I am so in love with Chris Thile... not in a 12 year old crush sort of way, but musically. I love his ideas, and the way he so owns at mandolin. For real. Love the flow.
A totally new take on The White Stripes...Love it! Any musician that can spin a song around like this is brilliant. I think I just love Chris Thile in general...
The White Stripes are one of my favorite bands, and one day I was flipping through the music channels and saw a live version of Chris Thile covering this, and I instantly fell in love with it. He certainly does it justice, and I guarantee Jack White loves this version. I recently purchased one of Nickel Creeks CD's and I'm really impressed with it. Great stuff.
I've seen him live countless times, and every time leaves me thinking I should give up the mandolin because I'll never be as good as him. But then I listen to Blind leaving the Blind and it inspires me to play again. Badass! Oh and one version is not better than the other. I love both equally for different reasons. Thile should be proud, and Jack should be honored.
The White Stripes are one of my favorite bands, and Jack White's one of my favorite musicians, but this is amazing! If you can't respect this cover you don't appreciate music.
For all the arguing about this version of the song, there's one guy who I know loves this rendition: Jack White. Apparently, he has more varied musical tastes than a lot of his fans.
i love that Thile can Play with everyone from Edgar Meyer and Yo-Yo Ma to Glenn Phillips and everything in between, and apply the same complete mastery to each and every playing situation. And jack aint that bad either.
Really classy comments here people... Jack White has done for guitar what Chris Thile has done for mandolin. Both are multi-instrumentalists, and both have expanded the concept of what their instruments are capable of. Comparing the two is impossible, since their styles and personality are so different. Jack is a minimalist while Chris is classically trained. Jack is outgoing and Chris is more reserved. Both deserve high praise and respect, if for no reason than we'll never be as talented.
even better..... when i see him play, i feel like so few people have even close to the level he plays on that mandolin when it comes down to any instrument
amen. "you just DONT cover The White Stripes." Well these guys did, and it rocks. Maybe he meant the person who posted the video doesn't cover the white stripes. This completely rocks.
Ok....Who ever says These guys aren't as talented as White Stripes are crazy. Im sorry. Chris Thile and Noam Pikelny know so much about their instruments its insane. Now Im not taking away from the White Stripes, they are amazing also, but but raw Talent goes to Chris Thile and How to Grow a Band, which is now the Punch Brothers
Jack White on the Vault today recommended fans to check out Thile and said "he's an incredible mandolin player" ... "i think he's the best in the world"
They played this at my school. Along with a cover of Packt Like Sardines in a Crushd Tin Box by Radiohead, which was fucking incredible considering how perfectly they imitated all of the atonal noise throughout the song with acoustic instruments.
if you are consider a debate of who is better, stop. clearly chris respects jack/white stripes enough to cover the song. They are both excellent players, with unbelievable talent on their instruments. likewise, they are both pushing their instruements in directions no one has thought of. i'd love to see jack and chris get together on a track, especially with the raconteurs who do an excellent bluegrass version of their song, "Old enough"
I don't know why but for some reason every Chris Thile's songs seems way longer than they are when you listen to them ... must be because he's a damn virtuoso with the mandolin
Great version of dead leaves he really makes it his own. Please check out our cover of this song we play it more like the original although I play the drums slightly faster. It's under johnnhoj5 there's some other white stripes covers on there too. Thanks
Calm down jeez. I love the White Stripes to death...but how can you not give Chris Thile credit here, hes so talented and he makes the song into something completely different and just as good in its own right (if not better). Its not an insult to the original if someone likes a cover better, its just a damn opinion. Jack White and Chris Thile is both talented as hell, even if some people dont see it in Jack White. People have different styles and opinions...
Okay, Jack White is great, he revolutionized the Blues/Rock genre. But Chris Thile trumps him simply because he CREATED A WHOLE NEW GENRE. Just listen to the new Punch Brothers album, Antifogmatic. It's like nothing the world has ever heard. Not to mention that The Blind Leaving the Blind is one of the most beautiful and complex pieces of music EVER written. You can nay-say all you want, but it has pretty much been decided. Chris is one of the most revolutionary musicians of the 20th century.
How bout this. I didnt even KNOW it was a Jack White song til I looked at all these comments. I just thought it was a great song. Too bad all you haters disagree for no reason.
just to put your opinion in perspective, are you a musician or a pop-music listener? this stuff isn't about the vocals, but about the mandolin playing..
I heard Chris Thile playing Bach, but I like him MUCH better as bluegrass player. he does classical the same way a hip hop dancer would approach ballet With this being said: no doubt the guy can play....
"Otherwise, covers hardly ever even live up to the original" - Krules17 I think it all depends on who is playing the cover...Chris Thile for instance is amazing on the covers I have heard him play. When playing somebody else's music, one can only hope that they are able to do justice to the song. Even if you are playing everything note for note, and singing word for word, you still are not the artist, and their passion for the song will be different. Different artist, different interpretation.
if cover means killing and burning it yes the done made this song good if not one of the best you wont hear ever .. its a shame but yeah people with talent stole for the good of our ears
ha! you must be like 16. chris is one of the best mandolin players in the world - and while jack white is good and stuff - musician-wise you should consider this a tribute. i am sure jack listens to this and loves it .
@kmassy8 Yeah but no matter how main stream Jack White is...Hes still better lol... Plus I know it is harder...but Jack is still a better performer/musical genius...Put a vote on it just based off of talent and Jack would win. Chris is extremely talented...just not JW talented.
jack white is a lot better than 'good and stuff'...i mean to make no qualms here.. but, he did hook up a slide guitar by two nails a piece of wood and a pick up.. i think that constitutes as being pretty badd the F*&K ass... chris is a good mandolin player for sure... but at least give credit where its due... even if you don't particularly care for the artist.
I am so in love with Chris Thile... not in a 12 year old crush sort of way, but musically. I love his ideas, and the way he so owns at mandolin. For real. Love the flow.

