The song that got me hooked on the Punch Brothers. God, the sheer amount of talent in this band is insane. Such a tight, cohesive, intense song, and then the vocals at 2:44 floor me every time.
"New York City" was the one that made me stand up and listen. They're amazing.
same
They came to my high school during orchestra class to perform for us, it’s a memory I’ll never forget. I wish I never stopped playing the violin tho :(
Start again!
KISS!
Dang I wish I went to your high school orchestra class.
This song made me immediately buy a mandolin. I can't even play guitar, but this little instrument is amazing. (except when I play it)
I appreciate it dude.
Not many people play the mandolin. At start of is difficult but you will eventually fall in love with it
It's the best instrument ever. So small and portable, you can take it anywhere and shred. Just keep at it! Find some great musicians to emulate. Learn the rules and then break them!
Still playing it?
If you've been practicing a lot, by now you should be pretty sick on it. For anyone else that comes looking... 10 years are going to pass whatever you do, may as well buy an instrument and start practicing
I can't get over how AMAZING Noam is on the banjo!!!!
Every now and then something comes along that gives me another glimmer of hope for humanity. This is one of those things.
Forsure forsure
@Derck McCoy I fluctuate between hope rage and despair to be honest. :(
But thanks for reminding me of this video!
Dude....... check out circa survive..... very similar vibes.... prog rock.....
However..... this is the first time I've really listened to the punch brothers..... absiluteky incredible.
Makes me wanna tear all my clothes off and lay in the forest like a panther. Utterly astonishing. Like Joshua Bell playing Bach. Like van Morrison’s TB Sheets. As if it can’t be fathomed.
@Sam Gentry You are talking about afterlife. I am talking about life in the future. Totally different subject, but thanks and cheers.
Fun fact: this was shot at Pete's Candy Store in Williamsburg, Brooklyn, one of the few remaining truly cool places in the neighborhood.
Saw them in concert. They ended the show and got a 10 minute standing ovation and came back out and played this. Which didn't even feel real at that point but sounded the same live as this recording
Is there any music like this these days
You can tell that they're actually playing along, rather than just going through the motions of playing to the studio track. It seems more "real" this way. At any rate, I love it.
Any time I hear a violin or mandolin I’m required to return to this masterpiece
Thanks Greg Maddux for inspiring this really good song!
As a former Montreal Expos fan, I’m all too familiar with the deadly movement and location of Mr. Maddux’s pitches.
#Legend
I love this song so much I can't explain. The instrumentation is just genius, the tune is truly mesmerising, oh and the key change at 2:42 is just so incredibly refreshing and... aaaaaaaaah.
I have been blessed… thank you for this 😌
First time ever hearing of this group. Not usually a fan of acoustic music, but this is beautiful. What these guys are doing, instrumentally, is so refreshing and intricate.
If you like it you should check out Nickel Creek too.
rolen47 Conspiracy Cat And do listen to Andrew Bird's 'Pulaski at Night or 'Logan's Loop', he sort of fits similarly into this folk genre. Equally as talented! :)
I can't believe this wonderful song has so little views even after their appearance on Conan... this needs to be hyped up
There’s no hook….purposely. They rarely give you the hook. Magnet and julep do, some others. This was never meant for mass consumption
That is one AMAZING piece of music. I've listened to it many, many times, and it always makes me smile.
No computer's needed to make 100% quality music, just time & practice.
his polyrhythm/synchopation/madness at 1:23 is WOW! I love it!
A Reddit post brought me here, he said he was obsessed with your band. I must admit I am floored by the sound you guys have, your mix of genres, and I can't wait to see you guys in concert now. Here's to looking forward to your next west coast show.
Came from that thread. Still listening.
The Punch Brothers Concert Experience is a unique and wonderful experience. It's incredible how they work one microphone. Best experienced in a small venue, imo.
If you enjoy this, check out Chris' earlier band, Nickel Creek. I particularly like 'out of the woods' and 'the lighthouse's tale'. Also look for videos from the movie Another Day, Another Time: Celebrating the Music of Inside Llewyn Davis.
Agreed. I saw them in a small old church. One mic and fantastic room acoustics. They held us firmly for 2+ hours...then did an encore with Familiarity (who closes with the longest and hardest tune? PB does).
I have never heard these guys before...where have I been!? They are phenomenal
2020. Still listening ❤
Still one of the coolest pieces of music I've ever heard. If the sound was visual it would be a busy Time Square New York street scene, rush hour in 2018 that is overlayed with a ghost doing a slow stuttering waltz in the middle of a dance hall in 1700's when the streets were dirt and the dresses long...
One of the best group of musicians playing today, acoustic or otherwise, playing some well written songs.
AWESOME!! As out of the box as it gets! The absolute antithesis of MTV/Corporate mechanical regurgitated pop music! Actual artists doing their own thing. Thank you Austin City Limits for the intro!
I heard these guys play this on Conan O'brien many years ago and have been a fan ever since!
I love the sound of that banjo being picked! The whole song is great all-around! 1-)
forever thankful to the Coen brothers for introducing me to Chris T. and these gems
Uwc amazing friend like you Chris
*Runnin' from the cold up in New England
I was born to be a fiddler in an old-time stringband
My baby plays the guitar
I pick a banjo now* lyrics from Wagon Wheel come to my mind when I see this amazing old-time stringband perform. This is such a talented group of musicians. Thank God I found them :D
This is one of the most beautiful songs…ever. And beautifully filmed. Love them.
