07 I can agree that they are more impressive musically than Nickel Creek. Each of them is a world class musician and have incredible soloisitc skills.
No such clothing tradtions exist. It's probably more about comfort or style. Most likely the musicians are just tuning. Some are more picky about being in tune and some have instruments that lose their tuning easily, so they have to adjust the tuning frequently. They do it for your listening pleasure and to assure themselves it is right:) Joni Mitchell, among others, often would retune her guitar to get the tone right for a particular song she had written.
What I'd give for an MP3 of this performance. The best rendition of "How to Grow a Woman" I've ever heard from them.
No way! I was at this concert when I was a kid! This is the first time I heard their music and I've been in love ever since.

This is so perfect it makes the hairs stand up at the back of my neck. Thank you Punch Brothers for bringing such exquisite joy :)

This is very possibly my favourite song of all time and certainly the best version of it I have seen. I am in awe of this incredible band.
This song makes me smile instantly. Just hauntingly beautiful and it seems to follow me around for DAYS after i hear it!

Beautiful writing and phrasing in this song. What a really tight band.
Noam brings so much, so subtly, to this song.
Lots of PHC listeners here. If you're locals (Twin Cities folks), check it out....they're coming to the Cedar on March 1.
this extracts the very essence of sheer wisdom and desire - an ethereal manifestation. goooood gawd, fabulous!!! grow me.

this song makes me cry. the melody is beautiful beyond compare and the lyrics. they really get my heart breaking.
There have been some incredibly gifted bluegrass musicians over the years but nobody can touch Chris Thile. Period.
My heart bleeds with pain every time I hear this song. Love It!
Pure Genius. They all deserve a MacArthur.
Thile already has one, as you might know.
Song written by Tom Brosseau.
@mongreltiger His voice is absolutely amazing here. Goddamn can he sing! Love the vocal improvisation.
Real musicians are able to play at softer dynamics. Make music great again... and America while at it.
I agree. Seeing them live is addictive.
Holy $hyte, that's a great recording of that song. Better than the studio/CD version, I think. Thile & Company ate a lot of Wheaties before this one.
ohh yeah baby. the best quality video of this song yet.
much appreciated.
I NEED to see them live at some point. Man, I swear... favourite band, hands down. Chris Thilé is unbelievably good.
His voice is so angelic and pure
BEST ONE i'VE HEARD YET!
HEARD THEM IN OWENSBORO 2012 ROMP.
This is my favorite version of HtGaWFtG. Wow ! Chris has never sounded better and these guys are tight. I wish I could buy this performance in mp3 format.!!!

Holy Shit. Well I'm awfully glad I stumbled upon this!
4:32 WUUUUUT

Underrated harmonies.

@spidermonkeysoup Please tell me you saw them last night? Friday, Sept. 10 at UT Austin. AMAZING!!!
I TOTALLY agree :)
@DrillRaptor I saw them! :D They were amazing!

Perhaps the quality? But even that didn't truly affect the sound.
@Pr0fess0r582 nickel creek had some catchy-ass songs but punch brothers is more impressive musically. IMHO.
@mongreltiger There are websites for that
I have to get my daily fix of this song or I just don't feel right
Where oh where can I download this glorious song?
still no Nickel Creek... :(
then we aren't listening to the same songs.
Ha! Yeah, I guess so.
Even if he did manage to grow a woman from the ground he'd still probably have a dysfunctional relationship with her.
Bitter much?
flvto.com dude.
EVER SONG IS THE SAME. -.-
Talented, but not my kind of music, slow, draggy-ass music...
perfection.