i just heard that on the radio five minutes ago. BLEW MY MIND!
Wow! Hadn't seen this before. Awesome! He so rocked in concert! Band too!
One of the best covers, bar none, that I've ever heard!
I saw him perform this solo at A Prairie Home Companion in New York last night and it was out of this world. He is incredible!
Nothing short of amazing!
Very nice redemption of the song. Unrequited love.
i would to see him to a hendrix cover album wow
bluegrass rules
The first 8 bars of this song is my ring tone. Love it!
He needs to do more of this!! I need more dead leaves style songs.
The White Stripes are one of my favorite bands, and Jack White's one of my favorite musicians, but this is amazing! If you can't respect this cover you don't appreciate music.
For all the arguing about this version of the song, there's one guy who I know loves this rendition: Jack White.

Wow! Thile has really loosened up vocally with the new group. I am much impressed!
American Talent at one of it's best.
Anyone listening in 2024? What a great cover!
OMG! This is so amazing! I liove it!
i get to see him in feb- cant wait he is amazing!!!! =}
Hot damn Chris just tears the strings off of the Mando!!!!
Solid gold.
I do love me some chris thile.
I absolutely adore this version, much more than the original even.
Mine too! I'm so glad someone else did this XD
The man earned the title of worlds best at age 12. 'Nuff said!
I really like this, and Im a huge white stripes fan.
Of the 116, 707 views this video has, i think i can account for at least 20 of them :P Great cover!
God I love him!
When he was 12 he was playing with nickel creek at winfield national flat picking championship.. he took number one that year i watched it..
Woooo! Gabe Witcher on fiddle rocks!!!!
Love this cover almost as much as the original!!
Chris Thile, Thank you for taking a horrible song, and arranging it into something listenable. I appreciate it!
i love that Thile can Play with everyone from Edgar Meyer and Yo-Yo Ma to Glenn Phillips and everything in between, and apply the same complete mastery to each and every playing situation. And jack aint that bad either.

Wow! I'm a die-hard Jack White fan but I have to admit that this is pretty neat!
@AirHendrix91 ; It's intended to be more old-time/bluegrass oriented than country. I think Jack White would be proud, personally.
lol me too haha, on that one show with the guy.. fuck i forgot his name.. but yeah i heard it on there too lol
i think we call all agree its just good
@guentherbacon He's a mandolin player himself, I'm sure he's honored.
even better..... when i see him play, i feel like so few people have even close to the level he plays on that mandolin when it comes down to any instrument

He puts the 'man' in mandolin.
skateposeur12 This was the funniest thing that was said in 2013!
Adam Steffey is primarily a mandolin player
For a while so you're not alone!
They played this at my school. Along with a cover of Packt Like Sardines in a Crushd Tin Box by Radiohead, which was fucking incredible considering how perfectly they imitated all of the atonal noise throughout the song with acoustic instruments.

