100% agreed. Still the single most virtuosic show show I have ever seen. That said… I recommend Familiarity as a track to introduce the group. Just so much beauty in every note.
Punch Bros do a lot of stuff around a number of genres, and some that defy genre. I think House of the Blues was the name of the venue they were playing at, and Phosphorescent Blues as the album name is referring more to the color than the genre (and also the traditional/folky roots that are shared with the blues to an extent). They're the instruments that typically make up a bluegrass ensemble, so that is kind of their base sound and they use a lot of bluegrass tropes even in songs that sound nothing like bluegrass whatsoever. They're pretty fantastic, glad you've discovered them for yourself now.
They are generally classified as Bluegrass, but they are definitely on the progressive side and also virtually undefinable. It’s important to note that each member is a virtuoso in his own right as well
HarriBest, I don't know where you normally live musically, but Your pure joy about this outstanding performance is as infectious as the "gorgeous" music itself. Thanks for sharing!
Yay! No one ever reacts to Punch Brothers! I think they're listed as nu-progressive bluegrass. This album is called "The Phosphorescent Blues" and it's one of my all time favorites. If you like this, the lead singer did an album with YoYo Ma and others called "The Goat Rodeo Sessions", also excellent. If you like them, you might like Andrew Bird. He's an excellent multi-instrumentalist known for his violin playing and whistling (not kidding lol). Look for 'Anonanimal', or 'Plasticities' live versions. He's amazing.
Had the pleasure of seeing Chris Thile's prior band, Nickel Creek, in concert. Very talented musician....Checkout Nickel Creeks "When You Come Back Down," one of my favorite NC songs.
Imagine pitching this idea: Right lads, we've got Banjo, Guitar, Double Bass, Violin and Mandolin. What sort of music should we be doing? Bluegrass? Naaaahhhhh. Lets do a range of styles from Baroque (See Brandenburg recital which is gloriously superb...) blues, country and western, Bluegrass and every other possible style we can develop because we are all top end players!" Ooookkaaaaaayyyyy....................
Saw them in Dallas a while back. I've been listening to Nickle Creek since early 2000s. Punc Brother has some of if not the best folk/bluegrass/whatever they choose to be musicians.
Mandolin player and lead Chris Thile (also of Nickel Creek) doesn't have the best singing voice but I certainly wouldn' want to sing that lead. Thier musicianship is spectacular. This concert was amazing.
I would not have chosen that selection and think you were done a (am sure, unintentional) disservice - without having seen the tunes chosen before and after this piece, am Positive easily "taken out of context" as representative. There are other Punch selections far more interesting and challenging, but, also, quite pleasing (which this one is... well, more performance art than intended... melodification).
One of the best live shows anyone could ever see. Criminally underrated ensemble.

Thanks for this no one reacts to The Punch Brothers. They need more love. Check out Nickle Creek and Chris Thile's solo albums. Cheers.
You should listen to their song "Familiarity" next. Front Row Boston live version
Chris Thiele is the Jimi Hendrix of Mandolin!

really enjoyed this, kudos
Astounding musical talent. Highly recommend more of their works.

They play a lot of blue grass festivals, so I'd call it that. They are world class. A must see live if you get a chance.
Americana. Progressive bluegrass. Good music!

Never heard of them. Very nice!
I would say they're bluegrass-pop with a lot of classical and jazz influence. You have to check out the Flecktones next
I agree 100% All their stuff is great, but this song always brings out emotions in me which most music does not
The Apartment Sessions cover of this tune is ridiculously good.

Ch😢out Trampled by Turtles and The Cactus Blossoms!
You’ve gotta check out this song with Jon Batiste and company on Colbert. It definitely fills out the sound stage better.

I think he has a great voice. Probably kind of inspired by thom yorke
NuGrass? Nice reaction.
Ever heard "Honeybee" by Steam Powered Giraffe? If you like harmonies. 🙂
No “the”, just punch brothers

What band was the mandolin player in? Had girl fiddle player
Nickle Creek. Chris Thile also hosts "Live from Here" with amazing guest musicians.
@@JoelJB60 Hosted, past tense. 😥😥 I miss it so much!