What can you even say that would do any justice to the amount of talent these guys have….
anybody else think this is the most beautiful thing they've heard today?
Gives me chills every time!
Same.. It's 2020 and I'm still listening..and still getting chills every time!
I get a physical pain in my chest when I realize this was 11 years ago. Gabe is gone, and they don't write music like this any more. Punch Brothers reawakened my long dormant interest in music and stoked a raging fire. Now I don't know what to do with it, and I have nothing left to look forward to.
a-maz-ing. Soooo much better than a lot of other music out there. People don't know what they're missing. (great show in Charlottesville by the way)
Great vocals Chris Thile! You have the most amazing range... It's so inspiring to hear you reach for the stars. Thank you.
I fucking love this ! I wake up and this was on TV, thought I was on another planet !
Unbelievably Good
This is a masterpiece.
Fabulous musicianship and vocals. Very ethereal sound and arrangement. Well done!
Learned about you after a shoutout by Ed Helmes on The Nerdist podcast.
Kudos to the film-maker(s) as well. Beautifully shot and edited.
Damnit, Chris. Why do you have to keep being in things I love. I can't keep track of them all
This band is a step up from "Nickel Creek"! Chris Thile is one of the best mandolin players and I have heard a lot of them! The way the mandolin is played and how the Banjo, the Violin and the bass all come together! Good Job on the Song Guys keep it up!
Absolute precision and amazing talent out of these young men. Outstanding!
I just fell in love with this band. New album out 2015
Still an absolute classic. It's so amazing hearing these guys and their fresh take on older formulars; they just do it so intricately and are incredibly musically virtuous. Heard Radiohead's "Burn The Witch" recently and instantly fell in love with it - then was reminded of these guys.
This may very well be the best song I have heard ever.
Love this song. I'm just now discovering Punch Brothers and I don't understand what they aren't everywhere!
It does not matter who Chris Thule plays with, he elevates the music to a higher level. He is a born star!
Chris could have laid in a blistering solo in the song, but it is all about restraint. What a gorgeous piece of music.
EXCELLENT! I can finally spam my friends with the music video instead of any number of amazing live performances.
P.S.: A music video of "Another New World" would make my year/decade.
I can't get over how much of a resemblance he bares to Jude Law.One of my favorite
Actors and quickly becoming my favorite musician. This man is the perfect combo of awesome.
3:44 - Chris, dude, I love you so much!
Right now they have 3 full albums out and an EP. I'd start with their latest album "Who's Feeling Young Now" (which this song is from). It's their most accessible album and in my opinion their best to date. If you like that (you will) try their other stuff, it's a bit more complex and requires more effort from the listener, but it's absolutely worth it.
Amazing! Simply amazing...
This could so easily not have worked - but my gosh it does. I love this band with all my heart.
They sound exactly the same live! See em live while you can!
Astonishing. Years later. Fucking astonishing.
I really don't get how there are thumbs pointing downard...maybe they're just thumbs resting from thumbs upping for so long, momentarily?
They just can't get past Chris' hat.
When you play you use the side of your thumb there fore you have the pick pointing down.
Ignorance lol
But I'm also assuming you're a musician. No matter your skill level, when you play an instrument you appreciate and indulge in music like this so deeply. I also believe there are born musicians who never got the privilege to learn...if this makes you feel something pick up an instrument and project that feeling.
this is the first song I heard of theirs...they played it on a public radio station in mpls called the current when it first came out. been hooked since. Im a hip hop head...i like metal too...jazz, shit i even like coldolay...just about everything (but modern country), but this damn band is sooo freaking talented it's almost infuriating. if you don't at least put respek on they name, I don't take you seriously as a music fan. top 5 fav bands ever
I just heard of these guys; I'm a fan.
+Rob DeMark Join the party dude! Glad to have you aboard Ahoy! I've been following them and Mr. Thile for years now and have seen them and Nickel Creek (Thile's first group) several times. See them live, you'll be in for a treat. There aren't many that match even close to their musical technical prowess mixed with accessibility and pleasant tunes with their range.
Got another favorite! Thank you Punch Brothers
This is phenomenal!!! Love the strings and bass. Does it remind anyone else of Guster?
It’s the tone and his voice.
Hats off to the musical composition.
I love the look of concentration mixed with rapture on your faces when you all really get into playing the music.
the badass energy chris thile gives off in this video is awesome
this song doesnt get old... i love shit like this
the sublimity of this song cannot be overstated. Thile's a moderate singer but his voice in this song's just about perfect (it hardly matters that you can't necessarily pick out the words) and the harmonization of the instruments is top notch. If you get to hear this song live the strength of the bassline gives the song a sense of rhythm that you don't expect from this combination of instruments (they amplify the bass separately). To me it's a techno song played on bluegrass instruments. Just shows what skillful, creative people can do.
Saw you all at Blue Ox this year, AMAZING Amazing AMAZING! Can't wait to see you all again!
this was the song they played first when i saw them live! brings back such happy memories whenever i hear it :)
This is so beautiful and strange it aches in my chest. Thank you, thank you. ❤