who conducted that study? though this rendition does kick ass its kinda hard to compare jack's unique avante-blues style with bluegrass
I like this better than the original 🤐
Chris Thile & Bela Fleck also do an excellent cover Radiohead's Morning Bell
I don't know why but for some reason every Chris Thile's songs seems way longer than they are when you listen to them ... must be because he's a damn virtuoso with the mandolin
Is this new? Im shocked!
Great version of dead leaves he really makes it his own. Please check out our cover of this song we play it more like the original although I play the drums slightly faster. It's under johnnhoj5 there's some other white stripes covers on there too. Thanks
Tight
its the punch brothers but yes there amazing
Good cover i think!
Jack does a mean cover of Jolene. Go check that one out.
when was it first done by chris thile?
Deceiver is my favorite Chris Thile album to date. There isn't a song that I don't like on any of his albums though.
To me this cover is better than the titanic original. This is Thile pulling a Hendrix Watchtower!
Calm down jeez. I love the White Stripes to death...but how can you not give Chris Thile credit here, hes so talented and he makes the song into something completely different and just as good in its own right (if not better). @Jldb87 banjo you mean

This would be a sweet mash-up with Man of Constant Sorrow
How bout this. I didnt even KNOW it was a Jack White song til I looked at all these comments. I just thought it was a great song. Too bad all you haters disagree for no reason.
can..... gosh darnett
Then we´re two :-)
Fucking bad ass.Kind of reminds me of Iron Horse.
To be fair, its just a new take on the song. Jack does plenty of bluegrass. He did the Cold Mountain soundtrack.
An interesting rendition of the White Stripes song. A little bouncier than the original, but that's largely because of the instrumentation.
just to put your opinion in perspective, are you a musician or a pop-music listener? this stuff isn't about the vocals, but about the mandolin playing..
Yeah realize the White Stripes have covered many many musicians throughout their career as well right?
Learn to comment.
Thanks.
@FICKm3inLEBEN all different types, as long as they are real musicians.
Yep originaly a White Stripes tune, but this version is great
@ohwellokay Jack White.....HAHAHA!!!.....isnt it crazy the way people think sometimes, ohwellokay?
I heard Chris Thile playing Bach, but I like him MUCH better as bluegrass player. he does classical the same way a hip hop dancer would approach ballet
With this being said: no doubt the guy can play....
no...white stripes is
@ohwellokay not just "loves it" he wishes he could play like that
I think I kinda prefer White's music style, but it's pretty obvious (imo) that Thile is a better musician, vocalist, you name it.
You gotta have some serious balls to cover the White Stripes. This guy's got chops.
Chris is like Jimi Hendrix on the mandolin xD
"Otherwise, covers hardly ever even live up to the original" - Krules17
I think it all depends on who is playing the cover...Chris Thile for instance is amazing on the covers I have heard him play. Never live up to the White Stripes? are you kidding me?
Are you kidding. This version kills the white stripes version.
if cover means killing and burning it yes the done made this song good if not one of the best you wont hear ever .. its a shame but yeah people with talent stole for the good of our ears
@RyanTurtle21 not to mention hes a MUCH MUCH MUCH better musician.
Then they're all like the Jimi Hendrix Experience of bluegrass
blue metal grass?
ha! you must be like 16. chris is one of the best mandolin players in the world - and while jack white is good and stuff - musician-wise you should consider this a tribute. i am sure jack listens to this and loves it .
I listen to The White Stripes, Chris Thile, and Nickel Creek. So what? I have broad musical tastes.
@kmassy8 Yeah but no matter how main stream Jack White is...Hes still better lol...
Plus I know it is harder...but Jack is still a better performer/musical genius...Put a vote on it just based off of talent and Jack would win.
Chris is extremely talented...just not JW talented.
Love Chris, but Adam Steffy is the man on mandolin...
The White Stripes version is SO much better.
no, jack white wrote it
jack white is a lot better than 'good and stuff'...i mean to make no qualms here.. but, he did hook up a slide guitar by two nails a piece of wood and a pick up.. i think that constitutes as being pretty badd the F*&K ass... chris is a good mandolin player for sure... but at least give credit where its due... even if you don't particularly care for the artist.
@ohwellokay john paul jones is better
BOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!
white stripes = better.
lol cover
Good musically, but it's just not the real deal...
