This song changed my life. No shit. I awoke to this on a Jay Leno Tonight Show. Aoife, Chris, Edgar, Stuart became part of my passion. Yo-Yo was raised much higher on my altar. Even my insane appreciation of bluegrass music really began that night. I fight the tears in my eyes as I sing along.."fall not winter, spring not summer, cool not cold. Where it's warn not hot have we all forgotten that we're getting old". This song truly changed my life. It's not been the same ever since, and I am ever thankful.
It was Stuart Duncan who said that. You can tell because the '3' and the 'don't' overlap. I almost got sent to the principles' office in highshcool orchestra when I tried the same thing to the first violinist after I saw this video the first time. I was saved only by virtue of the argument that if the greatest Bluegrass fiddler of our time can say it so can I deep in the second-violin section of an unremarkable highschool orchestra.
This song makes me realize how Americana/folk will always be a powerful genre in modern music. Props to Chris and Aoife for constructing such a mesmerizing piece. Flawlessly executed, and boy is it fun to watch them hit the chorus at 100MPH. Such intensity, talent, and power in this whole group. Wowza.
Just saw Chris and Aoife in Raleigh last weekend. It was wonderful. Can’t express how much I love their music. Aoife’s voice. Chris’s musicianship. I get the feeling that Chris never sleeps. And he’s clearly obsessive over tuning, just like all the other greats.
Aoife's voice is amazing. When I first heard her singing on Crooked Still's rendition of 'Come in My Kitchen' I was blown away. It is such a gift to watch artists who are so in the zone -- and to watch and hear the energy build and build is astonishing. It doesn't get any better.
Crooked still has been my go to favorite bluegrass band for years, then I found Goat rodeo and was blown away that legends like Yo Yo Ma and Chris Thile are working together , and now this is the cross over of the century
It's over, and you realize it should have been longer, so you listen to it again. And again, and..... The open back banjo sound is perfect in this song.
They just put a smile on your face. The ability to get together with such amazing musicians and jam and just discover what comes out. I cannot imagine how fun that was. Aoife O'Donovan also has an amazing voice just beautiful, like it was created for this song.
This seems like they've reached some sort of pinnacle of artistry, some peak I haven't heard in a long time, if ever. Yo Yo Ma and everyone here shine so amazingly. I can only thank each one of you and whoever else was responsible for getting this incredible performance accomplished and sent out to the world.
This song and album have lead me on a neo bluegrass journey in its fifth year. Just a great ride including Sarah Jarosz, Aoife , Chris, I’m with Her, Nickel Creek , Crooked Still, Steve Martin , The Felktones , the Kruger Bros. So rich with great music
+Adam Ross In an other video, Edgar Meyer and Chris Thile said something like that: "we are four at stage", but they were five, only they didn't count Aoife.... it's horrible.
+Adam Ross probably because she looks constipated while singing and is an average singer in the grand scheme of things. why give credit to a lazy someone who still has so much work to do?
It's been over 3 years and this is still my favorite song ever. A perfect balance of vocals and instrumental, with no one battling for the lead. Thank you for giving us such an amazing piece!
These vocalists are amazing !! Well and Yo-Yo ... (goes without saying) With a hammer and nails and a fear of failure we are building a shed Between here and heaven between the wait and the wedding for as long as we both shall be dead to the world beyond the boys and the girls trying to keep us calm We can practice our lines 'til we're deaf and blind to ourselves to each other where it's Fall not winter spring not summer cool not cold And it's warm not hot have you all forgotten that we're getting old With an arrow and bow and some seeds left to sow we are staking our claim On ground so fertile we forget who we've hurt along the way and reach out for a strange hand to hold someone strong but not bold enough to tear down the wall 'Cause we're not lost enough to find the stars aren't crossed why align them why fall hard not soft into Fall not winter spring not summer cool not cold And it's warm not hot have we all forgotten that we're getting old And it’s fall, not winter, spring, not summer, cool, not cold And it’s warm, not hot, has everyone forgotten that we’re getting old And it’s fall, not winter, spring, not summer, cool, not cold And it’s warm, not hot, have we all forgotten that we’re getting old ~Chris Thile Welcome
I was blessed to see Chris Thile & Aoife O’Donovan perform this LIVE backed up by the Orlando Philharmonic Orchestra (her husband, Eric Jacobsen, is the conductor/music director :) last Saturday, Feb 25, 2023. It was a larger than life, yet meditative, experience in contrast to the sublime intimate studio moment. Not sure if this was their intention but my response to this amazing song, as a Christian, was to challenge myself to do better with what time remains to me on Earth, reconcile with those I may have wronged (or not forgiven) and not distract myself with narcissistic excuses. Am I reading too much into it?
This one's the standout on a GREAT album, and made me purchase it on iTunes. I really can't decide which artist impresses me the most on this album, or this song. Ms. O'Donovan, the guest vocalist, had to pack a lunch to keep up with this set of gents... and she managed superbly. She and Chris Thile are squeezing every last bit out of themselves for this. Which is what it takes to make something that hits me so squarely where I live. Great music. Great video. It's great to be alive.
I fracking love this album! I bought it when it first came out.. always loved Yo Yo Ma.. He's such a diverse artist. Love the flavor .. like old mountain music.
Of course, everyone knows Edgar M, Yo-yo M, Stuart D, and Chris Th, are powerhouse musicians, but WHO IS THIS WOMAN? She's a fabulous singer, great passion and spot on harmony - who is the mystery woman?
Prune Rooney She was the lead singer for Crooked Still, a bluegrass bans of the first decade of this century, they also helped pioneer the use of the cello in bluegrass. Everything they do will send a shiver down your spine. They recorded Ain't no grave, which was used as the theme song for "True Bloods"
I love how the music starts with a quiet layer, then another & another, building plaintive urgency with the voices, then Yoyo’s cello, but really catching fire with Edgar bringing in the base rhythm…🤗
She may have been a guest singer on two tracks but on this one she is also credited as being one of the writers, so she should have been named in the RUclips video title and description.
I do agree however... we all are stardust & all should be credited for the work we do .. we are all equal. Peace ‘n love.. keep waking up world .. we ALL have work to do... I enjoyed the female vocals a lot.. great work lady I hope you know how awesome you are.
Superb. One thing that I notice is how Chris maintains eye contact with Aoife, both here and in the onstage recordings. Don't know whether this is a 'thought out' practice, but I can't help but believe establishes an emotional connect that adds quite a lot to the music. Really a neat session, IMO

