I saw the Punch Brothers last night in Dallas. The first call back consisted of Thile coming out and playing a 4 minute Bach piece to absolutely stunned silence. He deserves every penny of his MacArthur grant and all the recognition that goes with it. He is a true genius.
Thank god. My life would be so much lesser without Chris. Had the pleasure of seeing him probably 50 times and in some of the most obsure places. 3am, in the woods, can't remember them all. 6am just waking up, on and on. The best living musician.
It's taken me about a month, but I've just finished learning this piece myself (obviously not as fast or accurately as Chris though). Coming from a folk mandolin background, working on this has been a mind-blowing experience. Thank you so much Chris Thile for introducing me to the world of classical mandolin!
BRAVO! It's not an easy piece. My fingers just run out of steam by the time I get half way through. He doesn't even look like he's pressuring on the strings. The talented Mr. Thile! Gadzooks! This is one of my top faves of Herr Bach. I Iove the sinfonia version from Cantata No. 29.
Bach is the master. Baroque music works very well on the mandolin. It's really in all I play. Try some Vivaldi, too. Try Vivaldi's RV 532, Concerto in G for two mandolins and strings. He wrote a lot of stuff for mandolin, albeit baroque mandolin. Händel's Water Music is splendid as well as hls Concerti Grossi, Opus 6. Fun to play and nowhere near as difficult as Bach. Emanuele Barbella wrote some fun stuff for mandolin as well. Even Mozart wrote for mandolin. Die Zufriedenheit and Komm Lieber Zither Komm. Beethoven too!
Bach is just an ultimate test for anyone's technical capability. Therefore he became my all-time favourite music material for listening and rehearsing.Chris Thile is brilliant as always.Whatever he touches turns to gold.
There are many undiscovered talented individuals out there... Pick up that instrument and continue practising ! My father always said to me. "If he can do it so can you."
i was at the portsmouth show the night chris received it, they tore the house down, i'll see him every chance i get, real music , and american too love it
Although I realize it's the normal way to play, I'm still astonished at the speed and precision with which you can play a mandolin with a pick (rather than fingers as with a classical guitar). A beautiful job. Wonderful piece.
I love his super-cute, satisfied smile at the end, and that he never looks at the camera, because this humble, HANDSOME young man only shares his talents with the world, he never gloats... Love you, Chris.
Do y'all know how hard this piece is?? It is touted as one of more difficult pieces for both lute and violin. It is incredible that he is able to pull that off with his instrument. He is no joke!!
It's wonderful and breathtaking and stunning.. My favorite note is the last one. It's like after busting that thing out so well he can't believe it was muted.. That smile breaking across his face is a pretty nice human moment. I feel you, man. I'm really looking forward to this video.
Here, here. This piece is also known as the Sinfonia to Cantata No. 29. First heard this piece like, oh, 40 years ago on the Walter&Wendy Carlo (s album Switched-On Bach. Been in love with it since! Thanks for posting. Joel Hastings performs an arrangement of this piece on piano and Diane Bish performs the arrangement for organ (both on youtube). Both have their merits if you want to hear it on different instruments. Can't get enough of this piece of music.
Hey, the bumper sticker on his case is from the Texas Tavern, a famous eatery in Roanoke, VA! The Punch Brothers played here earlier this year. One of the best shows I've ever seen. Meanwhile, your Bach Project looks awesome. Best of luck with it!
Just got done watching John Williams play this, arguably the best classical guitarist of our time and the pace and fluidity that Chris plays this blows Williams out of the water.
Violin Partita #3 in E major. There are 3 partitas and 3 sonatas for solo violin usually sold as a 2-CD set. Every major violinist has done them (Henryk Szeryng CRANKS), and Eliot Fisk - guitar, Nigel North - lute.
A complete pleasure! The wonder of Bach is that his music addresses all genres from even before his own time through to blues and jazz. It shows us through the mirror that is music our most humane self. Every musician the world over should bow their head in thanks to him. I enjoyed your performance very much!
It is not about harder or easier. Many people can reproce the notes from the page on their instruments. the IT is the life and soul of the music. So many classical musicians are so taken with performing the dots off the page they miss the swing that cannot be notated. Quantz talked about swing, I know Bach had to know about it also. Making the tones all fit together so it makes sense. Many musicians lack this because they are just playing the dots on the page. Usually in empty halls.
Great humanity with no loss of precision. Great precision with no loss of humanity. And it was nice to hear the piece at its proper pitch, not a half-step down as so often happens with Baroque performance nowadays.
The Ultems before Dunlop started making them. He also mentioned that he didn't have any at the time...I knew the booth where they had 'em so I ran over and bought a few & brought them back for Chris. Very nice guy & he doesn't put on airs either!
A great clip to revisit for inspiration. That smirk at 3:26 says it all - the look of someone privately realizing how much they just kicked ass in a severely metaphysical way ;-)
@infledermaus I just saw a version of that, on your suggestion. I must say, it is equally as beautiful as the Rachmaninoff version. Like I said, there's something about this prelude that's timeless, eternal, yet fresh and new with every listen. There is joy in this piece that is universal: joy for life and beauty itself itself, a quality that you so rarely hear in even the most beautiful works, and certainly one that is so rarely expressed with such effectiveness as it is in this piece.
Hey Manalin players, did you notice he plays with the POINT of the triangle pick? He generally uses "Ultems" by Clayton. He mentioned this at a workshop at Merlefest - the same year he & Mike Marshall got together. I was sitting next to Mike with Chris & Michael Kang sitting across from us. Chris & Mike were going in between Choro, Lady Be Good and back to fiddle tunes.
No one can touch Bach. He's basically proof of a higher power... ...and of course, Thile is pretty much untouchable as well. I love this performance so much. So moving.

