Chris is one of the few people who can say "we'll figure it out, it's gonna be fine" and then it actually turns out fine (or much better than just fine in this case). This performance is pure magic, all of them are incredible
@@Miglow Anyone can "put together" something "on the spot." Not many players can "put together" something "on the spot" and play it so amazingly as Chris Thile. You kinda missed the point.
Watching this, the communication between world class musicians, the nod, the wink, and then producing such outstanding sounds. We are in the presence of greatness.
The "bass player" is Mike Elizondo, who has produced for people such as Dr. Dre. He's a musical beast in his own right. Fiddle tunes are not his home court and he knew to sit out, but he can stand shoulder to shoulder with Thile, Eldridge, and Kittel, which is saying a *lot*. Watch more of the LFH canon, including where Elizondo channels Jaco Pastorius . ruclips.net/video/CBrEjBask34/видео.html. He won't be "the bass player" any more.
These are actually some of the more technically difficult tunes to play. But that's what you get from Bluegrass. World class musicians making difficult stuff sound easy.
Can’t go to concerts, because of COVID , but this is the next best substitute, this group of Musicians are just so talented and I’m so glad I found them today!! Life is good, but better with access to the fabulous Punch Brothers and, Chris Thiele!⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
I keep coming back to the St. Anne's Reel section and am mesmerized. I don't think even J.S. Bach could have written better point and counterpoint than what Jeremy Kittel and Chris Thile improvise here, beginning around 2:35
Haha:) Hmm.. Bassplayer thinking: "ok, I rather go backstage for a beer you fu%&$%#.,,," This happens when the main artist are soo high on himself. What a joke. This is known in this kind of music. Me my self- ME!.
SOOOOOOO GOOD! Kittle's flow is on point. Critter's rhythm - get out of here! Thile's aight too... :) Thanks for your craft y'all! Sending love from MI!
@@FilipPandrc Agreed. If Chris (or any of them) quit when they heard better players, we wouldn't have them now. FWIW - I quit fiddle a few times when I was starting out, but never for more than 10 minutes or so. That's about how long it took me to realize that if I quit it, then I'd *really* never be able to play well.
It's up to the listener to decide if this is inspiring or intimidating. Me, I'm tempted to use my mandolin for kindling. But practice, practice, practice! Five hours a day should be enough...
These are 3 staple songs that pretty much every bluegrass player knows and can play at least rhythm for. That being said, leave it to there guys to take it to the next, next, next level. St Anne's Reel is such a pretty melody.
I play a couple of instruments, and often when I hear the really talented ones play I get inspired. When I hear Chris Thile I want to quit. What's the point after all! (Just kidding really. But he is extraordinary.)
There are lyrics to the song whiskey before breakfast. I know because I’ve heard Mike cross performance multiple times and it’s also on one of his vinyl efforts often referred to as long play album.
@@124retlksncvlifvlxiu The band that was supposed to open canceled, so they got us, and we were a 3 piece, he was solo, and (obviously) blew us out of the water because he is amazing. Like literally, I think people were asking: "why did THAT band open for him".
Any chance of getting this show up and running again? In my all-too many years of concert-going, YouTubing, and just plain listening, I've never been so impressed, moved and edified as I was with the music on this humble show (a victim of The Covid). Maybe it's up and running somewhere else, in this age of streaming; if so, I'd sure like to know. Blessings to all who gave me, my family, and many others so much joy.
These guys can PLAY. So rarely in the modern musical landscape do we see this: actual musicians, playing actual, non-computer aided instruments. They don't even need electricity really! Thile, as annoying as he can be at times, is probably the best mandolin player to have lived, ever, and the other guys aren't bad either. A truly magical performance!
Not so sure about that. Have you listened to the Johann Sebastian Bach “Violin Sonatas and Partitas for Unaccompanied Violin? In my humble opinion, there’s nothing like those pieces of music anywhere.
Just to keep up with Thile you have to be a master of the craft. Thile is a virtuoso genius with an inhuman memory and ability to improvise. Note that they are skipping tunes with little/no announcement. They are known tunes, but still.

Not all that uncommon in trad scenes. Most sets at most sessions are medleys that are put together on the spot.
@@Miglow True, but I meant more in general with life, like Murphy's Law. I take your point though

@@coryCuc that's exactly right. Most players would be much better to plan ahead a rehearse; these guys are a separate species.
well said!

I love the bass player's face during Salt Creek, it's obvious he knows he's sitting right smack in the middle of something incredible unfolding
bass player? really? dint hear a bass
@@amandasteven1400He didn't actually play the bass. He put it down at 4:00 into video.

I am so very late, but Mike was also the musical director for the whole show, he absolutely knows what he's doing lol
I like how he puts his bass on......then off again very quickly 🙂
These guys are in perfect sync with their instruments. Effortlessly playing what some can only dream of...well done Sirs
I came looking to hear Whiskey Before Breakfast, but St. Anne's Reel caught my heart. Never heard it before, it's like the embodiment of serenity
It's so nice when amazing musicians play things which are intrinsically simple and just toy with them like this.
I keep coming back to this video but only just looked at the comments. Yo, Henry.

Three of my favorite fiddle tunes! The bass player is spellbound.
That’s real music!
Contrabass are missing. Both a bas, string and a drum.
Absolutely beautiful. That moment when they transition into Whiskey Before Breakfast though ... oh man. I wish I could just listen to that on repeat.

I like it when he says time to talk about horses or something
This made my night shift half tolerable!
This is like watching the Dillards back in the 1960s. Truly awesome!
I hope Chris Thile and this show lasts a long, long time.

Thile has the softest high notes, and I would love to understand because our mandolinist high notes pierce my ear at times.
Your mandolinist may just not be sure they're heard in the "mix". It's a surprisingly quiet instrument from the player's point of view
Critter bringing that HEAT 🔥🔥
best video ever
Nice pickin', Critter.
These guys would make a great trio as it is.