years and years later, i still cannot fully describe how this song makes me feel in my soul
Me too
Same. Song is so underrated
Totally!,,,,
What a find!!
Yes. I keep going back to it over the months and it always transports me.
I cannot express how much I appreciate that Chris unmistakably begins this performance by saying "1, 2, 3, don't fuck up"
how did you hear that. unmistakably, yes
I don’t know how you noticed it. Definitely does though. Lol
This should be the top comment.
Aoife's ability to blend her voice with another is amazing. What a great harmony singer. This is a great album.
I come back to this stunning performance every few months and am more blown away every time I listen to it.
So fucking good! ❤️
Same... for years now
Amen. Absolutely incredible
Likewise!
Oh me too! Me too!
Notice when the bass kicks in with the pulse that the rest of the group just lets loose. What a brilliant song.
The cello around 3:30 is one of the most beautiful things I've ever heard.
Agreed! Please make a second goat rodeo album @yoyoma !
What the fuck just happened? How is all music not this?
Truly. One of the finest songs of all time, for so many reasons.
how is all music not this? because...it is other music?
This song makes me realize how Americana/folk will always be a powerful genre in modern music.
Props to Chris and Aoife for constructing such a mesmerizing piece. Flawlessly executed, and boy is it fun to watch them hit the chorus at 100MPH. Such intensity, talent, and power in this whole group. Wowza.
Well said 💕
American/folk with a large dose of traditional English/Celtic folk music going back to the madrigals.
The talent in this room is mind-blowing. Such an incredible ensemble
Did not count how many times I have listened to this, still moves these old bones!
Aoife O'Donovan's voice sits beautifully in this piece; the timbre of her voice nestled tastily like an egg in a basket.
LOL - could use a little work on your analogies there, unless this is some sort of euphemism I'm unaware of. But yeah, she's great in this song.
@@WR3ND clearly you've never taken a fork and knife up a tree to go feast on an egg in a bird nest. Missing out bro.
A song you just don't want to end.
@Peace Hello, how are you doing? It is nice meeting you here.
@Peace Hello, how are you doing? It is nice meeting you here.
totally speechless, that was just, wow, i, geez. a room full of got dang geniuses, just sublime.
If you are wearing good headphones, as he's counting in 1 2 3 you can hear someone whisper "Don't F@$! Up".
+ent2186 I can hear it with my laptop speakers :D...
+ent2186 this just made my day lol
+ent2186 I can't hear it :-(
I thought I was schizophrenic!!!!
Has anyone figured out who said it?
Chris Thile probably has my favorite accompanying male voice of all time. That guy just sounds great doing parts.
Lyrics:
With a hammer and nails and a fear of failure we are building a shed
Between here and heaven between the wait and the wedding for as long as we both shall be dead
To the world beyond the boys and the girls trying to keep us calm
We can practice our lines 'til we're deaf and blind to ourselves to each other
Where it's fall not winter spring not summer cool not cold
And it's warm not hot have we all forgotten that we're getting old
With an arrow and bow and some seeds left to sow we are staking our claim
On ground so fertile we forget who we've hurt along the way and reach out
For a strange hand to hold someone strong but not bold enough to tear down the wall
'Cause we aint lost enough to find the stars aren't crossed why align them why fall hard not soft
Into fall not winter spring not summer cool not cold
Where it's warm not hot have we all forgotten that we're getting old
And it's fall not winter spring not summer cool not cold
And it's warm not hot has everyone forgotten that we're getting old
And it's fall not winter spring not summer cool not cold
And it's warm not hot have we all forgotten that we're getting old