I'm glad this guy decided to visit our planet.
me too....

I see that formerly, he used a bigger and more flexible pick. Maybe it plays a role in his ability to stay around the strings and move so fast?
Each time I watch and listen to this video I'm left speechless. The music is timeless; the player has achieved the highest level of artistry.
Bach is just an ultimate test for anyone's technical capability. Therefore he became my all-time favourite music material for listening and rehearsing.Chris Thile is brilliant as always.Whatever he touches turns to gold.
Chris Thile is an ideal musician by my definition. Versatile, expressive, intellectual, relatable.
A whole different Realm on the Mandolin. I Like it!
This video is so intimate, close-up of a master performer reflecting the simplicity, passion and brilliance of the composer! 💐Thanks C.T.
I believe he is the best mandolin player in the world....so clean playing of the no. It is not so easy. gr8 artist. god bless you Chris Thile. ..
PRADIPTA SENGUPTA one mandolin master complementing another mandolin master...that's awesome.
I think you mean of all time
See hamilton de hollanda
agree
Chris is gifted to the extreme with a musical brain and with his fine motor skills. It takes both to be a true virtuoso.
Such accurate fingerwork and yet the line carries on through. Amazing!
There are many undiscovered talented individuals out there...
Pick up that instrument and continue practising !
My father always said to me.
"If he can do it so can you."
Ooh yes! Just heard it live on beeb’s front row. 🙏🏻
Oh my god! This is so so awesome! Thank you very very much for that masterpiece!❤️ Many greetings from Germany 🙋🏻
I have been partially in love with this man since I was like, 13 years old. LOL. He is absolutely amazing
i was at the portsmouth show the night chris received it, they tore the house down, i'll see him every chance i get, real music , and american too love it
I love Chris for being soo much in love with this music.
I LOVE how this sounds on mandolin!!! I takes on a whole new character.
Although I realize it's the normal way to play, I'm still astonished at the speed and precision with which you can play a mandolin with a pick (rather than fingers as with a classical guitar). A beautiful job. Wonderful piece.
I think I will watch this over and over.
I love his super-cute, satisfied smile at the end, and that he never looks at the camera, because this humble, HANDSOME young man only shares his talents with the world, he never gloats... Love you, Chris.
ENCORE! ENCORE! I loved seeing Chris Thile at Carnegie Hall last year.
That's extraordinary! I wish I could play like that...
Thank you RUclips for suggesting this video.
Absolutely beautiful. I smiled at the end too.. sweet
Chris never gives up the energy or fluidity in order to achieve the wonderful Bach dynamics - the other player is good, but this one is beast.
I could watch this over and over and over again. wow.
I love Chris Thile. I first saw him in '93 at IBMA. Even as a child he was an incredible force to be reckoned with and a joy to see and hear!
Thank goodness for music, sweet music. One senses Thile listening to his own playing. What a balm.
Holy wow...superb composition and masterfully performed by a young Chris Thile. Great stuff...
Bach would definitely be happy!!! Thank you!

Can't be played better!
How does this not have more views?
brilliant...seen nickle creek twice in seattle.....love chris sean and sara
This guy....is breaking my heart. What a stud.
Incredibly virtuostic and emotional rendition. I love it.
Child prodigy grows into his enormous talent. Thank you brother.
he makes everything look sooo easy. wow.
A musician who has mastered his instrument and truley understands music. That is what.
the laugh at the end is the real happiness
What is going on in the brain to make that happen??? Flawless, articulate, amazing. Am in awe of you Sir.
Clean and beautiful. I appreciate the fact that his breathing is very quiet.
Clap clap clap. What a gem.

Wow. how glad you can be. I think he´ll never come to Germany, but if he does, I´ll be there.
For some reason I listen to this song when I'm depressed and stressed out, I feel better after listening to it 4-5 times.
Same. Exactly same.
Quel bonheur et un grand merci!!!!!

Machines do not move with such precision and grace.

That is the most beautiful, yet fucked up, thing I have heard all day long.
Thank you.
blissful.
Every music genius composer, needs music genius performer....thank for the great music and performance...
Fantastic
there are some musicians who will inspire you and there are some who leave you speechless

Awesomeness..........
Is it bad that if Chris Thile is in the video I like it before it even loads?
This is...beyond brilliant. I honestly have no words for how perfect this is.
blown away...wow

he is an otherworldly master of the mando. im in love with those fingers.
fantastic!
Mmm. Beautiful. I want to see this documentary.
Hi Chris, Beautifully done! Hope you release it on itunes soon. Best wishes, Ron :-)
Great humanity with no loss of precision. Great precision with no loss of humanity. And it was nice to hear the piece at its proper pitch, not a half-step down as so often happens with Baroque performance nowadays.
+Andrew Margrave Baroque pitch, while varied country to country and place to place, it was approximately a half-step lower.
Grande chiarezza. Bravoooo

Simply beautiful to the soul
He is absolutely one of the most talented men on the planet. Been listening to Nickel Creek since I can't even remember. This is beyond incredible. :)
very nice music!
Please have the camera focus on the right hand. Great performance.
This is purely magical!
Wonderful ! Bravo !
Truly beautiful!
Wow! I'm in love....

highly gifted...real joy
Beautiful piece. I wish I could play like that...
Great phrasing/dynamics... I'm blown away
beautiful, bravo
brilliant
Without the first generation there would be nothing.
Love Chris
good audio capture, i felt like i could hear the softer/quieter parts very well, without being amplified after the fact/having white noise
Actually, this piece is included in Mike Marshall's Sonatas and Partitas by JS Bach (p. 34). These are written out in standard notation and TAB.
Nice stuff...and very well played