Thank you
An adequate superlative does not come to mind to describe this performance!! Goosebumps and awe and gratefulness. Thank you.
@pamela Hello, how are you doing? It is nice meeting you here.
Hats off to the sound engineer. Stellar sound quality!
Aoife's voice is amazing. When I first heard her singing on Crooked Still's rendition of 'Come in My Kitchen' I was blown away. It is such a gift to watch artists who are so in the zone -- and to watch and hear the energy build and build is astonishing.

One of my favorite albums of all time. Love that this video exists.
Among other things, I just love how Yo Yo Ma brings his 'chops' to traditional music.
Absolutely love the use of the viols. I wish people used them more in other styles of music besides renaissance and baroque.
This seems like they've reached some sort of pinnacle of artistry, some peak I haven't heard in a long time, if ever. Yo Yo Ma and everyone here shine so amazingly. I can only thank each one of you and whoever else was responsible for getting this incredible performance accomplished and sent out to the world.
it's been years, and i've listened to it a lot of times, but this performance still blows my fuckin head off
Incredible. I rarely throw the word genius around but in this case, the collaboration formed here certainly comes close.
When I hear music this good it makes me want to quit. It doesn't get any better than this. The last minute is painfully wonderful !!!
No mention in the title or description of Aoife O'Donovan; vocalist and co-writer of the song?
+Adam Ross In an other video, Edgar Meyer and Chris Thile said something like that: "we are four at stage", but they were five, only they didn't count Aoife.... it's horrible.
+Adam Ross RIght is right and you sir are right. IMO "Starring Aoife O'Donovan"!
+Adam Ross probably because she looks constipated while singing and is an average singer in the grand scheme of things. why give credit to a lazy someone who still has so much work to do?
What ARE you on about? She's incredible!
Troller. Nothing to see here. Move along.
I love yoyo ma & bluegrass, this is the best of two worlds. I am having a blast
@elsa Hello, how are you doing? It is nice meeting you here.
Absolutely beautiful performance 😊🎶❤️😊🎶❤️

Rich, deep and seductive. Amazing piece of music.
Although we all get old, this never does!
Hello Susie, I hope you are doing well? It’s really nice meeting you here.
Beautiful blending of vocal and string harmonies during the Chorus segment. It touches the soul.
I love everything about this.
The female singer is Aoife O'Donovan, and she is named at the 7 second mark on the video..
Favorite song of all time at the moment! Love everything about it!!! I’m coming back to this song multiple times every day!!!
Fall always brings me back to this gorgeous rich music.🍃🍁🍂
shut up!!! So good it hurts! Damn! love love love

Powerful! ❤ I would love to see this group of musicians live.

@tiffany Hello, how are you doing? It is nice meeting you here.
My birth mother shared this with me while she was working through her cancer treatments. It’s a beautiful song that gave her hope. Thank you.
Beyond incredible !
This song is the exclamation point to the fusion of Blue Grass & Celtic!
@diane Hello, how are you doing? It is nice meeting you here.
Of course, everyone knows Edgar M, Yo-yo M, Stuart D, and Chris Th, are powerhouse musicians, but WHO IS THIS WOMAN? She's a fabulous singer, great passion and spot on harmony - who is the mystery woman?
Prune Rooney Her name is Aoife O'Donovan!
She is no mystery, Aoife is "Pretty Good" on her own.
Prune Rooney If You want more, take a look at Crooked Still
Prune Rooney She was the lead singer for Crooked Still, a bluegrass bans of the first decade of this century, they also helped pioneer the use of the cello in bluegrass. Everything they do will send a shiver down your spine. They recorded Ain't no grave, which was used as the theme song for "True Bloods"
Pigby12 She's amazing. PERFECT for this.
My favorite song.Cant think of another,I enjoy as much.Love, love, love it.
Five world class musicians ... it doesn't get any better than this.
I love how the music starts with a quiet layer, then another & another, building plaintive urgency with the voices, then Yoyo’s cello, but really catching fire with Edgar bringing in the base rhythm…🤗
this is one of the greatest builds of all time.
This song is absolute heaven!
Yes
The Goat Rodeo Sessions . . . amazing stuff
Proof, that people can come together and do beautiful things.
Chris's backup vocals are astounding. Such a monster talent
Such a beautiful lady. Love Aoife ❤
Perfection.
Stuart Duncan, Edgar Meyer, Aoife O'Donovan, Chris Thile & YoYoMa, Goat Rodeo Sessions
I like the energy of this one and my cat does too. Rita is running and dancing and playing with her toys.
Wow! not to often a song gets me in the feels like that.
Seriously... unbelievable! I've never heard anything like it. My hats of to all of you!
Music from the EARTH to US............Well appreciated
GOD Damn!!!!!!!!!!!! What a jam...Vocals, strings, everything is prefect..

I love love this so much! It breathes new breath into these rusty bones🙌🏻🙏🏼❤️🤍
My favorite song of all time, hands down.
God, I love this! Thank you so much for your talents, more than one, yes..!!!!!!!!!
I come back to this amazing song once a year for some reason I remember it from when it first came out
Seriously... unbelievable! I've never heard anything like it. My hats of to all of you!
Good job on Huckabee!
This album just an awesome fusion of jazz, folk, Irish, and more.
Lovely lovely music. Why omit the credit for the female singer? She's the one who really carries the whole thing. How could they leave her out?
Molly Ruggles She is a guest singer for one song on the ealbum. These are good people, so likely an oversight when posting the whole set.
tairnyn Gotcha. You're probably right. Thanks. :-)

She may have been a guest singer on two tracks but on this one she is also credited as being one of the writers, so she should have been named in the RUclips video title and description.
Words are inadequate here. It doesn’t get any better.
I do agree however... we all are stardust & all should be credited for the work we do .. we are all equal. Peace ‘n love.. keep waking up world .. we ALL have work to do... I enjoyed the female vocals a lot.. great work lady I hope you know how awesome you are.
Watching this video was the best thing that happened to me today!
Superb. One thing that I notice is how Chris maintains eye contact with Aoife, both here and in the onstage recordings. Don't know whether this is a 'thought out' practice, but I can't help but believe establishes an emotional connect that adds quite a lot to the music. Really a neat session, IMO
It helps to see the other person when you're doing a duet to read them.
Wally Bass Enjoy more of this bliss-look up “Chris Thile How to Sing with Others”
I noticed the same thing. He spoke at the Kennedy center in a message titled "how to sing with others" and he talks about the give and take in singing with other people. It's on RUclips too, if you're interested. And then I just saw this has already been mentioned here. :)
amazing voice of contrabas by Meyer!!!!
Love his smile at 2:53 - because she's really good. Real musicians.
Real musicians! Real Art! Great Voices! Great Songs! Bring music like this back to the front line
this song is just sooooo good everytime it hits that deep spot...you know..
Absolutely amazing. Their Jay Leno show appearance performing this song was super energetic.
Friend of me showed me this group a few hours ago...since then I've bought their album and been listening to them non stop...
Wow, for hours?!
The female singers name and a LINK to The Wiki website.

The last minute is painfully wonderful ! (and that's a good thing !)
Oh to be in that room.
Oh my, this transcends great music into an area for which I don't have words. I understand that these musicians have crossed over into pure artistry.
Wow! Awesome! Really powerful. Thank you!
Don't know how I came here, now I don't know how to leave. That woman has everything you can possibly want to hear in her voice.
